2PM - I was a little nervous heading up Go John as last time it was a struggle for me. I had hiked it after doing another little loop. Anyway, I was a happy hiker as I didn't struggle at all. I felt like my old self. I still don't like that rocky section about 2/3 the way up. And from the top of the saddle, it was smooth sailing. I forgot to put on my watch so that felt wierd.

It was a perfect day and I even had a refresh breeze when I hiked south. I was thinking if I were a snake it would be a good afternoon for some sun-bathing, so I kept somewhat alert to that. I made the junction with Clay Mine and decided to hike to where the Horse Trail sign was as I wanted to get at least 4 miles.

The Clay Mine back to go John is pretty soft and has two little hills from the horse traffic. I saw two horseback riders and four hikers. No other critters other than birds. I enjoyed my Huck It.

FYI - Traffic on Cave Creek Rd involves quite a bit of construction.

Temp 73.3 sunny and 12% humidity

Flume trail starts on an old road. After about a mile you join a true trail, gladly. Altho the first 1/2 mile of that is adjacent to homes. The next 1/2 mile gets away and the final 1/2 mile is where the EG is.

Next knocked out quartz trail. Started seeing more people here. Ended up at Slate TH. Go John-Overton-Clay Mine. Clay Mine near Rd, horse rentals and ends at camp grounds. Meh

Closed out lower section of double loop before heading back on Flume. Some of the EG was from Go John. 2nd section of trails now complete on HAZ. Not bad considering this page only shows a fraction of what I've done. PHX season is upon us.

Early morning hike with my sister. She’s only been to Cave Creek once and it’s been awhile since I had done the Clay Mine so I opted for that. Started from the visitor center around 5:30am. Did this lasso going CCW. Very tame trail. Ideal for visiting and catching up. Trail is in good shape, though parts of it are dusty from a the horse traffic. Palio’s, Ironwoods and saguaros were still showing off. We hiked down to the campsite and then turned around. Always nice hiking with family.

Deborah had come to town to retreive her RV from storage to take it back home to Flathead Lake. She stayed at Usery for a couple nites before heading up to Cave Creek Regional Park for a couple nites. So I put together a little hike we could do. She had hiked in the area last year. I picked her and Duke up and we headed out from Go John parking area.

We hiked up Go John and then hung a left at Clay Mine Trail and on to Overton. There were a couple bike riders that took off at the same time (counterclockwise up Go John/down Overton) and we would see them as we started on the Overton. The Overton still afforded us some shade so that was nice. We passed a group that were with a ranger apparently doing the flora tour. We would encounter a few other hikers as we headed up to the north saddle. The breeze also seemed to pick up and stayed with us for the hike off and on :) .

I did notice some wildflowers on our hike including a couple Delphinium, several Tansy Aster, lots of Buckwheat, a couple Mariposa Lilys, a few Desert Trumpets and some waning Owl Clover as well as others I'm not sure of. As we hiked south up the Go John I pointed out to Deborah where the old trail went before the reroute in 2007 (it used to go right next to the mine on the north side). Going down the hill always seems a little longer than I anticipate as there is an extra switchback in there that I forget about.

The gusty breeze really picked up as we got further down the hill. We almost got blown over by a big gust of wind and dust. I decided it was still cool enough to continue the hike so we headed east on the Go John and hooked up with Jasper to Slate. We stopped by the Michelin Saguaro. I didn't realize there was a bench with a little trail there; I guess I hadn't gone this way in a while. We also saw a couple bunnies cross the trail. We continued east up and down through the little gullies before arriving at the Quartz Junction where we sat at the bench, had a snack and enjoyed the view. The teddy chollas were starting to bloom. Oh, Duke was now a dusty Duke (he's a small black dog).

We headed on back only seeing two other hikers as we continued on the Slate Trail rather than taking Jasper. We did notice a couple saguaros with some blooms. We got back to Tonto 3 and then drove to the covered picnic area to have a beer. The ocotillos were blooming prolificly in this area.

Written a couple weeks ago: I was going to do a Spur Cross to Elephant Mtn Saddle hike but thanks to LosDosSloFolks trip report, due to muddy trails, I found a Plan B up in Cave Creek Park. I planned a route and started out on a heavy broken-cloud afternoon up the Go John Trail (my 20th time since 2008 which seems to be the magic year for past trip reports this past several days). I hadn't been up this way for a while and didn't realize what a nice grade and trail it is to get to the saddle. I was hoping for poppies, which of course there was, but they were cold like me so I would see fluted Poppies for most of the day. There would be scattered Lupine as well and like the other hikes I've done recently, the growth is stunted for a lot of them. Once again, did the freeze cause this? or is it just early? There were quite a few hikers out as I made my way up the hill. I did a lot of filming on this hike too as I continue to document our green desert.

I headed north down from the saddle and noted the fencing over the mine shaft that, back in the day, we could hike right next to. The trail, I believe, came straight up that backside (north). In fact, if you read the hiking guide you will see it describes almost a completely different trail as it went nearly straight up the hill from the trailhead and down the otherside. I specifically remember hiking that. I think it was changed by the spring of 2007 to its new layout. As I continued down the mountainside I noticed the burned trees and some cactus, but there were a few wildflowers scattered about too.

At the junction with Overton I encountered a couple hikers as I made my way up and over the saddle. I was getting quite cold by this time and the wind wasn't helping :( . If the sun would stay out it was tolerable. I hiked down the long switchbacks noting some cool geology off to the right (north); guess I never noticed the curving lines on the mountainside rock. It's nice once you get down to the flatter part as the saguaros start to line the trail. I noticed another mine shaft off to my left (southeast) that I hadn't noticed before.

The sun would try to come out now and then but the wind kept blowing. I did get some photos of the green desert floor below. The rockery along this trail is so pretty as well. I decided when I came to the Clay Mine Trail that I would take that as I had never been. I saw a horse group down the other trail but they must have gone the other way. I thot this trail was going to what I thot was the Clay Mine that you can see from the Overton Trail but it wraps around the hill and down. I hiked along the southside past the bench and then saw the horse riders coming up so decided just to hike over to where they had stopped for their photo op done by the Trail Guide. He had hobbled his horse while he aligned the 8 other riders for the group photo. It's always nice to visit with a horse :) .

I headed back and around the hillside to the junction with the Go John. This is really a nice trail with lots to look at between the rocks and flora but it was cold. The sun was teasing me to do the rest of the hike I had planned. I continued down the Go John admiring the extreme green desert floor with the beautiful cactus and filming it. There were many cold poppies too so I decided I was done for the day. I was pretty chilled so I think it was the better decision as I didn't warm up until I was almost home. It's tough being Tibberlocks!

CCW loop in the Cave Creek Regional Park. This was the first hike we ever did when we moved up here from Phoenix in 1999. We used to hike it CW but both the Overton and Go John were routed differently back then.

The Go John used to pass by an open mine shaft with only a warning sign for protection and the Overton was re-routed with a couple of switchbacks around a deep ravine that had a horse skeleton laying in the bottom. Both trails are not only safer now but an easier climb for the touristas.

We completed the loop on the "new" extension of the Clay Mine Trail. We hiked it once right after they opened it and it now looks as if it has always been there. It cuts through the most beautiful half mile deposit of Jasper we've ever seen. Lots of quartz veining also. The should rename it the Jasper Trail as the Jasper Trail just to the east in the same park has absolutely no Jasper. :-k

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good hike. :)

Not my best work. Put on the new shoes (Merrell Moab 2); seemed okay but a tad loose in the heals but I like them otherwise.

Started from Go John TH and headed up the Clay Mine Trail. It really is a pretty trail with the occasional saguaros lining it. I saw 5 people at the intersection with Clay and Overton; obviously tourists. Like all the other trails, they seem longer than I remember ](*,) . It was warm as I made my way north on the Overton where I would encounter two hikers and four horseback riders. That would be the last sign of humans until I started up the south side of Go John. The bottom stretch of this is longer than I thot and the switchback was shorter than I thought.

I rested on the bench at the top of Overton. I was struggling a little today even though I had made good time up to this point. And now to head down Go John with a side glance at the saddle thinking I could just go have a beer, but I kept hiking on my planned route. It seemed it took quite a while to get down to the bottom where I once again sat on the bench. It's nice to do this as it forces you to look around at your surroundings.

This north part of the Go John trail was tough for me and it was a rough part of the trail as it's quite beat up and very rocky in places. I sure didn't enjoy it and I was sweating a lot for some reason. I could feel myself dragging but kept putting one foot in front of the other in spite of the crappy trail. I get spoiled on my city hikes with nice trails for the most part. A little ways before getting to the east side hill I heard coyotes but they didn't bellow very long. This is the second hike in a row I've heard coyotes.

The hill has taken a bit of a beating but not as bad as going down the other side. I did better on the hill than I thot I would but the last 1/4 was a bit of a challenge. I was not having the best hiking day. As I made my way down, this section proved to be longer than I remembered too  . Plus the trail was not in the best shape. Once I got down to where you cross the gully the trail was better for sure as you wrap around the rest of the east side.... which, yes, was longer than I remember.

I was glad to finally hit the south side of Go John and head slowly up the very long hill; but it's a nice grade; not steep at all. After I passed the intersection of Quartz I saw two hikers and while I was sitting on the bench toward the top of Go John (where all the little quartz rocks are), three bikers went by. I finally got to the part of the trail I enjoy which is all those curves as you start down. I did hear coyotes for a moment again too. This side of the trail seems to be in much better condition.

From time to time there was a sweet scent of some sort of flora but I couldn't tell exactly what. There was also the occasional lizard scampering around as well. On the north side I tried my best to avoid looking at the burn areas and was successful for the most part. As I got near the trailhead I encountered my second trail ride for the day. There were seven horses on this one. And then another trail ride came shortly thereafter.

WATCH: 1:50-4:27PM, 6.69 miles, 2226-2657 elevation. 137 avg bpm/166 max. 48% Zone 5 max, 39% Zone 4 Anaerobic, 13% Zone 3 aerobic burning 1108 calories. Starting temp 72.8 sunny and 25% humidity.

Joined a meetup group for this outing. We started the hike from the Slate TH. Soon visited the "Michelin Man" cactus. We then looped around to the Go John trail.

At this point I branched off on my own to vie for a lengthier route. I then veered off onto the Maricopa trail. Goodbye people 😎 I followed it till I lost the trail. I then turned back to the Go John trail.

The next extension was the Overton Trail. Upon completion, I added a bit of the Go John trail I had missed.

While on a different route in CCRP earlier in the week, I noticed that both my 2010 GreenMap and HAZ didn't have recent data reflecting changes to this route. Good thing I enjoy hiking this park. With a mission of setting the record straight, I returned early to gather the requisite data for an updated guide and route. I was rewarded with clear skies, cool temps and solitude.

All that's changed is that the route now extends northeast from Overton to terminate at Go John. In a triplog from last month, @mt98dew surmised the extension was likely completed sometime in early-mid 2020.

Activity at the stables (and evidence along the trail) suggests the guided horseback ride concession is open for business again. Watch your step!

It’s been a long time since I hiked the Clay Mine Trail towards the mine. Started at the Overton lot and hiked Overton Trail CW then left on Clay Mine. Took it until I got to the RV sites and followed the barb wire fence I could see from the road in the camp ground. Followed the fence line until it crossed over a creek giving me just enough crawl space to get under. There are several crossings dirt roads and the one I was looking for takes you to a signed West Boundary spur. I did not select the most direct route but with several apps running I knew where I was and where I needed to get to. Was fun doing a little Pathfinding and off trail hiking.

Midday hike in the CCRP. Did a backended lasso involving primarily the Overton and Clay Mine trails. Started from the visitor center and took the Overton east past the visitor center and play ground to where it connects to the Go John. This part of the loop is relatively flat, but is very powdery from all the horse traffic. (Side note….wondering if the stables are operating this year. There is a sign out front that says “see you in the Fall”, but I haven’t seen any activity the last two times I’ve gone by. It is definitely Fall. Prime trail riding season. Not a huge fan of the guided horse tours, but I hate to see this as another indicator of our struggling economy :( ). Briefly on the Go John to get to the start of the Clay Mine trail. This is a relatively new extension to the Clay Mine trail (probably a year and half old). It gains a little elevation as it runs west along the side of the hill. The trail is in solid shape (minimal horse use) and holds a fairly straight line (no switchbacks) as it rises and eventually intersects with Overton trail. (Back in the day, this intersection was the beginning of the Clay Mine trail). Continued west, past the intersection, gaining a little more elevation before dropping down to reach the trail’s namesake….the Clay mine. The trail continues past this spot for maybe .25 miles where it terminates at the RV campground. Hit this spot and then returned the way I came. This section was the tail of the lasso. When I came to the Overton intersection I headed south down the Overton which brought me quickly back to the TH. Nice short loop. No wildlife and only 4 other users on the trail.

Judy took it easy on me as her legs were sore from 11 mile neighborhood bike ride yesterday morning and then walked most of Dove Valley golf course in the afternoon. Overton CW to Go John to Clay Mine and back to Overton. About a half a dozen volunteers were pulling Globe Mallow on the Go John. Appreciate the effort but I think it’s a waste of time.

Just me today....Judy golfing and Kai’s leg still an issue. Parked at Overton lot and went left at the Y then right at Clay Mine junction, left on Go John, left on Overton back to the lot. Had a young buck trot across the trail and stop. I heard his hoof clicks before I saw him. Only about 50 feet away! I looked in the direction he came from as they are usually not alone. Did not see anything but while trying to get a pic I saw a 4 point further ahead. Was not able to get a descent pic. Also found a phone on the trail and found the owner by yelling at the hiker who past me a few minutes earlier.

Nice day but brought a lot of people out.

Started from Go John TH and headed up hill on Go John, left onto Overton, left on Clay Mine and right on Go John to the parking lot. Judy and I both liked it as elevation gain parts of the trail were spread out. Have worn a neck gaiter the last two cold morning hikes and I like it. Once the AM chill is gone I just put it in my pocket.

Hikin' on a Thursday. Still just feels like a long vacation plus I have to work Mon-Wed next week while my replacement retrieves her car from the east coast.

The entrance has a most interesting card reader set up. Picked this clockwise loop to get in some miles. It was a little warmer than I expected. The Clay Mine Trail once you come off of Go John entrance, is tapped down very nicely than when I was on it last as it just barely been cut. I, of course, was looking forward to the shade of Overton as I hiked the western side of this loop. Encountered 5 people two dogs on this section. Introduced one of the hikers to lichen. As you near the top of Overton, I saw some of the burn area so took a few pictures. This part was still in the shade and it's when you get closer to Go John that you can really see more of the burn that swiped across this section. There were a couple really green plants here and there though.

On my way down Go John I encountered 3 more people and then another 3 at the junction with Clay. The 3 at the junction were looking at a map so I advised them about the loop I just did. However, they wanted to get back to Overton and I advised them on that but the one lady with them said, "no, that's not what we want", so I walked away. I continued on Go John to the bench as you get part way up the eastern hill (checked the temp as it seemed warm, it was 80) and then continued toward the Quartz Trail. I did encounter a very nicely dressed gentleman that looked like he should be hiking in the tropics. A+ for style as everything matched beautifully. :)

I took a break at the north Quartz saddle to take a couple bites of my granola bar; however, it had chocolate in it so it was melty and hard to eat. I headed down the Quartz and Slate only seeing one other soul on a bike. So this is what it's going to be like to hike on a weekday. Got back to Tonto Jr and realized I should have brot a beer to drink but I did go ahead and have a brew when I got home; it's just not the same as sitting at the TH. The only wildlife I saw today was a coyote on the drive in, a lizard and a squirrel. Oh, the 360 distant air was VERY smazy this morning; especially around Black Mountain area it seemed; sorry Greg and Cathy.

For my personal record - Watch numbers: 7.29 on miles in 2:36 avging 2.7 MPH and 130 bpm with a high of 155 bpm. I spent 40 minutes at max Heart Zone 5, an hour at Zone 4, an hour at Zone 3. Burned 1069 calories. Watch says it was 68 degrees and 23% humidity but google said it was 80 at 17% humidity.

So far this week I did a hike on Sunday, a hike on Monday and I went to gym class, Wed I went to a new gym class at a different gym, hike today and tomorrow I'll try a different gym and class again (I now belong to 3 gyms, I'd like to say Clubs but Denny calls me out on that  .) Currently that's why my retirement is like: what am I going to do for exercise today?, which reminds me, I need to go book a class for tomorrow AM.

Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.

After work hike. Was very unfortunate. In need of purchasing an annual pass (been trying for a couple of months, but the visitor centers have been closed) and the visitor was closed here as well (slated to open October 5th). Luckily, there was staff inside the building that could see my despairing look ](*,) and asked how they could help. This is twice the Cave Creek center has assisted during times they were not technically open to the public. Thank You CCRP! :yr: . By getting my annual pass I could, with a clear conscience, hit the Clay Mine trail which has been on my radar for a couple of months. They extended the Clay Mine almost a year ago and I've been wanting to check out this new section.

Started from the visitor center and went CCW on the Overton. Briefly hopped on the Go John trail to get to the beginning of the Clay Mine Trail. This juncture is signed and takes place within .25 miles of the Go John TH. The Clay Mine takes off to the west, quickly crossing a small wash and then gradually gaining elevation. It doesn't gain that much, maybe going 1/5 of the way up the mountain as it wraps around the slopes to connect to the Overton intersection. It is at this intersection where the Clay Mine use to start and everything after this point is the same. Went to the end and turned around. On the way back, when I reached the intersection, I took the Overton back to the TH.

Little warm, but there was a nice breeze which helped. Honestly, I am ready to be done with summer. Enough! No wildlife. Met to hikers at the Go John TH.

As you hike along the West side of the Overton Trail you look down on a dirt road that can be accessed off Overton at a trail sign that says West Boundary. After seeing pics and hearing how crowded the parking lots and trails have been I thought I’d see if I could find the access to this trail from the CCRP campground area so I could stay off the trails in the park and away from people.

I parked in the Overton lot at 8:20 AM and to my surprise there was only 3 cars...normal for a pre-virus day. Had all ready told Judy my plan to walk the road to the campground, so followed the plan. Had a few false starts before I ended up on Clay Mine Trail that ended up taking me over to the Overton Trail! Oh well I tried! Did take the West Boundary Trail and finally got to where I wanted.

While on a narrow part of Overton 3 ladies were approaching me. Best option was to lean into the uphill side with one leg up facing away from the trail. As they got close I said good morning and got into position. First one passed but next 2 stopped right behind me and asked if I was going to climb up there... then they moved closer and looked over my shoulder! The hiker that walked past said ‘I think he is trying to stay away from us’ I said You Got It! My wife was right again as she has been telling me it’s really hard to keep 6 feet away from people while hiking.

Just Kai and I for a 9:50 AM start from the Go John TH. Started up the hill, past Overton turn off to hair pin turn area with a bench. Turned around and made a right onto Overton, left on to new Clay Mine then right on GJ to the GJ parking lot. Hit the sweet spot on the weather as I hiked between 54 and 63 degrees.
