Little bit of a challenge to get to the TH today. There was a car fire on the I-10 which brought traffic to a halt and then Olive was closed so I had to swing down to Peoria to get by the construction. I like to get out there when the park opens but because of the obstacles I didn’t get on the trail until 5:30am.

Started from the Waddell TH. This shaves about 2 miles off this lasso. Did the lasso going CCW. The trails were in pretty good shape. A few muddy spots from last nights rain. I typically don’t stop at Willow Springs, but with the rain I wanted to check it out. There was a slight trickle coming down the canyon wall. I don’t recall that being the case on my other visits. Incredibly humid today with no breeze. I felt like the humidity was radiating from the earth. I was dripping sweat within the first mile. Only a few users out today….4 hikers and 1 runner. Wildlife included a deer, squirrel and an owl.

First, I'd just like to point out that it's named White Tank (singular, (since been changed by Admin)), but no biggie, people like exaggerating the amounts of things and size sometimes. : wink : Secondly, had to get some work done today before packing for the next canyon trip, so busting pumpkin was the order of the day. Two hours to the summit and then the bonsai descent (as in harmony, inner peace and balance). I followed t_g's meandering 2013 route, not bad, but I'd rather hike almost any trail in the Supes, rather then trek in the White Tank again (mainly because of the longer drive, I may eat crow on this point). Finally, I thought it was appropriate to summit Goldwater Peak today, the day after the Republican's mostly lousy election performance. Although, yesterday wasn't quite as bad as Barry's 1964 loss...

Second MTB ride on the clipless system. Nervous about crashing on the triple switchback climb. Made it around the 1st switchback, no problem. Didn't full commit on the 2nd switchback and fell to the uphill side, thank god, while still stuck in the pedals. Made a go at the 3rd switchback, got 80% around and chickened out, got unclipped, whew! Easier than I thought to get restarted on the hill. Hot sun this morning, but cool breeze was appreciated. Saw one other biker on Ford Canyon trail. Couple of cars in the lots around the park.

Toasty start to the morning. Ironically, the only shade was on the triple switch back climb at the back of the competitive loop. Saw one hiker and one jogger.

Got a late start at White Tank Regional Park this morning, but didn't mind the heat and there was a nice breeze. Did the comp track loop and then on to Gray Fox, Ironwood, Ford Canyon, Mesquite, back to Ford/Ironwood/Gray Fox. Saw a nice Roadrunner hanging out near my van.

First hike in the White Tank Mountains. Decided to take the loop counter-clockwise starting with Waddell, then Ford Canyon, and finishing with Mesquite Canyon. That was a good choice. Waddell is just a flat connector along the base of the mountains connecting the various canyon trails. Easy walking. Saw a horned toad which was pretty cool. It has been years since I last saw one of these. He posed for us and let me get several pictures. The Ford Canyon trail started out fairly level with just a gentle rise. This continued for a mile or two until we got to a scary looking warning sign saying that the trail beyond this point is hazardous! At first that seemed unwarranted, but then the trail started climbing. There were several places where the trail was steep boulders. Nothing too scary, but not something to try on a bike. The trail gained elevation quickly in this area and eventually ended up in going right up the granite waterfall.

For the next couple of miles the "trail" was really just the wash. It was either sandy or boulder-y and there were several little waterfalls along the way that had to be climbed. There were several places along the way that I thought that we were finally going to leave the wash but we kept following the wash. Yuck. Finally after way too long in the wash there was a real trail. Yay.

The rest of the Ford Canyon Trail was a regular trail heading up and out of the canyon and down the other side. Along this section the hillside was bright yellow with blooming brittlebrush. Very pretty. Also there were hedgehog cacti with pretty purple blooms. The cholla had buds that hadn't opened yet. After hiking down a ways the trail headed back uphill again. It leveled off once we got on the Mesquite Canyon Trail. It climbed a little at first, then gently went downhill. The trail got steeper in the last couple of miles. In the canyon it felt hot in the sun, but a lot of the trail had a pleasant cool breeze.

All in all a very pleasant day in a very nice area. Glad to finally hike the White Tank Mountains.

Not much at the bottom of the mountain, but once we got up a ways there was blooming brittlebrush and some orange and purple flowers.

Found out at the gate that there were multiple runs going on throughout the park. Did not run into any runners on the way up but once we hit Willow it was a different story. Saw four or five deer after just crossing into Willow. All runners were very nice and we were in no hurry so we let them pass! Great Morning and got done early enough to enjoy the rest of the day!

It’s great to be able to go knock out some miles on a whim. Kind of chilly but i warmed up quickly. Saw 2 coyotes on the way out of Willow Canyon and one on the drive in.

we threw out some ideas for today and john picked white tanks
i hadn't been out there in four years :o
we decided on barry goldwater peak via mesquite and got going around 0640
very windy when we got up on the peak; didn't stay long
returned via willow canyon
saw just a few people until near the finish
good temps, some high clouds and a nice breeze
almost ran out of gas leaving the park, then got caught in traffic where I-10 was closed at 43rd ave. : rambo :
had time for ranch market burritos before cardinals kickoff, so all is well :)
nice to do something kind of different - i've always liked the white tanks
good times, thanks john!

Kelly threw out some suggestions for hiking. This one stuck. Hard to believe I have not hiked in the White Tanks in almost a decade. There is no exit off the 303 for Olive, so we drove another mile north and looped back to get into the park.
We got started a little before sunrise to cool temps. The Mesquite Canyon trail has a nice grade as you ascend. It is never very steep. The use trail off of Goat Camp towards the peak is steeper and rockier. The trail is pretty easy to follow and is cairned. After a while the trail dumps out onto the road to the peak.
Once we neared our destination the wind picked up and was blowing ~30 mph on the summit. We hid behind a building, had a snack, and departed for warmer hiking lower down the mountain.
The return trip was nice. Trails are in good shape. We only ran into a few people until the last couple miles. Good times. Thanks Kelly. :)

1st trip
Presidents' Day 2021, I had had my second Covid shot just a couple days before. I thought I would take something a little less adventurous than my usual lonely wilderness trip; do something with people around just in case, you know. :)

I started at 7 am at the Area 9 trailhead for the Ford trail, and headed out, capturing a few nice pictures before the light got lousy. There are several Geocaches along this section as well, which was an additional incentive for doing this trip. I was amused by the map at the trailhead suggesting the section of Ford Canyon in the wash might be a little rugged, and the additional signs along the trail telling horses and bikers effectively, "I'd turn back if I were you."

The canyon was beautiful. Truly shows how the White Tanks got their name. I had to stop at every pond and take a few pictures. You only get one in my photoset, though. I leapfrogged up the canyon with a couple of women about my age. I would stop for a picture or a Geocache, and they would go by. They would stop for a short break and I would go by. Finally lost them at the last couple Caches.

At the first pass at the top, after leaving the canyon, there is a nice rock just off to the left of the trail overlooking the valley and peaks, and a good place to refresh. From there, I could here voices carrying more than 1000 yards away from the Waddell and Mesquite trails (remember this, you noisy chatterers). Then down 250 feet and back up to the end of the Ford Canyon Trail at its intersection with the ends of the Mesquite Trail and Goat Canyon Trails.

I turned right on Goat Canyon, and headed toward Barry Goldwater Peak. Eventually, a couple of cairns mark the departure of the way trail to the peak from the Goat Canyon trail. The official log calls this a jeep trail. Not any more. It is a faint singletrack. I put waypoints in my track for some of the cairns along it. You will see in my track I diverged from it for a bit; it is easy to do. Maybe the waypoints will help you stay on task. The cholla is a constant threat in this section.

Eventually you hit the road to the summit. I have to say the summit is a little disappointing. Yes, from different vantage points, you can see forever in all directions. In fact, so forever the major peaks seem tiny. But the towers, the wires, and the noise from the A/C units, detract from the victory somewhat. I had my lunch on the pad of one of the towers. Forgot to look for the summit register.

I returned to my car via the Mesquite trail and Waddell trail. The farther down I got, the more people I saw. Probably altogether saw 45 people on the Mesquite Trail. The lower I got, the more they were huffing and puffing. I was astounded by the fences put up to protect the trail from people cutting switchbacks. I have never seen this before. It shows just how ill behaved some people are who hike this trail.

I'll give this trip 4 stars. Five stars for Ford Canyon and two stars for Mesquite Trail and the summit.

There is evidence of recent rain. The Ocatillo are just starting to green up. There is quite a bit of green grass. The flowers should be out soon.

My first time hiking out in the White Tanks! I'm a native, but never found my way out here for one reason or another. :o
So I dipped my toes in the pool by doing this shorter loop hike. There were plenty of pools to dip your feet in by the way! I really loved the spring on the Willow Trail! Saw a rattler hiding in a bush near the Mesquite and Willow junction.
I hiked the loop clockwise by doing Mesquite first. Mesquite Canyon seemed boring to me, but Ford Canyon and Willow were much prettier! Good hike and I'll come back and do other trails in the area! Maybe the Summit!
PS: So many people when I got back to my car at Noon. Everybody here to watch the waterfall! Go early and avoid the crowds! ](*,)

Kind of disappointed by the weak amount of flowers. Some poppies, brittlebush, lupine, and mallow, but very sparse.

Another perfect hiking day in AZ, temp in the mid 50s, breezy and sunny. My daughter, Amy, and I hiked clockwise around the 8.5 mi loop. The Mesquite trail is well maintained and marked. The trail starts up pretty quickly after leaving the parking lot (at Ramada 7) and after climbing 1600’ in about 4 mi you reach the highest point on the trail. From that point it was mostly downhill on a portion of the Ford Canyon trail then Willow Canyon trail. Both the Ford Canyon and Willow Canyon trails are pretty rocky and not as well maintained as the Mesquite trail. The hike took about 3 hr 50 min, which included a 20 min lunch stop.

Adding to my list of all-time uniques, I made my first ever visit to White Tank Mountain Regional Park (the west side's very own South Mountain! :y: )

Quite a bit of diverse stuff out here, from very intriguing canyons to large swaths of drab boredom. I made good time which allowed me to hit up the Waterfall trail before the "no excuses" entrance gate closure at exactly 8pm. I feel that darkness is an excellent time to see this desert spectacle, especially when in it's naturally dry state.

Got to see all the 2018 wildflowers. Pretty sure it's prime peak right now.

I was pleasantly surprised on this trip, and it seems to have earned a return visit sometime.
