I started from Nettleton Gulch around 0615 to 52 degrees and cloudy/drizzly. It rained quite a bit last night, so the trails were muddy in a lot of places, so I was glad to wear waterproof Salomons, which have better grip on wet surfaces vs my preferred Sauconys. Another thing I realized within the first few minutes—I had brought three different daypacks to leave up here permanently—the pack I had chosen for today was last used for non-hiking activities, and I had topped off the water bladder on top of some vodka mixed drink. Made for an interested flavor of water today. Oh well.
Anyway, I headed up Trail 3, which is steep, and rutted out from dirtbikes. Not bad going up, but would be annoying to descend. Some mud and loose rock. Heard a loud noise at one point and saw an animal off to my left. At first, all I could see was an pumpkin and large ears, and for a split second thought a mule had escaped from one of the nearby properties. I quickly realized however, that I was looking at a moose. Got some pics as it walked ahead of me for a moment.
After crossing a forest road, trail 3 becomes trail 1, and gets even steeper. Very steep. Slow trudge up to West Canfield. The best views are actually at the rock outcropping on the west side of the mountain. From there, I made my way over to the unexciting true summit.
From the summit, I took trail D, which is a very nice section, over to the saddle between West and East Canfield. Some glimpses of Lake Hayden. Started raining a little heavier, so I added a rain jacket. Saw a turkey. From the saddle, I headed up a very steep trail to the summit of East Canfield, which is also not very exciting. Came down a slightly different, but less steep, route back to the saddle, which I think was also trail D.
At the saddle again, I got rid of the rain jacket, then headed down trail 6, which is an old logging road, very easy. Some views of Lake Coeur d’Alene. Took a shortcut on steep trail 5 to get down to trail A, which is another old logging road. Easy. Took trail 4 (Cave) which follows Nettleton Gulch back down to the parking on an easy trail. 53 degrees when I finished. Did not see anyone else, but there were a couple other vehicles at the trailhead.
Good workout hike. Convenient to my house as it’s only 8 miles/20 minutes away. Will probably explore some of the other trailhead options too. |
