Second one-off hike of the day. Probably a nice place to go if you lived nearby, but this park doesn't really warrant another separate trip to go back and finish off the miniscule Coyote Loop section. After finishing an activity, RouteScout still crashes when importing routes away-from-home.

Finally back in Arizona, trying to reacclimatize and get used to walking trails with lots of rocks. Decided to leave the neighborhood and traverse the Silly Mountain area going west to the trailhead parking lot using the north side of the trail system and returning east on the south side. Started on Superstition View Trail, very hazy right now. Only saw a half dozen other hikers though 9 cars in the parking lot. Had the summit to myself for the brief moment I spent there. Other than rabbits no other wildlife seen but was concentrating on keeping the ankles from turning on the rolling rocks :D .

Wanted to get a couple of quick hikes in on the east side. The first one was at Silly Mountain where all hikes are short and quick. Opted on taking crest on High Point trail today as that was my objective. Stared on Brittlebush briefly until it connected to Old Mine trail. This trail took me up to a saddle where the High Point trail got me to the peak. It was surprisingly a nice little scramble to the top. Icky enough to have it to myself, so I was able to take in the views without distraction. To make a loop of this hike I took Crest (briefly.....to be honest, Allen these trails are brief), to Huff n Puff, to Supes View to the Palo Verde trail to get back to the car. For as frustratingly short as these trails are, the trails and the surrounding views are not that bad. Saw some rabbits and that was it. Met 7 other hikers. Was hiking around 5:30am so the temps were cool and there was a nice breeze.

1st trip
I have had the Pinal County High Point on my Radar screen for a while, so I decided to head towards Tucson and add Pinal County to my AZ County High Point list. I have now done 10 of the 15 AZ county high pointers, and hope to get at least 4 of the 5 done in the coming months. I still have to figure out what to do about Mount Graham.

I drove down and took FR 29 from Peppersauce Campground for about 1.5 miles and parked. As it turned out I could have driven another 3/4 mile or so and parked at the junction with 29-4472-4475. I was fine with parking where I was to make a more legitimate hike out of it. I think that a 2WD vehicle with decent clearance could go about a mile from the campground, but if you went much further than that it would be better in a 4WD vehicle.

My route on the way up went from FR 29 to FR 4472 to FR 4483, which led up to Rice Peak. Then I did an easy off-trail descent down the north slopes of Rice to the Pinal County High Point. I then retraced my steps back up to Rice Peak and then back to FR 4483. This time, when I got the 4483-4475 junction, I took FR 4475 just to take a different route back. I believe that @chumley drove up this road when he bagged the Pinal Hi Point, and there were some steep, steep sections of the road, which would for sure make for an adventurous drive.

On my way back into town I was driving through Gold Canyon and decided to stop off and bag Silly Mountain, since I had never done it. There is actually a decent trail system through there with lots of trails -- where else can you do a 1.8 mile hike and be on 7 trails? I did a short loop and bagged Silly Mountain, and there were a number of other trails that I did not go on.

The mileage and AEG for the 2 hikes are as follows:
Rice Peak/Pinal Co High Point: 8.8 miles with an AEG of 2,949'
Silly Mountain: 1.8 miles with an AEG of 466'

The stats above are the sum of these two.

There were a few wildflowers in bloom on Silly Mountain -- quite a few brittlebush and globemallow, and a few creosote bush and Dichelostemma capitatum.

Made a loop tying a bunch of trails together. Somebody has to do these to balance out the diversity on HAZ. :D :y:

Quick hike with the boys before the heat hit. We were on the trail by 5:20 AM. Youngest (18 months) rode in the carrier for most of the way, walked maybe .2 miles along Superstition View. Oldest (3 years) walked most of the way, though he needed some help over the steep sections of Old Mine and High Point and was too tired to walk out the last half mile. Nice breeze for much of the hike, didn't even feel like 90 when we got back to the parking lot (the van claimed it was that hot, though). Oh, and the visibility was turrible this morning.

The park was a lot of fun. I usually take the boys over to San Tan for these quick outings, this was a nice change. It's free (yay!) and just challenging enough to give the oldest boy a hard time. Trails were well-defined and a bit rocky, nowhere as bad as the trail off of Broadway. The few other hikes we saw (maybe three or four groups?) were very friendly, too. Will definitely be visiting this one more often.

Did a Loop on the Way back from a Scouting Trip to Queen Valley. Haven't done Silly Mountain before and I decided that I really needed to go ahead and get some kind of Hike in... ;)

Used HAZ Tracks for only the 2nd Time. After 20 Minutes of dinking around with it in the Parking Lot, I finally got it to stay ON and away I went. Seems like it worked fine after that.

Nice quick little Hike with a Sweet View of the Supes...Hope to start getting out there regularly starting with the New Year...We'll see what the Doc and the X-Rays say next Week... ;) It's been a long 3 Months... :? I could certainly feel that I haven't done much. That's going to change in a big way on Friday... :D

I decided to get BobP off the disabled list or out of retirement or wherever he's been by enticing him with a pair of peaks he hasn't previously climbed! Claire and Kyle decided to join us. :y:

Storms made for dramatic views from the Silly summit, and there are enough trails to link here that I'm surprised that Mazatzal and The Eagle haven't been out here yet.

Once we finished a quick summit loop Claire really wanted to do 9L so we headed over that way. We spent some time playing around the base, but it started to spit and we decided it wasn't worth trying to finish. Things got a little wet and we had to abort. We may be the first to attempt 9L and not make it. ](*,)

We cleaned up and headed for BRI. Nice day out there. Good to see Bob back in the game! :)

BRI is a stupid name. Glad I'm not a vegan because the menu was lacking. Chicken Sando was good. War paint was better than 480G. All that was after this amazingly challenging hike :y:

Roadside Benchmark (a.k.a. Silly Mountain) has been on my to-do list almost forever and although I'd think about it every time I drove by, I always thought someday!

Well, this morning it was the first thing that came to mind so I figured I finally knock it out. To be honest, the main reason I kept putting it off was the number of times I read about vehicle break-ins at the park in the AJ newspaper. That along with all the signs posted about not leaving valuables in your vehicle as well as knowing of two separate individuals who actually saw their vehicle broken into from up on the trail yet could do nothing to stop it... one time there were even other people in the parking lot who simply turned away... I see nothing! (like Schultz on Hogan's Heroes)

So... with plenty of tools, CB, DVD player, 12V cooler and such in the Jeep along with liability-only insurance, I never felt comfortable taking the gamble. Well I did today, hustling through the hike just to get it done.

While I may have been a bit paranoid about it, since my Cannondale bike was stolen from a locked vehicle I would rather take my chances with rattlesnakes than tweakers seeking loot to pawn.
:M2C:
Almost forgot, one video...
Silly Mountain summit panorama

Sorry about the slightly jerky video... I simply can't hold the phone as steady as I can with the Canon camera.
