Nice hike. Great wildflowers in the first 1/2 mile or so. The turn for the saddle is well before the marked route (500 ft?). We found a nice trail starting at a “waterfall” stone structure in the wash. Look for a cairn way hikers left. Nice arch and beautiful views from the saddle.

Had to move my weekend hike to Sunday, so I wanted to do something close to home. Andy came up with a plan to hit the Cyclops, Twin Arches, and the arch by Top Hat. We did the first 2 and by then it was getting close to lunch time so I was ready for a belly full of food and a power nap.

The Cyclops was interesting. I almost went up there 2 years ago when it was still the Mask, but it was August and super hot, so I wasn't up for it. The peak above it has some really nice views. On our way down we found the actual trail, which I didn't know even existed. it wasn't really a bad bushwhack on the way up, especially considering how overgrown things are now with all the recent rains.

We had trouble finding the trail to Twin Arches at first, and that's because there is no trail that makes it out to FR1356. Once you cross the deep wash, the trail becomes visible and is easier to follow the further you go up. I suppose that's just as well to keep the traffic down. The views up there were phenomenal. Looking out around and even the formations and lichens on the rocks up there are really nice. We got under the eastern arch, but I didn't like how the rocks at the top of it look really loose and like they could fall at any second. I stayed away while Andy tried to step up on the pile of rocks to look through it to the city below.

We tried to take the most direct route back but got off track on the horse trails. Just as well, added a a little extra mileage and that never hurts. the weather and scenery cooperated making it pleasant to spend a little extra time out there. I saved the arch on Top Hat for another day, plenty out there to explore still.

Cousin Jaelyn cut her South America trip short and ended up at her mom's house in San Tan Valley and texted me for a hike. I called Deborah who was also in town and I picked this hike that I took Jaelyn's sister on Dec 2021 [ photoset ] . Weather was perfect. The road walk was VERY noisy until making the turn on FR 10 to the north. From then on we only saw horseback riders.

As we came down the hill, to the NW I could see what looked like a stone wall. I had never noticed it before. It looks natural and there is a pullout below it. Even though I hiked us past the wash turn, misreading RS, we didn't get close enough to investigate. We headed back to the wash, took the obligatory picture by the tall chollas and continued to our first destination: Cyclops. Jaelyn took the lead and nailed the cairned route on the way up. We took our pictures and enjoyed the always beautiful view :) . We got to see a red-tailed hawk in flight as well. Jaelyn removed her first cholla from her shoe.

We headed back down and Jaelyn kept heading east while we went down the way we came up. We headed toward the bedrock area of the wash looking for reflections in the water but the horses had been through so the water was a little mucky in most of the little pools. It's still a little hard to follow the trail from time to time so sometimes, we probably hiked more through the wash. However, the sand was somewhat hardened in many areas so it wasn't bad. I do like staying above the wash for the views. And since this was Jaelyn's first time in this area (she's only done Picacho with me on this very same day 12 years ago [ photoset ] ), I wanted her to have a good visual.

I tried to point out the various peaks and we reviewed some of the flora. She's a bit of a gardener so likes to know about the desert; doesn't quite compare to Kona, but our desert was showing off with all its puffy chollas and various other plants including Jojobas and Foothill Palo Verdes not to mention the Saguaros that she couldn't get enough of; especially their interior when it was exposed. Deborah also likes the desert flora.

Keeping an eye out for the cairns is still a bit tricky. As we meandered along I noticed the horses went off to the south from the wash. After checking HAZel, I knew this wasn't the right way but we decided to be adventurous and follow where it would lead us as long as it kept going the way I needed it to. The horse people have been out trimming so we tossed the clippings off the trail which was quite narrow in this particular section. Well this is definitely NOT a main trail so eventually I needed to veer east, but first we had to get up on a hill so I could get a good visual.

We walked on the top and enjoyed our views. I found a good route down and we took that and with a little jig and jag via FR 1356 I got us on a rough road that would take us up another tall and long hill. Now I just had to hope we could hook up with Blue Ridge ridge area. Believe it or not, the road turned into a single track and was even heading in the right direction. So the only question remaining was whether or not we would have to go down to go up. I pointed out the views to Top Hat, the Four Peaks, Weavers and the Flatiron as we continued on our way. And wha la, we were able to merge to the next ridgeline that would take us on the Blue Ridge.

We got over to the main area where you can look toward the alcove below. The lichen was glowing per normal and is a sight to see if you're not used to seeing such masses of it. Walking around this volcanic tuff is pretty at every turn. It's a little different than volcanic tuff that Jaelyn has in Kona but at least she could somewhat feel at home  ; especially since Kihlauea is at it again. Now it was time to negotiate that slippery section coming down from the Blue Ridge. It's still slick but fortunately, short. I am still amazed that horses traverse that.

We finished off the hike by getting to see some deer grazing on the side of the hill so that was nice. It's a little tricky getting back to the TH once you're near the wash and though I apparently missed the trail, we made it to the road with no problem. I think some of these trails in here are hard to see because of the rain we've had.

We finished our day at Los Gringos where Jaelyn and I enjoyed a Grande Waborita with our food. (FYI, the poblano chicken enchiladas and poblano rice are so good).

We decided to take a second stab at the Mask arch and also hit the Blue Ridge for a 8 mile loop. All in all a pretty nice hike where we were able to avoid the roads for most of the hike until we hit the Blue Ridge section (I'll upload the GPS). There is suppose to be another arch in the Blue Ridge section, but I don't think it is visible from the trail, and we didn't wonder off the trail much to try to locate it.

Blue Ridge section is interesting, it's a shame you have the city view in this segment.

Actually this hike was intended to go up Hill 2685, but we created a balloon hike. Started from Idaho road, headed West then North towards the Mask then headed east until we hit Trail 308, then passed Hill 2685. Didn't see any trails going up the hill, so decided not to do it.

We were able to stay on trails for most of the hike except the south bound leg of the loop.

Skipped my usual weekend trail running haunts to do a little exploring in the Goldfields, off Idaho Road. 4-5 other cars parked at the TH when I arrived at 8:30 am.

I immediately got distracted by the caves and summit just east of the trailhead, which I climbed and scouted for good climbing/rappelling options. I was aware of Greaver’s Needle, but didn’t wander up that way.

The rest of the jaunt was just heading out to see what I could in the time allotted.

Temps were nice with the cloud cover. Lots of solitude to be had. Only came across 3 other people.

Working with a small time frame, I was looking for something short, but that I hadn’t done before. After some browsing I settled on the “Mask” from Idaho Rd. Never having hiked from this TH before I got there a little early. The parking for this TH utilizes a dirt lot at the end of Idaho Rd with enough room for 20 vehicles. Chilled in my car until 6:30 so that there would be enough light to see the trail. I was a little worried because I wasn’t able to upload the gps route onto my garmin so I was going in with a trail description and a visual image (in my mind) of the gps route and the surrounding topography. I needn’t have been worried. The route up until the end was easy to follow. Starting from the TH I followed the trail until it entered the second wash and then I turned north and followed the wash for maybe .5 miles. Really enjoyed this wash. There was one section where the walls became stone and they rose up and closed in around me. Neat! Otherwise, the banks were a mixture of dirt and rock and the wash was open with minimal rock or vegetation to encroach on the trail. The trails exit from the wash was obvious. From there the well defined trail did some minor climbing as it worked its way to a shelf. From here the views to the south were ok, though the Supes weren’t visible. As I started a gradual descent I spooked 5 javelina that scattered in 3 directions. All of them looked to be good size. It was comforting to reach the water shed and the road. Confirmation that I was on the right trail. It was also there where I saw a trail sign posted stating the name of trail as the “Deers Tank Trail.” :) I love getting a name to a trail. Crossing the road, I entered into a wash on the other side. This wash was larger than the first wash I had hiked, and about .15 miles in it split, going east-west. I knew from looking at the gps route that I needed to go east, which was fortunate because it caused me to do a little scrambling up some rock work. Very neat!! From here there are three prominences on the north side of the wash. The “mask” is nestled between the second and third. I couldn’t see the arch until I was a little past it, causing me to some backtracking. As I was looking for the arch I was very fortunate to see 2 big horn sheep working there way along the slopes to the south. :D It was a short (much shorter than I anticipated) and easy climb to get to the mask. Cairns were everywhere. Though the route did become more established the closer I got to the arch. Enjoyed the mask and the second prominence for a short time before heading back. On the way back I utilized a trail (I’m fairly certain it is the Deers Tank trail) that I had seen from the prominence. It is south of the wash that I used to access the mask and cuts up and over a saddle before hitting the road. I then needed to walk down the road a short ways to reconnect to the trail near the water shed. Having done that trail and the wash, I prefer the wash. On the way back I checked out one side trail. Basically, this got me into the initial wash quicker than if I had stayed on the defined trail. I had to negotiate some rocks and low hanging branches but I quickly rejoined the trail I had used on my entry. From here it was a very easy return to get back to the car,. Had the trail to myself until the very end when I met two solo hikers who were heading in. Beautiful day for a hike. It was windy which made it chilly at times. Wildlife was fantastic!!!

When I got back to the TH there were 5 vehicles parked there. One was a beautiful black SUV. Unfortunately, it had been irrevocably scarred with Pittsburg Steeler fanaticism. :(

Perfect hiking weather. Didn't see another person out in the Goldfields. Checked out the broken "Mask". Glad to have seen it in its glory days.

With the even higher than normal temperatures forecasted for today, I wanted to do a hike that was closer to home and get a jump on the earlier part of the day. I also wanted something that didn't have too much elevation gain. I decided on the southern end of the Bulldog Canyon Road, although that ended up having more elevation gain than I had intended. It still wasn't too bad.

I hiked to where I left off several years ago when I hiked the north half (and then some) of the road. On my way back, I noticed that the road was intersected by the track for Idaho Road to The Mask. I hiked to the north end of the wash, but decided not to hike up to The Mask. There was absolutely no sign of any trail, and the steep and sketchy looking terrain didn't look very inviting as the heat started to bear down. On my way back, I noticed a cairn on the side of the wash that marked a single track. I started to follow that for a bit and then saw a brown vinyl marker. I figured this would likely take me back to the road, which it did. It also went back into the wash a few times before it went up over a saddle to the road.

I had intended to try to hike the route back to the Idaho TH and hike the Wolverine Pass Trail over back towards where I parked. However, once back on the road, I was beyond where that intersection was, and was up a bit higher. I decided to take the road back the TH and call it a day. Looks like quite few other trails and ATV roads to explore out here.

I definitely did not make it to any mask, but this was the closest triplog to what we hiked. The trails on my side of town are a little too crowded for my comfort right now, so I headed over to Katie's side of town for a hike in the Goldfields. I was pleasantly surprised.

There was a pretty cool "slot" canyon portion and we took a break at a nice spot with an old fire ring and some rock furniture. We passed two young kids and a climber prepping for the Coyote when we returned to the trailhead.

Stay well and safe everyone.

I got invited to join Angela, Kelly, and hike with LosDosSloFolks (Greg & Cathy) for the first time in the Goldfields. Lots of nice scenery on this hike. Cool views of the mountains, cactus, and wild flowers. Good conversation along the way.

Blue ridge is very interesting, my first time up there. Spooked a great horned owl in search of an arch which turned out to be just an alcove. Inside the alcove we saw a grinding hole and kitty poop.

Perfect hiking weather. Thanks for having me along. Great to meet Greg and Cathy, see Angela again, and hang with Kelly. :)

Angela, aka tibber, which has recently changed to "The Tibbernator" :D invited us out to the Goldfields to see a natural arch formation known as "The Mask". One of the two arches comprising the mask has collapsed, so what we actually visited is now referred to as the "Cyclops". Loop shown in photoset.

Not three minutes after arrival at the Idaho Trailhead Johnlp pulled in next to us followed immediately by Kelly (trekking_gecko). We had never met either of these two HAZ regulars prior to this but recognized both of them from their logs we've been reading over the past year. Had no idea they were joining us because why would two ultra strong hikers want to do a measly 7 mile loop with a couple of people 15 months off the sofa? Possibly because tibber didn't want to endure the slow torture alone. :-k

All the others had hiked these trails before on numerous occasions but all day long we kept hearing "Oh...I don't remember seeing that before" or "look how pretty this view is". Hiking with the SloFolks has it's advantages. When we slow you down from a 3.50 mph pace to a sub 2.25mph pace you get to re-experience why we all do this in the first place.

Won't go into a lot of details about the hike as most members have been out here and the photos tell a better story than I can anyway. During the climb up we saw two hikers far below in the wash and exchanged waves. As we were leaving the Cyclops and were starting the descent the two hikers showed up at the top. One fellow was from Wyoming and the other from Canada. They both said "eh" a lot. Angela is from northern Montana originally so they chatted for a while on common knowledge.

John and Kelly had energy to burn so near the end of the loop they headed up a side canyon to investigate a possible arch/cave/alcove we had seen from above. From our vantage point we saw them cause a good sized Great Horned Owl to take flight from his daytime sleep. He flew at Mach 1 for several hundred yards to find a new bed. Kelly has a great photo of the displaced avian in her photoset. :) They didn't find another arch but did find a grinding hole in the alcove used by the Hohokam to get out of the sun.

It was really nice to meet Kelly and John. Very nice people as we thought they would be. Thanks to both of you for the good company and your patience on the trail! Afterwards we enjoyed a nice lunch with Angela at "Los Gringos" restaurant...and thanks again for the invite. :D

angela invited me to hike a loop in the goldfields with losdosslofolks
sounded fun; hadn't been out there in months, and always nice to meet some new haz members
john decided to come along, too
met up around 0830 and did the loop clockwise
didn't remember much about the route to the mask
john and i might have taken a different one when we did it
as others have mentioned, the side of the arch that had the cactus growing through it has collapsed
still a nice window on the other half
spent some time taking photos, then headed east
nice views of 3269, dome mountain and 3134 along the way
took a break somewhere in there
checked out the various rock formations on blue ridge
john and i tried to find what looked like an arch from above - actually a large alcove
startled an owl in the drainage, and found a grinding hole
worth checking out
finished up and had tibber's beers and root beers at the vehicles
weather was perfect
enjoyed meeting and hiking with greg and cathy, and getting out with angela again (you too, lp)
thanks for including me :)
nice to be out in the goldfields again

Sadly, the mask is now a wink—when did this happen?

Lovely day afield - early out and back. This weather is a fleece start and a flip flop finish. Saw a trail runner, horseback riders, an eight-truck 4x4 caravan and rock climbers. All of us doing our thing without interfering with each other’s engagement. Very happy for the last few days of sunshine. Hike was an out and back to the mask, hmmmm..... “wink”

Mileage is round trip estimate.
