Started from Pima Canyon Trailhead around 6AM, and it was a cooler morning in the upper 70s, but still very humid. There were surprisingly few people out on a relatively nice morning for August. SoMo clearly got quite a bit of rain in the big storm on Monday--there were lots of little washouts along the trails and down in Pima Wash, a few remaining puddles with standing water, and millipedes enjoying the lingering moisture. Didn't see much wildlife but crossed paths with @trekkin_gecko on the way back up from Mormon Trailhead.

Back to SoMo for another lap through Hidden Valley/Mormon, starting around 6AM. The trails weren't too busy, and it wasn't ridiculously hot but humid enough that I was sweating a lot. Not much to note out there today--saw a jackrabbit but no particularly interesting wildlife, and it was in the low 90s by the end.

We got out for a morning hike on the Fourth of July, starting around 6AM from Pima Canyon. It was in the upper 70s but a little humid as we got going, and there weren't many other people out there on the holiday enjoying the relatively cool weather. We stuck to the usual route through Hidden Valley we've done a lot recently, and the trails remained relatively quiet throughout. It was still only in the upper 80s when we finished ~9:30AM, so not a bad morning to be outside.

It had been a while since I'd hiked with TboneKathy, so when she said she was heading to SoMo on Saturday morning, I told her I'd join and set an alarm even though sleeping in sounded very tempting. It had been ~6 weeks since we were at South Mountain together, and since our creativity apparently hasn't improved during that time, we defaulted to the same route we hiked often in the spring , through Hidden Valley and over toward Mormon Trailhead. Pretty typical day on the trails...medium-busy, toasty but not ridiculously hot for June, in the mid-90s when we finished around 9:30AM.

0700 start time at mormon trail
went west on national, up to the benchmark then to buena vista lookout
same way back
i've been avoiding hidden valley since i got stung by a bee right in the neck a few weeks ago
even though that bee is dead by now, there might be more bees
good hike, slightly different combo
saw a few hikers starting out on mormon trail but only mountain bikers on national then no one else
should be starting earlier, but wanted to see what the heat closure on mormon trail looked like
gate to parking lot was closed, my car was the only one left
it would be very easy to park in the street and hike
no enforcement
saw one chuckwalla far away
lots of doves snacking on saguaro fruit

I had another slow morning at work, and TBK mentioned she was going for a hike at SoMo, so I tagged along. The clouds and cool temperatures from earlier in the week were gone, but the trails were still relatively quiet. We looped through Hidden Valley, over to Mormon Trailhead, then returned via Javelina Canyon. Nothing too interesting on this one, but good to get out again this week. A little warm by the end, but not too bad.

Joined TboneKathy for a morning SoMo hike with no particular route in mind when we started. I went up Marcos de Niza, then we took National to Hidden Valley and down to Mormon TH and back up. We looped back on Javelina, and I returned via Marcos de Niza. Relatively quiet on the trails today with very few mountain bikers out. The ocotillo blooms are slowing down, but more saguaro flowers than last week. Didn't see any snakes or interesting wildlife, but the Horseback Hike Patrol made another appearance today. Ended up unintentionally hitting exactly 10.00 miles...very precise outcome for aimless wandering.

Hadn't been on Geronimo for SEVEN YEARS! ](*,) :o

Such an enjoyable track. Should try to hit this one again before 2030.

Visited the lookout spur near the top of Geronimo. Not sure I've been to that one before. Seems unlikely that I haven't though. Nice city views from up there.

Kelly organized a group hike utilizing some of the SoMo trails I don’t get a chance to hike very often. I was a few minutes late meeting up with her, Bruce, and John, thanks to annoying traffic between my daughter’s school and the trailhead. It’s been so long since I’ve hiked with Bruce, he wasn’t sure I still existed. Or maybe he just forgot who I am. We got started up Geronimo a few minutes after 0730. Occasional shade helped the climb feel less terrible.

At the Buena Vista lot up top, we debated our route options while staying within time constraints. Headed east on National, first making a side trip to the benchmark, then continued east to Mormon. Headed down Mormon trail, which I’ve not been on in quite a while. Saw one Speckled rattler, which John and I had passed without noticicing it, so we had to backtrack when Bruce hollered for us. Small one, curled up in the shade. After that, it was a quick walk through the neighborhood back to the cars.

Nice mirning for a workout hike, and good to hike with Kelly, Bruce, and John again!

arranged a local hike with linda, then we invited a few more miscreants
bruce and 10s showed up at geronimo at 0730 and we got going soon after
linda set a good pace up geronimo
at bv lookout, we debated on options
went up to harvester benchmark and back to national, then east to mormon trail and down
finished on the streets
bruce and i crossed paths with a gal on mormon who saw a snake
we chased it around and took a few photos
linda and john came back to see it
we made sure the gal got safely past it
not everyone considers a rattlesnake sighting a photo op
good to hike with everyone, hadn't seen bruce in awhile
thanks, y'all!

Kelly through out an invite, for me to drive across the valley in rush hour traffic. When Denny and Chums backed out, I was in. She failed to tell me that the master of scrambled photos was joining, but it was too late, I was already there.

Up Geronimo with quite a bit in the shade and sporadic clouds. It's a steady climb to the Harvester benchmark. We took a group Fliver formation photo at the benchmark and started down to hit National and then Mormon. By the time we hit Mormon, we'd seen a handful of bikers and hikers.

On Mormon we ran into more people and a Speckled Rattler. Kelly, Linda and John were in 7th heaven and just about wet themselves. It was starting to warm up a bit as we finished (or as Linda says, surface of the moon hot.)

Nice seeing the gang again and catching up. It's been awhile.

The four of us met at 7:30AM, my first time starting from Geronimo in nearly seven years. Nice clouds this morning and quite a bit of shade on the way up to Buena Vista. With the unfortunate Fliver news recently going HAZ-public, we decided to hike up to the Harvester benchmark, where we posed for a group photo in his honor, then backtracked to National and looped over toward Mormon.

We ended up with a two-snake hike...Kelly and I saw a small non-rattlesnake along National, then we all saw a speckled rattler on Mormon that someone pointed out to Bruce and Kelly. Coincidentally, Kelly's wish at the beginning of the hike was to see a speckled rattler. Her ability to manifest wishes into reality is impressive (Kelly, I could use some winning lotto numbers, hint hint). We continued down to Mormon TH, then walked through the neighborhoods back to the starting point.

Nice weather, just starting to get warm at the end, and a fun start to the day. Great to see everyone and chat again, and most importantly, I got to hear the The Eagle's side of the story in the ongoing 10s photo sequencing controversy of 2024-25. Now I don't know who to believe!!

Did Mormon trail with Victoria for the first time in a while. It was good to get back into hiking shape but tough to get away for long enough to do a hike.

Back to SoMo again for the second straight morning...TboneKathy mentioned she was going hiking, and I wasn't going to pass up an opportunity to take advantage of another cool morning. We hiked a counter-clockwise loop up Ridgeline/Javelina Canyon, with a spur down to Mormon Trailhead, then came back through Hidden Valley. Another hazy day and a little busier on the trails than yesterday, but the temperature was great. The ocotillos are blooming nicely, but nothing too unusual about the hike other than some Amish(?) hikers with smart phones...that's a new one.

We (Ember and I) got out early - about 15 minutes before sunrise. It was a cool, cloudy morning, with a slight breeze - great for hiking.

A couple of years ago, my sister and I tried to hike this loop clockwise, and I died just before the summit. Queasy stomach, shaky legs, etc. (I blame the double red blood donation from the previous day!)

The week before Easter, my sister, @neight33, and my son @AZPopeye93, are hiking this full loop. This time we'll do it counter-clockwise (anti-clockwise for our friends across the pond!)

Today was just an attempt to make sure I can do it. We hiked up to the summit - the junction of the Mormon Trail with the Mormon Loop Trail.

From there, we turned around and hiked back the way we came. A lovely day. Lots of nice people on the trail. I really enjoyed getting out.

Got out for another mid-week morning hike--a good excuse to miss an unnecessary meeting at work. I pushed the limits of my creativity and followed the same route I did last week, but started a little earlier this time and was on Marcos de Niza for the sunrise. We went through Hidden Valley, then down to Mormon Trailhead before looping back on Javelina Canyon, with some short petroglyph detours.

On the way back, a diamondback crossed the trail, the first snake I've seen this season...fittingly, just in time for the D-Backs opening day. More interesting than the snake was the (over)reaction of a hiker who approached and started freaking out: "Oh no! @*&% no!! I've lived here 20 years and never seen a rattlesnake!" Well, she has now :). I couldn't tell if she was scared, excited, or both, but she started taking pictures. Overall, a moderately busy day on the trails, lots of blooming ocotillo, and nice weather in the morning as it starts to cool off for the weekend.

Another slow Friday morning at work provided a good excuse to get outside for a few hours. We missed the sunrise, but it was a nice morning and not too busy at the beginning. Started up Marcos de Niza and decided to hike through Hidden Valley over to Mormon Trailhead since I hadn't been there in quite a while. The crowds started to pick up closer to Mormon TH, including some directionally challenged hikers that included someone pointing northeast from slightly above Mormon and asking, "Is that Fat Man's Pass?"

I did some wandering off trail and found the Sun God petroglyph, a mine shaft, and a relative of a famous Goat Hill cactus, and we looped back on Javelina to National, and I went up Marcos de Niza again, where I narrowly missed having to dodge a busload of kids on a field trip. Not much in the way of wildlife, but I did see Champion the three-legged dog and two different people hiking in jeans--a bold but fashionable choice on a fairly warm day.
