| no partners | | Some time ago, the Boy Scouts marked numerous routes from the Pine Canyon area to the top of the rim. I've slowly been trying to trace these different routes from the old map I have. I believe I have 2 more left. One mentions cables and chains towards the top, so I don't think I want to tackle that one solo. The other, from afar, looks daunting.
There is no sign on the Pine Canyon Trail marking the lower beginning of Cinch Hook Canyon. The amount of locust, me in shorts and no telltale red metal Boy Scout tags, almost had me turning around on this one.
The going is slow, but the Locust thins out and canyon gets more and more interesting. I didn't see my first tag until a half mile in and it was a smaller faded tag. There are really only 3 falls areas that were slightly difficult. With more water flowing, the footing would have been slippery with the moss. The first falls was a 10 footer, followed by a 20' (bypass to the right) and then a 30' that looked daunting at first. I was able to keep my footing by going straight up and to the right.
The red markers become more prevalent starting here and appear to have been replaced/added to recently.
After this, the trail levels out and becomes easy. It appears it could be on an old road heading straight for SR87, then turns to the right and heads for another falls area.
From here I followed a combination of FR's and the General Crook to make my way over to the Switch Backs of the Pine Canyon Trail.
I saw only a few people all day, perfect Temps |
