Route Scout Route Recorded  on Route Scout Popup | MapDEX
This is a practice/warm up hike to triplog 1000 hopefully coming up on Thurs. I found a cohort to hopefully join me for that. Meanwhile, I decided on this loop that I've never done before using the main routes. I bandaged up my heels and took off in the 48 degree temps to tackle North Mountain first. I haven't been up here since they refurbished the route to it and up it. All I gotta say is WOWSZA, that's nice!

I trudged my way up not having to worry about footing. It's still steep. Traffic wasn't too bad with a mix of friendly hellos and nothing. Wish the nothings wouldn't annoy me so. I made it to the sign and took the picture of the high five for completing the mission. Just to the NE is a pullout area that has an interestingly decorated Xmas tree. I grabbed some pics before sitting on the stone bench to re-set my bandages that had come off again. I tightened my shoe laces hoping that would keep them in place. I still have to get the tape Linda recommended.

And then it was down we go. I filmed a bit of it and got some pictures of the railings shadows as for some reason, I found the shadows patterns very artsy looking. I ran into a couple girls that were just getting to the pavement who said how much further. I said "not much" but chuckled and said, "it's pavement so it's not bad". Then as I got near the intersection to go west, an elderly person with a trekking pole was moving pretty fast so I got out of his way. I would see him later on the hike.

Anyway, it's a little longer than I thot to hook up with 100 and then back on the 306 to head up toward Shaw Butte. This south side hill is always a bit of a bugger for me. It comes in six tiers and that's how I tackle it. Believe it or not, I could feel the humidity heading up it but the cool air helped me keep a decent pace. It seemed just a tad harder only because I had done North Mountain but I did okay. I swung over to the western butte and then up the paved hill in the very cold air caused by the shade, up and around the main towers and down. The Christmas Palo Verde has some decorations on it that glitter nicely in the sun. They've rocked a bunch of this and that makes it a little harder to maneuver down.

There were quite a few hikers out today. I saw two squirrels. It was 12:30 which is what I expected it would be by the time I finished so I was pretty hungry.

Here is a video I put together of movies and pics: [ youtube video ]

WATCH: 7.08 miles in 2:53 at 2.4 MPH avg speed, 127 avg bpm, 158 max (50 min in Zone 5, 32 in Zone 4, 1:11 in Zone 3, 20 in Zone 2), burned 1106 calories (Hello Arby's Reuben). 48.1 degrees at 12:22PM with 44% humidity. I think the temp readings run low. Phx weather says temp at 11:51 was 57 degrees and 29% humidity. The temp and humidity must be from when I started which was around 9:30AM and matches up better with Phoenix weather.

For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.
