Much less trafficked on a Monday, making for a better hiker-to-lizard sighting ratio. The summit was pleasant and relatively quiet, I had it to myself for much of my time there. The haze from all the wind and smog was thick enough to obscure South Mountain, so that was gross.

Morning hike with wifey. Beautiful sunrise this morning with partly cloudy skies and cool breezes, and relatively clear for decent views.

I had the time to why not? The morning was nice and cool and warmed up a little on the way. Adero Canyon trail traffic was light but the Sunrise trail was busy. I kept up with the titans for a while until i didn't. They waited for me at the saddle and we continued on back to the the tralihead. A great morning workout before the feast. Nice to see everyone again.

 That was a barn burner! :) I've been thinking about this hike for a few years and finally completed it in the rain today. I'll admit that thesnake lit a fire underneath me to get it done. Thanks for the TL @thesnakefromthelemma. I completed it the easier direction though, so I'll have to go back and hike it south to north like he did. One thing this hike reminded me of was that Sunrise is a really wimpy peak compared to the rest of the McDowell Mountain range. : wink : Much of this route also was familiar to the Torote Loops in the Sierra Estrella range. Could be a five star route except for all those god-damned jets overhead constantly!

Arrived late so it was hot. Saw more lizards than people, which is a rare thing in the McDowells.

Popular trail. Good workout. Good views of surrounding urban landscapes. Didn’t notice the trail to the trailhead from the overflow lot until after I got back to the car.

A tale of two trails, err, I mean, one trail and essentially a route. Now I know why Sunrise Peak from 145th Street has over 5.4k activities recorded on Allfails and the 136th Street Spur less than 200. If you like plodding through sand, climbing over boulders, getting coated with Brittlebush pollen and dodging agitated vipers with very limited views of bougie McMansions, then the 136th Street Spur will be up one's alley. I'd repeat the Sunrise Trail again, the 136th Street Spur, not so much.

Spur of the moment hike. Turns out I left home just in time. The gate was scheduled to close at 6:12pm and I made it back to the car with 10 minutes to spare. First time up Sunrise in 12 years. Had no problem spotting the snow-capped Catalinas and Picacho Peak to the south. A very light dusting remains on Four Peaks.

Kelley’s cousin was visiting, staying in Fountain Hills, so we chose this shuttle hike since the start and end was close to the place they were staying. Everyone enjoyed the hike and views with lots of stops for pictures. Afterward we enjoyed a late lunch at the Andreoli Italian Grocer were we all ordered the Bocca Di Rosa (eggplant hoagie) which is a favorite of mine.

I've done Sunrise many times, many ways, but never this way. I started at the main parking lot for Sunrise and hiked up to the top and back down the other side via the 136th St spur trail, back to the neighborhood and back to the car. One big loop. It was very nice except the road-walking part. Not too hot, not too crowded. I took a break on top and watched and listened to all the building going on near Adero and they were very busy. I remember years ago there was nothing around here, I wish it would slow down. Anyway a great hike!

I found another trail that was an easy way to finish another HAZ area, this time Sunrise Peak-McDowell. I haven't done the Sunrise Trail from 145th St since April 2013 when I did it clear to Lost Dog and back. In fact, both times I've done this trail (Nov 2012) I did that; but not today. I guess I should have given thot to the over and back but I'll leave it up to the Thanksgiving gang.

It is a pretty hike and when the Brittlebush start blooming, it will be spectacular. There's plenty of great desert flora to keep you entertained and the trail is in good shape. It can be a little relentless on the upside and I hated every time the trail went down again when I was heading up. The people traffic was more than I thot it would be for a Wed. afternoon.

I was glad for every short flat section as I continued my way up and in and out of shade. There was a slight breeze from time to time. I did get to catch the fountain spouting off so I stopped to take a few pictures. I finally got to the intersection to either go straight and come up from the west side or go up here, on the east side. I've been up the east side a lot so I opted to go up this side. It surprisingly has some short inclines along with the steep inclines so really not too bad. I crossed over on this high trail to meet up with Sunrise west to finish the last of the climb.

I didn't really stay long on top as I've been up here several times. There was one group up here so I followed them down. There were still others coming up as I descended. The shade was fairly prominent now but I had already rolled down my shirt sleeves. One of the gals in front of me stopped to take a picture at an area I had taken on the way up but the backlighting really made the leafed-out ocotillos stand out.

My right hip/leg is giving me grief on and off during the hike but mostly after it's over. I do have a bone density test next month so we'll see if my hips are continuing to deteriorate or are maintaining. I've had this problem before and it went away so I'm hoping that's the case again.

I got back down to the trailhead but in order to get my 100% of the trails in an area, I had to take the Sunrise Trail Equestrian Spur to the overflow lot. It was a fun little trail and took you into a wash that was rather interesting. The Wash Trail continues but you hang a right (west) to go up to the Overflow lot where they have a water fountain for human and animal. From there it's a short jaunt up to the main Trailhead.

I enjoyed my Huck beer and ordered my Shrimp and Vegetables to go from the Thai House in north Scottsdale where I've been going for years back when I was a working girl.

WATCH: 4.48 miles (high point 3136, low 1906) Avg bpm 139, max 168 with 30% at anaerobic, 30% at zone 3 aerobic and the rest at zone 2 weight control burning 919 calories (I thot it would be more due to elevation gain so I wonder how they calculate that). Starting temp 62.5 and 17% humidity finishing at 4:25PM.

Cloudy but no rain or lightning or thunder. Was 71 degrees at 3:00 in July - can’t beat that! 40000% humidity though 🥵 Not many on trail. Not much mud or damage from rain - this is a rocky old trail. Doesn’t wash out like the northern sandy ones that get closed after rains.

Happy monsoon !

This a hiking stop on the way home from work. The trail is shaded most of the hike after 5:30pm. This one has more traffic than I like but is nice for a change.

I woke up to RAIN in Scottsdale this morning. It was a 2% chance or something, but not 0%. I was off of Shea so I went out to my favorite valley hike.

Temps were 70 at 7:30 and there were a couple of parking spots. Altogether, the views and sky were amazing.

The trail was full on insta-fabulous on the way down including a couple from Iowa who are killing it on MySpace. The beautiful Scottsdale crowd love to pet dogs so Luna was the big winner today. Only up to 77 degrees at the finish!!!!

A warm-up hike - To see if I remembered how to put one boot in front of the other.

145th St TH, up Sunrise Tr, then a right at the hitching post, and down Andrews/Kinsey Tr.
On the way back, I ventured up to Sunrise Peak.

I had to park in the Aux parking lot, as the regular lot was already filled. I saw more people hiking today, than I normally see in a year of doing my normal 'Off-the-Beaten Track' Hikes.
Oh yeah - It was Sunday and in the McDowells. 😀

Actually, it was nice seeing so many people getting exercise, and enjoying the outdoors.

Once I ventured down the A/K Tr, the crowds dissipated, except for quite a few trail runners. The A/K Tr is perfect for runners.

Great weather, and great trails.
It's good to be hiking in AZ again.

Started at sunrise TH and hiked nearly to adero canyon TH. This hike was full of people through the first half. Veered off to the Andrew-kinsley trail to get away from the crowds. Then continued past the FH boundary.

Hike starts a bit steep and allows for some nice views at 3000 ft on sunrise peak. Both parking lots were nearly full. Will look to start from adero camyon in the future but sunrise a bit too popular for my liking.

Nabbed one of the last parking spots, even though I showed up before sunrise. By the time I stepped off the parking lot, there were no spots.

Surprisingly warmer at the trailhead (82) than the house in mesa (74). Maybe the canyon traps in heat? Heavy wind gusts made up for it, though. Smoky clouds to the North from the Horse fire, I'm sure the wind isn't helping.

Even though the trailhead was full, didn't seem like the trail was too crowded.
