Was eyeing a Meetup for Marsh Valley Loop. However, the numbers scared peeps away and the event was cancelled. I was then able to convince 2 friends to do this plus the high point. 😎

Met 1 not far from me at 7. Start hike at 8:30. So we did the Black Top Mesa outing. There is no sign for Bull Pass and is a bit out of the way to find. This is where it gets steep & rocky. The use trail from there has cairns along the path. Was surprised to see 1 other hiker descending from the high point.

Instead of going back the way we came, we looped it. Props to @trekkin_gecko as his triplog inspired this outing. Much of this route is chill but at the end u have to climb back out 2nd Water. 🫤

Another jaunt into the superstitions, hitting another loop that I recalled being a favorite of mine back when I hiked the area more extensively with its prominent views of Weavers Needle from various vantage points. A mix of old and new with a detour out to the top of Black Top Mesa (stunning views as ever), Aylor's Arch and the summit of Palomino (both new visits for me).

Got a slightly later start than I wanted to since I delayed my alarm clock in favor of getting a bit more sleep. The drive out First Water road was uneventful, with a handful of cars observed at the first parking area right off 88, another handful at the Canyon of the Waterfalls parking lot, none at the Massacre Falls/Jacob's crosscut lot, and a handful of vehicles at the road end.

The morning started cool, with my first few miles in shade or low angle sun - it was sad seeing all the fire damage, but there are definitely areas within the fire boundary that were less damaged or even seemingly unscathed. Fresh growth is already appearing on plants where the fire didn't burn so hot as to sterilize the ground. Scared up several bevy of quail as I walked through the undamaged/less damaged areas, and startled several desert cottontail at their breakfasts.

As one might expect for an area frequented by lots of people including horse traffic, the trail can be severely eroded in places - and as I was recently reminded, many hikes in the western superstitions tend towards the rocky side. My feet weren't thrilled by the end of the day, but the hike was worth sore and tired feet.

The hike out Dutchman trail started off in low desert scrub but quickly entered the burn zone where the fire seemed to stay in the First Water creek drainage. Eventually, as the trail climbs up and out of First Water creek, Weavers needle becomes visible. Unfortunately, the siphon fire traveled throughout the West Boulder Canyon complex and much of the vegetation is burned through this section.

Before heading up towards Black Top Mesa, I took a detour over to Aylors Arch - the turnoff is marked by a large fire ring, though there isn't a distinct path leading off the main trail, it's easy enough to route find into the arm of west boulder that leads around to the base of Palomino. Once in the drainage, there are occasional cairns leading the way and eventually you'll see a break in the left side with a use trail leading up towards Aylor's Arch. The climb up can be a bit steep...and it gets even steeper if you opt to aim for the top of Palomino Mountain. The fire cleared out much of the brush, making the approach much easier. The views from the top of Palomino were fantastic. The descent, however, was treacherous, with a lot of small shifty ball-bearing like rocks underfoot, so if you go, make sure to proceed with caution.

After my detour to see the arch, I returned to the trail and made my way up to Black Top Mesa. Sadly, the mesa took a lot of fire damage, but there are still some healthy saguaro on top in addition to a section of jojoba that seems to have escaped the burn. The views from the top of the mesa are spectacular. I had no idea that there are petroglyphs present on the mesa, so didn't try to find them - I'll have to return again another time to do so.

After spending some time taking in the scenery, I turned around and started making my way back towards the First Water trailhead via the Black Mesa trail, while making sure to turn around on occasion to take in the views of Weaver's Needle. Sadly, the area that the trail passes through took severe fire damage, with swaths burned clear to the ground and the area now resembling moonscape. Eventually, the trail hits a junction with Second Water Trail, and while there are burned areas, this trail appears less affected. Unfortunately the large cholla forests that I remember seem to be no more 😢

People: lapped 3 out of the gate, then crossed paths with someone headed to the top of Black Top Mesa while I was on my way down, saw a group of equestrians from afar as I was crossing the west boulder canyon drainage on my way up towards black mesa, crossed another coming in the Black Mesa trail as I was headed out, then relatively close to the TH, saw two groups of backpackers - one possibly set up for a dry camp on second water trail, the other group was going to see how far in they could get by sunset (it was already mid afternoon).

Wildlife: Desert Cottontail, a variety of lizards, a couple different types of squirrels, possibly a cardinal, multitudes of quail and plenty of other birbs....

This is my first triplog, but after finding others so helpful in researching my weekend hiking plans I decided to add my own.

Got to First Water TH at about 7:30 AM. Took Dutchman out and passed a couple hikers near Parker Pass, but otherwise a quiet, cool morning with a light breeze. Trails were notably dry due to the lack of rain. This was the first time hiking Black Top Mesa, and the trail to Bull Pass and the summit were much better than anticipated.

Just after Bull Pass, we passed a few backpackers who had stayed overnight at the top, and raved about the views of Weaver's Needle. We were excited, although for a couple of us in our group this was the first longer hike we'd done in a while, and the miles and elevation were starting to show their effect.

After making it to the top, the views did not disappoint. Weaver's Needle was the obvious gem, but a new perspective on Battleship and others were also impressive. This is a really great viewpoint for much of the inner Supes.

After a quick break, it was back down and out via Black Mesa Trail. In hindsight, we should have done this clockwise, as the views going back Black Mesa are a bit dull. Passed a dozen or so more hikers on the way back to TH. Although a bit slower than in prior years, we all really enjoyed this hike.

Hike to Black Top Mesa incorporating the Black Mesa Loop in a clockwise direction. Passed Wally just after leaving the trailhead. That’s twice in a week! :y:

1145 start. Slept in. Got caught up in a good book before getting off my duff and and out to the trailhead. That probably worked out better, though; it was chilly and a bit hazy this morning. It was gorgeous in the afternoon.

Pressed for time, I didn’t take a break until Bull Pass. I debated turning around there, but decided I could get to the top and finish before darkness set in. Proceeded up to the top for those special views. Headed over to the SE corner to check out the petroglyphs, but the light wasn’t right. I couldn’t see anything. Returned to Bull Pass and took a second break for a very late lunch before returning to the trailhead on Dutchman.

Finished a few minutes after five and was rewarded with a spectacular sunset on the drive home. Great day on the trails on a gorgeous afternoon.

Got started a little later than planned, around 0900. Muddy, with lots of water flowing, and snow just above. Headed east on Second Water Trail, and by the time I turned onto Black Mesa Trail, I was in the snow. Lots of fresh animal tracks. Made my way over to Bull Pass trail then up to Black Top Mesa. Lots of snow up there, making for slower travel on the trail. Great views from the top. Slippery descent, then continued east. Cavalry trail had lots of mud in places. Tons of water crossings on Cavalry and Boulder Canyon. Second Water was muddy. Saw my first hikers of the day near Garden Valley. Temps stayed in the upper 30s—mid 40s all day.

Dese's Bday month hike, which is likely the longest of her nine year life so far. It's also the first time she's summited two in a day! Boulder Canyon is a series of hundreds of clear swimming pools currently. The crossings were still manageable without getting wet, but there's evidence it had flashed significantly. This seems to have made the route easier to follow, in addition to all the trail work that's been completed recently. It's greatly appreciated! :app:

haven't been out in the supes in a long time
this hike was on our list of possibilities
after negotiating a detour on lost dutchman road, we got going around 0715
temps right around 40 to start
did the loop clockwise
second water, boulder canyon, cavalry
instead of circling black top mesa on dutchman trail, we took bull pass to the saddle and then to the summit
one of my favorite spots in the superstitions for great views, especially of weaver's needle
we took a snack break and then john persevered in finding the sun petroglyph on the east side
finished the loop on dutchman trail
temps in upper 60s as we finished
not many people on the trails at all
water in boulder canyon and from recent rains in several other places
nice to be back in the supes with good company
thanks, john - good times

Neither one of us has hiked in the Supes recently, so it was time. We did a clockwise variation of the Marsh Valley loop ascending Black Top Mesa for extra credit.
A bit chilly at the start. Some frost here and there. Things warmed up after an hour or so resulting in excellent conditions for hiking.
Trails are in pretty good shape. Less vegetation than expected. Still damp from the rain last week.
The scenery is always good here, Black Top Mesa topping things off with great views all around.
We didn't see many people and no horses, just lots of reminders they frequent the trails.
Fun hike. Thanks gecko! :)

Just another one of those trips where stuff gets added along the way. The original plan was to hike out and back from the Boulder Canyon TH to Charlebois Spring via the Cavalry Trail. The three summits in a day idea materialized once I reached Second Water and thus my route changed some. Hiked sunrise to sunset with my total moving time at just under twelve hours. Most definitely hands on hips and some stumbling in the dark at the end.

nice route up to black top mesa, which offers great views.

My somewhat inexperienced hiking friend (who’s actually a pretty good hiker) was wanting something to fill out the entire morning. I suggested Black Top Mesa & Loop, with the option of shortening the hike to just the loop. Got started around 0630 and headed out on Second Water trail. South on Black Mesa trail, where there was one group of campers.

Another group of campers at the Black Mesa/Dutchman jct, where we headed east, then up Bull Pass, then up to Black Top Mesa. Lots of grass along the trail up there, where right on cue, a rattler surprised us. It was well hidden in the grass right on the side of the trail, a little too close for comfort. While Jill was deciding whether to faint or run, I took some pics and poked at it with a pole to encourage it to move away from the trail so we wouldn’t have to deal with it on our way back out. After I assured Jill she would survive, we took a break at the top and enjoyed the views.

Once back down, we headed back on Dutchman. By far the most boring part of the loop, as usual. Saw some hikers, but not as many as I thought there might be on a Saturday. Warm the last couple of miles. Nice day for this one, but I’m glad it wasn’t any warmer.

High Season in the Supes! I wanted to get in some miles and elevation, so I decided to hit Black Top Mesa, with a stop at Palomino first.

I slept through my alarm, but luckily my cat heard it and “reported a hungry” about 530am. So, I got up and set off to the First Water TH, after feeding my “alarm cat” first, of course.

My goal was to be a Parker Pass about 30 minutes prior to sunset. I missed that by an hour, but was still treated to a beautiful sunrise as I started off on the Dutchman Trail. There were a couple other groups heading out and 9-10 vehicles in the lot when I started.

The trail looks to be in better shape that it was the last time I was on there. The fire damage is still very evident at the beginning of the trail past the Second Water Trail junction.

There was still a little flow along First Water Creek and the signs of much higher water levels recently were still there.

I made it to Parker Pass and started heading down. The clouds had come in and it made for a darker day. The wind was gusty is some spots and calm in others. Both little branches of Boulder Creek were still running. Gotta love water in the Supes.

When I saw the red cliffs of Little Boulder, I made a off trail beeline to the creek. Water was flowing on this little creek as well. The trail up Palomino is very well defined now. Cairns a-plenty, too many, maybe. The steepness was still there too. I was huffing and puffing making my way up.

Once on top, I explored most of the little ridges that abound the top of this cool little butte. I did not make it out to the arch, as I always obey the law of gravity and enjoy remaining among the living still. After a good exploration and many photos, I started down. The recent rains made the typical scree chutes a little less slippery. Still steep, but no hard landings on my backside after slipping this time around.

I made my way over to Bull Pass and started up for stop#2 – Black Top Mesa. I met James and Jordyn Walworth going up. Great to meet you @walworthjordyn and James!

The winds were gusty on the windward side of the Mesa, but ok on the leeward side. I stopped at the usual spot – “The End”, the sun and other glyphs. I stopped and had a little lunch and soaked in the scenery. I really love the views up on top of this one. One of the best in the Superstitions for sure.

I made my way down and started back via the same way I came in. After seeing only 2 other humans my entire hike, started seeing groups of backpackers. 6-7 groups total. And, as I got closer to the TH, I started seeing day hikers as well.

A long day for me, but I succeeded in getting my miles and elevation. And, of course, I was able to catch some incredible views for sure. I took way too many pictures, but that's better than not enough.

Beautiful day for a hike to a new summit in the Supes. Though the FW TH was packed, I only passed 8-10 people by the time I met up with the Black Mesa Junction.

The trail is in great shape and I was pleasantly surprised to find just about every creek crossing on Dutchman bubbling with significant (for the Supes) flow. The only real climb of the day started shortly after turning onto Bull Pass. The turn off to the summit was not cairned, but easy enough to find thanks to the well worn side trail.

The summit of Black Top Mesa was very windy yet it still proved to be an excellent spot for a break. I've seen Weavers Needle from several different vantage points and I think that this one might be my favorite.

We weren't really interested in getting to the top of Black Top Mesa, there were some trails going around the mesa we hadn't done, so the goal was to hit these areas. This turned out being a figure-8 track where we Started on the Second Water Trail, jump onto the Black Mesa Trail, on to Dutchman Trail, followed by Bull Pass Trail, and finally picking up on Dutchman Trail to get back to the trailhead.

This was a good long hike

Warren invited me to a hike from First Water trailhead since he hasn't hiked from there much in the past. We decided on Black Top Mesa. He had never been there and I have not since 2009.
The temperature was warmer than expected, in the upper 50's, when we got started. We hiked through some burn along the way. The vegetation is bouncing back and fortunately there is not much catclaw encroaching on the trails.
The spur trail up to the mesa is covered in knee high grass. Enough people have hiked through it to make the trail visible most of the time.
We hiked out to the end of the mesa, enjoyed the great views, and poked around looking for glyphs.
On the return to the Bull Pass trail we crossed paths with a gentleman who forgot to wear pants. Once he saw us he slid a Tarzan like loin cloth in front but left the caboose exposed. Yikes!
As we got closer to the trailhead we encountered more and more hikers, runners, backpackers, and a dozen horseback riders in a single group.
Fun hike. :)
