Broke camp and hit the road around sunrise, making a stop at the Sierra Nevada Overlook for some alpenglow goodness. Once the road turns to dirt, a sign states the speed limit is 25. Perhaps I'm too careful with my daily driver but I barely went over 15mph for 90% of the drive so I started about 20 minutes behind schedule. I'm happy to report the new struts and sway bar links I installed a few days prior survived the trek. Kudos to the driver of the Prius at the trailhead.
The scenery on this one is top notch, I couldn't stop snapping pictures. White Mountain Peak comes into view around the 2.6mi mark - it looks so close but rest assured, it isn't.
With that said, it's a 15 mile road walk with tons of ankle busters, especially near the peak. The route robs you of 200ft of gain in the beginning and another 250ft just before the peak, making the return a bit of a slog.
The summit is airy on all sides with a stone hut which is closed to the public. The drop-off to the west into Owens Valley is massive (nearly 10k ft) and obviously the Sierras are right there in your face. One thing that caught my eye is Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project to the northeast in NV - looks like a giant, shining beacon in the distance.
Return trip was uneventful, as was the drive out. I opted to skip Patriarch Grove (regretfully) but I felt beat and hungry. There's always something that gets left out which gives me an excuse to return in the future. |
