I have never hiked this one and always wanted to see what it was all about. My friend, Jackson, was looking to get in a hike, suggested we hit this one.

I looked at some triplogs and descriptions for this hike and it looks like you can drive pretty close to the base to the actual "trailhead", but we opted to park right off the Vulture Mine Road and hike along a 4x4 road. We made a loop out of it and came back along the wash that is just below the road.

The first section of this hike was nothing special, but as we got closer to the peak, it started getting really interesting. Most of the elevation gain is packed into the last 1.5 miles. The ascent starts out steep, then you hit a series of switchbacks and then another climb to the saddle area between the two sections of the peak. That's where you see the chute for the first time. It looks pretty nasty from the saddle, but once you are on it, it's not too bad. Some climbing skills required, but nothing with too much exposure and at an angle that would only drop you a little if you make a miscalculation.

Luckily, we made no miscalculations and made it to the top. The hazy and cloudy conditions made for very poor lighting conditions for photos, but the views were still there.

We came across a couple of groups going down while we were going up and met another group up on top. For the most part, we had the trails to ourselves.

This hike was a pleasant surprise. Not as scary as the chute on Brown's Peak and not near as long as the chute for the Flatiron, but just enough to get your heart going pretty fast.

I'd like to hit this one again for a sunrise or sunset as it has very good 360 degree views up on top. I would probably drive all the way to the trailhead below the peak and skip the boring wash/road hiking.
