Supes day today. We got started from First Water around 0715. Warmish temps to start, but some high clouds. Took Dutchman to Bull Pass, then Bull Pass up to Black Top Mesa. The moments of shade were nice. Nice break atop the mesa, with a good breeze.

Continued east on Bull Pass, a moment on Dutchman again, then north on Cavalry. The east half of Cavalry could use some work. The trail is vague and brushy in spots. At one point, Kelly was leading, and she stopped abruptly and said “cameras.” We obeyed immediately and got some nice pics of a Gila monster on the trail. He looked a bit underfed. Lunch break in some shade, then the western half of Cavalry was in better shape. I wished the breeze had stuck around. Saw two sort of lost hikers. We provided no helpful information.

North on Boulder Canyon. West on Second Water to finish the loop. I never like the rocky sections of Second Water. Saw five backpackers. Overall, a very quiet day. Great hike and company. Fun day.

met up with linda and bruce around 0715 at first water
the initial objective was black top mesa, then to be determined
dutchman, bull pass and up the well defined use trail to btm
such a great spot with 360 views of the superstitions and some inscriptions to hunt for
we took a break here just enjoying the surroundings
back down to bull pass, we decided to complete the marsh valley loop
nice to see things from the opposite direction
cavalry trail is kind of a mess from fire and flooding
we spotted a gila monster on the trail
took a lunch break along the way
dropped into boulder canyon and finished up on second water
nothing like a big uphill at the end of a long day
good combo of a classic loop and a high point
thanks for inviting me! always good to hike with linda and bruce :)

It had been eight years since I’d been up on Black Top Mesa, so it was definitely time for a return trip. We had a couple of loop options in mind and decided on the Marsh Valley loop after descending from the Mesa. The temperatures were pleasant throughout the day, with filtered clouds fending off the sun's stronger rays for the majority of our hike.

Dutchman Trail #104
This section of the Dutchman has never been a favorite of mine, but with all the greenery and flowers, it was actually quite nice. Passing East Boulder Canyon, you get some great views of Weaver’s Needle.

Bull Pass Trail #129
This climb really gets the heart beating! It’s short and feels like more than a 300-foot climb, but you get a bit of a break once you reach the Bull Pass Saddle.

Black Top Mesa
It’s another 600-foot gain to the top at the south end of Black Top Mesa. We checked out the petroglyphs and other assorted carvings. The views from this spot are easily some of the best in the Supes. After taking a break and enjoying the breeze, we headed down. The path across the mesa is much more defined now than it was on my last trip.

Cavalry Trail #239
We started seeing water along the Cavalry Trail, along with more evidence of previous fires. You need to pay attention along here, as the trail gets thin in spots.

Boulder Canyon Trail #103
More burn area along here, but the geology in the colored cliff bands is beautiful. We had lunch in one of the few shady spots available. As we continued, views of The Battleship’s stern came into sight.

Second Water Trail #236
This was our last "earnest" climb of the day. We also encountered our first fellow hikers here; most were backpackers on their way into the wilderness.

It was great to get back out to the Supes and hike with Kelly and Linda again.

Chris invited Wally and I to this adventure. It’s been a while since I have been up to Black Top Mesa and jumped at the chance. We arrived at the trailhead in the dark and set off. The temps were a little chilly, but not too bad.

We opted to do a loop via Dutchman Trail, up Bull Pass to the top and then back via Black Mesa Trail/Second Water.

The Dutchman was in good shape. No signs of water up to Parker Pass and signs of the recent fire were evident. We turned off the headlamps at the pass and started down towards Bull Pass. There were a few puddles/pool in the West Boulder Creek, but no other signs of water afterwards.

The fire scars were very clear all the way to the junction. Lots of black tree/bush skeletons and downed cacti. There was also lots and lots of green grass and other plants that have benefited from all the rain over the past months. Nature has a way of healing itself. This area has been forever altered in the process.

The hike up Bull Pass was the usual steepness. Once near the top, it was clear just how much grass had grown up there. It was more like Green Top Mesa. The namesake black basalt rocks were still there, but under a blanket of green grass. Just like the previous fires have reduced native vegetation and replaced it was grass in other areas of the mountains, this place is ripe for another fire as well.

The views were amazing as always. Wally showed me a couple of new modern glyphs towards the north end of the mountain that I have never seen. I am guessing most, if not all of the glyphs are from the modern era up on the mountain. Still cool to see crazy people hiked up here in the 1930’s just as we have in the 2020’s.

We hiked down and started up Black Mesa. I haven’t been on this trail since Wally and I did a recon hike after the fire back in 2024. The signs were still there. Roasted and dead saguaro, black tree/bush skeletons. The top of the mesa was a roasted moonscape in 2024. It was a green grass-a-topia this time around. Every fire kills off the native stuff and grass replaces it. Black Mesa will definitely burn again. This is the new normal.

The weather was near perfect all day. A slight chill in the air at the start and sunny skies and very pleasant temps the rest of the hike. Lots of people out on the trails. We came across some familiar faces going down Bull Pass. It was a conga line for a while. The “Flex-Lane” for Bull Pass was running. I have never seen that many people on this trail, ever. Black Mesa and then Second Water had a good number of hikers out as well. The stream grew larger as we approached the trailhead.

Another awesome day in the Supes. Gotta love it!

I had not been up on Black Top Mesa in a while so I in. The early morning start was nice and the trail easy going. The climb up Bull Pass and then Black Top Mesa was more than I remember but a good test.

We poked around the top and looked an the various etching made over the years. Andy and I made a second attempt to find the other sunburst and even thought I knew where it should be (near Stone Mountain rock) I could not see it in the sunlight until it was viewed from the opposing angle.

We passed a few HAZards on the hike down and stopped for lunch near Black Mesa trail after which we got to climb up to Black Mesa. I poked around on Black Mesa and found a few sherds. The mine tailings in Black Mesa are still visible since the burn.

The hike back was uneventful with several hikers out on the trails. We finished up while it was still nice out. A good day on the trail.

Got a crazy early pre-6am start because Andy is headed to the Phillipines the next day, so the first 2.5 miles were hiked in the dark. Just as well, I've done the Black Mesa loop enough times I can do it with my eyes closed as it is. Headed out on LDT, then up to Black Top Mesa. Lots of green out like everywhere. I concur with Andy's description of Green Top Mesa.

Andy and Wally took a detour to the west end of the mesa to look for the lesser known sunburst with the word "oro" under it. They couldn't find it so they headed over to the east end, where I had already arrived. They found the broken sunburst and I found The End. Wally and Andy pointed out the other petroglyph on the back of the broken sunburst, which I don't remember from my previous trip up there, 13 years earlier. Pictures were taken.

On the way down Wally and Andy went back to the east of the mesa find the other petroglyphs/century old graffiti and were successful on the second try. I headed back down and back to the parking lot. On the way down the Bull Pass Trail, a big group was headed up and to where we just left. In the midst of them was @ScottHika. I talked with him a bit and he was gone, trying to catch up with his group. Wally later told me that this group was led by @John10s. Everyone in that group was moving uphill faster than I was downhill.

Wally caught up with me towards the bottom of Bull Pass and we stopped and had lunch once we were on the Black Mesa Trail, at which point Andy was already catching us. the hike back from there was uneventful. Made my usual stop at the Indian ruins in Garden Valley and saw the rock where everyone puts more pottery sherds. No hikers at all on Black Mesa Trail, and then lots of traffic on First Water, as usual.

This area has healed up quite a bit from the fire in '24. Very green and a lot less of the charred vegetation is visible, but it's still there. Weather was absolutely perfect. May have been about 70 once we finished. Chilly to start, but sunny and clear all day.

Yellow Black Black

Beautiful Saturday in the Superstition Mountains as January comes to close 15 miles 3600 AEG. Temperatures were low 60s to amazing 80s across the 7-hour day. Tackled 3 peaks with @John10s, well it was more like BEHIND John as he led the pack for the day. Respect. John was moving so fast I had to do high speed time lapse photography. Took Second Water Black Mesa and hit Yellow Peak 3061 first. If you’ve ever gone up, it’s pretty much just up over the rolly boulders to the top least resistance. Random pointless cairns here and there… The Superstition are super green with full wildflower explosion right now. Was trying to remember the last time it looked like this, this early for spring… Poppies lupines hyacinths globemallow brittlebush explosion and everything else…

Working with clear sky but a bit low visibility, signed the summit register and headed down. I’m ready for some more rain to keep things popping. Regrouped in Boulder Basin, which is making ongoing recovery after be desolated by the Sawtooth Fire. The fried Bull Pass sign has been replaced which was nice to see. Ran into a gang of cool kids coming down from a secret mission @wallyfrack @adilling @DarthStiller. It was mission accomplished I gather. Spent a little time at second destination Peak 3354 (aka Black Top Mesa) noshing and reading inscriptions scattered across the mesa. I usually find new ones here and there. The social trail to The End is pretty worked in now. A lot of the cactus forest that used to be up there is no longer. Pretty easy navigation to just about any place you want to get to now.

Back down Bull Pass reversed up Black Mesa trail for the final summit Peak 3097 aka Black Mesa. Also making good post-Sawtooth-fire recovery and a mild slope traverse to summit More scenic shots and group bonding before the descent. At this point everybody was racing back to end the day. Took my time and rode the caboose back to First Water TH. Was a steady day there with folks coming and going. These are all places I’ve been before but never on the same day. The overall was a bit faster than I usually hike so taxed me a bit, but cannot wait till my next trip… As the saying goes, “another great day in the mountains”.

I joined a MeetUp group that was going to hit three peaks (more like a peak and two mesas) in the western Superstitions, starting from First Water Trailhead. We set out with a group of 11 at ~7:20AM and took Second Water to Black Mesa Trail, then SE toward Yellow Peak. I hadn't been up there in a few years, and it was a short but steep approach to the summit, with even better views than I remembered.

After a few minutes regrouping at the top, we dropped back down to Black Mesa Trail and continued south toward Black Top Mesa. Going up, we passed @wallyfrack, @DarthStiller and his Steelers attire, and @adilling on their way down. Up on top, the group gathered around the sunburst and enjoyed the views and a snack break before heading back down for stop number three.

We hiked north on Black Mesa Trail back toward Yellow Peak, then left the trail and hiked up the grassy meadow to the southwest toward Peak 3097. The grade wasn't bad at all, though there were lots of rocks hidden in the tall grass. I hadn't been to 3097 before and wasn't sure what to expect for views from the mesa, but it was surprisingly nice--lots of healthy saguaros up there, and that spot is perched on a cliff edge overlooking Parker Pass and has great views of Weaver's Needle, Yellow Peak, Malapais, and the Goldfields.

We finished off the hike on Black Mesa/Second Water Trails again and were done a little after 2PM. Didn't see any interesting wildlife (as expected with a group that large), and though we didn't encounter much water, it was very green out there, with plenty of flowers blooming. Beautiful day to be outside--very warm for January, with temps pushing 80°. And nice to see @ScottHika again and meet some new people!

Chris was in town while traveling between CA and NM, so we made plans to hike today. Got started from First Water around 0730. East on Second Water, then south across Black Mesa.

Ran into an acquaintance (Shea) as we got onto Dutchman. Chatted for a moment, then continued in opposite directions. Headed up Bull Pass, which has seen some erosion, then up Black Top Mesa. Humid on the climb. Took a break at the top, then headed back down. Took Dutchman all the way back to the trailhead. The clouds for the final few miles were nice.

Lots of green out there. Great to see Chris again!

Fantastic Christmas day hike with some showers, making the Superstitions very moody. Plenty of water in the various sources after recent rain, flowing in some places. Burnt areas are full of greenery, with grasses, shrubs, and plenty of wild flowers.

Long but relatively simple hike up to the summit, where my companion activated it as a SOTA summit. Found the petroglyphs (and other more 'modern' etchings) up on the summit edge too.

Was thinking of getting Palomino in too, but as usual I was a bit slow and wanted to get back before sunset.

With the influx of rain, I wanted to get out in the Supes. Thought about waterfall hunting, but opted to avoid the crowds who undoubtedly had similar plans. Based on my observations, I don't think there was enough water as of Saturday to get much sustained waterfall action (though there might be now, as I'm writing this up).

Arrived at First Water TH a bit before 6:30 in the rain. Crossed several running washes along the way. From the get-go, it was just me, and I had total solitude for the next 16 miles.

I hadn't done any extensive hiking in this area since the last fire, and it was depressing to hike through mile after mile of pretty thoroughly charred wilderness. :( Evidence of the char continued all the way until about a mile from Charlebois.

I had been up to Bull Pass before, but hadn't descended the east side, nor hit the Black Top Mesa summit. The summit is a real gem, with fantastic views all around. There is a nice flat spot for a camp on the southern tip which would make for a great viewing location at sunset/sunrise, with Weaver's on display. After returning, I read about some Spanish hieroglyphs, but didn't know to look for them. Another time.

On my way down from Black Top Mesa, I was treated to a lovely rainbow off to the north. Definitely the visual highlight of the day.

Descending from Bull Pass, I clipped through the upper end of Needles Canyon, where I'd been previously after some solid rain. As with other washes, it wasn't really running, but there were lots of pools.

I continued on to rejoin the Dutchman trail. Originally, my plan was to loop back north along the Cavalry trail, which I haven't done before, but the draw of getting the Charlebois Spring and covering that section of Dutchman proved to strong, and I ended up heading that direction.

It was nice to be out of the burn area, and the sporadic cottonwoods along the creekbed stand testament to the stronger water sources in the area.

Charlebois, as always, is a lovely oasis in the Supes. No one camping there, and I again made a mental note of my desire to do so one of these days.

By that point, I was 10 miles in and realized I needed to hightail it back, as I had to pick up my wife from the airport by 3 pm. So, I turned on the jets and abandoned any thought of the Cavalry loop on the return, and instead opted to follow Dutchman proper from the eastern Bull Pass junction.

The trail through this section of Dutchman was brushy, and with the rain, ended up soaking me thoroughly. No matter. It wasn't cold and I just embraced the wet. This section also avoided the fire scar.

Saw a snake in a tree (looked like a garter) and several small orange frogs, but didn't have time to get my phone out--and with everything wet, I probably couldn't get it to respond to my swiping anyway.

The final several miles from the Black Mesa Junction back to FW were a grind. In the last couple of miles, I finally saw signs of life with one single hiker and a couple out for an afternoon jaunt in the Parker Saddle area.

Back to my car, I headed back towards Mesa just in time to get my wife's text that she had landed. Headed straight to the airport and arrived just as she was exiting the terminal. Perfect timing!

Was eyeing a Meetup for Marsh Valley Loop. However, the numbers scared peeps away and the event was cancelled. I was then able to convince 2 friends to do this plus the high point. 😎

Met 1 not far from me at 7. Start hike at 8:30. So we did the Black Top Mesa outing. There is no sign for Bull Pass and is a bit out of the way to find. This is where it gets steep & rocky. The use trail from there has cairns along the path. Was surprised to see 1 other hiker descending from the high point.

Instead of going back the way we came, we looped it. Props to @trekkin_gecko as his triplog inspired this outing. Much of this route is chill but at the end u have to climb back out 2nd Water. 🫤

Another jaunt into the superstitions, hitting another loop that I recalled being a favorite of mine back when I hiked the area more extensively with its prominent views of Weavers Needle from various vantage points. A mix of old and new with a detour out to the top of Black Top Mesa (stunning views as ever), Aylor's Arch and the summit of Palomino (both new visits for me).

Got a slightly later start than I wanted to since I delayed my alarm clock in favor of getting a bit more sleep. The drive out First Water road was uneventful, with a handful of cars observed at the first parking area right off 88, another handful at the Canyon of the Waterfalls parking lot, none at the Massacre Falls/Jacob's crosscut lot, and a handful of vehicles at the road end.

The morning started cool, with my first few miles in shade or low angle sun - it was sad seeing all the fire damage, but there are definitely areas within the fire boundary that were less damaged or even seemingly unscathed. Fresh growth is already appearing on plants where the fire didn't burn so hot as to sterilize the ground. Scared up several bevy of quail as I walked through the undamaged/less damaged areas, and startled several desert cottontail at their breakfasts.

As one might expect for an area frequented by lots of people including horse traffic, the trail can be severely eroded in places - and as I was recently reminded, many hikes in the western superstitions tend towards the rocky side. My feet weren't thrilled by the end of the day, but the hike was worth sore and tired feet.

The hike out Dutchman trail started off in low desert scrub but quickly entered the burn zone where the fire seemed to stay in the First Water creek drainage. Eventually, as the trail climbs up and out of First Water creek, Weavers needle becomes visible. Unfortunately, the siphon fire traveled throughout the West Boulder Canyon complex and much of the vegetation is burned through this section.

Before heading up towards Black Top Mesa, I took a detour over to Aylors Arch - the turnoff is marked by a large fire ring, though there isn't a distinct path leading off the main trail, it's easy enough to route find into the arm of west boulder that leads around to the base of Palomino. Once in the drainage, there are occasional cairns leading the way and eventually you'll see a break in the left side with a use trail leading up towards Aylor's Arch. The climb up can be a bit steep...and it gets even steeper if you opt to aim for the top of Palomino Mountain. The fire cleared out much of the brush, making the approach much easier. The views from the top of Palomino were fantastic. The descent, however, was treacherous, with a lot of small shifty ball-bearing like rocks underfoot, so if you go, make sure to proceed with caution.

After my detour to see the arch, I returned to the trail and made my way up to Black Top Mesa. Sadly, the mesa took a lot of fire damage, but there are still some healthy saguaro on top in addition to a section of jojoba that seems to have escaped the burn. The views from the top of the mesa are spectacular. I had no idea that there are petroglyphs present on the mesa, so didn't try to find them - I'll have to return again another time to do so.

After spending some time taking in the scenery, I turned around and started making my way back towards the First Water trailhead via the Black Mesa trail, while making sure to turn around on occasion to take in the views of Weaver's Needle. Sadly, the area that the trail passes through took severe fire damage, with swaths burned clear to the ground and the area now resembling moonscape. Eventually, the trail hits a junction with Second Water Trail, and while there are burned areas, this trail appears less affected. Unfortunately the large cholla forests that I remember seem to be no more 😢

People: lapped 3 out of the gate, then crossed paths with someone headed to the top of Black Top Mesa while I was on my way down, saw a group of equestrians from afar as I was crossing the west boulder canyon drainage on my way up towards black mesa, crossed another coming in the Black Mesa trail as I was headed out, then relatively close to the TH, saw two groups of backpackers - one possibly set up for a dry camp on second water trail, the other group was going to see how far in they could get by sunset (it was already mid afternoon).

Wildlife: Desert Cottontail, a variety of lizards, a couple different types of squirrels, possibly a cardinal, multitudes of quail and plenty of other birbs....

This is my first triplog, but after finding others so helpful in researching my weekend hiking plans I decided to add my own.

Got to First Water TH at about 7:30 AM. Took Dutchman out and passed a couple hikers near Parker Pass, but otherwise a quiet, cool morning with a light breeze. Trails were notably dry due to the lack of rain. This was the first time hiking Black Top Mesa, and the trail to Bull Pass and the summit were much better than anticipated.

Just after Bull Pass, we passed a few backpackers who had stayed overnight at the top, and raved about the views of Weaver's Needle. We were excited, although for a couple of us in our group this was the first longer hike we'd done in a while, and the miles and elevation were starting to show their effect.

After making it to the top, the views did not disappoint. Weaver's Needle was the obvious gem, but a new perspective on Battleship and others were also impressive. This is a really great viewpoint for much of the inner Supes.

After a quick break, it was back down and out via Black Mesa Trail. In hindsight, we should have done this clockwise, as the views going back Black Mesa are a bit dull. Passed a dozen or so more hikers on the way back to TH. Although a bit slower than in prior years, we all really enjoyed this hike.

Hike to Black Top Mesa incorporating the Black Mesa Loop in a clockwise direction. Passed Wally just after leaving the trailhead. That’s twice in a week! :y:

1145 start. Slept in. Got caught up in a good book before getting off my duff and and out to the trailhead. That probably worked out better, though; it was chilly and a bit hazy this morning. It was gorgeous in the afternoon.

Pressed for time, I didn’t take a break until Bull Pass. I debated turning around there, but decided I could get to the top and finish before darkness set in. Proceeded up to the top for those special views. Headed over to the SE corner to check out the petroglyphs, but the light wasn’t right. I couldn’t see anything. Returned to Bull Pass and took a second break for a very late lunch before returning to the trailhead on Dutchman.

Finished a few minutes after five and was rewarded with a spectacular sunset on the drive home. Great day on the trails on a gorgeous afternoon.

Got started a little later than planned, around 0900. Muddy, with lots of water flowing, and snow just above. Headed east on Second Water Trail, and by the time I turned onto Black Mesa Trail, I was in the snow. Lots of fresh animal tracks. Made my way over to Bull Pass trail then up to Black Top Mesa. Lots of snow up there, making for slower travel on the trail. Great views from the top. Slippery descent, then continued east. Cavalry trail had lots of mud in places. Tons of water crossings on Cavalry and Boulder Canyon. Second Water was muddy. Saw my first hikers of the day near Garden Valley. Temps stayed in the upper 30s—mid 40s all day.

Dese's Bday month hike, which is likely the longest of her nine year life so far. It's also the first time she's summited two in a day! Boulder Canyon is a series of hundreds of clear swimming pools currently. The crossings were still manageable without getting wet, but there's evidence it had flashed significantly. This seems to have made the route easier to follow, in addition to all the trail work that's been completed recently. It's greatly appreciated! :app:
