I had planned to go up to Mount Ord today but my heel was hurting when I got up this morning so I decided to hike close to home instead.

From the TH, I first went up to Peak 3098, aka the West View Overlook. I then went out on the Promenade Trail with the intention of doing the Sonoran-Lower Sonoran Loop. When I got to the junction I was pleasantly surprised to see the new trail in the FHP is open -- called the Mesquite Hollow Trail.

This trail more-or-less parallels the Sonoran Trail for 1.5 miles, at which point it ends at the Sonoran Trail. The new trail has some moderate elevation gain, but the tread is super -- smooth dirt with hardly any rock in it. I think that I will be hiking on this trail some more. The trail has a nice sounding name, but I did not see even one mesquite tree. Methinks that it should be called the Palo Verde Hollow Trail instead!

The new trail will facilitate doing some loop hikes in the FHP. Eventually I think that another trail will be built that will connect the Mesquite Hollow Trail with the Quartz Trail in the Scottsdale Preserve. I look forward to that because it will make possible some longer loop hikes on the trail system.

I decided to stay close to home this morning and do this hike.

Before going on the Sonoran-Lower Sonoran Loop I first went up to the summit of Peak 3097, aka the West View Overlook.

For a change did the loop clockwise, and I think that I like it better in this direction.

I only saw 2 other people out on the trails, and that was when I was almost back to the TH.

Now that the temps have finally gotten cooler I decided to stay close to home this morning and do this hike. I did the loop CCW, and on the way back I added in a loop on the western loop trail and went up and over Peak 3098, aka the West View Overlook. This makes an odd looking figure-8 configuration.

This is the second hike in a row that Route Scout has performed as it should, and hopefully that trend will continue. There are no recordings going haywire and no audio messages saying "zoom zoom" or "speedy split". Import is working fine and map rotation continues to work flawlessly. The only minor issue that has popped up the last couple of hikes is that audio doesn't work when starting a hike; to fix it I have to force a stop and then restart RS. After doing that audio works as it should.

This was the first cool day in quite some time which made for an enjoyable hike, even if it drizzled for much of the hike.

I added a little extra to the loop by going out-and-back on the North Leg Trail on the way out, and then going up-and-over Peak 3098 on the way back.

I have gotten tired of hiking to Sunrise Peak from the Adero Canyon TH, so I decided to mix it up a bit today.

From the TH I made my way up to Peak 3098, aka the West View Overlook. I went up the south side and came back down the northside. Then I went on the Sonoran-Lower Sonoran Loop hike, doing the loop CCW. When all is said and done the hike looks like a figure 8 of sorts; hence, the name of this triplog.

The afternoon temps are still more like summertime than I prefer, but at least it is cool early the morning.

I decided to stay close to home again today and give this hike a try.

I did the loop CCW; on the way back I did another loop on the Western Loop Trail to add a bit of elevation.

This was a straightforward hike today: no snakes and no drama.

There is a lot of sun exposure on this hike, and I was looking into the sun for much of the first couple of miles. Thus, this isn't the best early morning summertime hike unless it is a cloudy morning.

I did the Sonoran/Lower Sonoran Loop CCW. I saw a couple of deer on the Lower Sonoran Trail, which are the first ones that I have seen on this hike.

On the way back I added a loop on the Western Loop Trail, and went to the top of Peak 3098, aka the West View Overlook, on the way.

I decided to stay close to home and do this double loop hike again. I also added an out-and-back hike on the North Leg Trail.

When I started going up the Western Loop Trail I noticed that work is progressing on the new Upper Sonoran Trail, which will hopefully be open before long. This trail will provide some other loop options in the preserve.

I normally go out for new years eve and skip hiking on the 1st. However, was rather sick and this was the 1st day I felt capable. The other person wanted to head to the McDowells. I then suggested adero canyon since neither of us had started from that TH B4.

Came up with a route of intermediate length. Met that way at 9:30. Felt chilly at the start with the breeze. Jackets off 2 miles in. Had never hiked North Leg trail previously.

Hit the high point when we were nearly done. Perf difficulty for us since she hadn't done anything major for awhile. Met some cute Doodles along the route.

This was a hike from the Adero Canyon TH in Fountain Hills that contained 2 loops: one formed by the Sonoran Trail and the Lower Sonoran Trail, and the other formed by the Promenade Trail and the Western Loop Trail.

From the TH I took the Promenade Trail to the Lower Sonoran Trail until it joined the Sonoran Trail at the boundary to the McDowell Mountain Regional Park. Then I took the Sonoran Trail back to the Promenade Trail. Once on the Promenade Trail I took the Western Loop Trail for its entire length, stopping off at Peak 3098, aka West View Overlook, on the way. Once back to the Promenade Trail, I took it back to the TH.

There was a very nice sunrise this morning, and there were enough clouds to nicely filter the sun for most of the hike.

This is not a bad double loop, and it has a decent elevation gain relative to the miles.

Kelly suggested hiking from Adero, which sounded like a nice break from Somo.
Pretty dark out there when we started, so we used our headlamps for a brief while. Seemed a little cooler than yesterday, but with a bit more humidity.
We started by hiking up Sunrise Peak then took Western Loop north making a loop out of the Sonoran and Promenade trails. All nice trails out here.
Ran into @dixieflyer on his way to the peak. Good to see you Wade.
Saw a baby tiger rattlesnake on the top of Peak 3098.
Coffee and breakfast for the birthday girl after the hike. Good times. Thanks Kelly. :)

john and i got going from adero canyon trailhead around 0440
headlamps for ten minutes
nice sunrise along andrews kinsey trail
shared sunrise peak with three other people
back on andrews kinsey to the western loop trail
hit the little peak at the saddle, then down to promenade
did a modified sonoran loop combo, cutting to lower sonoran trail on the north crossover
finished up on promenade
temps were fine with the early start
had a breeze at times and a bit of cloud cover
my mileage was quite a bit less than john's, splitting the difference
save/share aeg seemed low, using an average estimate on that too
this was a nice combo and i would do it again with the full sonoran loop
we ran into @dixieflyer as he was going up andrews kinsey to sunrise
nice to see you again wade :)
breakfast at dj's after the hike, home by 1015
thanks, john
good times!

I decided to stay close to home again and do this hike, which I haven't done in a while.

I got started at 6:00 AM and I was the second car in the parking lot. There aren't many people out on the trails these days in this area; I guess that all the snowbirds are gone.

On the way back I went up to Peak 3098, aka West View Overlook, to get some more mileage and elevation gain.

This appears to the the "year of the gnat".

There were a good many palo verde trees that still had flowers. There were quite a few buckwheat blooming on the north side of Peak 3098; but that was it for flowers.

I decided to stay close to home to check out the wildflowers. I have not been on the Sonoran and Lower Sonoran Trails since wildflowers started blooming, so I decided to check these trails out.

From the Adero Canyon TH I did the Sonoran Trails Loop CCW, by going first on the Lower Sonoran Trail and then the Sonoran Trail. On the way back I took the Western Loop Trail up and over Peak 3098, aka the West View Overlook.

As @johnlp predicted, the brittlebush has busted loose in this area. There are lots and lots of flowers blooming, but the brittlebush is dominant right now.

With some 90 degree temperatures coming this next weekend, I'd say that this week will be the peak for wildflowers in the area.

I decided to stay close to home today and see what the wildflower display was like. Flowers were better than what they were 10 days ago when I last did this hike, but they are not a "superbloom" at this point. Brittlebush are a no-show so far, but perhaps in another week they will be blooming.

On the way back from Sunrise Peak I decided to go up to Peak 3098, aka the West View Overlook.

Adero Canyon gets uglier everytime that I do this hike. I'd rather see strip mining than see the houses that are being built there.

Wildflowers Observation Moderate
In some places wildflowers were "substantial" while in other places they were "light"; so I split the difference and gave this a moderate rating. Poppies were the highlight, although fiddlenecks, lupine, and Dichelostemma capitatum had their moments.

Did weird route today after dropping kids school. Left my water in my car and didn't realize it until I got to Andrews-Kinsey. Dagnabbit. Took Promenade to Western loop - then went to border with MSP at Andrews-Kinsey sign - turned around - then took Western loop up to Peak 3098 - down the way I came BUT ... took the Mountain Bike route of Western loop (I don't see it as a linked trail option but it's 0.5) back to parking lot. Had never taken the bike way down. Cold but not bad with nice sun. Smidge of flowers: occasional poppy patch, rare lupine, couple large shrubs of chuparosa. Pretty much no one on trails until close to 9am. Insane construction. Been watching it evolve for years. More and more depressing. I remember doing a super :y: super super cool loop (was Feb 2015: https://hikearizona.com/x.php?I=4&ZTN=19553&UID=37215) before construction going Sunrise145th parking lot up to Sunrise - across Andrews Kinsey - and then down somehow into canyon and through neighborhood out to pavement and back to my car. So glad I did it while I could. The land is totally rebuilt in there now - like insane terracing lifting homes up out of canyon - walls of walls - very Fountain Hills vibe the terracing.

I started at the Golden Eagle TH and made my way to the Dixie Mine Trail. Then I took the Sonoran Trail to the Fountain Hills Preserve and did the Western Loop Trail CCW, going up to Peak 3098, aka the West View Overlook. On the way back I took the Lower Sonoran Trail.

It was a nice, cool, breezy morning for a hike. I am enjoying the cool days, but I have a feeling that warmer weather will be here soon.

Mid morning hike. The day before the wife had “teased me” that she might go hiking with me today. But when she got up she said she wasn’t feeling up to it. :( So I didn’t get out to the Adero TH until after 9am. The parking lot can hold around 25 cars and it was near capacity when I got there. Wanted to hit Peak 3098 which was the last (described) trail for this area. (There is also the Overlook Trail that takes off from this parking lot that doesn’t have a description yet. So eventually I will have to return to this area one more time to “get ‘r done”). That won’t be a problem. This is a nice area, with some nice trails and some incredible views to the east. The layers of mountains to the east is remarkable.

I took the Promenade Trail out to where the northern end of the Western Loop starts. Climbing from this end is the more challenging climb. I like to think of this trail as the “trail of a 1000 switchbacks”. A ridiculous number of switchbacks for its length. Unfortunately with all those switchbacks, people are starting to cheat and create “connectors” from one switch to another. I can see this becoming an ongoing issue for this trail. It was a good climb that got my heart pumping. Hit the overlook and enjoyed the views. Little disappointed. Four Peaks and Mount Ord looked fantastic from the Sonoran North Preserve on Friday with their snow covered slopes. Snow was still evident on Four Peaks and less so on Ord, but the views were surprisingly less striking than on Friday. Continued down the southern end of the Western Loop and then back to the TH.

Long drive for a short hike, but worth it. Always enjoy checking a new trail off the list. Weather was great! Sunny with temps in the upper 50’s. No wildlife.
