It’s been almost 9 years since I last visited this section of the Stoney Ridgeline, which is a shame because this is a fun area to hike in.

Got to the Dreamy Draw TH around 5am with plenty of light to start the hike. I was focusing on the SW portion of the Stoney Mtn Ridgeline which is often neglected by those doing this trail. Honestly, I’ve never done the entire ridgeline in one hike, choosing either to the north section or the SW section. The north section is a bit more rugged with fainter trails. On the south side the ridge trail, though rugged, is much better defined with a slew of trails feeding off it. I hiked out on the Christiansen and took the first use trail that headed west. It’s been awhile so I wanted to re-explore this area. Started off by following the flat trail that stayed between the 51 and the foothills to the north. This brought me to the homes and apartments adjacent to Northern. There was a sign there saying “Entering Phoenix Preserve” and “Stay on designated trails.” I thought that was kind of ironic since I’m pretty sure there are no signed designated trails in the area. Though there are plenty of obvious use trails. Speaking of which, I followed 1 of 2 use trails that went in to the foothills. Several intersections later I was at the base of the SW Stoney Mtn Ridgeline. At the base, there were options. I decided to go up the east trail and hit the tallest peak first. Disappointed. It was only 900 ft to reach the top. It felt like more. Took some pictures and enjoyed the views. Noticed quite a few trails (at the bottom) on the NW side of ridge.

I then continued west and hit the next two lower peaks. The trail was easy to follow and not as bad as you might think going along the ridge. The lowest of the peaks was a little bit of a scramble to get to the top. It’s a little over .5 miles to do this section of the ridge. Descended down the west side and connected to a use trail that went north-south. I took the south option and went along the base of the mountains. Heading back towards the Christiansen there were quite a few trails that splintered off, but I hung to the NW which brought me to trail that went along the fence to one of the mansions on the hill. Once back on the Christiansen, I took that back to the TH.

Nice hike. A lot of use trails to enjoy. Temps were great to start the day. Enjoy them while you can. I followed one trail runner going up the tall peak. Hats off to the guy. Not sure where he went. I didn’t see any other trails feeding off of that trail, but he wasn’t at the top when I got there. I did encounter 1 other hiker at the top and saw a handful of hikers on the trails around me. Not much wildlife except for a few rabbits.

Monday hike with Christina. I've been wanting to hike the ridgeline since I first hiked out here in September of 2015! It's never too late and today is the DAY! Woo hoo! Perfect temps. Holiday lite traffic. Plenty of parking at Dreamy Draw when I arrived. So nice. There was a group of like 20 unicyclists prepping to head out on the trails. I chatted for a bit with the guy parked aside of me who was visiting from California. He said this group gets together this time every year in AZ. They hit South Mountain, Sedona, and PMP today. Christina and I headed out through the tunnel on traill 100 under the AZ51 which had a big muddy spot right in the middle, eww. Did the Mercury Mine Loop counter clockwise. And broke off northbound to the Fenceline trail. Followed that and turned pretty much straight up the mountain, a little sketchy at spots. I was getting worried about what the trail back down looked like as we approached the summit. To my surprise, there was another hiker coming up that way, that's a good sign for sure! Chatted with him for a bit until we went our separate ways. Continued on the ridgeline trail to the southwest. Spectacular! Followed the trail along the base of the mountain back to trail 100 and the tunnel back to Dream Draw. What a great President's Day!

i was going to do the ridgeline hike. i started from the south end rather than the north just to be a contrarian, i guess. when i started off i noticed there were blue spray painted dots to mark the route, so i was calling it the blue dot trail. those blue dots were gone by the time i got to the high point. also, there were LOTS of other routes. if you see someone on the trail, chances are, you got off the ridgeline. also, if at any point it seems easy, you're on the wrong trail.

the description says there's some exposure. i've done plenty of hikes with exposure, but this was extreme. i was pretty scared up there and made my way down off the ridge as soon as i could see the trails down to trail 100, which i took back to meet the ridgeline trail near the northern terminus, where i had my husband pick me up. i don't intend to do this hike ever again. pros: absolutely no one on the "trail," amazing views. cons: super steep dropoffs in every direction at the high point (stoney mountain). :scared:

Beautiful day for a strenuous hike along a ridgeline I have wanted to do. Lots of ups and downs and craggy rock to climb over. Surprisingly, I saw 3 people and a dog up there and many walking Trail 100. Must be the holidays and people still visiting. Plus, Dreamy Draw is still closed. Lots of fun!

Decided to take it easy this weekend by hiking something tame close to home. I love stoney mountain and want to hike the entire ridge someday. This is the extreme SW portion of it in a previously unexplored part of the Preserve for me. Lots of pretty scenery and no crowds or noise once you get away from Dreamy Draw and the freeway. Very fun!

Thought it was a good idea to do a Squaw Peak gauntlet on a Saturday at 9AM.. It was not a good idea.. Only one round of looking for a parking spot and I left. I used to live right by Echo/Stony Mnt and always liked the solitude over there better anyway. Went up the ridge on Echo to the top and then down between the houses over to #100. From here I went north around Stony Mnt and thats when I got the idea of doing the whole ridgeline. Ascended at the north most point of Stony. After doing the Supe ridgeline a few weeks ago, this ridgeline is much more rugged and narrow. Also, the rocks up there were super sharp and thin. One slip and there will be blood. Not much of a path at all up there but was easy to follow the ridge all the way down. To my surprise there was another guy up there who was clearly lost and asked if he should keep going down the ridge to get down. I advised him to just go back the way he came. As I got closer to the highest peak, there were some very clear trails coming up to the area from the east. The top of Stony was a lot bigger that I thought it would be. Went down between the houses again and then back up on Echo to finish up the last stretch of the ridgeline. Kinda did a figure 8 with the whole thing. Route Scout keeps stopping my track and then it catches up with a straight line, so not sure whats going on. Beautiful freakin day.

After work hike. It's been years since I've done this hike so I thought it was time to revisit. Started from the QT off of Cactus and made my way to the water tank. Quite a few user trails once I entered the preserve so I had a few options to get there. I hit the tallest peak just east of the water tank - a fun scramble in itself. Had to backtrack a little to return to the saddle and then make my way over to the ridgeline. The track going up the north side of the ridgeline was fainter than I expected - still evident, but it obviously doesn't get as much usage as I expected. Once I made it to the top of the ridge I chose the path of least resistance; sometimes holding to the spine and sometimes dropping down to one side or the other. There were at times worn tread that indicated others had opted for my path along that area, but there was no obvious trail along the top. That is, until I got to Stoney Mountain - the high point along the ridge. Once I started my ascent on Stoney there was a spider web of options to get to the top. Once I hit the top, I turned around and took a very clear cut trail down to the Christiansen. I remember this trail from years ago and it evident that it is popular among the locals. From the Christiansen I used a couple of user trails to get back to my starting point. Fun scramble. Saw a squirrel, 5 hikers, 3 trail runners and 3 bikers. Weather was awesome, with some unexpected cloud coverage and great temps.

3 hours out with the pup.. hard to believe there are still trails within Phoenix I have still not been on.. checked a small section off today. I used to go up Stony Mountain from the south all the time but never tried from the north. . Too rocky for the Luna, had to turn back, but I want to do it some day soon.

On principle, I don't hike off trail in the city (or most places unless it is necessary), so for completion's sake, I hiked all the trails at the base of the mountain and respected all of the area closed signs for the summits.

This was my Black Friday evening hike. My friend recently bought a house near the end of Shea. He kept telling me there was this nice peak at the end of his street and wanted to check it out. There are a lot of trails in this area. We also made our way to the top of the peak although I can't find any info whether it has a name or not. This is pretty nice area and the sunset was great.

Had some time with just the boy and I so took a short hike with the dog to one of our old time spots. Started off 14th street with the headlamps. The trail goes pretty much straight up the hill up to the ridgeline. The ridge up here is pretty narrow but the path is very easy to follow, even though I hardly see anyone else hiking around here..especially at night. We hit up all 3 of the peaks on the sourthern end of the ridge. The sourthern most peak has a fun little scramble to get up. I have seen several maps where this section is actually called Echo Mountain, I wonder if anyone can confirm this. Made a loop back around down. There are several small caves you can climb up to around there. The kid had an excellent time exploring with the headlamp.

When it comes to hiking this trail, I feel like I'm cursed...or at least very forgetful. This is the second time I've planned on doing a portion of this trail and forgotten my Garmin. So the mileage is just a guesstimate on my part. Parked at the Dreamy Draw around 4;30. Surprised to see about 15 cars in the lot when I got there. More times than not this summer I've been hiking sans human contact. As it turned out, as soon as I went through the tunnel that goes under the 51 I only saw one other hiker and that was at a distance. Anyway, the purpose of this hike was to do the southwestern portion of the Stoney Mtn Ridgeline. I haven't done this section in a couple of years, but this is actually one of my favorite hikes in the Dreamy Draw area. The surrounding vista isn't that remarkable, because you are pretty much surrounded by homes, but the geology (rock formations) is remarkable and the trail is fun and challenging.

To do this hike, I went through the tunnel and then hung a left (west) at the trail marker that occurs shortly after the tunnel. After climbing the small hill you'll look upon a valley and to the west of the valley you see the southwest end of the Stoney Mtn Ridgeline. There are several trails that lead to these mountains so you have options on how you proceed. For me, as soon as I descended from hill (and entered the valley) I turned left and headed towards a large cairn. This took me along a flat stretch with some cool rock art that someone painstakingly created with Quartz rock (turtle, scorpions, snake, bird and a couple of other animals). I crossed a wash and then swung north skirting some hills and then west to climb up to a saddle. Descending a few feet down the other side of the saddle brings you to a clear cut trail that will bring you to the top of the peak. There are three peaks you can hit - decreasing in elevation as they go west. I hit the two tallest and then followed a trail down from the east side of the tallest peak. Once you get back into the valley there are several trails you can chose from to get back to the Dreamy Draw.

The pups and I did a loop with parts of the Stoney Ridge Line trail and the Charles #100 trail. We added smaller unnamed trails where we could. Great loop hike. The ridge line was a bit rough on my bigger dog. My smaller dog had no issues at all. She loves the rock hopping. It took us over an hour to go a mile up on the ridge. The humidity was high, so we stopped a few times along the ridge. Its amazing what a 5 minute break does.
We saw one small coyote and a colorful sunrise.
