This was an easy one to finish since it's just a 3-4 mile drive south of I-10 on SR83 to the Sahuarita TH, and then an easy 14 mile out and back hike. It's mostly level with one climb about 5 miles in, but the climb is an easy grade, nothing steep.
A little chilly to start until the sun hit, then it warmed up. It got cool when the clouds covered the sun, and felt a bit warm when they didn't. It seemed colder on the way back than on the way in. 3 miles in I thought for sure I would shed my hoodie after lunch, then during lunch it a bit chilly again due to the clouds and lack of body heat from not moving.
Clouds were on top of the Rincons and Mt. Lemmon the entire time. They got lighter as the day went on, but were still persistent. As they cleared, a lot of snow was visible on both mountain ranges. Mt. Wrightson also was covered with snow. The clouds made some nice shadows and really nice scenery as opposed to overcast skies.
Saw 1 trail runner, a few bikers and one other day hiker. Didn't see any thru hikers, which I thought was a bit odd since this is the prime season for them.
Hiked out to the end of the passage which ends at a dirt road that comes in from 83. I was wondering if it was drivable at all and it might be just barely. Better to walk in from 83 to start AZT6. I think I saw a parking lot by 83 with a bunch of cars, so that looks like the normal option. Ended a little early since this was shorter than most of the other 18+ milers we've been doing. |
