 That was a barn burner! :) I've been thinking about this hike for a few years and finally completed it in the rain today. I'll admit that thesnake lit a fire underneath me to get it done. Thanks for the TL @thesnakefromthelemma. I completed it the easier direction though, so I'll have to go back and hike it south to north like he did. One thing this hike reminded me of was that Sunrise is a really wimpy peak compared to the rest of the McDowell Mountain range. : wink : Much of this route also was familiar to the Torote Loops in the Sierra Estrella range. Could be a five star route except for all those god-damned jets overhead constantly!

This route is an alternate route to go from Tom's Thumb Trailhead to Sunrise TH as compared to what is listed in this guide. It takes many trails. It is a long distance to walk for not amazing rewards, in my opinion, but I was along for the hike planned by friends training for R2R, so that is a reason to do this hike. Otherwise, I think it would be more enjoyable to split it up into different loops versus slogging through.

My favorite trail out of those traversed was by far east end with its beautiful views and complete lack of traffic. After starting on Tom's Thumb with all the crowds, it was so nice to go on east end with nobody. Windmill and Coachwhip went quickly with little elevation change and also very little crowding. Dixie Mine and Sonoran had more traffic already, and Promenade was full of people. Most people were gone when we headed on the Andrews Kinsey connector, with us only seeing a few small groups. The crowds returned in full force when we hit the Sunrise trail, and continued for the duration to the Sunrise TH.

It was a beautiful day for a hike! A bit cooler than I expected which was nice.

We did a shuttle for this hike leaving one car at Sunrise TH (which I didn't realize only opened at 702a. We were there at 645a and had to wait along with 6 other cars.) and one car at Tom's Thumb TH.

Got a new xpogo stick. Decided to hop across the MSP. Reviewing my route I confirmed having only touched the ground 24 times on the day, which might be a record.

Fun new people, got a little warm toward the end and I was the only one that opted for the peak. How can you hike 16 miles and not get a peak? Some people are weird!

First attempt to do "Tom's Thumb TH to Sunrise TH". Only got to the 128th Street TH, but it was still 13.45 miles. Didn't eat enough (only 800 kcal), but more importantly, got a blood blister on my left ring toe that took up half the pad.
