1st trip
This was my third and last of three short, off-trail hikes from my planned 6nt/7day Mogollon Rim- Camp Grasshopper trip from 6/14 to 6/20/23.

A number of years back, I had researched and confirmed a recommended and safely doable off-trail hiking route into an upper section of Barbershop Canyon Creek from my [ Camp Grasshopper - Mogollon Rim-C/Site#2 ] . This June'23 visit I planned to reconfirm today- 6/19/23, to clean-up, and to rock cairn a/r this HAZ previously posted route.

Now with minor revisions, added "key" WPs and my 6/19 photoset with more detailed pics, pic captions, and pic tag notes, I am now reposting this recommended and revised Gps off-trail route to "Enter/Exit" Barbershop Canyon Creek.

As it turned out, it was a good decision for me to wait until today-6/19 instead of the day before as originally planned to do this hike section as it took me much longer than I originally thought, to follow and clean-up my old Gps off-trail route down to enter Barbershop Canyon Creek.

As I mentioned in my 6/18 triplog, hopefully on my next visit, I will now be able to more quickly hike down to Barbershop Canyon Creek via this updated 6/19 route and then hike down canyon (distance still tbd) to exit back up at my second recommended 6/18 off-trail hike Entry/Exit location, then connecting back with FR139C for a loop back to Park/TH Start at my Campsite #2 [ photo ]

We decided to check out this area in between the monsoon rains. It was an easy descent into Barbershop canyon. The creek was flowing well, ranging from 3-15 inches deep, and 1-10 feet wide. There were well-defined use trails the entire way along the canyon, with numerous creek crossings necessary. There were wildflowers, butterflies, and birds chirping everywhere. Much of the canyon was carpeted in ferns. It was very peaceful. We saw no wildlife in the canyon other than the aforementioned butterflies and ferns, probably because of our voices.
We exited the canyon at the Barbershop trail, and followed the trail to Dane Canyon, which was completely dry. The original plan was to go a few miles up Dane Canyon, then loop back to the starting point, but the downpour and lightning started, and some of us were apprehensive about being in an unknown canyon during a monsoon, so we took Barbershop trail back to FR139C to our vehicle. We saw 2 elk while walking back on the road, and 6 more elk while driving out on FR139. Overall beautiful, peaceful experience, cut short by monsoon rains. Will be back.

Headed to the rim to put a few miles in the pines. About 80% of both canyons were flowing nicely. A few short stretches were dry, especially at the higher southern ends of each canyon. It might have been possible to stay dry, but it was a whole lot easier to splash than avoid it. Strong winds kept our eyes peeled skyward regularly, but down on the ground it was nicely sheltered.

Had a couple of pups in the group so we managed to avoid any wildlife sightings. Also didn't see any bipeds until a group camping at the Barbershop crossing a bit below the spring. I lost a few dollars when learning that they were actually observing fire restrictions. Seemed like a good bet to me.

1st trip
Lower Merritt

This trip to the rim is to finish up some undone sections of Barbershop and Dane Canyons. I started out on FSR 139c that follows the ridge between Merritt Draw and Barbershop Canyon. At about 2 miles in parked along 139c and continued on foot along 139c to FR 9735p, which is an old logging road now closed to vehicles. This old logging road takes you to the drop off point to Merritt Draw which is just at the point where Maverick Canyon enters Merritt Draw from the west. Merritt Draw at this point all the way to Barbershop Canyon is fairly easy to navigate unlike the central portion of Merritt Draw which is all choked up with dead fall. Both times I’ve been to Merritt Draw the central portion was dry but on this trip the lower portion the stream was flowing above ground. At about .4 miles from Maverick Canyon is Drift Fence Spring, I did not see the spring but I was not really looking for it either. After two miles of fairly easy walking along the stream Merritt Draw empties into Barbershop Canyon. The U Bar Trail also crosses Barbershop at this point.

Lower Barbershop

Lower Barbershop Canyon from the Merritt Draw intersection to the Dane Creek intersection is 1.6 miles. There was a trail crew working on the U Bar Trail where it crosses Barbershop Creek. After a short chat I continued on down Barbershop Canyon. This canyon is a little bit more overgrown than Merritt but still easy to walk with just a little bit of maneuvering around rocks and dead fall. In almost no time at all Dane Canyon joins Barbershop from the right. Took a short break at the Dane Barbershop junction and pondered about Barbershop Canyon as it continues on down to East Clear Creek, Wonder how doable that is, Oh well, that’s another day.

Dane Canyon

One look at Dane Canyon as I approached it from Barbershop Canyon and I got this feeling this was going to be pure torture. The entrance to the canyon was choked with brush. As I took my break I also kept thinking about how hard was Dane Canyon going to be. As I found out when I started hiking in Dane, it wasn’t as bad as I anticipated. It is more congested than the other canyons I was in but wasn’t terrible. I worried about nothing. This canyon would be a little harder if the water was higher especially in the marshy areas. Beautiful canyon and the almost 3 miles went by pretty quickly with all the scenery. Well worth the effort to see this lower part of Dane Canyon. I'm usually very careful about tripping or falling since I am alone but this canyon did me in twice. Luckily both falls didn't result in injury. The first time it was a hidden branch that snagged my boot the second time it was while crossing a stream stepping on a rock that had small logs on it hanging onto a bush to keep my balance and the logs under my feet shifted and I went down. The sad part is all while I was performing this maneuver I was thinking to myself this is a bad idea. I need to listen to that little voice in my head when it is screaming "BAD IDEA". I took the U Bar Trail where it crosses Dane Canyon back to Barbershop Trail and headed up Barbershop from there.

Barbershop Canyon

At the junction of the U Bar Trail and Barbershop Canyon I headed upstream about 3.5 miles to my exit point to FSR 139c. This portion of the Barbershop like the previous portion was fairly easy to navigate. Would definitely be a little harder if the water was higher. It does require a lot of stream crossings and in places going around dead fall. There was one spot that required crossing a log jam in the creek. Even though it’s a little bit of extra work it is worth it to see this portion of the canyon.

The sandstone rocks in all these canyons are Coconino sandstone of the Paleozoic era about 260 Mya and are an eolian deposit, remnants of sand dunes. You can see the cross hatched pattern typical of windblown deposits. Occasionally these deposits are swept away flat by some ancient event only to have more windblown deposits laid down and this is repeated over and over again. I wondered what that event was and how much time passed between events. Barbershop and Dane Canyons had some excellent examples of this along some of the canyon walls.

This section of Barbershop Canyon is really nice. After reading Joe and Bruce's descriptions of this area, I chose to make a short loop approaching from Dane Canyon. Getting down into Dane is pretty straight forward. The first few hundred meters are a little dull, but once you enter the confluence with Barbershop it quickly becomes clear that this is a rewarding hike through a unique part of the Rim.

Dane Canyon had a trickle of water flow and multiple pools. Barbershop was flowing well. The sound of the water was mesmerizing. There are few things that calm the desert soul like a steady sandstone stream.

In Barbershop, there are clear game trails that stop and start along the banks. Bushwhacking is fairly minimal. However, there are still a couple mandatory crossings. Exiting Barbershop was a little steep, but I had identified a break in the Coconino Sandstone as my exit route and I stuck with it. The first 350ft of climbing was the most challenging. The incline soon relented, and I enjoyed the views over the canyon.

Another item to note, FR321 has recently been graded and was in pretty good condition (still some sharp rocks in the middle of the road).

This was a beautiful day in the high country. I think Barbershop canyon must be among the most beautiful places I've visited on the rim. Ample water and so much electric green vegetation- such a lush canyon. We hiked out of the canyon and took our lunch at Dane Spring. The day was getting hotter and it was pretty hot in direct sunlight which made me feel really lethargic. Once we got back to the car we relaxed a bit before driving back down to the valley.

This is always good hike to do in the summer and it’s been a while since last time. We started on Barbershop Trail #91 parking at FR 145 junction and hiking into Barbershop Canyon. Once in the canyon we headed downstream for about 6 miles to the U-Bar Trail junction. Lots of water in Barbershop with a few pools deep enough for a good swim. Everything was spring green including the ferns which were not quite full grown.

Reaching U-Bar trail junction we took short break before heading up out of Barbershop Canyon on the first uphill of the day. The climb is short and not too steep before it levels out on McClintock Ridge. Then down into Dane Canyon which had decent water but less than Barbershop. Continued on U-Bar and out of Dane Canyon and over to Dane Spring. The spring is a really nice spot where we had late lunch and spring was running strong from a pipe.

After the lunch break we had about 4 or 5 miles back to the start. Staying on U-Bar back to Barbershop Trail we passed a few spots with water including Coyote Spring. The one exception was upper Dane Canyon which was dry although we probably could have found water not too far downstream. Got back to the vehicle by 4pm. Great hike and stroll through the pines!

I've done this loop or some version of this loop quite a few times. Its always awesome. There's plenty of water out there right now-- I don't think Lily ever had to go more than a mile and half without cooling her feet off.

The four of us headed north for a nice day hike on the rim. We met at Walmart off Dobson & the 202 and made the drive up & started hiking around mid-morning from FR 145. We dropped down the Barbershop Trail and then headed north in Barbershop Canyon. This was my third time here and I really enjoy this canyon. The going is fairly easy although there is a lot of rock hopping and deadfall to step over. We really enjoyed this canyon and took our time hiking through. Once we reached the U Bar junction we took a short break before the climb. From there it was slow going as we headed for Dane Spring where we took our lunch break. We enjoyed lunch and I filtered a liter of water. It was a warm and sunny day. After that we continued north and made good time as we completed our loop.

I really enjoy hiking on the rim during summer. It’s much cooler compared to Phoenix and the hiking is very easy going. Thanks to everyone for coming out and thanks to Kyle for driving!

After waking up at Camp Grasshopper, we said goodbye to Randy and Larry and headed down Hank's route into Barbershop Canyon. Its a bit of a doosey but a good access point. The canyon was beautiful as always but amazingly overgrown since my last visit a month or so ago. We had originally intended to go check out the convergence of Barbershop and Dane Canyons but I was feeling sluggish and my friend was having some severe allergies down there so we decided to skip and just take the U-bar over to Dane Spring to camp. We got there pretty early and did a fair share of napping all afternoon. One group of backpackers came through late in the afternoon but seemed to be in a hurry. We went to bed pretty early. There was a bit of coyote barking but not much else going on. In the morning I was woken up by someone hike through at around 5:30am. Jeezus, that's early.

We broke camp pretty late and headed out. We only saw one other pair of backpackers who had stayed near Coyote Spring the night before. It was warmer than the day before and Lily was very happy with water at Coyote Spring. I hoped for water at the Dane crossing but there was none. I went downstream a little ways hoping for a pool for her to cool off in but no such luck. I knew there would be plenty in Barbershop Canyon-- she actually took a little swim which is uncommon for her.

We headed down Barbershop Cyn. My friend's allergies were not being kind. Luckily upper Barbershop is much easier to get through than the lower section and we made it to our exit point pretty quick. Than route is one steep :pk: . We got back to camp and unfortunately didn't run into Randy or Larry. It looked like Randy had left but Larry was just off exploring. It was a great couple of days in one of my favorite area.

Great area, and nice to finally see part of the Cabin Loop. Thanks to Kyle for setting this up, especially recommending that we head down Barbershop Canyon, which was scenic the whole way. Just some deadfall here and there to navigate, and the dogs were having a great time. The little climbs in and out of the canyons were enough to get the blood pumping, and I really like the area after the climb out of Dane Canyon. Spruce/fir forest hiking was pleasant, and the pups enjoyed the shade, green grass, and constant water. Good day

Great hike today with Scott and the dogs. We parked along FR145 and dropped into Barbershop Canyon. We took the canyon to the U-Bar and finished up on the Barbershop Trail. I love this loop and there was tons of water for the dogs. Dane Canyon had more water at the U-Bar crossing than I've ever seen before.

Headed out for a loop hike, but I had to go back to get the Bronco. One hiker was having troubles. All in all it was a great day hiking. Did not see much wildlife along the trail, but still had a great time. Seen and enjoyed some blackberrys the fruit type. Also seen some wild hops growing, too bad though no hops on them, but I was able to get a small root to try and grow back home. There has been lots of needed rain up there, it was muggy in areas, and lots of mushrooms.

This was planned to be a backpack but the weather totally screwed us. I wonder if I can still count it as a backpack since I carried around a 30 pound pack all day :-k

A friend of mine has been wanting me to take her on her first backpacking trip so we worked out a weekend and the plan was set. I would take her through Barbershop Canyon starting on the south end. Once through the canyon, we would decide on the rest of the route. I wanted to see how she was doing. The first option would be to head west and try to camp near Aspen Spring giving us a long day and a short easy day back on the Houston Brothers. The second option was to head east and camp down near the Ubar / Dane Canyon crossing giving us two pretty even days returning via Ubar and Barbershop Trails.

Our morning was beautiful. It was a little warm but Lily had water to cool off in all day. Both waterfalls were flowing. We made it to the Ubar crossing and decided to head east for the second option. As soon as we climbed out of the canyon, the dark clouds rolled in. The forecast gave a 20% chance of rain for the day so I wasn't too worried. I was expecting probable rain on Sunday afternoon. As we pushed on, all hell broke loose. The thunder and lightning came out of nowhere and the rain started. Very soon, the storm was directly above us and it was obvious is wasn't going to let up anytime soon.

We got our rain gear on and thought about our situation. Lily has no rain gear and was mostly miserable for all of this. Camping down in Dane Canyon during a monsoon storm didn't exactly sound like a great idea. We didn't have enough water to set up camp away from a good water source and I wasn't stoked on telling her we would actually have to extend it a couple miles to Dane Spring. We were both a bit uncomfortable with all the lightning and I could tell my friend was nervous about what the future might hold for us. We could be in for a really long evening stuck in the tents.

I threw out the option that we could go back to FR145, hike the road to the Barbershop Trail, and then over to my truck on FR139. That might mean a 15 mile day but that was our only bail-out option. Neither one of us wanted to be the one to call it but as we stood there a huge crack of thunder echoed down from directly above us and the choice was made

We got back to the road and the storm got worse. Then the hail started-- thunder, lightning, and the heaviest hail bombardment I've ever been in. Our rain gear was allowing us to tolerate it (kind of, at least) but poor Lily was getting it full force and freaking out. I grabbed her, got her behind a large tree, and we stood over her and blocked the hail until it stopped. As the temperature dropped a good 25 degrees in about 30 minutes, I realized I was glad we were bailing. It was going to be much colder at night then I had expected. I was not prepared for that. I had planned for mid-50's-- not whatever it was going to drop to.

The rain continued for a while and eventually stopped. We were cold and wet. Lily was very cold and wet. My friend was getting blisters and facing a much longer hike than she's ever done. We finally hit the Barbershop Trail and it was nice to be off the road for the final bit. Lily perked up and was happy to be running in the ferns again. My friend was definitely pushing her threshold and that last climb out of Barbershop was pretty miserable for her. She was done and in pain but very positive about it all.

We were both very glad to see my truck and head to THAT Brewery for a hot meal. On our way out of town it looked as though another storm might be coming through. We were very happy to be leaving. It was an adventurous day.

Got out of the heat for a nice trip up on the rim. Tons of water. Dane canyon was running over 95% of the time. Just a couple of very short sections where it went underground.

It was just a touch warm when in the sun during midday, but it was perfect in the shade. Nice breeze kicked up in the afternoon.

Thanks 9L for driving and boots for helping split that after-hike 12 pack. :)

The temps were getting outrageously hot in the valley so I got together with Chumley and Toughboots and the dogs for a hike up north. We left Phoenix on Saturday morning and made the drive to the rim. The ride took a while but was really enjoyable especially along FR 300.

We started hiking and made steady time as we we dropped into and out of Barbershop and Dane Canyons. We would follow the U-Bar trail and made a counter clockwise lasso loop as we returned via Dane Canyon. The going was very pleasant and the temps were hot at times but enjoyable.

Once back to the jeep we took our time as we prepared for the return to the valley heat. This was a real nice hike and a lot of fun with the group. The dogs are such a treat to hike with. They loved playing in all the water. Good times

Joined Kyle and Lee for nice hike on the Mogollon Rim. Dane Canyon and Barbershop Canyons were the objective. Kyle provided the invite and Lee provided the ride with Blanco as our wing dog. We headed down Dane Canyon to start the loop but part way down we left the canyon to check out Dane Cabin on the ridge above. Also a spring there that was running just enough to get decent water from. From there we picked up the U-Bar Trail and over to Barbershop Canyon.

Once in Barbershop we continued up canyon spooking several elk one of which had the largest rack I've ever seen. Unfortunately it ran away before we could deploy our cameras. We also found a very active area for elk carcasses and other unidentified animals..interesting to find such a large collection of bones in one area.

Eventually we made it up to Barbershop Trail and back to the vehicle for a post hike brew :) We just barely beat the rain with thunder rumbling as we headed out. Great to hike with Lee first time and Kyle again!

This was a good hike with Lee, Karl, and Blanco. I was going to bring Lily but the 40% chance of thunderstorms made me decide not to-- of course, it never ended up raining on us.

We parked on 145 where the Barbershop trail crosses and headed to Dane Canyon first. Its pretty easy going and scenic. Karl and Lee hadn't been to Dane Cabin before so once we got closer we decided to bushwack out of the canyon and head up to the U-Bar. We made it to the cabin and stopped for lunch.

We headed back down the U-bar, crossed Dane Canyon, and headed over to Barbershop Canyon. Barbershop has a lot more water and as we found out-- a lot more elk. As nice as the day was, I think we were all ready to be done and we finally finished. This was Lee's first Mogollon hike so I think he was especially tired after popping his rim cherry :D

The hike of the month in Arizona Highways is the Barbershop Trail. The pictures in that magazine are always gorgeous. But the trail didn't seem super appealing. Hike AZ helped make the trail more interesting, they had me at "off trail."
