I told Wally I would meet him at First Water TH. When I left 10 min earlier than I expected, I texted him and told him I would start without him if I got there first. At the end of Brown/Lost Dutchman Road before 88, I saw him speeding by on 88. I figured I might catch him on First Water Road, but he was even faster there. Looks like he can drive fast when he wants to  .

did the loop counter clockwise heading out on Second Water Trail first. I kicked out a javelina on the descent into Boulder Canyon. It was a little startling as it remained still until I was about 6 feet away and then it bolted across the trail right in front of me. It made it up the the hill in what looked effortless, across all the loose volcanic rock.

Wally pointed out some interesting spots he knew about on the way down to Boulder Canyon, which was cool to learn about. Boulder Canyon was nothing major and then we headed up Calvary Trail. On the east side Wally pointed out where he discovered ruins on previous expeditions, and I got zoomed in pics the best I could.

On the LDT to Bull Pass we saw 2 deer, I got a few nice shots. Bull Pass was a bit of a slog and then downhill wasn't worse, but was slower with steep grades and loose rock.

Finished in 7.5 hours, with no lunch break. I didn't feel too beat but navigating over the rocky trails on the last mile was a bit more of an effort than usual. Saw 5 hikers total all day. It was little warm at the end but still not too hot to make this harder than it would normally be.

The real heat hasn't started just yet but when Chris mentioned Marsh Valley Loop I was thinking of a plan B if it got too hot. We started early and is was still nice and cool. There was even shade in Boulder Canyon for much of the way so I knew it would be good to finish the entire hike.

There was one hiker that hiked Battleship. Het passed us on the way in but I got back to the trailhead about 6 minutes before him. He said he spent a lot of time trail finding.

The trails were easy to follow. The burned out sections of Cavalry trail were open for the most part but there was some downed brush to hike around. It didn't really warm up until we hit Dutchman trail.

We saw fuana on this trip. A javelina, two deer, a rat, squirrels, a hawk and the circling vultures.
I rested a few times in the shade but once the shade disappeared I kept moving. Not a lot of hikers out but it was a nice day. I still had water left at the end. It was still frozen or I would have drank it.

Decided to take advantage of the last day of the unseasonably pleasant temperatures. 52 to start, slowly climbed into the 60s and eventually topped out at 76 when the sun was out. Still a cool breeze though and plenty of clouds to keep the sun from ruining things too much.

Hadn't walked 2nd Water since it burned. Met all the expectations I'd been given from other visits I'd seen reports of. Meh.

Boulder Canyon is unburned so that's nice. This trail has gotten a lot more use over the years and is pretty much a highway now. Despite the recent stormy weather, still not a drop of water remaining on the surface.

Took the old boots route up to the saddle, though there's a newer one that gets plenty of use a bit to the north which I used on the descent. Straightforward trip across to the summit. High clouds made for some flat light and lackluster views. Took a solid break to enjoy some 8am m&ms and gummybears for breakfast. :D

Passed the only other humans on the day along the 103. Turning onto 236 I decided to head up canyon, which I had not previously done. The burn here is fairly complete, so there's no mystery to any of it. Plentiful water, though it looked stagnant and unappealing. I imagine these pools now heat up to gross temperatures with the lack of shade surrounding them.

Made some attempt to find the Stoker Trail. Don't bother, there's no sign of it anymore. But it's an easy ashy traverse back to 236 even without obvious tread.

Quick work back to the trailhead. Sun came out for a bit and it felt warmer than the thermometer indicated. Go figure. Hit a solid rain shower on the drive home which is always a nice May treat here.

Was eyeing a Meetup for Marsh Valley Loop. However, the numbers scared peeps away and the event was cancelled. I was then able to convince 2 friends to do this plus the high point. 😎

Met 1 not far from me at 7. Start hike at 8:30. So we did the Black Top Mesa outing. There is no sign for Bull Pass and is a bit out of the way to find. This is where it gets steep & rocky. The use trail from there has cairns along the path. Was surprised to see 1 other hiker descending from the high point.

Instead of going back the way we came, we looped it. Props to @trekkin_gecko as his triplog inspired this outing. Much of this route is chill but at the end u have to climb back out 2nd Water. 🫤

The retired dude, who's busier than a focused college student, suddenly had an opening in his schedule. Based on memory, the proposed route looked horrible but a hike indeed.

On my first non-local glorified walk in months, a rarely experienced condition surfaced within a half mile. Excessive wear of baby-soft skin gave way to... a friggen blister. The king of prepared sorted through his first aid kit. Forceps, retractors, scalpel. Bingo, sports tape!

We worked over to and followed FR1455 to the old ranch/canopy/windmill site, Bruce said he's never visited. Next up was Oro Butte. Which is easy to get to for all. Slightly challenging for my balance to ascend. 456 nightmare for me to get down to Boulder. Yet he can't do Lion. Oh whatever.

Concern ahead from step one was the tango on the horizon. Boulder hopping Boulder Creek with unprepared stabilization muscle groups. Looming were the intense screams from a strong hiking buddy being tortured by hopping Agua Fria from Badger. I've seen it with others in Woods Canyon, too. Never pretty to witness, and you certainly don't wanna experience it.

Got lucky. Only hopped small 3-4 footers for maybe 0.1-0.25 mi. Not 3+ miles as assumed. In hindsight(first glance...lol), coulda cut over to #103 too.

Synopsis
The 2024 Siphon Fire covers 92.8% of this loop. The 2020 Supersitition Fire covers the southern third. More unique than a tear-jerker. Creeks are not running. Plenty of clear enough pools to filter for huge groups. This loop isn't my cup of tea. Good to get out regardless.

On a bigger hike we did five years ago, I stumbled upon the word "ORO" and some arrows etched into a rock face, well away from any trail. I told myself I'd come back someday and make a half-arsed effort to find a route off the top of this peak in the general direction of the arrow.

Starting from the First Water Trailhead, we walked back toward the horse lot for a short distance before going cross-country to join up with the now-defunct FR1455. We connected with some use trails that are in better shape than most of the trails in the Supes, and two miles in, we started our off-trail jaunt. It was easy going for the most part until we began our climb to the unnamed/unnumbered peak at about 2,740 feet in elevation. We let the wind dry us up a bit and then headed over to the minor peak that held the inscription. It’s still there (Joe had his doubts).

Now the fun began—finding our way to the wash. It was loose and slow going, taking 50 minutes to travel 0.6 miles. We had a bit of a break before tackling our next uncertainty: dropping into Boulder Canyon. There were a few dry falls to bypass and some brushy areas, but an hour later and one mile in, we made it into Boulder Canyon.

Joe was glad for the 1.5 miles of boulder hopping and reed thrashing. Once we reached the Second Water Trail, we began seeing humans.

We were in and out of fire-scarred terrain for the entire hike. Some areas looked like a burned moonscape, with nothing more destroyed than Garden Valley.

The temperatures were good throughout the day, and there were plenty of pools of water out there from the recent rains.

Today was a return to an old Superstition favorite--I've been up Battleship a few times, but it had been more than five years since my last visit. And it would (hopefully) be a redemption hike for TboneKathy--last time she tried Battleship in March 2017, we ran out of time and didn't make the top, and she took a tumble in the creek bed on the hike out that resulted in a fractured wrist. She hadn't been back since. So the goals today were simple: (1) get TboneKathy to the peak, and (2) don't break anything.

We started ~7AM from First Water TH, which was surprisingly empty for a weekend. This was my first time back there since the fires, and it wasn't great--the area around the trailhead and the first few miles along Second Water were all burned to varying degrees, and the smell of ash and charcoal was a constant until we got closer to Boulder Canyon. There were a few pools along Second Water Trail on the descent, but Boulder Canyon was almost completely dry despite the recent rain.

The use trail leading up to the south end of Battleship was more defined than I remembered and was easy to follow, then we started the fun with the first scramble up onto Battleship and continued north into the obstacles. In March 2017 we turned around just before the bridge/wall not too far from the peak, but TboneKathy was convinced today that most of the top of the ship was uncharted territory for her: "Are you sure I climbed up this before?!" Yes, you did :).

We scrambled through the various boulders and cracks and eventually crossed the bridge and reached the wall, the last big obstacle. With some pack shuttling and creative teamwork, TboneKathy made it up first, and with some further encouragement and some minor complaining through the last few obstacles, we reached summit, goal #1 complete. We had the peak to ourselves, a pleasant surprise given Battleship's popularity. There was no register on top--the pink ammo box that had been up there for years is gone. We ate lunch and enjoyed the views, then took some pictures and started down.

[ youtube video ]

As we reversed through the obstacles on the return, TboneKathy thought she saw a fox or wolf down below on the west side of Battleship, but I never caught more than a glimpse of a tail that looked a lot like a squirrel, so her sighting remains in dispute :). We heard voices and saw two guys down in La Barge Canyon, but other than one person coming down on our way up in the morning, we didn't see anyone on Battleship. The views of La Barge, Peak 2830, Weaver's Needle, Malapais, and the Ridgeline were fantastic as always and better than I remembered.

[ youtube video ]

The hike out was blissfully uneventful with no fractured bones, successfully completing goal #2. Weather-wise, the day was just about perfect, and I was happy to see TboneKathy reach the peak after waiting 8 years. Lots of great memories hiking Battleship with friends over the years, and it was fun to be back after a long time away for another memorable day.

This has been on my list for years. Picked up a friend at 8. Met one other at 8:45. Start hike at 9:30. Not much EG for a while on this one. Needless to say, that does change. 😎

Once you leave the official trail, the hike becomes far more aggressive. There is a use trail. This eventually turns to scrambling. There is exposure involved. I can see how this could be too much for some.

We passed up the high point for better views just beyond. The descent wasn't as difficult as I thought it may be. Just when you think you the adventure is winding down, you climb back out.

Would have expected the tracker to show more AEG than this. The 7 hour estimate was right on for us. Back home bout 6. Hoping to pursue further Supes hikes soon that have stagnated on my list for too long...

Saw some information about possible cliff dwellings so off I went. Of course there wasn't anything up there except some fool sliding up and down the slopes but I had to. The morning was breezy and cold in the open. Once out of the wind it was nice. Garden Valley is an interesting walk, with the moonscape you can see the canals and how large of and area it is. Second Water Canyon had a lot of water which was a surprise. You could easily filter in several spots if needed. La Barge Creek is dry but I didn't go all the way to the lower box. I scrambled up the slope to the cliff band and then back along the cliff band and found a way back down. Loose and steep was the challenge for the day. Once back on trail I was so happy the hills on the trail seemed like nothing. Lots of hikers out but it wasn't crowded by any means. A good hike but I won't be going up to those cliffs again.

First full family hike we've done in as long as I can remember. Both kids are in college now and one is no longer a teenager :o . The early wakeup is met with the same teenage exuberance, but once we're out a mile or so on the trail, the moods start to improve.

Took the Second Water Trail to the first horse trail junction and headed down towards Hackberry Spring and then up the hill. Just before our ascent we saw a small herd of deer, at least 3, maybe 4 or more. Almost missed the junction for the trail to the Clapp Mine as it's pretty faint and right next to where the Hackberry Spring Trail makes a hard right turn.

Got to the mine and this time I packed my headlamp so I went inside a bit. It's really much warmer in there than outside in the shade, which was probably lower 50s. This seemed in contrast with the Lava River Tube in Flag where it's much cooler inside. I didn't go too far in because I've seen other posts where there are bats further back. also saw some mice scat piles and a snakeskin, so I was was good to explore as much as I did. Natasha followed me in but Radmila and Dmitri wanted nothing to do with it. [-(

On the way back we made a loop of it heading up to Garden Valley and checked out the Indian ruin. Still lots of sherds left out for people to easily find, one was really big. It's interesting how busy this trail is but the majority of people who walk by this have no idea.

Made it back to the lot and stopped for lunch on the way home, followed by an afternoon powernap by everyone. Saw quite a bit for a short hike, turned out very nice. Cruising into Xmas time.

Quick hike to hackberry springs. Garden Mesa is sad. Hackberry springs area is slightly better, with some unburned areas.

First Water lot had lots of people, but didn't see too many people on the trail until later. As we drove out, there were lots of people in every parking area on first Water road. Glad we went earlier! Gorgeous weather!

A short follow up hike to see if the turtle crawled off from under the bush. The turtle was gone so he must have been ok. No one at the trailhead and no one on trail. The morning was nice around 74 degrees and shaded. I didn't hike long enough for it to warm up just a little way past Garden Valley and back. I saw a little monster on the drive out so I stopped to take some photos. Seems late in the year for gila monsters but this was a young one not much bigger than a collared lizard.

Another Sunday morning hike with Dmitri. We started from the Hackberry lot and headed up to the small hill right next to hit. By the time we got to the top of the hill, we exceeded the AEG from the previous Sunday hike. Up there we had a nice view of Superstition Mt and the surrounding area. We also saw a deer below us on the east side.

Once we got down, we took the trail over towards the Needle Vista area. the trail first goes to 88 and then parallels 188 to the vista lot. At the concrete path, the singletrack continued, so I followed it another few hundred feet to where it dead ended in a slot canyon wash.

We headed back to the main Hackberry loop and took that trail to the mini slot canyon south of the spring and headed out to Second Water Trail and back to the car. Most of the trails we did were ones that I hadn't done before, and I found several junctions to trails I know I haven't done before. Seems like more trails have been added recently, but I can't tell. We lost the trail at one point coming out of the canyon/wash by Hackberry Spring, but there are so many trails that we easily found another one.

We saw one hiker leave the lot we parked at after we summited the hill and that was it for the entire day. 2 cars at First Water lot when we went through and no other cars at the Hackberry lot when we returned. Thin clouds kept the temperature not really hot so I was surprised that it was that deserted for an area that's normally so crazy busy. Nice contrast after dodging bikers in Usery the week before.

With the summer oven starting up soon, I thought I would sneak in one more loop in the Western Supes.

I arrived at the trailhead just before 6am. The lots was empty except for 1 car. I did the loop clockwise - heading up Second Water to Black Mesa and then back via the Dutchman.

The lack of rain lately is evident as I recall this area was as green as Ireland with the winter rains. Now, it's dried up and very, very grassy. All of the brittlebush and other blooms are gone with the exception of the now blooming saguaros. A few prickly pear holding on as well.

No snakes (bummer), tons of lizards and these interesting black/white bees that were buzzing all along the trail almost the entire hike.

The weather was very pleasant for most of the hike. It started feeling a little toasty towards the end, but still not hot.

I came across my first human as I was hiking up the last 1/4 mile to the trailhead. I also came across a horse rider heading out as well.

I very nice loop with plenty of solitude, beautiful scenery and fresh air.

The trail is in really good shape from start to finish.

Met Denny & Wally at First Water at 0500. Driving thru AJ at 0430 is an interesting experience, btw. Headed out on Dutchman and Second Water to Garden Valley. Shade the whole way. Garden Valley is a golden sea of foxtails, one spark and that place is going up in flames.

Made our way to Hackberry. The spring is yuck, but plenty of water in the creek after that point. Easy to keep the feet dry, but enough water for nice pics. Didn’t get much sunlight until the last mile or so. Nice early morning workout loop. Saw one other hiker who started at the same time as us. A pleasant surprise of rain showers on part of my drive back home, and at my house, including some thunder. Always good to see Denny & Wally again, thanks for the invitation!

Gross water. Water in the creek west of the spring looks much better.

Wally, Linda and I got out for a leg stretcher in the Supes! We got an early start and were in the shade for the first 4 miles. Finished before it got to warm. Pretty dry out there in the valley. The spring looked a little yucky. There was more water in the creek then I thought there would be. That water looked a lot better then the spring water! We saw some tadpoles in the creek water and Linda spotted one frog with a tail. It was nice to get a little hiking in the Supes! Thanks for the early hike Wally and Linda! Like HAZ, you rock!

Opted for something reliable since I didn’t have a ton of time today. Met Bruce at the trailhead and we got started at 0630. We decided to do the loop counter-clockwise, so stayed on Dutchman to start. Tons of vegetation. Plenty of water. Saw one woman near Parker Pass. She seemed a little out of place, but was in good spirits when we greeted her. Saw one other hiker a ways offtrail shortly before we turned off for Palomino Mtn.

Lots of water in the creek on our way to Palomino. We ended up walking thru a lot of tall grass, hoping nothing would be hidden beneath our feet. After leaving the creek, the steep climb up to Palomino/Aylor’s was pretty much as expected. Steep. Loose rock on the route. Dense vegetation, mostly foxtails, obscured the path in a few places.

Once up top, we walked out on the rocks below the arch, then climbed up on the rocks south of the arch. After a few minutes of exploring, we carefully headed back down to complete the loop.

We were both excited to climb up the rocky, sunny section of Black Mesa Trail. It got even more exciting when we startled a dback, which in turn startled us as we received a noisy lecture about disturbing his morning sunbathing. Black Mesa is super green right now, and covered with brittlebush and globemallow. Kind of impressive.

Uneventful, and quick, hike out on Second Water. Temps were warming up, but there was an occasional breeze. Saw one horseback rider at the trailhead. Bruce thought the hike was wonderful, since I stated “I think you’re right” at least three, possibly four, times. He’s never been correct that many times in his life, much less in a five hour span. Definitely a fluke. Besides the dback, saw one cardinal, lots of lizards, and not much else. Good hike and even good to see Bruce again!

Globemallow, brittlebush were the two stars. A few poppies, lupine, marigolds, and more.

I met Linda to a beautiful, clear, 54 degree, 6:30 am start.

The Supes are incredibly green and colorful right now. The major color flora players (in order of qty) are Brittlebush, Globemallow, Phlox, Desert Marigold, Fairy Duster, Fleabane, Lupine, Owl Clover, Blackfoot Daisy, Desert Chicory, Poppy. I'm not a huge fan of Globemallow, but the sheer number of them contrasting with the green grasses were quite impressive.

We headed on a CCW loop, easily crossing the flowing First Water Creek a couple two or 3 times. On the turn up Little Boulder Canyon to the arch, the water as also flowing nicely. We were able to keep our feet dry all the way. I don't think I've ever hit the start of the bottom part of the route correctly. The climb is steep, loose and overgrown (grasses) in many spots.

Scurrying around the top of Palomino Mountain is my favorite portion of this hike. The views and geology are top notch. Especially with all the green and flowing water out there.

I'm not a huge fan of the Black Mesa Trail #241. It didn't seem as bad going up, but the windless heat was starting to build. There are fields of Globemallow on this track that just don't quit. Quite impressive. We both commented that it did not feel like we were in the Superstitions.

It's going to be hell out here in a few weeks. The Foxtail is mature and will start drying out very soon. There is a bumper crop this year that will make off trail travel a PITA. It was 86 degrees when we finished just before noon.

Good times as always hiking with Linda, especially with all the complements she through my way today. She must be softening up in her golden years.

Started from second water trailhead at 7:20am (Sunday)… parking lot about half full. Hiked down to boulder creek and then made a right (East) to end of battleship. Plenty of water flowing in n Boulder creek! Great day hike… not many hikers out today. I always forget how rocky parts of this hike are… boots definitely recommended.
