Sunset hike after work from end of Phoenix Street trailhead. First time on this trail. On Cypress for a bit, then off trail to a boulder outcropping summit, then Boulders North Trail, and then off trail bushwhack up to Boulders South Trail at dusk. Hiked back on Boulders South in the dark. Mexican food dinner afterward before making my way north to Mormon Lake. Nice to see such a great network of trails in the PATS system. They were just starting to build these when I lived in Payson almost 20 years ago.

Met up with Bruce to do an 8 miler in Payson. I was not familiar with the trails in this area. Reminded me of the Dells in the Prescott area without the lake. More trees here though. Nice trails although the Boulder trail section had some sand/granite that made that section a little more work.
Nice outing and nice to get in a hike with Bruce!
Thanks for driving, Bruce. Like HAZ, you rock!

The turtle and I got started at the crack of 10 AM, with comfortable temperatures. There were six or more cars at the trailhead, which we later found out were escapees from a 55+ community.

It's a beautiful area back here, filled with large boulder formations. The actual trails intertwine with several user-created trails, so having a map of the area comes in handy. We did get off track a few times, once because someone had obscured the trail intersection. It was at this point where we encountered the escapees again. Denny tried to blend in with them, but to no avail.

Off we went, leading the way, and we never saw them again. I really enjoyed this hike and will probably explore a variation of this trail again.

It was great catching up with the turtle.

after driving up to payson we decided to do a little hiking before checking into our rental for the week. Did some hodge podge loop using these trails lol. Nice area and trails, easy access. Very pleasant!

Tried out a new area for me.

Cool to start, perfect temps to finish

Cypress Trail is a smooth wide trail with some nice views

The Boulders Loop Trail is made up of Boulders South and Boulders North. These were my two favorites for the day. Great views and tread. This loop would be good for out of town AEG challenged midwestern flatlanders. There are a few steep sections to let them know they are no longer in Kansas.

The Monument Peak Loop is a one and done for me. It looks like the majority of it's traffic comes from motorized traffic. The north side of Monument Peak has some redeeming qualities. It looks pretty nice hiking next to the small Creek.

It'd be best to hit anyone of these trails on a weekday. They appear to be popular and may be be busy on the weekend

This was Plan B, I was going to do Payson to Round Valley Loop, but was unsure about having to cross private property, didn't see any trail markers as expected. To be fair, I gave up looking pretty quickly.

Started from the Phoenix St. trailhead, and went out Cypress East to Boulders Loop. On the return, did the North part of Cypress as an out and back.

Not a bad trail for being on the outskirts of a city. Some nice views along the way. Lots and lots of Deer along North Cypress

Originally wanted to follow Stewart Creek down to its confluence with Houston Creek but along the way I crossed maybe 50 yards of private property and what happened next was quite surprising!

Two rounds worth of warning shots and a few more were fired until I finally got back to the trail, it wasn't somebody doing target practice but definitely a worker on the ranch sending a message.
According to my work colleague who is a local legend around here refers to longtime Payson residents as "local yocals" and tells me it's a fox farm down there and the ranch owner owns some serious acres expanding from Houston Creek all the way near "The Boulders Loop TH" which is now gated off and can only be accessed by foot or bicycle.

I just climbed around on some boulders instead, enjoyed a well needed brew and hiked back in a comforting sprinkling rain.

Did a triple loop in the Payson trail system. We went in search of 60F temps  and found them: 60 at the start, 70 at the end! Not many people in the first 10 miles, saw 5 people and 5 squirrels :) We saw quite a few people the last couple of miles. Stewart Creek had a nice steady flow.

The wife and I took our kids and our niece up north for some adventuring. Horton was our original destination but due to snow ice and some sketchy crossings we decided to abandon that plan and try for something else. We thought we found a hike called phoenix street loop but the directions sent us somewhere else. There was a trailhead and I had my haztracks so we gave it a shot. We ended up on the cypress trail and part of the boulders loop. We were looking for a loop so we ended up going a little farther than we planned and my topo wouldn't come up. Im not to good with the whole GPS thing yet. The trail was very nice and relatively flat. This was the longest hike my wife and kids have done so far and they did great!! So happy to have them out hiking with me :y: :y: :y: :y:

This was a mostly off-trail exploration into Stewart Pocket that ended up being a loop. I started from the end of Phoenix St and slowly wandered up the side of Stewart Ridge where I found a nice spot to assess the terrain and eat a little breakfast. Felt a little sluggish for the first couple of miles, almost like I wasn't fully awake yet. Headed back down and onto Cypress briefly before turning north and following a drainage wash to Hill 5085. Climbed Hill 5085 and it's two adjoining hills. Climbed down and traveled Northeast over to Monument Peak where I summited from the Southeast side by following game trails (theme of the day). Found some pottery pieces and took a few photos before heading down the ridgeline. Hopped back on Monument Peak Trail once back at the bottom and then walked the dirt road to Yerba Senta Butte. To my surprise there was an actual trail to the top of the butte, as well as a summit shelter on top. I took this unnamed trail back down to Cypress where I finished out the loop. Water was hit or miss. Some creeks where lightly flowing while others where bone dry. Skies where clear and sunny so views of the Rim were good. Although the weather was perfect, I didn't see another human all day.

First time on the PATS. I'd been reluctant to check this trail system out, but the suggestion of a neighbor swayed me so I looked up a couple of loops in the area. This was the first of two on the day. This hike was mostly off trail and up dry creek beds and washes with the first and last miles on actual trail. Some spots have the feel of seclusion and then around the next bend is an old sofa and a TV full of bullet holes. Pleasantly surprised to not encounter a rattler on such a warm day and in what seemed like ideal rattler territory. At one point I did spook a pair of owls who took off right above my head and swooped into higher trees. This was a cool little hike to get me started but I had my eyes on the ridgeline looming over me and headed for Gibson Peak next.

We did 3 loops in the Stewart Pocket area (Stewart Pocket loop South, Cypress :next: Boulders loop and Monument Peak loop).
Not many folk around we only saw 2 dirt bikes and 2 small ATVs.

It doesn't have a remote feel being so close to Payson but this area is really nice with lots of red rock, boulders and formations.

We did two loops:
Gibson connector :next: Stewart Pocket loop South and then Cypress :next: Boulders loop. We got rained on for about 10 minutes.
