Low expectations, big pay off. Brian and I hiked this canyon on Sat, starting a little later than I like, to try to see if we could get to the Salt River. We had looked at this on TOPO and did not look that exciting, some noticable elevation change mid trip for about a half mile. We had hiked the neighboring canyon but didn't know what to expect.
What a pretty little canyon!!! Some shallow narrows, some sculptured granite boulders, a little scrambling, neat geology, large staghorn cholla, fat and happy barrel cacti, some massive old looking cedars growing out of rock. I took probably some of my crappiest photos ever, just didn't have time or inclination to really compose much of anything or slow down.
We saw the 4 bars as Brian calls them and got excited. Each drop we came to we could bypass pretty easily. The last part was easy strolling on packed sand, then around a turn and----
Magic!! Absolutely fabulous. This area of the Salt just below the jutting 4 bars of the white ledges was incredible. A busy area geologically. Again my photos do no justice to this place, I ran around with the camera Brian eating a late lunch/dinner. Water pooled where the ledges were broken by the river and made some nice reflections. I could have stayed here forever. We had to go back, a steady elevation grunt, too soon.
In the fading light we drove down and camped at Gleason Flat, a not very pretty place of the Salt River Canyon. Next day we explored some down by the river, a steep up and down hike to an old reclaimed mine, then around some boulders where we saw an alert and angry rattlesnake.
Another great weekend with a gem of a trip. I will be back.
