I chose Skyline from a few hikes Kelly threw out as options. A bit of a drive but good to get out here annually. We followed a route, for the most part, we had done a few years ago.
Lots of miles and AEG to be had if you have the energy.
Temps were cool with a moderate breeze. Great hiking weather.
Lots of jets flying out of Luke today. Noisy but very cool to watch fly by.
Thanks, Kelly, for navigating and lunch. Like Denny you rock! :)

Lung burning black out climb up Pyrite followed by terrifying descent. Almost flipped over the front on two of the steep tight switchbacks. Bailed on the summit trail. Can't wait to return and try again :) Stopped to chat with a couple in a sweet 2003 Safari Trek from British Columbia Canada. Recent trail maintenance on Pyrite, it's in very good condition.
Started from the parking area midway between the park entrance and the main parking area. Rode up the connector trail, through the main parking area and across the bridge. Did a clockwise loop on Mountain Wash, Turnbuckle, Granite Falls, Pyrite, Chuckwalla, south on Granite Falls, and then took the jeep road back to Mountain Wash to skip the climb back up Granite Falls and Turnbuckle. Returned to the van on my original route.

Led a Meetup. Ended up with two participants. Both were happy to add an extension. Sweet, Pyrate trail and peak here we come. This made for a full loop around the park.

I had previously done all of these trails and peaks. The loop idea was still new. With how difficult it is to get peeps out here, doubt I'll post this destination again.

Met with the Harem (Carey, Yolanda) at Skyline this morning for a hike out the Pyrite Summit. Saw many hikers on Mountain Wash and Turnbuckle segments, but only 3 hikers and a Park Ranger on the rest of the trails. The Park Ranger was installing really nice, new stainless steel trail markers. Temps were way warmer that I was expecting.

Early morning hike out at Skyline Park. Very overcast this morning which caused a beautiful sunrise. I was able to appreciate it as I drove out there, but the show was pretty much over by the time I got to the park. I did take a couple of pictures just before entering the park, but they don’t do the morning glory justice. Got on the trail just after 6am. Took the Turnbuckle out to Granite Falls and then Falls out to Pyrite. The pyrite is one of the more removed trails in the park, but it is only about 2 miles to get to its start. In my honest opinion, the Pyrite is one of the nicer trails in the park. It quickly turns into a single track and gains elevation with a series of gradual switchbacks. There are also some nice stretches of relative flatness, (allowing you to takes in some views without huffing and puffing) as it makes its way to Pyrite Summit trail. (50m). I didn’t hit the Summit today just doing the loop. Steep descent down the backside, which makes going clockwise a no brainer for me. At the bottom I took the Chuckwalla out wide to the east. It crosses a lot of old roads and ATV tracks as it makes its way back to the Turnbuckle. (I’d like to come back here some time to check out all the roads, just to get a feel on how they all interact). Took the Turnbuckle up the backside. Very eroded!! The trail is still easy to follow, but the smoothness that was there at its creation is gone. This section of the Turnbuckle is very steep and the water took advantage of the man made path. Once again I did not take the summit trail at the ridgeline. Instead I took the Mountain Wash trail back to the TH. Great weather today! Fiery sunrise, but very grey (and cool) for the hike. Wildlife was minimal - 3 rabbits. Only encountered two bikers and a dog Walker.

Kelly wanted to put this hike on our list. It remained there just one day.
Lots of rain for 18 hours before the hike, and it rained most of the drive out, but conditions were excellent once we got underway. Cool with a moderate breeze. A few light sprinkles.
Clouds and fog enveloped the peaks. Petrichor permeating our senses. Barrel cactus beaming red. Route Scout announcing the distance to the Skyline shltter (thanks Bruce). What's not to like?
We hiked the main loop clockwise. Only saw a dozen other hikers.
Fun hike. Thanks Kelly. :)

john and i had this on our list, and it was a good choice for today given the recent rain
copied @the_eagle's track and mostly followed it
we especially enjoyed the waypoint for the skyline pumpkinter
got going around 0700, clockwise on the loop
hit all the peaks: pyrite, valley vista, crest, javelina and watson
took skyline crest instead of lost creek and hit another little high point off trail along the ridgeline
fun hike, good variety, mileage and aeg, trails in good shape
fog rolling over the ridgelines was cool to see
the bright red barrel cactus after rain look nice
didn't realize i had been on crest summit, and javelina once we got near the summit
it's been awhile
thanks, john! good times :)

I have wanted to check out this park for a while now and i finally got the chance. Followed the big outer loop from Linda, Joe and Denny's trip out here a few years ago. Hit 4 summits - all with very nice views and different feels.

I was impressed with this park. Lot of fun trails out there and nifty summits to keep you busy all day

Had been to this park once previously in 2019. That was a Meetup outing where I continued out beyond anyone else. Upped the ante further with this trip.

Grand tour across much of the park, up several peaks. We turned around a bit shy of the 4th peak due to light concerns. Encountered a couple delays in getting started. May return for a diff outing to finish Javalina Peak.

Been trying to log this one for a while. Decided to hit the four summits of Skyline Regional Park. Headed down Quartz Mine Trail and down Tortuga and over to Javelina Summit. We back tracked our way to the Skyline Crest Trail and hit the summit real quick. We continued on Skyline Crest and went up Turnbuckle to the Valley Vista Summit. We then cut to Chuckwalla and started the trek up Pyrite. At the top of Pyrite right before the Summit trail we met a guy on a horse, we both went on our ways after a small chat. We went up Pyrite all the way to the Summit and then headed back down to meet the Granite Falls Trail. Headed back to Turnbuckle and then back to the truck for some much needed cold water. Was disappointed when I got home that the delivery service was not able to pick up my beer, I was really looking forward to it. Great hike with some good AEG.

Really have been wanting to explore Skyline more so I headed out at 5:45 this morning. Really enjoyed the switchbacks up to the Pyrite Summit. Enjoyed the Sunrise for a minute and headed on down. Will need to piece together more hikes at this park.

Working my way around the Phoenix metro area doing winter locals’ hikes, today was Skyline Regional Park’s turn.

I did the Pyrite Summit loop clockwise: The climb is more gradual that way, 650 AEG over 1½ miles (an 8% grade), whereas counter-clockwise is 550 AEG in only ¾ of a mile (a 14% grade), even with plenty of switchbacks.

Rain was expected off & on through the weekend in Maricopa County, and it was steadily drizzling as I headed out. 🌧

Skyline Regional Park’s trails are well laid out, and well maintained. Probably better than any other park in Maricopa County. You never have to worry about your footing, not even crossing a wash, so you can spend your time looking around, rather than staring at the ground. (Though the scenery is not the greatest, unless you are on a summit.)

Other than the Pyrite Trail, Pyrite Summit Trail, and the bit of Turnbuckle Trail on the west of Valley Vista, I had previously hiked the trails on this loop. I started hiking at 8:30 a.m., and made the turn onto Pyrite Trail 30 minutes later.

If you see an antenna on a peak just south, that is some sort of aviation beacon, not Pyrite Summit. I suspect the beacon is for Luke Air Force Base, as pairs of F-35 Lightning IIs headed south over it all morning long. Even in the rain. Probably headed out to the Goldwater Range, south of I-8, to play in the box. ⚡️

*** Correction. I just looked at a Flying Flyver set, and it's just an old wooden signal tower, no longer in operation.

Pyrite Trail reaches its high point at the junction with Pyrite Summit Trail. If you look back, you can see the Pyrite Trail winding back down into the valley, with the trailhead in the distance. You’ve come all this way, no sense skipping the summit!

Pyrite Summit Trail climbs 200 ft. in a ⅓ of a mile to the summit, which is marked by a cairn and one of many numerous marker poles. I should have checked for a geocache, but blanked it while enjoying the view. (And a trail beer.) 🍺

Despite not being very prominent, Pyrite Summit has some solid views, particularly to the south and west, across flatter surrounding terrain. Though they do not show up well in my photos, I could easily identify Woolsey Peak, in the Gila Bend Mountains, Saddle Mountain and, of course, the Sierra Estrella.

After enjoying the Pyrite Summit views, I headed down the steep northern section of Pyrite Trail to the junction with Chuckwalla Trail. Other than a brief stop by the aging saguaro just north of Granite Falls Trail, it was a quick jaunt back to the trailhead.

I drove partway home on I-10, before exiting at 35th Ave. to head up to Indian School Rd. Just south of Grand Avenue, in Maryvale, there was a traffic snarl at an apartment complex where a bunch of cops were pointing long guns at someone. (Or one of the apartments.) Another cop came barreling down the turn lane as I cleared the area. I wonder what that was all about? Hopefully I captured it on my dashcam!

We did a near reverse of the grand tour loop I hiked with Linda and Denny in March 2019. The park was just over half full based on parking. It didn't pick up much throughout the day either. A fair percentage did the mut on a rope polka dance. Maybe two? mountain bikers and just a couple of low-key runners. Music sharing? was limited to one guy we figured we'd breeze by but he held well to a saddle. Everything still feels perfect in this park. West-Cali-Valley never disappoints. The unique Estrella view along with intriguing western views are worthy alone.

I was a little apprehensive about trying here, knowing that it could possibly be crowded. With a pre-dawn start and temps in the low 40's, there were only a hand full of cars in the main lot. about a mile or two in, we passed a group with 3 mothers and 5 or so 8-10 year olds. They were finishing up after a 5:30am start with their kids. Surprisingly, all in the group looked happy. On the Granite Falls trail, we never did see the falls. I'm not sure they exist.

First up was Pyrite Peak. Great views to the west and south. We continued our CW trek, loosing altitude, the sun behind the mountain and some warmth.

The saddle at the Valley Vista Trail seems to be popular and had the most people we'd seen all day. There was plenty of room to navigate safely through the 10 or so people there. At the Valley Vista Peak, we met a nice young lady (Karibou) and her German Shepard. She was quite impressed with Joe's Google rating. Swipe left for me. More good views here.

The third peak on the day was Javelina Peak. This was my favorite climb of the day. Steeper than the others and an impressive tread all the way up. the last 500' or so get noticeably steeper, but we saw a lady at the top with a small human in a backpack. This summit provides good views to the NE to the SE.

Overall impression of the park.
- The park was not too crowded and for anyone you came across, it was relatively easy to maintain at least 6'.
- The trails are wide and well groomed throughout.
- There is informative signage. I found that with the many, many trails out there, it was easier to consult the GPS for turns to keep on our planned route.
- Dog Friendly, we saw many, all on leashes.

Great temps (41-66), great trails for a "City" hike. Worth a try for any of you that are looking for something different, not too far away.

Back out to Skyline with the kids. Mostly full lots when we arrived at 0715, but I found an open spot right next to the start. Crossed the bridge, then turned left on Mountain Wash. took that west to Turnbuckle, then west on that. Turned onto Granite Falls and took that to the start of Pyrite. Lots of dodder along Granite Falls and Pyrite. Easy climb up Pyrite, the incline isn’t steep on this side, with good footing. Lots of cholla just before the top. We turned onto Pyrite Summit and took that up. Quick stop on the summit for a picture, then went back down a short distance to avoid the tarantula hawks. After a short snack break, we continued north on Pyrite, dropping steeply down that side of the hill. Turned right onto Chuckwalla and took that all the way back to Granite Falls, where we retraced our steps the last 1.4 miles back to the trailhead. Warm, and I’m glad we finished when we did. I’ll have to keep pushing the kids for earlier starts.

I wanted to get out and explore Skyline since reading the triplogs about it, and I'm glad I read the recommendations for Pyrite. Started about 6:15, so I got to see the sun slowly lighting up the ridges all around. Pyrite was great; nice views, and plenty of climbing but not too steep. There was a breeze from the southwest, so the views in the Buckeye area were clear for a long ways, and the pollution was pooled up in the Valley. After coming down from Pyrite Summit, I followed various trails to get over to Valley Vista, which also had great views all around. Thought about adding Crest, but it was starting to get warm (and I've had sadly few hikes with much distance since last summer) so I just finished on Mountain Wash. Pleasant desert scenery on all the trails, but the two ridges -- Pyrite and Valley Vista -- were my favorite.

We decided to check out the Skyline Regional Park since it is a fairly new park, and got pretty good reviews. It was rainy, so that added to the nice factor. We made a big loop of the west side of the park combining sections of:
1. Turnbuckle
2. Granite Falls
3. Chuckwalla
4. Pyrite
5. Pyrite Summit
GPS Route has been posted if you want to download it.

Got a bit of rain during the hike, and were hiking in the clouds in some sections of the hike. I didn't bring my med weight raincoat because I figured with a 40% chance of rain I would be OK. Not really OK, but hey! I have my trusty "Emergency" raincoat I always bring with me (a medium trash bag just big enough for me to fit in). After ripping a hole in the bottom of the bag, and pulling it over, sticking my head out through the rip I was good to go. My wife just shook her head (she did bring a raincoat) and mumbled something about "Time to take out the trash".

All in all a pretty nice place, trails are well kept and easy to follow. I think this is an ideal night-hike location. I think next full moon, weather permitting, I'll to a South loop, and get some night photos.
