Planned to do Josephine and Hopkins peaks, but didn’t quite turn out that way!

Started from Madera Canyon, plan was to do Josephine first. At Riley Saddle we turned off and got a little ways in before calling it. The brush was insanely thick, no way to make it currently that I could see and I was trying to follow the HAZ track.

So we abandoned that summit attempt and headed for Hopkins, taking Super to Agua Caliente, and at the point where we were closest to the Hopkins road, we took a little, steep, unnamed path straight up to it, then hiked the road to the summit, having lunch on top.

We headed down the summit road a short distance then bushwhacked down the steep mountainside to rejoin the Agua Caliente. There was nothing really to follow there, though we did stumble onto game trails a couple of times for a little ways which helped. We then headed down Agua Caliente to Vault Mine Trail to Old Baldy, back the short distance down to the trailhead.

Weather was perfect, and we saw a number of deer and some birds. Great but tiring day!

First time on Hopkins and Carrie Nation. We started up Vault Mine to AC saddle, and then up the ridge (where there's not really a trail, but it's mostly clear) to the road. The views along the route/road and at the summit are amazing. We got unceremoniously told to leave though on account of road construction - apparently there's heavy equipment going up and down the road and a pedestrian (or maybe a cyclist?) was recently injured. The trail down is steep and brushy, but obvious. Great day in the Santa Ritas.

Water at Carrie Nation mine, lots of birds.

Hot and humid was the order of the day, even at the trailhead at 6 AM it was in the low 80's to start. Stayed overcast and 80's to low 90's for the entire hike, didn't feel like a typical Arizona hike. The drive in takes a bit of route finding, but not too bad. The last bit of dirt road to the trailhead is pretty bumpy and I wouldn't want to drive anything with low clearance. Perfect terrain for my Subaru.

The idea for this hike stemmed from a hike Pivo did last month and I've been mulling it over. His route is pretty much spot on and we followed it all the way up to the top of Mt. Hopkins. The lower half of Agua Caliente up to the saddle is full of poison ivy and other scratchy things. Made it less than a mile in shorts until I stopped to throw on the lower half of my convertible pants. Once on the off trail portion of the loop, our navigator needed to pay close attention to the route on his phone, but it's faintly obvious how to get to the top. Just enough cairns to keep you in check. Popped onto the road and was almost immediately stopped by an employee of the Smithsonian asking us what we were doing. Told us that he normally chases people off, guess there is a sign further down the road dissuading people from coming up right now. But he was impressed that we bushwhacked up via Agua Caliente and never saw the sign. Said we could continue up to the top as long as we didn't linger and hightailed it off right away.

Made a detour further down the paved road to the more widely used trail that connects back to Agua Caliente and then returned to the car. Didn't feel like bushwhacking down what we just went up.

Hit the trailhead at 7 and there was barely any parking left!

Beautiful morning. Saw a big owl on the way up. Went up Carrie nation. Forgot how steep this ascent is. Boy howdy it goes up! The use route off Agua caliente to the road up Hopkins is in pretty good shape. It was glorious on top of Hopkins this morning.

Took the squatches route down Hopkins to agua caliente saddle. Had no major issues.

Came down vault mine. That definitely put my hip to the test.

After the remains of Mr. Smallwood from Ohio were found in the Santa Ritas, one of my Tucson friends hit me up for a chance to go check out the infamous ridge. I'm a fan of the Santa Ritas first of all, and have already explored two ways up Hopkins (the "main" route up from above Carrie Nation mine, and the old Jeep track from Josephine Canyon). Adding a third sounded fun.

A group of four of us started before 6:30am up Vault Mine trail, with a side excursion to the namesake mine. From the top of Vault Mine, we headed east towards Josephine Saddle, then took the social trail up to Mount Hopkins road. Power hiked the road up to the summit, enjoyed the view, and then headed the quarter mile or so back down to the ridge where the lost hiker's remains were found.

The ridge itself was very pleasant; in terms of vegetation, it was all quite friendly, and there weren't really any serious obstacles. One might be tempted to head down the gully, which is a mistake - stay on the ridge. About half way down, another ridge forks off to the right; this is the one you want. From here, there's actually trail the whole way down to Agua Caliente Saddle. As far as ridges are concerned, this one is actually pretty easy, but bring a topo map just in case.

Our group kind of splintered after this point; I headed over to Josephine Saddle by myself and went about a mile down Temporal trail, with a return via Super Trail. There's no shortage of options in the Madera Canyon area!

While descending from the peak via the route described, my cell battery died. I continued to follow the ridge but began sliding too far to the east and became somewhat lost. I decided I should turn around and climb back up the mountain. I passed a coiled rattlesnake and then stumbled upon the personal effects of a hiker who became lost in February, 2019 and never found. At the site were two hiking poles, a waist pack and one hiking shoe. I stuffed the pack into my back pack and continued the climb. I made it to Hopkins Road and a guy who worked at the observatory and who also had been part of the original search effort, loaned me a battery charger. Examining the contents of the pack, he confirmed it belonged to the lost hiker as there was a car key and a note having the man's name, "Smallwood" from Ohio. I found the site about half a mile from the road. Later I was interviewed by sheriff deputies and asked if I would lead a group back to the site, which I am happy to do, perhaps this week. I did not linger long at the site as I had my own issue to solve but did not notice any human remains.

The weather forecast was questionable in the afternoon but we decided to give it a go. From Madera we went up the Super Trail to Josephine Saddle. Then up the front side to the summit passing a few small patches of snow on the approach. A bit of wind on the summit but nothing that significant however the clouds started to get thicker as we took a break. After the break we headed down the backside seeing only two people on that stretch.

We reached Josephine Saddle again and this time headed up the Agua Caliente Saddle trail towards Mount Hopikins. By this time light rain started to fall but nothing too bad. Eventually there is a turnoff where a route splits from Agua Caliente and heads up the steep hill to the Hopkins road. Once on the road it's an easy stroll to the Whipple Observatory on the summit. I had not been up there in several years so it was cool to see the observatory again.

After that we headed down the only somewhat off trail portion of the hike. The sudo route follows the ridgeline down to Agua Caliente Saddle. It's mostly ponderosa pine so it's easy to navigate with almost no manzanita or scrub oak to deal with. At the saddle we picked up the regular trail and then over to the Vault Mine trail junction. From there it's about 2 miles down to the Madera parking lot on the Vault Mine trial which is one of the steepest constructed trails I've been on. Good hike with only minor on and off light rain and we got to see some new trails in the area!!

Frank, Niel, and I got a fairly early start from Saddlebrooke, and managed to be on trail from Madera Canyon by 9:00 a.m. We expected a hot day, but the cloud cover, considerable breeze, and cooler temps made the entire loop very nice. In fact, the drying sweat made it almost too cool when we stopped to rest.

The hike proceeds up the very steep Vault Mine trail, intersects the Agua Caliente Trail from Josephine Saddle and continues west to the Agua Caliente Saddle. From here, it is a semi bushwhack to the top, but a faint trail has been beaten in (wear gaiters) and cairns will appear sporatically. Once you reach the road, it's only a short hike up to the Whipple Observatory, which affords some of the best vistas in the Ritas, including some killer views of Mt. Wrightson, the other observatories on this busy mountain, and the serpentine road going down the mountain. The best place for lunch is down from the observatory level at an obvious, treed picnic area (with tables), flush toilets, and a small pond which has been known to attract bears.
There were signs at the trailhead to watch for bears, but we didn't see any or see any sign (scat) of any.

The trails are in good condition and the connector down to the Aqua Caliente Trail is not overgrown very much. You will not get mangled very much if you wear shorts. The most likely place you might get off track is at the point where you leave the road to take the connector down the AC Trail. I included a couple of shots that shows the departure point, which is at the most NE point in the road (a hairpin turn) behind a shed with some communication equipment nearby.

After a short stint (few hundred yards) to the east on the AC Trail, turn left and head down the Carrie Nation Mine Trail to the parking lot. Note that there is no metal sign at this junction. All in all, this is a fine day hike, with a great destination with killer views in every direction, a good deal of aeg over a short distance, a pretty good trail with minimal bushwhacking, and a chance to see the impressive, rotating, Whipple Observatory.

Frank, Niel and I thought it would be too hot to do this hike, but we went anyway. And it was georgeous. We started a little earlier than normal and temps were very nice after getting off Vault Mine Trail. Man, that is one steep trail, but is in great shape. One tip, go up it instead of down. It had been about a year since we did this loop and it is still a winner. The only difference is that what used to be a mild bushwhack up from the Agua Caliente saddle to the road is now a pretty clearly marked trail with cairns, etc. Nothing difficult about the bushwhack, just steep. There were signs of a bear, with prints and scat along the trail. So keep a look out. There is a good bit of water in the nice raparian area along the lower part of Carrie Nation.

Expect to see lots of birders along the lower parts of Carrie Nation and Vault Mine. Apparently, the birds are headed north and this is a frequent stop. I saw lots of binocs and expensive cameras and lenses. This is a great hike, highly recommend it. Great views from the Observatory; we could see the fire west of Rio Rico.

Nice hike up Hopkins. Bit of drama at first as a new member of the Alt (now called Baja Arizona Hikers) meetup didn't understand that the hike was outside her abilities. Another new person volunteered to do an easier hike with the slow hiker. The rest of us including two other new people had a nice hike at a great pace!

Guess I need to remember to also make every hike sound absolutely horrible when I post them!

Excellent day out with 11 friends. Fantastic hike with some steep elevation, a little off-trail near the top, all without long mileage. Just enough elevation to keep things cool all day. The only trick is finding the point at the switchback on the road down to connect back to the Agua Caliente trail. Go out to behind the storage building next to the microwave units and a look over the guard rail for a steep rocky path. It's not obvious.

No flowers along this track.

We opted for the Carrie Nixon return but it may be easier to continue over to Josephine Saddle and down Old Baldy trail. The one precaution is the ongoing construction to replace a one-lane bridge just after leaving the parking lot. We were held up about 15 minutes to allow a concrete pour. Mt. Hopkins is a great alternative to Mt. Wrightson, if you're getting tired of it.

What a weekend it has been! From the top of the Mogollon Rim to the top of Mount Wrightson. Two of my favorite places. Todays trip up Wrightson included a first (for me) trip over and up to the top of Mount Hopkins. This was a bonus and added a nice alternative to one of my all time favorite hikes.

Tricky Nicky got some new day glow green shoes that he kept trying to sell me on. Maybe if they came in some normal colors but no neon footwear for this boy.

Up on Hopkins there was a cool older dually truck that I thought about hot wiring. Upon looking in the window I realized the keys were in the ignition. :o That would obviously take all the fun out of it so I left it be. ;)

The hike down the Vault Mine trail is a steep one but was enjoyable just the same.

I look forward to doing this hike again sometime soon.
