It is a long distance to walk for not amazing rewards, in my opinion, but I was along for the hike planned by friends training for R2R, so that is a reason to do this hike. Otherwise, I think it would be more enjoyable to split it up into different loops versus slogging through.
My favorite trail out of those traversed was by far east end with its beautiful views and complete lack of traffic. After starting on Tom's Thumb with all the crowds, it was so nice to go on east end with nobody. Windmill and Coachwhip went quickly with little elevation change and also very little crowding. Dixie Mine and Sonoran had more traffic already, and Promenade was full of people. Most people were gone when we headed on the Andrews Kinsey connector, with us only seeing a few small groups. The crowds returned in full force when we hit the Sunrise trail, and continued for the duration to the Sunrise TH.
It was a beautiful day for a hike! A bit cooler than I expected which was nice.
We did a shuttle for this hike leaving one car at Sunrise TH (which I didn't realize only opened at 702a. We were there at 645a and had to wait along with 6 other cars.) and one car at Tom's Thumb TH. |
