Joe put together this collection of trails that I'd never been on.

We started at 62 degrees and sprinkles. Needless to say, the humidity was up.

We started and finished on two different sides on the Salidas Gulch Trail. This trail is by far in the best condition of all the trails we were on all day.

Next off to the Salida Connection Trail 9263 to hook up with The Salida Trail #93. Both of these trails are multi-use and steeply rollercoaster on mainly ankle busters. There are some nice views, but the ankle busters wear on you.

Past Beardown Peak, the views open up to the North and East. We turned around at FR 9419 and took a break for lunch at a boulder outcrop.

On the return trip, we took a couple of different tracks which were much more enjoyable.

It was great to be back on #95. Smooth trail, gentle grades, cool breeze, puffy clouds, babbling brook, chirping birds, quiet Joe.

We thought we would head north for a hike. We combined Salida Gulch - Long Loop and Lynx Recreation Trail #311 for a 7.2 mile loop. Trails were OK. Official Route for Salida Gulch appears to be dated. 2.8 miles into the trail the Offical Route seems to veer off into a wash. Don't go that way, but stay on the main trail (Trail #95) and continue to follow it. It will eventually come back to the GPS Official GPS trail. The Alternate route from gegstewart1952 has the most recent version of this track, so I recommend you downloading that track and using it instead.

I thought this would be a pleasant walk past some petroglyphs and a lake, then a separate spur-trail to a park-regulated hilltop ruin. I was partially right: pleasant walk past the lake but I missed seeing any petros and I ended up just bushwacking up the hill as part of the loop.

The little research I'd done made me think the trail passed the petroglyphs but going back now and reading a 2010 triplog indicates that's no longer true. Oh well. The trail is mainly on ridges, I'm guessing the glyphs are down in the gulch.

It was a cool and drizzly day and I hadn't been to Prescott for a while and I enjoyed the trail walk. As I was completing the loop I noticed I wasn't far from the hilltop ruin so I just bushwacked up to it from the east (there is a parking area and trail from the south). The National Forest folks have gone to some trouble to prepare the ruin for tourist visits by constructing a wooden viewing platform with some placards. The ruin itself is not great: maybe 10 collapsed rooms, overgrown so its a little hard to see anything.

Noticed several groups of people poking around in Lynx Creek near my parking spot. They were panning (gold?) and looking in creek side holes - must be stuff to be found.

Kind of a last minute plan, decided after I woke up to head to Prescott. Had the Salida Gulch area on the mind, and saw some maps suggesting Sevenmile Gulch could potentially allow for a bigger loop. Didn't really have a plan or do any research, though. Got to Ranch TH and jogged down to Lynx Ruin TH, then followed the road to Salida Gulch TH. Followed the trail up the bottom of the drainage to the spring, then found the junction for the connector down to Lynx Lake. Didn't know if this was an actual trail or just a line on a map, but since it was marked, I took it.

Got to the lake, now headed back toward the car, and decided I have enough energy for a diversion, so I headed through the culvert under Walker Rd to Sevenmile TH, and headed up. Didn't know this trail system allows motor vehicles, but only saw two motorcycles on trail so NBD. Lots of motorcycle trails heading off every which way, so didn't know if I was on the right trail, but figured eventually I'd hit the circle trail if I kept heading west. After a steep climb out of the gulch, hit a T junction, and headed north. After about a half mile I came upon the Ranch Trail connector.

Ranch Trail was a lot longer than I would've liked, but at this point I at least knew that this would bring me back to the TH, so that was nice.

Weather was good, just a few sprinkles while on the ranch/circle trail, and about as temperate as one can expect this time of year.

We started off along the east alignment of Walker Road and hiked northeast towards 311. Once we hit 311 we headed over to the dam and continued east to 94 and up the hill along 94. Once we reached the intersection of 94/95 we continued south along 95 approximately one-quarter mile, where we bushwhacked our way to Benjamin Gulch/Lynx Creek. That wasn't too fun but the 'trail' we were on hadn't seen much use so it was a decent bit of isolation. There are all sorts of side trails around this area and you can definitely choose your own little mini adventure if you just want to get outside for some exercise. Once we made it to the creek we crossed over the dam and up to Hilltop Campground and made our way over to 305. Once we were on 305 we hiked down to the smith Ravine TH where we decided to turn back around and make our way back to the car. As expected this area had hoards of people for a Saturday morning but I think we timed it fairly decently as the hoards were showing up later in the day as we were finishing our hike.

Lastly, we saw the beginnings of a wildfire in-between Black Canyon City and Anthem.

Hopefully in two weeks we plan to do something a bit more challenging and isolated.

We started this hike following a track posted years ago and found that things have changed up at the north end of the trail where development is encroaching, so decided to post our route. The trails are confusing enough so that having a track to follow is very helpful.
We paid our $5 per car area access fee and parked at the paved parking lot at the north end of Lynx Lake. Take Hwy. 69 from Prescott or Prescott Valley, go south about 2.5 miles on Walker Rd. and turn left. This area includes a store and cafe, lake access, picnic area, restrooms and drinking water. The fee covers access to all recreation sites in the area, including a nearby ruins site and gold panning area on Lynx Creek.
Hiking clockwise, the northbound section follows along Lynx Creek much of the way. Start on trail 445 on the east side of the parking loop, then briefly on 442, and then 444 which ends at the Gold Panning area. Continue north on the dirt road to where it ends at a parking area with a large sign. Cross the creek and look for Trail 9263. The trail is confusing in this area and there are several gates that must be opened and closed, but you should end up on trail 95 which meanders generally southbound. As it curves west, find trail 94 which goes steeply uphill and then gradually down towards the lake and the trailhead.
There are many young trees and bushes along the trails but not much shade, so an early start is best to avoid the afternoon sun. The trails have lots of ups and downs with many beautiful views from the high points. We also found many species of wildflowers, especially near the creek.

This trail starts at the mouth of Salida Gulch and follows the creek bed, loops around to Lynx Lake and back to the parking area. As you hike the upper portions of the trail it affords some nice overlooks of the surrounding countryside. We may see some petroglyphs.

After taking an 18 month hiking hiatus we decided to head up to get out of the Phoenix heat and try a hike. We've hiked around Lynx Lake before and thought we would try the long loop, 4.5 round trip didn't sound too bad since we're getting back into hiking.

We followed the directions, even saw some people actually gold panning near the said area, they must be a permanent fixture specifically for this hike right? ;) One exception we took to the directions were off of the 9263 trail instead of trail #93 it turned into 95 so we took that down to 94. I don't know if this was a section added after the original description or we went off on the wrong one but it was getting warm and after carrying my 9 month old in his hiking carrier we were getting a little worn. We missed seeing the petroglyphs, maybe we'll take the short hike next time to go after those.

Didn't see any wildlife along the way except for a couple small hornytoads and a giant ant hill.

All in all was a nice hike, but I think we're gonna be sore tomorrow.

Combined several hikes in Lynx Lake recreation area.

Started from Lynx Northshore and made Salida Gulch long loop to the east side of the dam: Trails 445 - 442 - 444 - 9401T - 95 - 94. Salida Gulch Trail #93 no longer exists. Upper part of it has been closed to prevent access to a petroglyph site by trail users, lower part became part of new Salida View Trail #95 which I believe is a full loop trail on the right (east) side of Lynx Creek. Salida Gulch - Long Loop hike is now 5.0 mi long.

From the dam went up along east shore of the lake to the small upper dam, crossed the creek there and returned to Northshore along west shore (Trail 311).

Drove to Lynx Creek Ruin trailhead from where hiked to ruins and back (Trail 301). I really tried to see something from the overlook platform, but found no trace of that ancient pueblo :)
