Headed West on Camino Ramanote for an early hike to Lion Mt. I knew it was going to be steep but wow.
At the Atascosa Corral on Wise Mesa headed West on Gasline road through the next Cattleguard. It’s got a pothole that’s at least 18” deep right in front of it.
Park 50 yards at an impromptu campsite here. The Dodge Avenger had no problem getting this far.

The canyon is rimmed by 40-60 foot cliffs but starting here the cliffs come and go.
There is no trail, so I just shot straight down into the canyon in the direction of a wash that leads gradually up to the West side of Lion Mountain.
This wash starts very wide and quickly narrows and gets choked with cats claw.. At one point it looked too mean so I decided to head up at a gradual slant.

The only shade on this side after leaving the canyon was a tall rock where I took a 10 min water break. Near the top there was a tree that was near dead and three Javalinas reluctantly let me rest here for another 10 minutes.
I took off my shirt and draped it over some branches to maximize the shade.

My alarm went off, so I stopped about 200 yards from the peak.
Enjoyed the view and headed back down. I’ve got a rule about turnaround times and water that I won’t even bend.
-
The trip back was difficult because I couldn’t find where I came up through the cliffs. Lots of interesting rock formations. Some deer. Scary moment when I slipped and could not stop sliding. Knees are pretty banged up. It’s not like I was going to slide over a cliff or anything. Just no traction there.

Jump scene was when a rabbit jumped out from under a rock I was stepping over. That actually got my heart pumping more than the slide/fall.
-
The way back up was a lot easier because I found a cow trail.
-
The mesa is about 4200 in elevation
The canyon floor is 3800
And the peak is 4597 – I stopped about 50 feet in elevation before the peak.
Starting temp was 66 and when I got back it as 93.
Nary a breeze and hardly a cloud.
I think this will make a good winter hike starting at Castle Tank and ending at Split tank.
