| no partners | | Attempting to finish out hiking to all the {published} cliff dwellings in the Anchas. I’d been to Pueblo Canyon, but we didn’t have time for a side trip to the Crack House that day, so it was time to go back!
Note: We were a bit tired of driving, so opted to hike up the last portion of the road to the trailhead, added a bit of mileage and AEG to our stats.
It’s a rocky uneventful uphill on the main trail to Pueblo Canyon, until you reach your turnoff on the left. It was marked by a large cairn. At first, the path is fairly obvious, but as you near the canyon area, it gets a tad confusing. We originally followed a path to the left but that was heading more towards a viewpoint of the canyon as opposed to the dwelling. The viewpoint of a huge pillar was nice, so I actually recommend the detour.
We had to backtrack a bit, but did finally find our way to another faint path. Here we had our first view of the cliff dwelling. It did not look easy to get to at all. 
Once you near the dwelling, get ready for a spicy final ascent. It is a very steep grade and it’s full of loose rock. I slid back many times and used trees to grab and help myself up. This felt like it went on forever, but alas I was finally at the top. There was a walk through tall grass before reaching the bottom of the dwelling. I was praying there were no snakes and I got lucky! Phew!
The dwelling was huge and impressive! I heard some noises coming from inside so I did not try to venture in. It’s a beautiful view from there as well.
You return the way you come, so the way back was uneventful. Happy to check another dwelling off my list, not many to go! After, we set up camp near cherry creek and had a great night! |
