Busy week not hiking or biking. Bought a new truck, sold my camper van, so sad. But, now that's all behind me, hit the beaches of Estrella Mountain Regional Park on the fat tire bike this morning. Trails were more sandy than ever! Started/finished at Estrella Foothills Community Park, took Park Ave, Crossover, Pedersen to Homestead, clockwise on Homestead and Pedersen. Saw one other biker just outside of the community park as I was heading out. Had one giant cloud looming overhead keeping me in the shade all morning. Made pictures a challenge though.

Been a while since I got to ride with the Bagel Bunch. Today 8 of us set off from Estrella Foothills Community Park on Pirate trails Park Ave over to the EMRP Iron Ranger, into the park on Crossover, Pedersen to Toothaker, briefly on Gadsden, north on Coldwater, west on Dysart, a bit on Rainbow Valley, back over to the Pirate trails, Pirate's Cove, Black Jack, Jumpline, and Sunrise back to the Community Park. We had a tire that refused to hold air until we put a tube in it, a broken off pedal, and a big crash on the Jumpline trail. 100% of the starting riders finished today :) Wow, it was humid and hot in the sun. Saw a couple of hikers in EMRP.

Crazy rains last night made for an epic fat bike ride on sandy EMRP trails this morning. Sticky icky start from Estrella Foothills Community Park. Took the sandy two track out to the EMRP Iron Ranger, Crossover trail to Pedersen, counter clockwise around to Homestead, west back to Pedersen, Crossover back to Iron Ranger, Park Ave to Sunrise back to the parking lot. Saw a hiker on Sunrise and a group of 6 mountain bikers at the Iron Ranger.

Beautiful morning for a mountain bike ride. Reprised my aborted ride from last week. Started from Estrella Foothills Community Park and took Park Ave over to the EMRP Iron Ranger. Crossover to Pedersen counter clockwise to Homestead, back on Pedersen, Gadsden, Toothaker, Pedersen, Crossover, and Park Ave back to the parking lot. Did a little exploring while I was out. Saw one woman in the parking lot with two giant poodles. No one else out on the trails.

Some feelings of oppression on the back nine. The heat and insufficient water does that, but the sandy section of Gadsden is such a buzz kill. Really the only enjoyable parts were the passes along the Rainbow Valley and Toothaker Trails. The rest was just MEH. Probably would be more fun on a mountain bike.

Post rain ride on the fat bike today. Started at Estrella Foothills Community Park and took the sandy two track over to the EMRP Iron Ranger, Crossover, Pedersen counter clockwise out and back, Fenceline over to GNODS, loop through GNODS then sandy powerline roads back to the Community Park. Sand was in primo condition from the past two days of rain. Saw one ASU pickup truck on Pedersen trail with a bunch of people wandering around the desert nearby. Witnessed a hawk catch a snake for lunch and fly away, so cool! But, not for the snake.

Took the fat bike over to EMRP this morning to go deep into the park and hit some of that sweet Pedersen sand. Started from the Navy south parking area under a nice canopy of clouds and hit Horseshoe, Toothaker, Butterfield, Gadsden, Pedersen (clockwise), Toothaker (south), Gadsden (east), Coldwater, Toothaker, and back on Horseshoe. First time going all the way down the Pedersen sand shoot. I was able to keep up great speed, but the washboard nearly ripped my arms off on the full rigid fat bike. Stopped to chat a bit with two pairs of mountain bikers. Had to get around 2 hikers who couldn't hear me calling to them over their ear buds, gosh.

I've ridden parts of Gadsden trail so many times, but never the whole trail, end to end, in one go. Took the fat bike over to EMRP to do just that today. To my surprise, actually found a line of cars waiting to get past the entrance station. The rodeo grounds are closed for the next 2 years so I parked at my next favorite spot, Navy South. Crossed Casey Abbott road and took Horseshoe trail over to Toothaker for a few feet, the clockwise on Buttterfield to Gadsden, Pedersen, Toothaker, and back on Horseshoe to the parking lot. It was a bit windy on Butterfield and Gadsden. I thought going downhill at the sandy south end of Gadsden would be better than my normal up direction, but the hoofed out sand really beat me up. The south end of Toothaker is starting to look back again, it's good from Rainbow Valley north. Saw 2 horseback riders on Butterfield. There's a section of the parking area right at Horseshoe trailhead that's roped off for horse trailer parking. Lots of hikers out on the trails, mostly close to Horseshoe. Saw 2 or 3 bikers.

Couldn't believe that it rained all day yesterday! I had to go ride the sandy EMRP trails! Started from Estrella Foothills Community Park and took the two track fenceline trail over to the EMRP Iron Ranger. Crossover trail then clockwise loop on Pedersen, Homestead, Gadsden, Toothaker, Pedersen, Crossover, and Park Ave back to the community park. Saw some hikers and bikers at the beginning and end of the ride, but no one else out in sandland. Warm sun, cool breeze, and rain soaked sand! NO DUST! Yeah! I was so happy!

Met up with half the Bagel Bunch (Bruce, Jen, James) riders at its namesake, Oasis Bagels at Estrella Parkway and Elliott for a ride through Pirate trail and EMRP trails. Crossed Estrella Parkway and found our way up Elliott to Pirates Cove, Bootlegger, Jolly Roger, Doubloon, Park Ave, EMRP Iron Ranger, Crossover, Pedersen, Gadsden counter clockwise all the way around to Butterfield, to the still open Rodeo Grounds, Rainbow Valley, the Summits, under Estrella Parkway on Tunnel Trail, Cottontail to the Cotton/Estrella roundabout, back to Oasis Bagels. Ran into the other half of the Bagel Bunch (Doug, Ken, Joeseph, Nick) on Gadsden trail. They were doing a loop out of the Comp Track parking area. Saw a few bikers and hikers out on the EMRP trails on this gorgeous day.

The weather radar on the news this morning indicated rain to be falling over Estrella Mountain Regional Park. Took the fat bike out on my favorite sand trails to investigate. I do believe the area may have received some rain, but not much. Lots of cloud cover. Headwinds in every direction, what's up with that! Had the trails all to myself. Took the sandy fenceline two track from the Estrella Foothills Community Park to the EMRP Iron Ranger, Crossover to Pedersen counter clockwise around to Homestead, down Homestead back to Pedersen over to Gadsden, up to Toothaker, back to Pedersend, Crossover, and Park Ave back to the Community Park.

With rain in the forecast, I wanted to get out on the fat bike before the sandy trails got all easy to ride. Started from the Estrella Foothills Community Park just before noon to cool temps, clouds, and blowing winds. Took the sandy two track from the powerline over to the EMRP Iron Ranger. Crossover trail to Pedersen counter clockwise all the way round to Homestead. West on Homestead back to Pedersen to Gadsden, Toothaker, back on Pedersen, Crossover trail to the Iron Ranger. West on the fenceline, then north on two track to the power lines and the Community Park. Saw two hikers at the Crossover/Pedersen intersection on the way in and nothing but ghosts the rest of the ride. Did a little exploration and found the Pedersen homestead from 1931.

New bike day! I ordered in a Canyon Dude fat tire bike with the expectation that I'd be able to explore the vast amount of desert two track roads on the west side of the Estrella Mountains. Fedex dropped the bike off about 4:30 last night. Basically you have to unbox the bike and install the front wheel, seat, and handlebars (and a lot of little adjustments for rider fit). Started at the Estrella Foothills Community Park once the morning warmed a bit. Took the sandy two track fenceline road out to the EMRP Iron Ranger. Then Connector to Pedersen, counter-clockwise all the way to Homestead. The 2 mile sandy climb was complicated by an orgy of hoof tracks from a horse event going on in EMRP this weekend. Lots of work, but doable. No way I would have made it on my regular mountain bike. Fast downhill on Homestead back to Pedersen. Back out on the Connector and Park Ave. Passed one trail runner on Homestead. Saw a horseback rider at the bottom end of Homestead and Pedersen. Saw one other mountain biker as I was signing in at the Iron Ranger. Got buzzed by some low flying STOL planes on Pedersen. Great day on the new bike. Looking forward to doing more exploring.

Decided to burn some calories before the Thanksgiving feast fest. Started at Estrella Foothills Community Park and headed north on the power line road to Tortuga Island, Scurvy Spine, Bootlegger, Jolly Roger, Park Ave to the EMRP Iron Ranger. Then Connector to Pedersen counter clockwise to Homestead back to Pedersen, still counter clockwise, to Gadsden, Toothaker, Pedersen, still counter clockwise :), Connector, Park Ave back to the Community Park. Saw a group of 6 riders on my way back to the Iron Ranger near the end of my ride. Sun was warm and the breeze was brisk. Trails in the park look like there flagged for an upcoming running event.

Another brunch ride. Got to the Estrella Mountain Regional Park entrance a little after 10am and found it closed. A road paint striping crew was laying down some new lines on the park roads and caused a major traffic jam (me and one other vehicle). Go to the rodeo grounds and was surprised to see a whole bunch of cars. Good for them! Worked my way to Butterfield via the short connector. Love the hard climbs on Butterfield! Then Gadsden to Pedersen. The cholla cactus fields along the trail are in a sorry state :( Took the Homestead shortcut back to west Pedersen. Homestead wasn't a sandy as I was expecting, that was nice. Tore a knob off my rear tire which promptly went flat. Thought I might be able to nurse it back to the trailhead by wrapping it with a cable tie. That solution lasted all of a half mile before I was pulling the wheel and installing a tube. Uneventful 5 miles back to the Rodeo grounds. Saw one couple hiking, twice, at the beginning and end of my loop. Went to West Phoenix Trek store and picked up a new tire. Got home and fully serviced the bike. All ready for the next ride. Oh yeah, the wife made shoofly pie today, so I got that going for me :)

No sign of the Bagel Bunch (over at Rio Vista :-s Dang it!) or anyone for that matter, except one lone, spunky little viper at the start. My expectations were met that these trails would probably be way more fun on a mountain bike. Reminded me a lot of the San Tan Mountain Regional or the Casa Grande Mountain Parks. Mostly flat desert with a bunch of sweeping turns. The eastern terminus of Homestead was a tease, especially after the constant uphill through all that monotonous desert, sand and a brisk headwind that didn't help. But wow! Corgett Wash looks as if it allows some great access to some of the craggy highpoints in this northwestern part of the range. Definitely will be back, especially if there are ways to get closer to the actual mountains with a wheeler and not have to hike all those filler miles.

Crazy thunderstorms woke me up last night. First thing that came to mind was, RIDE PEDERSEN TOMORROW! The rain soaked into the dry dry sandy Pedersen trail and made it ridable. Started at Estrella Foothills Community Park, took Park Ave to the EMRP Iron Ranger. Followed the Crossover trail, then counter-clockwise on Pedersen to Gadsden south to Toothaker back to Pedersen and returned on Crossover to Park Ave. Saw a ebiker at the Gadsden/Pedersen intersection. Soupy humidity this morning, but temps in the low 80's.

When it comes to the Pedersen, it’s all about the timing. Not only did we get a decent amount of rain yesterday, but the temps were cool and the skies overcast today. This was the perfect formula to tackle the dreaded sand trap, known as the Pedersen Trail. Didn’t get out to the TH until 11am. Started from the Coldwater Trail and took the connector/Butterfield Trail over to the Toothacher. Hiked the Toothacher to where the Pedersen starts. This first part of the Pedersen is actually pretty nice. A single track with some minor elevation change due to washes that initially cuts through some hills before twisting through the flatlands. This ends when the Pedersen junctures with the Gadsden. From the here, the single track becomes a road and goes straight - and I do mean straight - south. However, the annoyance that one feels at hiking a straight, unimaginative road is soon looked back at fondly when one turns east and heads up a straight and very sandy road. This sandy section last for about 1.5 miles and to put it nicely is a real killjoy. This is where the timing comes in. The previous night’s rain made for a fantastic sandy surface. Probably the best tread I’ve had on this section. :) Around 5.5 miles the Pedersen connects to the backend of the Homestead Trail. This is nice because it also signifies the transition from a road back to a broad single track. Having hiked a road for the last 3.5 miles it’s a good feeling to be back on a trail. The trail crosses a major wash and then passes through what I think of as the “cholla patch”. The chollas seem to be everywhere for the next .5 miles. The trail stays relatively close to the base of the Estrellas, never getting into the mountain, but playing off some of the mild slopes that come off the mountain. The elevation of the trail gives you a decent view of the flat terrain to the west. For about the next 3 miles the trail does a lot of twisting and turning as it heads north and eventually ends when to junctures with the Gadsden Trail. From here, I headed west for a short distance and then took the Coldwater Trail back to the TH.

Weather was ideal. Very cloudy at first, it ended being scattered clouds when I finished. Even though the skies were blue above me, I did get sprinkled on by cloud 3 miles away. Got love the wind. :) wildlife was minimal, though I did have a Monty Python moment. I was hiking up the sandy road when I saw a rabbit charging towards me. :o As soon as I saw this fearsome creature I stopped. The rabbit, which had started off being a good 40yds up the road, passed within 2 feet of me. I’m grateful that the rabbit took pity on me, though I may have nightmares. I probably won’t be able to watch the MP Holy Grail for the next month. Met 2 hikers on the Coldwater as I neared the TH.
