Got an invite from Chums to hike up in the rim country. We both suggested basically the same hike, one that we've both done a few times before. He assembled a cast of motley rag-tag degenerates to join us. Tough_Boots (It's been 9 years since I last hiked with him), Kackln' Karl (Been a 1.5 years since I hiked with him) Johnny Speed demon (aka 8K) and Chumley as the Beaver.

Starting at the 260 TH we made our way west on the Highline Trail, 4.5 miles to the Drew Trail intersection. Some don't care for the Highline Trail, but I think this is a nice trail to start your hike in the morning. It rollercoasters its way over with some nice rim views.

The Drew Trail is an 800' climb in a bit over a mile to get to the top of the rim. It gets the heart pumping. We took a bit of a break up here to gather all the participants, before continuing over to the Woods Canyon approach to the lake. For those of you that ever wondered, "The Drew Trail #291 derives its name from the Drew family, early pioneers who homesteaded near Sharp Creek in Arizona. Prior to 1909, they constructed this trail to facilitate travel to Winslow, making it one of the region's oldest pioneer routes. The trail served as a vital connection between their homestead and the broader territory."

The up canyon feeder showed evidence of a low intensity prescribed burn the entire length. The grasses were turning green, snow melt had created numerous deep clear pools and there was still a smattering of snow left over.

Hitting Woods Canyon Lake we started seeing people enjoying the lake. There were quite a few less than a typical Saturday. After corralling Chums9L, we took a lunch break at the lake. The Stellar Jays perched very closely in the trees around us waiting for us to drop a morsel for them.

Continuing around the lake we said hi to my cousins, chilling high in their abode, before Kyle and I split from the group at the spillway. We took the less exciting route of the Meadow Trail + Rim Lake Vista before meeting back up with the group at the Military Sinkhole Trail. From here it was a 2.4 mile drop back to the TH.

Good times and great hiking again with the extended group of puerile misfits. The weather all day was pretty much perfect.

Bruce has been pestering me for years to invite him snowshoeing but with his busy work schedule it just hasn't ever worked out. So when he recommended we take advantage of the recent stealth snowfall on Monday, I called in and postponed my scheduled annual review at work. I wasn't sure if we'd have to hike up Sinkhole from the 260 TH or if we could find safe parking higher up. There had been no plowing off highway, but only about a foot of new snow overnight made it easy for us to make first tracks through the parking lot.

The only other time I put foot to snow in this area was a brutal day of misery four years ago where three of us alternated breaking trail through a couple of feet of newly fallen snow. We all nearly died and stuck to the boring Crook trail on an out n back.

Today the goal was to check out the canyon bottom, and despite not knowing what kind of flow we would find, opted to check it off first with the lake as the midpoint on the loop. Getting started it was apparent that all the flat land at the top of the rim is saturated and loaded with water. Heading downhill all that water consolidated into easily avoidable streams. The depth of snow is impressive and surprising. 30"-36" was the minimum, with sheltered draws and drifts approaching double that. For the first time on snowshoes in Arizona, I found myself cautiously avoiding tree wells and a couple of times fell into cavities around fallen logs or boulders that were not that easy to self-extricate. Thankfully, Bruce was always nearby to lend a helping hand. :app:

The deep snow made breaking trail slow. After covering the first two miles in a little over an hour, creekside travel slowed to about 1mph, taking over 3.5 hours to go the next 3 miles. Cause or effect? -- A LOT of photos were taken (sorry, I posted all of them! ) The place was sort of magical, and for most people, very un-Arizona.

As we approached the lake, the roar of the spillway could be heard and we were treated to the views of what we decided should be named Eagle Falls. Though the eagle closure doesn't begin for another week, we avoided the nesting area and opted against the full lake loop. Unfortunately no raptor sighting today as was the case along the snowbabe a couple of weeks ago.

Next was the quick traverse (lol, not!) over to the store and boat ramp for a break to rest weary legs before starting the long return trip. By depleted energy levels, a rational person would have turned around at least a mile before reaching the lake, but Bruce pushed on and my hope was that the second half of the loop would be easier. While it would not involve the normal relief of returning in the already broken trail we got there on, I thought perhaps there would be a packed trail courtesy of snowmobiles. Additionally, I figured that pavement in March would have accelerated snowmelt and maybe the route back would be clear by late afternoon.

LOL. No luck on the snow machines. Virgin snow everywhere. The pavement had been clear at some point in the past couple of weeks. But there was still mostly a foot of snow with larger drifts from the past two weeks of snowfall. And suddenly the clearing skies were quickly obscured by rapidly approaching dark clouds, snowfall, and thunder. Yay. The road walk is not exciting, but snow depth made it quicker, and more importantly, less effort. At some point poles were regularly clicking pavement and it seemed a fine idea to go without flotation. Ten minutes later, it was deeper again and trudging in boots was more exhausting than floating. Another change of footwear as the snow squall pelted us and thunder boomed.

Two hours to go the last three road miles back to the truck. That part wasn't exciting, but still some nice views of a place that isn't often seen like this. Snow and wind dropped temps into the 20s for the first time on the day. Back at the truck, tracks showed another vehicle had done a loop in the parking lot sometime during the day. It had been the FS, who shoveled out access to the bathrooms. Bruce offered to buy dinner so we headed down the hill for a celebratory meal.

With more snow forecast this weekend, I might just have to go again before this season comes to a close. Not sure if Bruce is ready for it, but Joe has been talking about wanting to snowshoe too. It should be great! :)

Revisited this loop from a couple years ago for the annual rim lakes hike before 300 opens. There was still a lot of snow all over the rim, and I'd guess it'll be a couple weekends before it's open. I do think it's open as far as to get to Woods Lake. Two Sixty start with Highline to See Canyon.

The water in Christopher Creek is running off strong. To cross near the TH someone cut down a tree spanning the creek. Heading up See Canyon the only wet crossing was at the See Spring drainage, but it wasn't bad. See Canyon Trail is in the most deteriorated condition I've seen it in five years of going. There is significant deadfall, and the trail is eroded in spots. There was tons of water except in the middle. Still good snow higher up around and above the big waterfall.

Took Bear Canyon down. Deep, hard snow mostly the whole way, but I wasn't really sinking in or sliding on top. Great flow of water. Saw a dozen turkeys on top by 300 and a coyote at the edge of the lake. Hung out around there before climbing out of the SE drainage. I didn't head up very far and instead climbed up where there was no snow. Got on the roads and walked back to 300. There's still big snow drifts on 84 and presumably the road to Bear Canyon Lake.

Carr to Carr Lake, broke in the company of the many harmonizing frogs. Straight from the lake down the easy terrain to Aspen, then to Boulder Hop. The west side of Boulder Hop is a road turned creek bed then a disappearing line in the grass. Pretty easy to navigate the Hole in Ground area without it. Gen Crook through the hole then I climbed back up to 300 to avoid the big pool that feeds upper Woods Canyon.

Trickling and a little snow in the upper canyon, great flow below the dam. The lake is at something like 101%. All the feeder drainages are pouring in. Pretty much had the place to myself, apart from some distant silhouettes. The spillway is running off like a waterfall, so I headed down. Didn't get far in Woods Canyon before bailing due to snow on the slopes I wanted to climb out on farther down. Cut corners back to Meadow then Vista before Sinkhole. Saw a couple cars on Meadow and two men on RV.

It's a fun challenge in April timing a rim lakes hike between the melting of the snow and the opening of FR300. Went as work permitted, and ended up going on the day 300 opened. Had The Rim to myself for most of the day. Wanted to loop Bear Canyon Lake and Woods Canyon Lake together and came up with this. Started at the Two Sixty TH around 8am and went clockwise.

Would have started at See Canyon, but I always save Highline for the end and wanted to give it a fair shake for it's best and most piney stretch. Mountain bike highway between the trailheads that winds between a brilliant forest of pine, fir, maple, and others.

See Canyon Trail had a little deadfall but wasn't as bad as last year. Water from Nappa Spring down and in the upper ~mile. some snow left in the canyon higher up but none on the trail. Decided to skip See Spring since it's familiar and there was so much else to see.

Topped out at FR300 and worked my way down Bear Canyon. Still a good amount of snow but nothing bad. Good flow of water. Just love it in that canyon, dense forest of huge conifers with interspersed meadows. Always a fun feeling seeing the lake at the bottom where the canyon opens up. Lake is full as I've seen it. Had it to myself and was going to walk round but decided to savor the south shore solitude instead. Left via the southeast drainage, which had less snow but a strong flow of water. Didn't hang around the bottom and worked up to the road SE and then up to FR84. Nobody on the road as I walked it.

Got down to Carr Loop which is not so much a trail but a road. Nice walk through the pines. Stopped at Carr Lake which was a nice stop, though won't draw crowds. Aspen Trail is similar but better somehow. Denser forest, the road is older or less maintained, so it feels less like walking on 300. Quite liked Aspen Trail but wasn't on it long before cutting over on Boulder Hop Trail to Gen Crook and the Hole-in-Ground area. Really beautiful area and probably my favorite part of the day. Beautiful weather for a break in the meadow and then off to Woods Canyon.

Woods Canyon is wider and easier than getting down Bear Canyon. Less snow, and there's a use trail the whole way down. Really scenic stretch of canyon from the road to the west of the lake. Planning on coming back and exploring east of the lake where there's a lot more to see. The trail around Woods Canyon Lake is in great shape with chevrons every so often. Really nice walk a couple hours before sunset. People were filing into the lake area, and I realized the road was opened. Rest of the trip was busy with car traffic.

Was going to continue through Woods past the dam and head to Sinkhole that way, but my feet were killing me. It's no shorter to use Meadow and Rim Vista, but those are less trails and more sidewalks, and I figured my feet would thank me. It's a really pretty section of open pine forest, but it was busy with car traffic.

Sinkhole was a nice way to end. Made for bikers, the tread is smooth and it's all downhill. It descends through the shade of pine trees. Got back down to the trailhead only having seen people in cars on the rimtop.

Great day of snowshoeing to Woods Canyon Lake. It was tough going in the fresh snow but we took shifts at the front breaking the track. It also snowed pretty much the whole day but we did have a break during our lunch at the lake. Coming back was much faster with our fresh track giving us much needed easy return to the TH. Lots of work but it was worth the effort to enjoy the winter wonderland!!

Absolutely exhausting day. Thanks to Karl for splitting the chore of breaking trail. No way I would have made it to the lake without your help with that. Took almost 5 hours to go 4 miles. Flat. The return time was almost halved (Woot! Kathy!!)

Wx was fantastic. Mid 20s. Snowed most of the day. Depth ranged from 22 at the th to 28 at the lake. Fluffy and soft. But serious work. It will be a couple of days before I can lift my legs. And still, I would do it again tomorrow. Ok, maybe Wednesday.

I was looking for a hike that wasn't too far away from the VOS and that was in a cooler area, and this one fit the bill!

The hike begins and ends at the 260 TH, which is right off of Highway 260 and is easy to get to.

This is a fairly easy hike -- the elevation gain is modest for the distance. You get most of the elevation gain out of the way in the first 2 miles of the hike, which goes from the 260 TH up to the Rim on the Military Sinkhole Trail.

I enjoy the portion of the hike that is along the Rim -- there are several lookouts that have really nice views to the south. A couple of miles or so are some easy off-trail hiking.

I saw a deer on the off-trail portion of the hike up on the Rim, and saw an Arizona Black while coming down from the Rim on the Drew Trail. The snake was about 4-5 feet off the trail and was shaking his rattle and was coiled up to strike, as if he was some sort of bada$$. I laughed at him and he eventually slithered away.

The day before this hike was our intended destination but a very strong wind changed our minds. So we went back today to try again. It was still windy but no were near what there had been. We started out at the Rim Lakes Overlook. Went to the lake, then the spillway and back. It was a really nice day for a hike.

Day 2 of 2 Rim Camping
Miss Ellie and I started our hike at a parking lot right off the rim. We hiked the Meadow trail to Woods Canyon lake and to the spillway campground. We then stopped back at the truck to get a bite to eat. I then decided to take the Rim Lakes Vista Trail to the East. We stumbled onto the Military Sinkhole trail. We took the trail about 3/4 of a mile down. I really liked this portion of today's hike. I found a place to stop and relax for a few minutes. Miss Ellie did not relax, she chanced anything that moved. We then hiked back up to the rim trail, and took it to the next parking lot. We then hiked back to the truck.

This is a figure 8 loop with the 260 TH, Bear Canyon Lake and the Carr Lake trails.

I started out at the 260 TH and there a group of hikers going up the Military Sinkhole.

The route I took was:
Highline
Drew Canyon
Aspen
Boulder Hop
Aspen
Carr Lake
- jump across to -
General Crook
FR208 - to rim
FR208 - to Bear Canyon Lake
Bear Canyon Lake trail
FR84
FR300 (bushwhacked away from the road)
Carr Lake
Aspen
General Crook
Meadow
- jump across to -
Rim Vista
Military Sink hole

It was a typical hike except for two things.

When I was going towards the rim (on FR208) I smelled a camp fire [-X . I came across a family hiking the other direction and they showed me a fire that they put out. They ground around a small pine tree was scored! The ground was still smoldering. They told me that a there was a some people camping in that spot the night before. The family was heading out to the Woods Canyon store to report the fire. I continued to the rim and upon my return, There was 3 forest service fire trucks dousing the area. One of the rangers questioned me. I told them what I knew and the ranger though it was a carless cigarette thrown out into the woods.

Driving through Payson , I pulled into a parking lot to grab a Mountain Dew. Suddenly two huge Elks were walking down the Beeline :o ! A pickup truck (with no doors) chased the Elk down a side street. The pickup had a retro 70's police siren. One Elk came back and stood still about 30 feet from the Jeep. The pickup came back and chased it down the side street. It was too dark for a picture.

The hike was fun. The temps were on the cool for the entire hike. Once the sun dropped, it got cold. I almost put a jacket on, but I held out until the descent down the rim. Then the temps got better.

I planned a nice, easy trail run for Sunday morning to accomplish a few things. First, to do my last long run before next weekend's marathon. Second, exlpore some new trails. Lastly, see the sunrise over the rim. I accomplished that and had a little excitement as well. More than 20 elk crossed the path in small groups with the last one being a massive bull that hung around for a while before disappearing into the forest. Did I mention it was 58 degrees when I started this morning? How nice is that.

We finally made our way up above the rim for a night of camping, hiking and running (of course). This was my first time to Woods Canyon... I know, I know, what took so long to get up there? Even though it rained off and on Saturday, I'll take 64 degrees and rainy over 112 in Phoenix any day!

Nice little hike from Mogollon Campground to Woods Canyon Lake and then back again. My GPS read 5.2 round trip. Used a portion of the Rim Lakes Vista trail to get from Mogollon Campground to the south end of the Meadow Trail.

Mike's never been to Bear Canyon Lake, so we did a hike to it.

As soon as we got out the truck the mosquitoes started biting! The trail was soggy at best, to swamp land! I've never seen that much water on the rim. There were creeks that I never know existed!
The cool part was that we saw about 20 frogs through the day. Some were bright green.

Our lunch at Bear Canyon Lake got cut short due to rain. The mosquitoes were so bad on the way back that we cut-over to the rim view trail to avoid them.

This was day one of our family Forest Lakes trip. We took the bikes and rode around the Rim View and to Woods Canyon Lake

Met Johnny Rocket in town, loaded up the rocket ship, and he launched us up North in a Tropical way.

This loop got thrown together the night before the hike. JJ says it's book worthy, I'll have to agree. It has a little bit of everything. Pleasant trails with vast views, interesting rock formations, old growth pine and oak, meadows, a lake, fauna, and snow cones. Even the off trail portion was on long ago decommissioned forest roads.

A lot of first time trails for me including this portion of the Rim Vista, Military Sink Hole, Drew, Aspen #441. I'll always love the views from the Rim Vista Trail. Sure, it's paved in spots and gets close to FR 300, but the views just keep you coming back.

We started on the Rim Vista and had about 15 minutes of a steady rain. It was overcast and the temps were quite comfortable. We dropped down the enjoyable Military Sinkhole Trail and caught the far East end of the Highline Trail. This really is a nice section of trail. At the Drew trail we made our only real steep climb for the day, climbing 800' in a mile.

Once a top the rim, we continued on the Drew for awhile, to the Aspen #441 and even the General Crook for awhile. The next part that I had drawn up, was the off trail portion to Woods Canyon Lake. This was the easiest off trail I'd ever done and it took us right to one of the western fingers of the lake.

As always the lake is just a darn purdy hike. This was really about the first people we'd seen all day. We stopped in the store, looking for just the right "Accessory" for Dr. Frick. No Luck. JJ grabbed a snow cone and off we went.

On the Meadow Trail, we got up close and personal with 3 elk.
See photos and the end of the Video for Dr. Frick's exploits. :next: :next: :next: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mn_z-7yrE3M

JJ....Thanks for the Joy Ride!
