| partners | | The first hike I ever did with Wally was to 5057, but from Carney. this time we did it from Hiero. I had attempted 5057 from Hiero 21 years ago with my friend Ted, but we were inexperienced and bushwhacked our way up to the mesa NW of the peak and called it a day.
We got an early start due to the 90 degree forecast. Almost the entire hike up Hieroglyphic Canyon we were in the shade. It wasn't as bad as I remember it from 21 years ago. the scree section just before the ridgeline was steep but we took our time and it wasn't so bad.
Looks like a new section of the ridgeline was made on the one knob that goes almost to the peak rather than stay on the west side. We didn't take that route. The west side is gnarly and hard to follow as it ascends if your hiking eastbound. I lost the trail several times in this segment and ended up doing a lot of strenuous bouldering.
At the turn off to the peak we arrived at the same time as 2 other hikers who started from Carney. The originally had plans for the ridgeline but they said LDSP was closed (or wouldn't be open when they got there?, not sure), so they just did the same peak. Wally and I were both excited that we were able to pass these hikers and get to the peak before them since they were obviously a good 20 years younger than we are . Of course in doing that, we veered off route and got to a way too steep and overgrown section to the peak, but whatever.
The hike down was brutal, it took as long as the ascent. The steepness and loose scree and dirt demand attention and a slower pace, which starts to seep into the joints. I took a spill twice with the scree and almost a couple times more. Even at the more level part of the trail after the tourist area the rocks there were hard to walk around. Got a few new blisters and my knee hurts after the one spill. definitely feeling the age factor start to take a toll after this one. But we still did it. |
