Dese's Bday month hike, which is likely the longest of her nine year life so far. It's also the first time she's summited two in a day! Boulder Canyon is a series of hundreds of clear swimming pools currently. The crossings were still manageable without getting wet, but there's evidence it had flashed significantly. This seems to have made the route easier to follow, in addition to all the trail work that's been completed recently. It's greatly appreciated! :app:

To close out the year I decided to head to the Supes and do the Black Mesa Loop with a side trip up to Yellow Peak.

We did the loop CCW. I enjoyed the Dutchman Trail today: there was some water in some sections of the trail, and we had to do a bit of rock hopping on a couple of creek crossings. The Black Mesa Trail was a bit damp, but wasn't really muddy. The Second Water Trail was dry for the most part. It was a nice off-trail hike up to Yellow Peak -- the views are really nice up there.

This was a near perfect hiking day: cloudy, not windy, with comfortably cool temperatures. It was the kind of day that I like to do a long hike on.

There weren't many people out there today, which was surprising to me for a holiday weekend. Not that I am complaining!

Happy New Year everybody!

I have been wanting to try this hike for a while, and today turned out to be the day to do it. I got the idea for this from a hike that @azhiker456 did last fall.

This was basically the Black Mesa Loop with sidetrips to four peaks along the way:
1) Hackberry Mesa
2) Black Mesa 2850
3) Peak 3097
4) Yellow Peak

From the First Water TH, I went to the horse lot, and then took the Hackberry Spring Trail. Once I got close to Hackberry Mesa, I went off-trail up the SW side of the mesa. It was a bit steep in places, but not bad. I enjoyed the views on the mesa, and then descended SE at first and then more south to go through Garden Valley down to the Second Water Trail My descent was easier than the ascent.

Once on the Second Water Trail, I went to the Black Mesa Trail, and took it up to Black Mesa 2850. This is the highest point on topo maps of Black Mesa, but it looks to me like the highpoint of the mesa is on the west side.

I then descended from Black Mesa, and went up to Peak 3097. It was a gentle grade up to Peak 3097, but there was knee high grass (or higher in some places) with ankle busting rocks underneath, so the going was fairly slow. Views were nice atop Peak 3097, and I had a lunch break there.

I descended back to the Black Mesa Trail and then busted up the south slopes of Yellow Peak. This was the most challenging of the four peaks, but it was a fun climb up. I enjoyed the views at the summit, and then went back down to the Black Mesa Trail. From there, I made my way to the Dutchman Trail, which I took back to the First Water TH.

I enjoyed hiking to these peaks -- Black Mesa was my least favorite, and it would be hard to say which of the other 3 that I liked the best.

The hike back on the Dutchman Trail was a bit of a death march, and was my least favorite part of the hike.

A quick hike before it heats up. I wanted something close that I could get done early. Yellow Peak is a fun scramble that's usually overlooked. There were at least 15 vehicles at the trailhead at 6:30am. I think most were campers as I hiked Second Water and Black Mesa trail with passing another hiker. I was on top of Yellow Peak just after 8am. There was a new summit register so I signed in. I took a side route down but didn't find anything new. Made my out on the Dutchman trail while other hikers and horse riders were coming in. A good day to be out on the trail.

We'd planned to hike up north this weekend, but with the rare gift of a late-May day with highs in the low/mid-80s around Phoenix, we changed plans and headed for the Superstitions. First Water Trailhead was surprisingly empty when we arrived...maybe a lot of people have already given up on hiking in the Superstitions until the fall. While we were getting ready to start, someone flew overhead on a powered paraglider, which I didn't expect. Our first destination was Yellow Peak, and we took Second Water to Black Mesa Trail, pausing briefly to look at the pot sherds along the way. It was sad to see all the fire damage along the route, but the saguaro blooms were incredible--flowers everywhere, and just about every saguaro arm we passed looked like it was wearing a crown of yellow and white.

We exited Black Mesa Trail and started up the southwest side of Yellow Peak. I didn't do enough reading to know if that was the best route...I'm assuming we could have found something easier if we'd spent more time looking, but it wasn't a bad climb despite a lot of talus near the summit, and the brush wasn't too thick. I came up over the ridge right next to the large cairn marking the summit. Based on recent triplogs, I wasn't sure if there would be a register up there, but someone named D.W. Cameron had placed a new ammo box and register on April 26 and increased the size of the summit cairn.

He'd done a nice job--he left a note with the old summit register, which he'd found and recovered earlier in April in a plastic jar with a hole in the lid. The old register had a lot of water damage but was still readable--lot's of familiar HAZ names in there from the past nine years. We had the honor of being the first to sign the new register after D.W. The 360° views from the top of Yellow Peak were fantastic--Battleship, La Barge, Geronimo Head, Four Peaks, Malapais, Weaver's Needle, 5057, Black Mesa, and much more...it's a great vantagepoint.

[ youtube video ]

We wanted to do some exploring on the north side of Yellow Peak, so we headed in that direction as we left the summit but ended up dropping down to the wash more on the northwest side of the peak to avoid crossing more talus. We spent some time exploring at the north side but didn't turn up anything particularly noteworthy, so we followed the wash back along the west side of Yellow Peak and reconnected with Black Mesa Trail, then hiked back to the Second Water intersection and continued on Hackberry Spring Trail.

We detoured off the trail to visit the arch and did a little more exploring in that area before circling back to the main trail. I hadn't hiked along Hackberry before and was pleasantly surprised--the area around the spring with the towering canyon walls and the greenery is beautiful. Hackberry Spring was barely dripping, and the pool at the base of the wall was full of algae, the pipe just seeping a hint of moisture.

We continued through the canyon and passed an old corral as we looped back onto the road to First Water Trailhead. There were still very few vehicles in the lot for such a nice day. We felt very lucky to have weather like this in late May, and it was an especially nice time to be out there with the blooming flowers. It could be a while before we have another day like this in the Superstitions...

Another peak knocked off, really liked this one! No trail off of Black Mesa but straight forward to the top. First ones to sign the trip long since March of this year. Also wanted to try out the Garden Valley Loop to see HackBerry Spring, since we have not been on those. Was a little warm towards the end but great to see the water in the desert!

Black Mesa Trail is destroyed from recent rains that made it all the more of an adventure!

Need to catch up on my HikeAZ logs from the past months but ready to get back into the swing of adventures out here.

Arrived at First Water Trail Head to quite a few people milling around the parking lot , I inquired as to what the senior discount was today but didn’t get a response, apparently today’s popular hike was Hackberry Loop . Hustled up and thought I was ahead of the hordes but just after crossing First Water Creek there was already a battalion to pass and just before Garden Valley a platoon of ladies , after that only one backpacker leaving Boulder Basin . Couldn’t locate a register on Yellow Peak, took a couple of pictures and proceeded on. Explored a bit of Little Boulder Creek /Canyon and eastern slope Palomino Mountain, flowing water in Little Boulder Creek and West Boulder Creek at the Dutchman crossing. After Parker Pass smooth sailing to the trailhead.Disappointed no wildlife spotted.

Yellow Peak has been on Kelly's list and I hadn't done it either so we had plan. I had never done Hackberry, so we combined the two for an interesting hike.

Weather was perfect. Partially cloudy with a strong breeze that kept us cool.

Nice to hike somewhere new. Plenty of water still out there. Flowers are gaining momentum.

Excellent hike. Thanks Kelly! :)

yellow peak has been on my radar for awhile, especially since so many haz members have been up there recently
john kindly agreed to go with me
got started early before those pesky groups of 15 showed up ;)
second water trail to black mesa trail
found the take off point from the creek using wally's track
several have gone up this way from the southwest, so we just picked the best line and went up
not bad ascending, but can't say as i enjoyed going down the black rock section - too many moving rocks
nice grassy summit area with stellar views of weaver's needle, palomino, black top mesa, battleship, geronimo, malapais and the entire ridgeline
wandered around a bit, signed the entertaining summit register and discussed our route down
john had never been on black mesa trail and wanted to do the hackberry spring loop
we decided to go back to garden valley the way we came
after dropping of yellow peak, took a snack break of the blood oranges john brought and some cashew clusters :)
from garden valley, explored the rock base with the grinding holes and alcove that jack showed me
went around to the arch and climbed up into it
pure luck that i found these things again
backtracked to the trail and went down to first water creek
lots of water flowing, much more that our trip there in november
checked out the spring, then took our time through the scenic narrow section
looked around the ranch, then up and out, back on the road
nice combo, and glad to have been on the summit of yellow peak
weather was perfect, with cool temps, a decent breeze and somewhat overcast skies at times
saw quite a few people once back on the main trails
thanks for the hike, john - another good one

I had unfinished business on BTM (missed the 'glyphs the first time around) and missed an opportunity to hike Yellow Peak with Bruce, Joe and Father Dave a few weeks back. I didn't have a plan for today, so I thought I would scratch these off my to do list.

Black top mesa is fun. I explored much more of it today than I did on my only previous trip. Once on top I headed towards the west edge and then headed north, following the perimeter of the mesa. Nice views all the way around. It is lush on top, green in spots, but watch for the ankle busting rocks hidden in the grass. Checked out the glyphs on the southeast end, then headed down.

Yellow Peak was next on my list. I went up on the west side where the Black Mesa trail veers left away from the creek. Very steep. I was rewarded with a patch of Mexican Poppies about half way up. Located and signed the summit register on the sound end. Meandered around up top for a bit, but didn't see anything exciting so I departed down the north slope towards the creek below. I took a right at the creek (should have gone left) and climbed out about a quarter mile later at the twisted saguaro in my photo set.

From here it was cross country following game trails and bushwhacking my way towards Garden Valley. Going right at the creek was a mistake. I ended up traversing a couple of steeper ravines that might have been easier (or avoided altogether) if I had gone left at the creek and climbed out where the creek turns south. But then I would have missed the jumping cholla that attached my left elbow. 10 minutes later, I got the last of the quills out and headed out again. I also would have missed my first Javelina encounter. Going down the second ravine, I passed what must have been a Javelina den on my right. I heard some rustling that I mistook for birds. I heard it again and then something moved quickly in front of me towards the route I was planning to take. It stopped in front of me, maybe 25 feet away. It was a large javelina :o. I saw the hackles on its back rise and fall. More rustling to my right :o :o. I froze, eyeballing the area around me for large rocks, thinking I might need one. The javelina in front of me took off, maybe a diversion to keep me away from the den. The only way forward was to follow it. I did. Luckily for me, I didn't see or hear it again. I continued down the ravine, crossed the wash and headed up the other side. Whew! That was a little too exciting!

The rest of the trip was uneventful. I reached Garden Valley and headed back on 2nd Water. Nice hike on a gorgeous day.

Claire and I met up for an afternoon hike in the Supes. We hit the nearly full parking lot at First Water Trailhead around noon and made a clockwise loop with a relatively quick stop on Yellow Peak. Yellow Peak is a lot of fun and offers great views of Battleship and Boulder Canyon. I was up here last year and didn't find the register. This time we found it on the south side of the peak. There are a handful of entertaining HAZ entries ;)

After our break on the summit we hiked back down and completed our loop via the Dutchman Trail and returned to the trailhead a little after 5pm. Nice day in the Supes!

we hiked this hike ~
Weather was kind of hot.
Yellow Peak is neat. Looking up at the peak from below I found a line that I wanted to climb that didn't seem as direct as the way 9L had gone previously. We started up towars the southern end of the peak, where the incline is more gradual. Towards the top there is a little fun bouldering.
We toped out and enjoyed the view with summit beers.
We found the summit register before leaving. Too bad that there was no more Norwegian chocolate to be found.

Combined Yellow Peak with the Boulder Canyon Loop for a nice day on the trails. The views from Yellow Peak in the morning were fantastic. We climbed up from the south and descended into the canyon to the north. I enjoyed the climb up more than the decent down which seemed steeper at least the route we took. Had lunch at the entrance of Needle Canyon where there were some nice pools of water and chatted about next weeks planned hike. We thought about going through Needle Canyon, connecting with Bull Pass, but opted to to continue with the BC loop. Started out cool at the 7 AM start, but warmed up nicely.

After deciding that I had to finally get out and do some real exercise again, I opted against a 5am departure and 20 mile day and went instead with a more moderate adventure. I knew there would be plenty of haz people out there, and was surprised to learn we were on the heels of dw and his son.

I had the binoculars out and saw plenty of people on Battleship, but wasn't able to identify them from the distance. On our way back we took a more direct route and were surprised by the relative ease despite it looking like it would be a real forest of prickly.

We ran into tough_boots on the way out and bribed him for a ride back to horse lot where we were forced to park due to our late start.

I was disappointed that BrunoP didn't join us on this one, mostly because I enjoy his triplogs, though to be honest the most recent ones have lost a bit of their wit and creativity (not sure why :-k ) so it's probably just as well. ;)

After a late lunch at AZW, I headed home and got all decked out for prom. : king :

We hit Battleship. Chilly on route into LaBarge, Bruce swore it was colder with each step. Waved the flag on top for ten minutes, snacked and moved on. Met Skillpore and the dynamic Denny Wally duo just before the descent into Boulder Creek. Ray is true to his school and especially his girl. After battling the ship he sailed solo back to the marina.

The balance of the group worked through Boulder to Black Mesa. This route gets old quick. Luckily the only thing to complain about on this beautiful day. Along the way we passed a number of groups. Seniors outnumbered the pipsqueaks for the most part. Everyone encountered was friendly, smiling and pleasant on the chat exchange.

Bruce and I worked the padre over and over in search of hidden sins. The force is strong in this one. Apparently he's studied and applied Olsteen theories to a tee.

Onwards to Yellow Peak. Bruce explored the canyon while Dave and I hit the peak. I only jumped on this hike for the company. Battleship is cool but a yawner compared to Geronimo above. Boulder ranks low on my enjoyable list. The views are world class. It's just more of a thing I enjoyed getting into hiking and figure I'll appreciate more twenty years from now.

Heading up to Yellow Peak a "why in the world is this necessary" mindset changed in a hurry. Those world class views all around had a nice new perspective. The peak was much larger on top than anticipated. The dark jumbled boulders in contrast to the waving grass was sweet. We followed NW following a ridge out and down to meet Bruce. That creek was pretty cool too.

Great to see all out on this fab day in the soups!

After 6-7 years, was good to stand on the battleship again. A bonus was to bag Yellow Peak while out there. Started out about 6:45am, enjoyed some nice, brisk, but not too-cold weather as we crossed over the ridge and back down into the Supes off of Boulder Canyon Trail, with sights set on the ship. Years ago, I remembered the throat of the ship being a lot scarier than it was this time. Last time I had seen the graffiti (see photo) but not the slice of pie, that was a pretty cool sight. We all dared each other to jump, but no one was crazy enough to actually do it. Reaching the top, we heard another group of HAZers making their way to the ship. After hanging out at the top a little while, we headed south toward the descent and ran into the team there (skillpore, Tortoise Hiker & wallyfrack).

After hanging out with them a while we said by to Ray, and Joe and Bruce and I headed for a loop around Yellow Peak. When we reached our climbing spot, Bruce went on, opting to hike around and check out a cave while we went for the peak. The Yellow Peak scramble was pretty quick and easy, not too much brush to show us down. Once we got to the top, I was surprised to see a peak register canister. It (appropriately) had a yellow lid. I opened it up and to my surprise, there was some really nice Norwegian chocolate in there. I said "Joe! There's chocolate in here, let's eat it!" Joe's response, "ahh, that stuff's probably been there forever and pretty gross." Actually no, it had been left just moments earlier that day, thanks to chumley & BobP. (Sorry we didn't catch up to you both, but thanks for the choco surprise!!) Not wasting a lot of time, we headed north across the top of Yellow Peak and down the north side, to meet up with Bruce and hike out. Lots of beautiful views down on our way back to Second Water junction, including one peak that looked like the mountain the Grinch lived on in the Christmas flick.

I stuck with Bruce & Joe until we finished the major part of the climb up and out, then said my goodbyes and sprinted back to the marina so that I could get back home to work.

Thanks Bruce & Joe for the invite and great company! Great hanging a little bit with you again, also, Ray!

Two days later, I'm just realizing I should have worn my bumble bob shirt. Oh well my half socks were sort of greenish yellow and no Dave they didn't have the little balls attached that you like.

Life haz been very good to me and not working Fridays for the last 20 years opens up lots of options and opportunity. The last two Fridays, I skied all day and was able to spend time with my daughter when she got off of work. But they were long days, starting at 5am and getting home after 8pm after pushing my legs to their limits.... takes its toll.

Anyways, I decided it would be prudent to sleep in  and just do Yellow Peak. Not that I was invited on the Canyon Lake trip :stop: and I figured Denny wasn't really gonna show up in the other group [-( . Because of BrunoP, I didn't get the extra sleep but I was able to take my time instead of rushing like usual and forgetting stuff. BrunoP could have done this but the cactus minefield up top near Black Mesa probably would have been too much. He doesn't really watch where he's going most of the time.

Free Bird was the theme of my favorite prom. Not sure why I added that.

After the hike, my son and I didn't get to see American Sniper but ended up seeing that movie about generation Bruce. Unbroken is a timeless tale of survival.

Yellow Peak has been on my radar since I did Black Top Mesa last year. With a cool breeze in the air today was the day. The hike up from Black Mesa Trail is challenging, but just short enough to not be overwhelming. The summit register was a plastic peanut butter jar with a small notebook. Only a few names were in there; one of which was Tortoise Hiker's from sometime last year. I dropped back down the way I came and then decided to complete the Black Mesa Loop. Lots of hikers were out enoying themselves today.

After finding the petroglyphs two weeks ago I knew I would return and look for more stuff. This trip I hiked in from the Dutchman trail and did some off trail exploring. I took the ridge to the summit of Yellow Peak. The area on top is really nice and larger than it appears from below. I hiked down to the north checked out the cliff bands on the way up to Second Water Canyon. My exit route was west across Black Mesa then back to the trail and out the Dutchman trail. The humidity was high today so while the temperature wasn't that high it was a hot stroll out.

I had planned on going up Yellow peak but was expecting some clouds so I just went around it and explored a little. I unexpectedly found some petroglyphs on rock by the wash near a deep pool. At first I walked past them but noticed a grind hole in the rock by the wash. I hiked back to an area with a hole under some boulders and noticed the petroglyphs. This was unexpected on the north side of Yellow Peak. I need to return on a cooler day and see if there is more.
