So the mileage is just a guesstimate on my part. Parked at the Dreamy Draw around 4;30. Surprised to see about 15 cars in the lot when I got there. More times than not this summer I've been hiking sans human contact. As it turned out, as soon as I went through the tunnel that goes under the 51 I only saw one other hiker and that was at a distance. Anyway, the purpose of this hike was to do the southwestern portion of the Stoney Mtn Ridgeline. I haven't done this section in a couple of years, but this is actually one of my favorite hikes in the Dreamy Draw area. The surrounding vista isn't that remarkable, because you are pretty much surrounded by homes, but the geology (rock formations) is remarkable and the trail is fun and challenging.
To do this hike, I went through the tunnel and then hung a left (west) at the trail marker that occurs shortly after the tunnel. After climbing the small hill you'll look upon a valley and to the west of the valley you see the southwest end of the Stoney Mtn Ridgeline. There are several trails that lead to these mountains so you have options on how you proceed. For me, as soon as I descended from hill (and entered the valley) I turned left and headed towards a large cairn. This took me along a flat stretch with some cool rock art that someone painstakingly created with Quartz rock (turtle, scorpions, snake, bird and a couple of other animals). I crossed a wash and then swung north skirting some hills and then west to climb up to a saddle. Descending a few feet down the other side of the saddle brings you to a clear cut trail that will bring you to the top of the peak. There are three peaks you can hit - decreasing in elevation as they go west. I hit the two tallest and then followed a trail down from the east side of the tallest peak. Once you get back into the valley there are several trails you can chose from to get back to the Dreamy Draw. |
