Today was the first day of deer rifle season. Despite my dislike of the color, I wore orange when I realized that every man in the panhandle skipped work today and was out wandering around and ready to shoot anything that moved. Bernard Peak is a quick drive from my house, and a solid workout hike with good stats and a great trail.

Got started from the trailhead at the end of Twete Rd around 0900. It’s an easy hike uphill on a fairly consistent incline. Passed a few hunters in the first mile or so, while on Scout Trail. As I reached the point where Scout Trail turns into Bernard Peak trail, I passed a few deer. They were hanging out farther in than most of the hunters seemed to want to walk, lol.

All the brush has been cleared back from the trail. And any recent deadfall has been cleared too. We had a big windstorm across the region a couple of weeks ago that toppled a lot of trees, this trail being no exception, especially in the burn scar, but they must have been out there clearing them almost immediately.

Easy hike to the summit, where there were more hunters. Quick hike back downhill. Views are generally limited, but there are some nice glimpses of the lake. There were a bunch of new moose tracks on the trail that had not been there on my ascent. Passed more hunters in the final two miles. I mentioned where I had seen the deer this morning and wished them luck. Saw some grouse, but not much else.

Temps in the 50s most of the day, low 60s by the time I finished. This hike is north side of the mountain, and gets a lot of shade all day in the fall, so it felt cooler. Good option for easy mileage when I’m not wanting to drive too far.
