I started from the Broadway TH to get a little more mileage in. There is an actual trail that starts just past the fence, but it soon goes into the wash and from there it's all rock hopping, until it turns into bouldering. I was expecting at some point that it would transition to more slickrock since it seemed like that one small area seems like it gets posted by everyone. Several times I was considering turning around because it was more work than I was in the mood for.

Once I got to the waterfall, my first thought was that no way was I going to make it up that. There was an obvious route up, but it was too exposed for my comfort. I've been dealing with benign positional vertigo the last month or so, so that wasn't happening. I spotted a route to the left that was steep and loose, but not exposed. I got up to the top of that route and was near the top of the falls and ready to turn back when I spotted some petroglyphs. I was able to find a few clusters within eyeshot without having to go much further. That was enough for me. Maybe on a better day I might have been more adventurous to head up higher, but at this point my main concern was how I was going to get back down.

I took my time getting down, making my steps very carefully. Once I got to the bouldering part, I made better time going downhill. On the way in I was expecting the hike back down to be even rougher, but gravity helped me out. It's also easier to spot the best route from above working your way down.

I saw 3 hikers in the canyon on my way down and talked with them a bit. Saw a family on their way in about a half mile from trailhead and that was about it. a younger group at the trailhead was getting ready to head out, maybe to the cave.

This ended up being harder than I expected it to be, but I'm glad I did it and made it as far as I did. Everything was pretty dry, but I don't think I would have enjoyed hiking up the wash with any appreciable amount of water to avoid and make it even harder, or get my feet wet. and then the idea of being near the waterfall and wet steep rock was also a big non starter.

Nice route Hansenaz! Completed CW with side trips to The Flatiron and Ironview Peak. The ridge proper felt Grand Canyonesque a few times and was tougher than I expected. :o

Started from the Hieroglyphic Trailhead and hiked westbound to the Broadway TH and back. I cut it short going all the way to the Broadway TH. the trail at that section was pretty busy with hikers going to the Broadway Cave and I kind of preferred the solitude. I thought about going to the Broadway Cave on my way out, but once I got to the junction, I wasn't up for the climb in the heat.

Saw a small snake eating breakfast and later saw a coyote who was gone before I could get a picture. the only hikers were the Broadway Cavers and then the neighborhood walkers along Cloudview.

Started from lot 730 heading for peralta, took a side track on a two track that went toward the mountain climbed I rocks on right of wash to get a veiw, thats when I noticed the black line of clouds coming out of the west wind started picking up as I made my way up the rocks found a rock face with a bit of a overhang and tucked in just as the mountains erupted with thunder, hail started pouring out of the sky and bouncing off the ledges in a few short minutes it blew over and left a white coating especially in the highest elevations, decided to walk out still some light showers but by the time I neared the trail head it was sunny and 70 degrees again, glad I packed a good windbreaker and had my wide brim hat, it was a awesome hike.

Had the notion for awhile to walk out my back door and go to the park. Not likely on anybody else’s wish list. Started the neighborhood trails up the east side of the Silly Mountain complex, exited north at the last saddle before dropping down to the TH parking lot. Couple of miles of road walking past the barking junkyard dogs brought me to the Broadway Trailhead. The small lot was full, surprised by the ominous sign saying entering burn area but only saw about an acre of scorched desert. Couple of groups heading back to the parking lot before I went by the unofficial trail to the cave . The tread on this portion of the Lost Goldmine and Jacob’s Trail is terrible until just past the cave turnoff, no where to step except on the ankle busting rocks. Only saw one other hiker from the cave turnoff to LDSP , I complained to him about ruining my solitude :D . Enjoyed walking past the canyons on my right and looking over the East Valley to my left, extra nice having the sun at my back the entire time. When I approached Siphon Draw I called my wife for a ride back, based on her ETA went to the Prospectors View junction and took it and then Treasure Loop, timed it perfectly for her arrival. Now I can put to rest this idea about a walk to the park.

A stroll in the fringe on the Superstitions with Chris. The Broadway trailhead was outside of the renaissance traffic that so worked well. I haven't been up the Broadway Cave in a while and it was worth another look. We hiked to the cave early and got the usually busy trail out of the way before the swarm. Jacobs trail meanders back and forth which makes it seem long. The weather was nice and the miles were easy.

Picking up from last Sunday, I decided to go back to the western Supes and hike up to the Broadway Cave for the first time ever. To add some mileage, I decided to hike the Lost Goldmine Trail from the Broadway Cave Trail over to Cloudview Road. The last time I had hiked that section of trail was a good 16 years ago or so, and I remember it was a cloudy day in August after a monsoon storm. It was cloudy, humid and wet, not typical conditions you associate with the Sonoran desert. Today was also a little atypical in the sense that everything was very green. but it was very sunny and dry. Very different conditions from the last time I was there.

Wally agreed to join for this hike since it's Supes and he hadn't hiked this section of trail in a while, also. We were the 2nd car at the TH, and the first at the cave. Nice views of the area and the saguaro forest below from up there. Looks like a mine shaft was filled in at the back of the cave. The trail up looks like it braids off in sections, but those sections seem to fade off fairly quickly and are spotty at best (I learned this on my way back down).

Before we got to the Lost Goldmine Trail, the crowds were on their way up. Saw barely anyone on the way out to Cloudview and back and then the half mile to the car saw more hikers than anyone else all day. No wildlife to speak of, but got a few interesting pics of the bomber from Falcon Field and the crowds on the Flatiron and Peak 5057.

I led a group of six (counting me) on a loop which started at the west end of Cloudview Ave. We hiked north on Lost Goldmine Trail and then hiked Hog Canyon above the waterfalls and petroglyphs. We continued a short ways up the drainage north of Hog Canyon - this is the same drainage that feeds the waterfalls by the petroglyphs. From there, we made our way up to the ridge that forms a part of the Hog Ridge route. We then took the ridge east (and a little north) to the Superstition Ridgeline Trail. The Ridgeline trail brought us over to the path leading down Hieroglyphic Canyon. We hiked back to the east end of Cloudview and then took the road back to where we parked.

One of the hikers in our group suffered a severe headache w/ dizziness which caused progress up Hog Ridge to be slower than expected.

The GPS track provided by Hansenaz was most reassuring as we went up the ridge. For the most part, we followed his route, only deviating from it a few times. If possible, it's best to stay on the ridge. For those times when it makes sense to leave the ridge, we found it best (as did Hansenaz) to descend (only very) slightly to the left (north) and then return to the ridge at the earliest opportunity. There is significantly less vegetation on the top of the ridge and the footing is mostly better there too.

We also took our time descending Hieroglyphic Canyon. We were all fatigued at that point and the the terrain after leaving the Ridgeline Trail is fairly steep and loose. It's best to make sure of your footing so that you can descend safely.

I had a lot of fun on this hike, more so I think than if I had done an out-and-back using Lost Goldmine and Hog Canyon. Be warned though; this route is a lot harder than doing Hog Canyon alone.

Bring a lot of water for this hike. I drank almost all of the six liters that I brought with me.

I hope to lead a group up Hog Canyon in a few weeks, so stopped by the Lost Goldmine Trailhead (on Cloudview Ave) late on Sunday afternoon to check out parking and access. It was only drizzling when I arrived, and the trail looked good, so I hiked out to where the Lost Goldmine Trail intersects with the Hog Canyon drainage. I explored the drainage and its banks for perhaps half an hour and then returned the way I came.

There's parking at the pullout by the trailhead rock/sign which will fit two cars easily, though I would guess that three could be squeezed in (maybe bumper-to-bumper) if needed. Additionally, there appears to be a larger pullout just after the pavement ends on Cloudview Ave. It might be advisable for larger vehicles to park at this first, larger pullout that's encountered in order to make turning around easier. Shortly after the trailhead pullout, the road narrows considerably and looks a lot rougher too. I parked our compact car at the trailhead pullout and needed to do a Y-turn in order to leave. Had I driven the F-150, it would have been somewhat more challenging to turn around.

The initial part of the Lost Goldmine Trail is easy to follow and has some reassuring cairns along the way. It was wet when I did it, but even so, was not especially muddy.

As noted earlier, I hiked to the Hog Canyon drainage. The gate at the end of the jeep road is about 1.6 miles from the trailhead. This differs slightly from the hike description which indicates that it may be found at slightly less the 1.5 miles from the start. I would guess that the Lost Goldmine Trailhead has been rerouted slightly since the Hog Canyon description was written. Lost Goldmine zigs and zags a lot, but when zoomed out, the track that I ended up with showed that it goes pretty much north until it turns to the west.

Accessing the Hog Canyon drainage: There's a good path through the gate and then cairns to the left (west) leading into the drainage. However, a good path continues NNW along the bank for a short ways. It looks promising for a (short) while, but then becomes blocked by vegetation. I found it possible to continue by going over rock or through some vegetation, but it's almost certainly easier to just use the drainage.

I also went a short ways up the drainage; the section I saw required a bit of rock hopping as well as pushing past clumps of fountain grass.

I look forward to seeing more of Hog Canyon on another day...

Ever since Mike and I went up to the Ridgeline via the Monument Canyon Gap, I've been intriqued by peak 4102 which sits on the SE corner of the cliff band. I took a less-direct approach leaving Broadway TH and worked east below the Broadway Cave and around the back. It was rocky and full of cholla, so the going was slow. Once around back I got on a nice scree pile leading a good way up to the ridge. Once on the ridge the going was much quicker and the views were sweet!

I went around the east side of 4102 and had hoped to climb up to its ridge, but I felt pressed for time and with all the loose rock and nothing to catch a fall, I decided to play it safe. I explored and took some pix, then bailed down a drainage that went to the west fork of Hog Canyon. It was a long hike out and I got back to the car with just over an hour of daylight left.

It was a tough off-trail adventure but my curiosity is satisfied (at least for now). One day I'll go back and get on that little ridge!

Note: Distance and AEG are estimates.

I was 48 hours too late to see the waterfalls, but I assumed after this weekend's rain and hailstorms there would still be plenty of water puddled up in the canyon. Nope! The canyon is bone dry. The only water is in the pools where the petroglyphs are located. That made the going rather smooth. I'd say this canyon is easier than neighboring Monument Canyon when dry. I glad I didn't chicken out and not climb up to the second falls because the glyphs at the first falls are just sad. The ones at the second pool are way better. They're mostly zoomorphic shapes. The best ones are behind the tree that grows out of the second pool.

Superstition Loop or What were those 10 essentials again?

Last Bradley class the night before reminded that my life is seriously changing in the next couple of weeks. :o So I decided that my window of opportunity was growing thin. Decided to do this hike, but no shuttle to set up at 10pm. Wallyfrack gps track to the rescue. I hadn't been to Carney or any of the lower trails or done the ridgeline so I thought I'd combine them. 8) Got a pretty late start a little before 10am. Flatiron went pretty quick @ 1:13 min. total which surprised me as I felt like I was taking lots of breaks. Took a quick break to hydrate and eat and possibly donate my headlamp? See where I'm going? (More on that later)
Got cruising on the Ridgeline trail and got a good rhythm going until peak 5034 area (I believe) Anyway, I could not find a trail or cairn after ascending and getting to a high point. It looked like it traversed, but then I found myself downclimbing. I spent a good hour orienteeringly challenged. Going in the right direction just too high or low trying to get on track. Took another break to regroup and remove some of the nastiest biting plants I've encountered. There was mean plants I had never even seen before. :-k I did finally get back on trail on the next ridge, but wasted a lot of time, energy, and (water).
I was pretty tired by the time I got to the lost goldmine trail (My route back to the truck), but I was glad to be done. Total time to this point was 6:25 with a little over an hour of breaks. I felt like the worst was behind me. There were frequent yet small showings of flowers along the carney and goldmine trails. Bruce would be happy that at this point I didn't care and took very few pictures. I notice my water was getting rather low by cloudview (first of the 10 essentials)and I knew I had quite a few miles left since I could see flatiron and it was a good 3-4 miles as the crow flies. I met a nice couple taking their nightly walk who gave me directions to their house and told me to fill up at their spicket. Never underestimate the kindness of strangers. :y: Now I could eat because I didn't want to waste my fluids digesting stuff before I had a water source. Got back on trail, but the goldmine trail was a lot rougher here and I had already banged up my feet pretty good. (I will have 2-3 less toe nails by the end of the week guaranteed :o )It was also starting to get dark. Slowed down quite a bit. By the time I got to Jacobs crosscut it was dark. I had already spoken to my wife and let her know I was running late. Decided to take the last break and yank out my headlamp. :o Checked my pocket no lamp. Checked my bag thinking I threw it in the pack with garbage I removed from my pockets earlier no luck. I did have my phone which has a pretty bright led as backup. The moon was pretty bright and I slowed down and did the rest of the hike in the moonlight occasionally using the phone in some of the tough spots.
I definitely learned some stuff on this hike that I will be applying to future endeavors. :D

Did a little trailblazing this one. Wendi picked it from her stash of descriptions, we chose over the one that starts at Cloudview just because 3 miles didn't seem worth the long drive. In it, at one point it just says follow the contours of the mountain. Nothing screams trailblazing louder than that so I forewarned Wendi about "Her" hike. I ended up enjoying more than she did, this one could probably even have it's own trail description but I feel like this being my first time in this area I might be missing some of the gaps.

The night prior I went over the topos (and satellite views) and decided on two possible routes. I had a favorite in mind but it looked like it could cliff out. I decided that if I got to the base of the hill that was preferred route and found the trail was ducked/cairned going through a valley between two hills (Secondary route) then I would assume somebody knew better than I and follow that one. Well that is exactly what happened, but first there are few other tips for anyone looking to do this hike so I'll start at the beginning.

Hike starts at Broadway TH, on Jacob's Crosscut where it cuts north is where the Lost Goldmine trail picks up which continues east. Eventually the Goldmine crosses over a barbed wire fence through an unmarked gate. It continues east following the fence line. It crosses two washes and once passed the second wash comes some sort of dirt road that lollypops at the fence line. This also acts as an alternate TH for Hogs Canyon(I think) There was and ATV parked here when we came through. NOTE! The trail looks like it continues on the south side of the fence but in fact our trail crosses the fence right here at the top of the lollypop. There's a gate of sorts just remember to close it behind you. I am not certain if we are still on Goldmine or not because I have seen some tracks continuing on the south side of the fence and cornering south to the south end of Cloudview Rd. Our Trail continues east following the fence line one the north. It is at this point my trail description I was following says follow contours of the mountain. Eventually the fence line corners but we continue on following a well cairned trail east. I say that, but I lost the trail on the way in but kept to my game plan of heading for the base of the hill at the mouth of the valley. It ended up that was where the trail headed anyway.

We follow the cairned route past "A" route. The trail looked more like one of the many game trails running through here but just with cairns. We ended up loosing the cairns again on the next hill and just made our own way. Everything worked out but once we got within eyeshot of the Hieroglyphics we could see that our hike was exploding with people. It made having to cross the wide wash and the climb out, and the whole hike for that matter a little less desirable. We were committed though and went on, though we ate lunch before we got to the top. There seemed to be a lot of echoing, and barking, alot of barking.

We regained our spirits while eating, we could see that more people were coming back than going up. Eventually we would see a serious looking basset hound go by nose to the ground, I am almost sure he was our barker.

We went finally went up, and it did not disappoint. The rockart was cool and so was the back canyon. I had scanned for the entry point of my original route and though there was no trail I knew it would not be a problem exiting that way. So we went off trail just up trail from the last set of cliffs and headed to the west side of the canyon. We notice some rock art on the way out on the last set of cliffs, you wouldn't normally get to see them without the off trailing. The return route was much faster and more direct. I recommend that over our approach , I will post my route.

I parked at the Cross-Cut TH and looped around Superstition Mountain.

I started off on Jacob's Cross-Cut trail to the Lost Goldmine. The mansions on the Cloudview were a buzz-kill.
There were two new un-official trails off the Lost Goldmine. I ran into a guy who told me that the mountain bikers put them in and they just loop back to the jeep roads.

At the Peralta TH, I took Bluff Spring to the Dutchman to the First Waters TH. Then I took FR78 back to the Jeep.

I saw a big group of backpackers near the Peters / Dutchman intersection. It was some REI outing.

The weather was perfect the entire day.

This hike offers wonderful views of the Superstition Ridgeline and a unique view of Dinosaur Mountain (is that hikeable?). It makes a nice stroll if you live in the far East Valley, but I wouldn't go out of my way to hike here.
