Stayed local this weekend so I picked the Windgate-Bell Loop for a decent workout hike that I haven't done in 8 or 9 years. Andy was looking for somewhere to hike and this fit the bill for him, too.

I did a variation to try a figure 8 of the loop to add some mileage and AEG by incorporating the Gateway Loop Trail. We started up Windgate Pass, took Gateway over to Bell Pass, looped over both passes CCW then decided to cop out and take the Desert Park Trail rather than complete the figure 8. That bottom part of Windgate Pass gets a bit too steep and rocky after 9 miles.

Desert Park is still rocky, but mostly level and almost zero traffic. It's only a half mile longer than taking Windgate Pass back to the trailhead, but it's easier on the feet and legs.

Very cloudy, hazy, and even a bit gloomy at the start. I had zero complaints about this as it kept the temperature almost chilly, which was perfect for the slog up Bell Pass. The last part of Bell Pass was still in the shade, which helped even more. By the time we were over Bell Pass the sun was out, which made mildly better lighting for pictures, but not much. On the west side of the slope coming down Bell Pass, there's what looks like a mining road in the McDowell Mtn park area. I'm pretty sure it's not a trail. I tried to find on a satellite view but was having trouble. Possible future scouting hike.

Bell Pass Trail has a "Steeper/Less Steep" split that I don't remember seeing last time. We took the steeper section, which gave me Mt. Ord flashbacks.

Heavy traffic at the start with the hordes arriving and waiting for Scottsdale to open the gates, then it thinned out the further we got in. Saw a big group of 20+ people with a group of kids, then a few on Windgate Pass on the way back. One biker on Desert Park and that was it.

It's been a long time since I've hiked in this area. The last time was at least 10 years ago and it was going up to Tom's Thumb via Gateway Loop Trail. When Chris told me he was thinking of doing a loop in the area, I thought it would be nice to visit these trails again.

The plan was to start up the Gateway/Windgate Trail and then cross-over to the Bell Pass Trail and complete the loop. We arrived about 6am and the gate for the trailhead was closed and we found ourselves in a long line of vehicles waiting to get in. We didn't wait long and the gate opened up. I guess we weren't the only ones with a plan to start early.

I have done so many remote trails lately (with the exception of the Flatiron last month), it felt kinda odd starting off on a hike with a 100 or so of my fellow humans along for the hike. As we started up, there was some space between groups, but Chris and I are hardly "speed hikers" and groups younger and healthier folks passed us by.

When we got to the Gateway Pass turn off, the crowds thinned out. I have never been on this section of the trail and the rest of the hike was new to me with the exception of the bits of the Gateway Trail we used to return. Gateway Pass was nice, but once we turned on to the Bell Pass Trail, that was the nicest part of the hike for sure. The gloomy, cloudy skies opened up a little and the sun shined through every once in a while. The higher up we went, the nicer the scenery. We came across groups of hikers going up and a couple going down.

Once on the saddle and starting down, the landscape changes. The saguaros, cholla, ocotillo and palo verde disappeared and it was mostly grassy hillsides. The views on the way down were nice though. Fountain Hills, Four Peak, the Superstitions were all visible, albeit obscured by the hazy conditions. We encountered a group of mountain bikers and a large pack of kids in a youth group in the area. Once we made the turn to head up to Windgate Pass the number of hikers diminished.

Getting up to Windgate Pass was a more up/down path than I was expecting. Bell Pass was all up. And, once we made it to the saddle, the trail hugged the hillside and also had a little up and down. The scenery on the west slope improved as well. More saguaro and blooming ocotillo. Nice view of the mansions in the area too. Someone has a lot of money for sure.

When we made it to the Gateway Trail, Chris suggested we take the Desert Park Trail back to the trailhead. This trail was mostly flat and zip-zagged a wash in between a golf course and houses. Not the most scenic trail, but it nicer on my feet and hip than the Gateway Trail for sure.

A good day in the McDowells/MSP area. I am still a Superstition snob and will stick with what I know, but it was nice to explore a new area and it's always good to hike with Chris. Thanks for the invite!

No nutrition waist channels were signed into the summit register for 05-May,'18, so the Linked trail guide one did for that day is a lie. It would be fun to research how many more they've embellished. :-s I digress, but at 5:41am the mindless greyhounds all crushed onto the Gateway Loop Trail, so I chose the more mellow Desert Park start. The rat race was avoided because none of them were seen again for the rest of my hike and double T solo. The East End ascent was hot and humid, then some nice breezes and cloud cover helped immensely. I need to remember that the Tom's Thumb TH doesn't have water because two liters was slightly inadequate.

The original plan was to hike the Desert Park/Gateway Loop with a spur that's shown on the maps that heads northwest towards a high school. Once I got towards the end of that, I discovered a trail that headed north paralleling the wash. That ended at a cul-de-sac, and I headed further north on the wash until I got to 4 miles and then turned around. On the way back I followed the same trail further south until it ended and then took a DC Ranch path (i.e. sidewalk), to the trails. After that I took the Horseshoe Trail to the Gateway Loop and then the Bajada interpretive trail.

Saw a few other hikers here and there, 3 or 4 bikers early on. shady and cool to start, got a bit hot towards the end, but not too bad.

We decided to start our ascent with the Desert Park Trail because when the gate opens in the morning, ~98% of the hikers simultaneously crush onto the Gateway Loop like greyhounds chasing a hare, which is definitely one of the silly aspects of MSP hiking (it is Snottsdale). : wink :
This hike is essentially the same as the Tom's Thumb Loop off Windgate Pass Trail, except that it omits The Lookout. It seems fatuous that they're almost duplicates. This was Dese's first time at the McDowell's highpoint and only my second. I may have one more highly illegal ascent planned, but that'll be a triplog for another day...

Started 5:15am, ended 8:30am. Gateway visitor center to Inspiration Point on Gateway Loop trail and Windgate Pass Trail. Comfortable to start, about 68 degrees. In the shadow of the mountains for a good part of the hike up to Inspiration Point. A few hikers in the area of visitor center but few once I got out on the trail. Very nice at Inspiration Point just listening to the breeze and call of the birds.

More hikers on the way back as I got closer to the visitor center. No surprise. I hiked a short distance on Desert Park trail and ran into a roadrunner. He led me to his nest several feet off the ground in the arm of a saguaro where a young roadrunner was nesting.

Quick hike in the McDowell's today, nice out except it was windy and chilly most of the day. The clouds kept rolling in and out. I made a quick visit to PK. 3515, never did that one, and it was nice. There were blue barrels in a few places off trail on Windgate, covered up by netting and rocks. I wonder what they were there for?

Joined a meetup and wasn't exactly sure where we were going. Knew to meet at Gateway TH. What a difference! Going on a Tues instead of a Sun= a tiny fraction of the people. 😀

The group turned around at TT9. I didn't know what that was. Upon getting there, I decided to continue by myself to Tom's Thumb. I then created a loop by taking Desert Park back. Can't say I'd recommend that trail tho.

i was thinking that i would rate each trail by the number of people i saw on the trail until i got to the last trail (desert park trail), where i didn't see anyone but it was surrounded by views of people's backyards. i had the most fun coming down out of windgate pass and back up the east end trail. i took my break up at the lookout with just one other person, and i also really enjoyed coming down the tom thumb trail in the rain. oh yes, the rain was so sweet.

side note: i had trouble with route scout losing me again for nearly all of the east end trail, and then although i was following the micky d loop route up until that time and also had the tom's thumb loop off windgate pass saved in my files, it continued me on the latter route. i'll look for an idiot's user forum on this to figure that out.

also, since tibber does this, i figured i'd include my stats from my fitness watch: total time: 6:49:25, distance: 13.98 miles, active calories: 1,703, total calories: 2,327, elevation gain 3,096 ft., average heart rate: 128 bpm, average pace: 29'16". weather 60 degrees, humidity 30%.

Did a variant of the Tom’s Thumb Loop following a route laid out by our beloved @The_Eagle.

Beautiful day out there and a lot of very nice trails. The climb up to the Lookout on Tom’s Thumb trail, then looping around on East End trail and climbing Bell Pass were the highlights for me. Neat views out to Four Peaks on the backside of the hike.

It was nice to finally get out there in the McDowells and really poke around a bit

With the rain the night before a nice walk in the desert was calling. I'd never hiked the Desert Park Trail in the MSP so figured it would be a nice start/end to the lasso.

Desert Park Trail We both really enjoyed this trail as it offered a lot of solitude in a typically crowded area. On the hike out we saw no one, and on the return we only passed a couple mountain bikers and two pairs of hikers.

Tom's Thumb Trail Great trail. Hands down a better climb, better scenery, and much more solitude than the climb from the north. Got some really nice cloud views as we hiked.

Lookout Trail Another trail I really enjoy. Views are excellent, typically not crowded, and some nice areas to find a couple rocks to take a short break after the climb up. With the wind it was noticeably cooler at the Lookout.

East End Trail A bit steep but always enjoyable going down. With the recent rains the footing was much better and offered less chance of slipping.

Windgate Pass Trail Saw a pair of bow hunters in full camouflage on the trail :-k I have a love/hate relationship with this trail. I love the back section past the pass and although hate is a harsh word for any trail, the front section from the trailhead to the pass is one of my less favorites in the MSP. It is just way to crowded for me to get any enjoyment while hiking in a train. The turnoff to the Desert Park Trail couldn't come quick enough.

Great lasso loop and will do it again for sure.

Bruce's week to pick. I requested a good trail-hike since I'm not up to snuff after a short hiatus. He came back with a 5,700 AEG idea... my kind of humor but we agreed to cut out 45%

We were on the frontline of the army of hikers since the preserves don't open until 5 hrs before the day is half over. The army was spaced out hundreds of yards but not wild-approved half-mile spacing.

The ascent up Bell Pass always gives the heart a workout. A nice breeze helped and I shed my AZ winter coat, a long sleeve shirt. Bell Pass down to Windmill was pleasant. Before heading up East End we took a slightly late five mile break. I saw a jackrabbit a couple times in the distant as I was sitting down. Apparently stalked us making a full circle around. Leaving, surprised he was nearby on the flipside.

We had a small group holding handily a furlong behind us heading up East End Trail. The boulders are cool. Tom's Thumb to Lookout Trail was busy with all ages. Squeaky friendly too. Heading up Lookout Trail I expected nobody. One group of 8-10 then three or four couples in our journey out-n-back.

We got the prime end lookout spot for a break. With everything so green it was a spectacular view. Bruce asked a couple wanting their photo taken where they were from. We run across more Michigan folk than seemingly possibly by standard Vegas odds. Of course Bruce is from Michigan so I know the next five minutes of my life will be filled with stories of ice fishing, hunting and kicking back at the rotary club on twelfth street.

The least used part of Tom's Thumb Trail is heading down west. The tread is not characteristic of the park but it's one of the best stretches up or down.

Opted for Desert Park Trail to complete the loop. Upscale neighborhood hiking at it's finest in the Valley of the Sun IMHO. Easier, quicker Saturday. Fanny packed it and boy howdy is a five pound pack nice!

We needed something on trail with different distance options. Perfect weather in the McDowells.

We were going to be starting before the 7:02 Gateway TH gate opening, so I parked at the Legacy Blvd/Thompson Peak Parkway TH, that I've parked at many times before. Based on the slip of paper on my windshield on our return, not an option anymore.

I've done variations of this loop quite a few times.

Things that make me redoing portions of this loop include, the climb and huge boulders going up the East End Trail, the views at the end of the Lookout Trail and the tread and views going down the Tom Thumb Trail.

We stopped at Mountain Spring on the way down and it was dry.
Not sure if there is a break in the pipe above or not.

It was kinda nice and unusual to be home by 1:30 on a hike day.

We did Windgate Pass Loop a little different than normal starting from the Legacy parking lot instead of Gateway. Started on the Desert Park Trail to Windgate Trail and over the pass. Then around the backside over Bell Pass to Gateway Loop and down to Horseshoe Trail back to Legacy. Nice loop with cloudy and somewhat cool overcast skies.

Sadly I've got stuff going on so I just can't get out there for a lengthy hike to get pictures. Friday I took my camera to work and got some pictures driving in and from the office. I had hoped to go up to North Carefree after work but it was just starting to pour again. All day at my office I can see the McDowells and the clouds would come all the way down to the foothills and up a few times. After work they almost lifted up completely before coming back down again but I was able to snap some pics of Tom's Thumb and some of the McDowells before driving home with an ominous sky in front of me.

Snow Day. Well I knew I wanted to hike in the McDowells but the particular area was closed so plan B would be the Gateway Trail. On the 101, ALL of the high country to the north (the Mesas) were completely covered in snow. There was one long line of snow from New River Mesa to the Tonto Foothills. It was impressive! After I had my hair done, I headed north with the throngs of other vehicles. Many would stop along Pima even before hitting Cave Creek Road. Once I started heading west and starting driving up a tad in elevation, well there were vehicles stopped everywhere. I tried to film the drive but when you're keeping your eye on the road, you miss a little of the sites. There was snow on all the roofs and the further I drove the deeper it got. "Where am I?" was definitely the theme these last two days.

I pulled over just south of the Raven's View and squeezed Tonto Jr off the road near a high point as my goal was the Mazzies. The snow was quite deep on the golf course as it was all the way to the Mazzies and Superstitions and McDowells. There wasn't much clear shoulder to walk on so I was in the snow quite a bit. I had my hiking boots on so I was good. I tried to find the best photo ops incorporating the scene in front of me and in the distance. Not sure how far I walked but it was until my views weren't that great anymore and I turned and headed back. It was so bright it was even hard looking through my view finder.

I had to walk through some deeper snow alongside the road this time as the traffic was too much to risk getting too close to the road. Humboldt Mountain and the Tonto Foothills and homes were deep in snow. I finally got back to Tonto Jr and we headed south. I found one more place for a quick pullover to get some more pictures looking west and north. Can you imagine what it was like when these folks woke up to see this winter wonderland? :o People were having a great time and though I don't like being around that many people, who could blame them. It was fun to see their smiles; heck I was even grinning ear to ear at all the snow-bathed beauty.

Oh ya, the hike. I finally made it down to the Gateway TH. It was very crowded. I decided to head north on the Desert Park Trail as I had not been on it before and it would hopefully provide the angle I wanted to get my photos. Next I intersected with the Horseshoe Trail, another new trail for me before arriving at the Gateway Loop Trail. I had already encountered a dozen people. Little did I know, this was just the beginning.

I headed south and then east as far as I could to get my shot of snow-capped Thompson Peak with the saguaros in the foreground. But first, I had to get through all these people. I seemed to be heading the wrong way. I felt bad for one older lady that was struggling down this side of the trail. She still had another mile. I don't think the younger folks with her bothered to check the mileage. As continued throngs of people kept coming toward me I forged on. I finally got to the section where I could get my pictures and turn around. At least now I would be going with the flow as I encountered fewer people.

Once back at the bottom toward the TH the throngs seem to re-group or something. It just never stopped the entire way. And now, I hoped to miss the traffic from the Arabian Horse Show as it was later in the afternoon and I did.
