Early start from 104th St. No headlamp necessary. Got up to Bell Pass a little after sunrise to find clouds to the east, so we got to hike without direct sunlight pretty much the whole hike. Humid but once we got to Bell Pass there was a breeze to dry us off. The trails are dust free and compacted from recent rain. Good hike. Thanks for breakfast after Kelly. :)

I don’t have as much time to adventure on weekdays anymore, so I’ve been creating my own little mini adventures 5 minutes away. I headed up to check out the mine I spotted on my prior hike this week. Surprisingly, there was a pretty decent path heading up there. The mine was huge and very interesting. There was a date (July 30, 1917) on a foundation area next to the mine. Past the mine, the faint path continued and headed right up to a mini peak that I’ve enjoyed chips n salsa on before! I decided to head up to the other mini peak above that one and it had a great view. I did see spray paint {explicit} up there and that wasn’t cool...don’t bring your kids! It was way too windy on that peak to watch sunset, so I started heading down and passed the other mine on the way back. The skies were amazing, and I was away from the masses and very content. I found my next target, which is a numbered peak above the other two. Gotta love finding new things to see in your backyard.

a quick between travel hike thanks to the temps being low enuf to get an after work hike in from 104th St clockwise on the Gateway Loop and then over on the Crosscut to Levee Trail.

A lovely day out. I wanted to get a good pace and it looks like I did altho I wonder about the mileage being a little off as HAZel didn't keep up with me the first bit. I did the adjustment in the Cloud when I loaded it to avoid the straight line but being as it didn't record, I'm thinking it missed 1/3-1/2 mile. I went thru the triplogs to see if anyone had done the loop like I had to get the correct mileage but to no avail. I'll have to try the route officially and make sure HAZel is with me the entire way. You just can't have anything else running unless you make sure to re-touch RS.

Anyway, not many folks out including no poop fairy to pick up the blue plastic bags. I did see a couple bike riders. As I came around on the south side heading west, the lingering palo verde's blooms was a sweet sight. It was good to get out instead of being stuck with going to the gym. I'm heading to Montana tomorrow. Sad thing is all my Iris are budding for the first time in 7 years and I'll miss getting to see them bloom all at one time; but at least I got to see a couple of the blooms.

Sorry that I haven't been able to keep up with everyone's triplogs and pictures. I feel bad as I know I'm missing a lot. I have to settle with the Comments and HAZ Forum for now and an occasional photo set and triplog. Now I'm off to Montana to hopefully close out the condo my dad was living in so I'll have one less thing to occupy my time.

Happy Trails.

From house to Paradise around counter clockwise to Gateway Saddle and around the loop. Then took Crossover Trail to Levee back to Paradise and home. Was smidge past sunset on Levee trail. Moon was so pretty.

Lousy time to saddle: 40 minutes. But was taking tons of pics.

I used to hike to Bell Pass from 104th a bunch before kids were born. Then the Gateway TH opened in 2009 and just got too crowded for me - plus good stretch of hike is flat so if I'm looking for "quicky" exercise hike it takes too long to get to the good AEG.

But I realized that the driving to Tom's Thumb each way is about 25 minutes (plus 1h15 min to 2h hike) - - so is the same total time as doing Bell Pass which is 4/10th of a mile from our house.

On the way up saw very few people except trail runners (started around 7:00am) - but on the way down was pretty crowded on the Gateway section (duh it's a Sunday). But legs got a good workout and I had forgotten that most of the hike is in the shade of the mountains in early morning. Next summer I will have to do more Bell Pass hikes as you don't have to wait for a trailhead gate to open and is well shaded.

I'm glad I had on a jacket - was pretty chilly in the shade! And thank you to Brad for watching the kids while I got to hike alone. :D

Also was surprised to see thick brittle bush in bloom in a wash on Crossover Trail and scattered blooms along trail edge of Bell Pass too.

After work hike. Goal was to incorporate the Crossover Trail and get some miles so I started off doing the Gateway Loop clockwise and then about 4 miles in I took the Crosscut Trail west and the south. This isn't much of a trail, only .2 miles long. It's more of connector to the Levee Trail. If you take the trail south, you'll see a side trail that goes east. This trail parallels the Gateway trail, at a lower elevation, and eventually crosses the Paradise Trail on its way to an old mine on the side of hill. I followed this trail to where it intersected the Paradise Trail and then turned around. On the way back I took another side trail north to where it eventually met with the Equestrian/104th St. Trail juncture. This side trail I was on was probably either the equestrian or the 104th trail but I never saw a sign indicating which until the juncture. From the juncture I took the Equestrian back to the parking lot. Saw about 6 people while I was out, but the lot was quite a bit fuller by the time I got back. Saw the typical desert park dwellers....rabbits, quail and chipmunks.

Believe it or not, I am actually close to 500 miles for the year. Who knew that back in 2009 when I started serious hiking and could barely do 6 miles, that now a 6 mile jaunt is the least I want to do. I like this hiking thing as it's given me the opportunity to stay healthy, meet new people and see cool places.

Anyway, I am going to try and do the 500. After this hike I have 20 miles to get 'er done. I should get around 10 on Saturday and the last 10 should be easy enough because there is one more weekend before the end of the year.

Oh ya, this IS a trip report. So I decided in the limited daylight after work that I would do the ever reliable Gateway Loop clockwise and see if I could tack on some extra mileage on the south side of the loop. Oh, I had Annie with me and boy was she annoying constantly saying "paused workout, resumed workout" even though I kept a steady pace until I got up to the mine. I think she just likes to hear herself talk. Well she will be silent on my next hike as I will delete :gun: the auto pause updates.

Anyway, it was a delightful afternoon for a hike; especially when I could see the western sky. There was one heck of a show going on. Little did I know it would get even better. As I was walking down the southside of Gateway I noticed what looked like a trail below the mine. I recall some of you hiking over there when I think it was still a trail (or maybe not still a trail) so I decided that is where I would get some extra mileage.

I crossed over on the Paradise Trail and then went SE on what appeared to be an old road. I went up the road and at the fork, I decided the high road would get me to the mine. It was a little hard walking on that road as its rocky. As I got beneath the mine the color of some of the rocks had that coppery green look to them 8) . The road seemed to fork a little and once again I took the high and steep road right up to the mine. Wow is that adit deep. Of course it's fenced which is certainly understandable. I walked around it trying to get a good viewpoint but to no avail.

I headed off toward Bell Pass direction rather than back down the way I came. I think I was on an old road/trail and followed that 'til it seemed to melt into the hillside. From there I headed down to the road with the thot of eventually hooking up to the Bell Pass Trail. Instead, I ended up in a wash and saw cairns. I followed the cairns on what seemed an obvious route and ended back up on the lower road that had forked from the higher road. WOW was that fun  . I'm going to have to explore over there some more. So I decided to take the Levee Trail.

And remember that "sky" issue I mentioned earlier. Well my God it was just something. Wishing I had a camera I realized KemoSabe was with me and though I haven't used the camera function much, I gave it a shot. The colors of the sky were so intense and with the swooshy clouds, amAZing :y: . I took as many shots as I could before continuing the hike crossing over to and eventually meeting back up with the Gateway Loop Trail. It actually got a bit chilly so I had to put my shirt on over my top.

On the drive to Basha's for my piece of pizza, the sun setting was still putting on a show. It was heart-stopping. I thot to pull over but then hoped that some of my Facebook buddies would capture it (FYI - nice job Pam). And then I saw some fellow HAZers got some shots too :) . I was actually glad when I got to the store and couldn't see it anymore cuz I couldn't get a picture :( .

PS this hike did just barely break last year's 479.94 record for me: 480.28

a nice hike. I was trying to see why I couldn't get Kemo Sabe to work consistently. Anytime I would put the Jellybean into my fanny pack, it would quit working. I discovered I needed to carry my phone or put it in my shirt pocket for it to work. Apparently it loses signal or whatever when I put it in my fanny pack. So I listened to Phil Collins greatest hits between talk radio as I winded my way along the trail.

It was a nice afternoon as I started after 3. I ran into 5 lizards (one per mile it seemed) and then I ran into Kathy and Karl :) on the back side of the Loop. They had a long journey ahead of them but they hike pretty fast so it would probably only be a few hours for them though they would be coming back on part of it in the dark for sure.

There weren't as many people out as I thot. I saw no one on the Levee or Paradise part of the trail at all. The section coming down from the Saddle is longer than I recall. I like the MapMyFitness app as it comes on at every mile to let you know how your are doing.

Dropped kids off school - squeezed in a hike from parking lot 104th over Gateway Saddle to intersection with Windgate then back to start again. Little sunny but not too hot.
Not super crowded yet.
Partially jogged last bit. Now time for pick up kids, dentist appt for them, and playdate with friends later. But I got in my workout and a little hike!!

After work hike. I knew these spur trails in the McDowell foothills wouldn't be too exciting so I brought along my lizard net to work on my gummo skills. Most of the lizards were too fast for me, but toward the end of the hike I came across one that allowed me to get really close. Swoosh! Got 'em! Of course, when I looked down into the net I saw two objects squirming around; the lizard and his tail. I know lizards can regrow their tails, but I still felt bad. What if he needs that tail to escape a real predator? Maybe I don't have the heart for lizardnapping...

Another of my "Goofy Loop" hikes in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, Scottsdale AZ.

The wonderful part about being retired is that you don't have to be anywhere at any particular time. Of course to some, that's also the horrible part about being retired. In my case, it's definitely a positive. No more tan lines where my wrist watch used to be.

With no particular destination in mind, I simply started out hiking the MSP at the Gateway Trailhead, as I typically do. Jumped around the heavily traveled Gateway Loop Trail - south on some parallel trail that I'm not sure of the name. I've been there before but never noticed there's a fallen stone building on the trail. The foundation looks still intact. It's relatively modern, I'd say. Perhaps some 20th century ranch building, spring house, tool shed etc from the old Brown's or DC ranch days in the mid 1900s.

This trail connects to another unnamed trail as it passes Paradise Trail and heads toward the fenced in mine that you can see from the south part of Gateway Loop and the West part of Bell Pass Trail. The trail is closed once you get up there about a quarter mile so I turned back, headed south on Paradise Trail.

Paradise Trail is one of those trails that starts in the preserve, then leaves the preserve and follows the creek bed through a Scottsdale subdivision. Not quite the luxury mansions that you find on the NORTH side of the Gateway, but not exactly the slums. Since it's spring, and we've had considerable rain in the past 30 days, the flora is pretty lush and overgrown. That tends to hide the fact that you're a stone's throw away from residences on both your right and left.

Just after leaving the preserve, I kicked over a cairn and went EAST up a little trail that looked lightly traveled. It was one of what I call "Party Trails". The local idiots hike up those a hundred yards or so, party, leave trash etc. I spent quite some time digging out all the broken green glass bottle trash I could find from one of the party spots.

Continued south on Paradise Trail to it's juncture with Quartz Trail. This is still heavily residential. You can hike just a short way OUT of the stream bed and reach the Paradise Trailhead parking area, shopping center, schools, heavy traffic. Or you could turn LEFT-EAST and get onto Quartz Trail and head toward the State Land Permit restricted area. I chose to simply turn around and return to MSP. This trail is relatively level, downhill toward Paradise Trailhead, slightly uphill toward Gateway. Nothing strenuous at all.

Back at Gateway Loop, I joined the traffic pattern counter clockwise and went over Gateway Saddle to Windgate Pass Trail. Turn RIGHT-EAST there and I'm now on the "roller-coaster" part of Windgate. Lots of clearly inexperienced hikers in inappropriate clothing, no water etc typically gather at the trail markers there at Gateway x Windgate junction. One of them looks at the sign and says "Oh we could go to Bell Pass either way from here". For those not familiar, getting to Bell Pass is grueling from one direction due to the elevation gain. Less grueling but several miles of up-down-up-down in the other direction. Not exactly what I'd recommend for someone wearing Ugg boots with no water.

OK, up Windgate Pass Trail to Tom's Thumb Trail. I like this part of the preserve a lot. You can look NORTH into some pretty steep canyons and see a lot of undisturbed flora and fauna. I took the Tom's Thumb trail across those canyons to what I call Desert Park to Tom's Thumb Cutoff. That little piece of trail seems very lightly traveled. It leads back toward "civilization" and joins with Desert Park Trail which, at this point, is NOT within the MSP, but still Scottsdale City Park and protected.

Then turn back SOUTH toward Gateway Loop Trail on Desert Park Trail proper. It's about one half mile across the canyons to Gateway Loop. About half way through that you come to the marked entrance to the preserve. I'm always humored by the signs at nearly all Scottsdale City Parks "No weapons except guns and knives". I was glad I didn't have my rocket launcher.

Soon back on Gateway Loop, I headed WEST toward the Gateway Trailhead. But before reaching there, made a RIGHT-NORTHWEST on Horseshoe Trail. This trail is pretty short, just over a mile I think. It joins with Desert Park Trail which then returns to the final destination of Gateway Trailhead. The trail is pretty flat and easy. I hike this small loop mainly because there are lots of idiots on this easy trail. I picked up 3 or 4 cigarette butts, more broken glass, dog poo bags. As I mentioned in another triplog, I consider this kind of trash "Stupid Trash" as opposed to "Incidental Trash", like nuts and bolts or shoe parts that simply fall off trail users.

Pretty much combined nearly all types of trails here, out and back, loop, lassoo, big loops, little loops, figure 8s. A little under 12 miles, a little under 5 hours including a couple of lengthy stops to pick up trash.

Hike like you need a root canal the following day -

Every subsequent day I hike this area I see more and more Mexican Poppies, purple cactus blooms and African Dasies. Huge fields of them in the more sun exposed slopes.

Wanted to see wildflowers in McDowells and boy did we ever! :GB: Got babysitter for kids. Took the last parking spot at 104th St lot. Saw busted glass from either a break in or accident and new signs saying don't leave anything visible in your car.

Creosote and brittle bush explosive along Levee trail. Poppies, lupine, and scorpion weed all along Bell Pass trail. Surprisingly abundant pink baja fairy duster on back side of Bell Pass and Windmill. East End decent amount of poppies, chuparosa, and lupine (although hard to see anything through the pain fog of that climb). Tom's Thumb had nice stretches of poppies. Overall just about anywhere you look there was something.

This out/back route is the way to go to avoid people and get an interval training work out. East End will kick your a@@ front ways and backwards. It's a killer up and down on your knees (40 year old knees at least ;) ).

1st trip
Today was a "date hike" day on Valentine's Day with hubby. Kids in preschool - we dropped them off then raced to get started knowing we had to pick up around 3pm for ballet. Luckily we started at the 104th parking lot not even a half a mile from the house.

We went COUNTER clockwise for our first time on this loop that I have been dying to do since having a newborn when AlHikesAZ first wrote this up. I remember thinking that once the new Mommy "fog" lifted that I would be out there with my light-weight, easy infant to hike this new loop on my maternity leave. Ha!! Light-weight, yes - easy, no! We even tried to do this loop last year on one of our spring date hike days, but George got sick and we ended up doing the smallest possible loop in the McDowells on Levee and Paradise. Was disappointing but par-for-the-course in our parenting lives.

So to finally complete this frickin' loop was quite a joy! To be in good enough shape to do it in pretty darn good time for a middle aged Mom - and going counter clockwise and back over Gateway Saddle (instead of the lower part of Gateway Loop) - was just amazing. Happy Freakin' Valentine's Day to ME! I love you, McDowells!! :budrose: :budrose: (and the hubby too :D ) I love this loop - love living close to these mountains - love the weather today - love hardly seeing any people on most of the hike - love that we got in a double-digit hike without any kid disaster phone call - love The Thumb and the incredible views up there.

Stay away from Gateway loop near the main trailhead - and you avoid a whole lot of human contact. Hardly anyone is on Levee/crossover - and way more people go out and back along Gateway then cross the saddle.

So the last stretch of Levee is flat but bumpy and my quads have a quiver in them - and we've got to get home in time to clean up before ballet. Quick tub soak combined with ibuprofen and diet Coke ... now ready to shuttle kids to activities. Old life colliding with new life. It's all good. Especially on a day with 13.3 miles in it :GB:

Fun afternoon in the McD's. I took the direct route up Thompson hitting 2 peaks and 3 subpeaks on the way. Went up by the stock scam mine and saw a date in concrete of July 30, 1917. The scam was discovered in the 1920's...I think it started in the late 1890's. Saw another mine/dig on one of the sub peaks. Lots of :pk: on every saddle some had scratch marks next to it and some was covered where the scratch marks were. It was good to get this done heading up. I've taken the route down a few times.

As Jack Nicholson said, in the movie "The Shining" ........
I also said to Drinkwater Peak, when I finally got up there ............ "I'm Baaaack !!!!"

If you couldn't care less about benchmarks on mountain tops, do not refer to my previous triplog on Drinkwater Pk. Boredom and glazed-over eyes will set in immediately.
Here's the link ----- http://hikearizona.com/photoset.php?ID=23604

One quote from that triplog however is
"I vow to come back and look one more time, after I do a bit more research."

Well, I did more research and I did come back. And - I did have success. :) :)
(WOW - I sound quite dramatic - after all it was just a hike. ;) )

I first searched for the missing (or not found) reference mark #2 for McDOWELL RESET Triangulation Benchmark. After receiving guidance from a more experienced benchmark hunter, and using the datasheet info, plus some logic, I successfully found exactly where Reference Mark #2 was installed by the surveyors. The actual disk is gone, but after moving some rocks and debris, I found the "bore-hole" that the surveyors drilled to place the disk, plus that bore-hole area had remnants of the cement they used to secure the disk. Good for me. That mystery is solved.

Once I got done taking about 10 photos of that tiny bore hole, using all different camera settings, I moved on to find where the actual survey benchmark disk was installed back in 1924. (In 1935, surveyors replaced the 1924 "pried-out" disk with a new one,... ergo the use of RESET)
It should be easier to locate, now that I know where both reference marks were placed, and it was easier.

After some measuring, and moving some rocks that were clandestinely hiding the actual boulder outcrop that the surveyors used for mounting, I dug a bit, brushed sand away etc, and voila - another bore hole was in sight. Obviously, that triangulation benchmark disk is also gone.
The vandals that stole the two disks must have cracked that boulder outcrop into sections to get the disk out. Gee - I hope they're proud of themselves.

Anyway, after even more photos of this bore-hole and the surrounding area, I said good-bye to Drinkwater Pk and the two bore-holes, I hiked back to McDowell Pk and said good-bye to the sole inhabitant (the solar-paneled antennae), and left the area very satisfied.
Mission accomplished.

Jack Nicholson would be proud!
