After meeting up with Joe in Benson, we headed down to Mexico's doorstep. Some map fumbling and a wrong turn brought us through the bustling city of Sierra Vista, to the easily found turn off for Carr Canyon Road. Signs warned of smuggling activity. An eternity of rough road led us to the top of an interesting geologic feature known as The Reef, a broad, tilted shelf perched halfway up the side of the Huachucas. Very pretty, forested, and quite reminiscent of the Mazatzals! :) We passed one trailhead, and came to a second at the end of the road, where we chose to start hiking. It was toasty along the ridge, but tree cover soon brought relief. I marveled at the grey limestone bedrock (I find sedimentary rocks fascinating. Stupid, I know.) The scenery and views only got better, ultimately becoming a "wildflower island in the sky" experience.

Our summit climb brought clouds and a chilly (66 degree) breeze. :D The return hike was quick, and we made it back to the truck at dusk. Careening down the Carr Canyon Road in the dark, my headlights suddenly landed on some freak walking in the middle of the road with a laptop in his arms. Whuh? Saw one deer too. A visit to Wenchys, a pass though a border patrol checkpoint, and we were headed home.

It was a great trip, and the Huachucas delivered more than I had expected. If not for the tales of illegal activity along their trails, I'd likely come to the Huachucas quite often.
