After hiking Snowshed peak the previous day, which was a round trip of 15 miles, we wanted a shorter relaxing hike on our 3rd day of hiking. We decided to try Rattlesnake peak, not knowing the best route. We saw that on the topo map that FSR 357 went all the way down to a place called Pine Spring in Pine Creek.

We started walking from Barfoot park down FSR 357. After hiking about 7 minutes, we reached a road junction and knew we needed to go left. According to the map, FSR 357 continued this way, but the road was completely blocked by many many downed trees. It was obvious there was a fire in this area. We stepped over several downed trees and went in the direction of where the road led to. Up ahead we saw some old road signs with graffiti from 1996! This may have been the last time anyone walked this old road. After continuing, there were sections where the amount of dead fall was minimal, but just after the road looked better it got worse. We ended up following the road all the way down to Pine Canyon where we heard and then saw a small waterfall. At one time the road used to cross the canyon but the road was so washed out it was very hard to tell where it crossed. We dropped down into the canyon and crossed it, then found the road on the other side and continued to follow that. There was some more dead fall but after a few minutes the road cleared up and we made better time.

About 45 minutes later, the old road led down to another branch of Pine creek and we noticed there was a place called Pine Spring on the topo map. We hiked a few minutes down the canyon and found a water source. Luckily, I had my water pump and we really needed it at this point. I had only brought 1/2 gallon of water and drank most of it at this point. I drank the rest of what I had and then pumped 1/2 gallon to make sure I had enough to get back to Barfoot Park. We took a needed break and had some lunch. It took us over 2 hours just to get down the old 4x4 road which was much longer than we thought it would take. We didn't expect so much deadfall. There could have been 200 downed trees from Barfoot park to the spring.

We looked up at Rattlesnake peak from here and noticed that it was about a 45 degree angle with no trail and covered with pine needles which made it slippery. Because of the excess heat, we decided to turn around after our break and continue back up to Barfoot park. We decided we will try this hike a different time from a different trailhead, or maybe we would take the same route again if the temperatures were at least 15 degrees cooler.

On the way up, it felt hotter and there wasn't much wind. We took several breaks in the few shady spots that we found.

If you attempt to take this route, know that the old 4x4 road is a mess! Expect about 200 downed tree each way. Wear jeans, take a lot of water and have a way to filter water from the stream. There's not a lot of shade on this hike, so avoid the heat of the summer.
