I hadn't done a long hike in a few months, and since Joe hasn't planned anything crazy recently, I decided to get out for a longer hike in the Superstitions. I chose an old @LJW route that I'd my eye on for a few years that covered 25+ miles and hit four summits (Bluff Spring Mountain, Miner's Summit, Picacho Butte, and Coffee Flat 4621), with ~ 40% of the miles off-trail. Picacho and Coffee Flat were new ones for me and were the main attractions.

Peralta TH to Bluff Spring Mtn Summit
I packed ~3.5+ liters of water, a purifier, and extra gear for a long day and set out from Peralta by flashlight just before 6AM. I carried the bear spray in case there were any lingering rabid bobcats or thirsty cougars still prowling the Peralta area after the recent closure. I covered the first few miles in the dark, with stars overhead and a comfortable temps, and the sky was just starting to lighten as I reached the Terrapin intersection. I left the trail west of Bluff Spring Mountain and took a direct route up to the summit, arriving just before 8AM with beautiful views of the sunrise lighting up Weaver's Needle and the Goldfields. [ youtube video ]

Bluff Spring Mtn to Miner's Summit
From the summit, I hiked SE across the mountain and descended on Ely-Anderson, my first time on that trail. Steep, but fairly well cairned and not too tough to follow. I connected with Dutchman and left the trail after a short distance to hike up the N/NE side of Miner's Summit, a 'miner' bump on the route relative to the terrain ahead. I was on summit #2 just after 9AM and took another short break on top, with Coffee Flat Mountain looming to the east. [ youtube video ]

Miner's Summit to Picacho Butte
Coming down from Miner's Summit, I saw two guys at the saddle below, the first people I'd seen all day. They continued east on Whiskey Spring, and I passed them before leaving the trail and to start up the ridge past the Circle benchmark toward Coffee Flat. Views were fantastic from the ridge, and the route looked straightforward, though the final approach is deceptive from a distance with 4621 hidden behind a false summit.

I generally stayed west of the rock outcroppings along the ridge, and there were two steep uphill stretches. The toughest part was skirting around the west side of 4562, the false summit that's visible from a distance--that involved a lot of side-hilling on a very steep grade that slowed the pace, but I dropped down to a ridge leading to Picacho Butte. The were a couple small false summits along the way, and the high point is a little north of 4294 label on the map, but the views were great. I was on summit #3 at ~11:20AM, and it was very cool to finally be up there after seeing Picacho from below so many times over the years.

Picacho Butte to Coffee Flat Mtn 4621
I ended up improvising on the route to 4621--the route I was following went back the way I came and would've followed the rugged ridgeline that runs SW of the summit. It looked like that would require more aggressive side-hilling around some large rock formations, so I decided to try a more direct route at 4621, first dropping down into a drainage west of the peak...that added some elevation but looked easier and more efficient than another round of side-hilling. I found a spot to scramble down into the drainage and exit the other side...the climb was steep but worked well, and I was on top of Coffee Flat about an hour after leaving Picacho. Once again, great views in all directions with 4621 being one of the highest peaks in that vicinity. [ youtube video ]

Coffee Flat Mtn 4621 to Red Tanks Divide
I dropped down the SE side of the summit, which was steeper than I expected. There were a couple of especially steep, rocky scrambles going down, first leaving the summit and another farther down as I dropped into one of the drainages, which had some small pools and trickling water. The route eventually leveled off and wasn't too brushy on the way to Red Tanks Divide.

Red Tanks Divide to Peralta TH
Finally back on trail with ~11 miles to go, I stopped and filtered water at a nice pool south of the divide. Red Tanks Trail was easy to follow and not nearly as overgrown as I expected, so the miles passed quickly. I'd never hiked that section of Red Tanks and was pleasantly surprised by the scenery approaching Dripping Spring--flowing water, flowers, beautiful cliffs, and some fall color. I crossed paths with two people camped near the spring, and one of their dogs enjoyed following me and barking...I wondered for a while if he planned to stick with me all the way back to Peralta :). The impressive scenery continued along Coffee Flat Trail, and I stopped by Reeds Water before continuing onto Dutchman in late afternoon shadows and finishing off the loop a little after 5PM.

Summary
Fantastic loop, and one of the most memorable Superstition hikes I've done. I saw four people and two deer all day and covered a lot of ground...great sunrise and scenery, perfect weather, explored some new territory and visited two new peaks, and didn't pick up too many scratches. Good day all around :).

Headed to the Supes for a handful of summits I'd stared at in the beginning of the year. Wanted to loop Bluff Spring Mountain with Coffee Flat Mountain. I included Picacho Butte because it's right there, along with Miners Summit since it's on the way. Got started from Peralta an hour before sunrise and headed to Bluff Spring Mountain.

Bluff Spring to Terrapin to SW ridge. Got through the cliffs with minimal scrambling and only a little brush to contend with. It was very steep, but sunrise views over Weaver's Needle distracted and slowed me down. Preferred that ridge to the Ely Anderson Trail. The ascent was a fun climb and ridge walk, the other was a rough descent down a drainage and around the mountain. The route is well cairned but the grade is only good lower down, up high it's lost to the grass.

Dutchman trail passed the only folks of the day. Walked around the grassy backside of Miners Summit and decided to go up. It's steep but short-lived. Down to the trail junction and up Whiskey Springs to the saddle. Then I started the part of the day I was most looking forward to, the Coffee Flat Mountain ridgeline. Started with peak 3748. The views up there were some best of the day. The ridgeline started open and grassy but there was some maneuvering around the rocky ridgetop at times. A little bushwhacking and slow travel. There are three big ascents once on the ridge. Two are on the way to 4562. They are steep but there's really no bushwhacking.

Skirted around 4562 and went for Picacho. Surprisingly awesome summit, despite the added climb. It was cool to look over all the places I had been on the trails that wind through the bottoms of the canyons and over the passes in the labyrinth of rock we call the supes. Got back up on the high ridgeline which was tough. Went back for the sections I skipped and carried on for Coffee Flat Mountain.

There is a little peak on the ridgeline I had to climb and bushwhack around, but otherwise it's pretty straightforward. The final push to the summit is open and doesn't take long. The top is wide and flat and without going to the sides pales in comparison to the ridgeline. Went down the north ridge which is steep and a bit of a climb but there's breaks in the cliffs , so there's nothing too crazy. Down the first drainage and to Red Tanks divide. Circled back on Red Tanks, Coffee Flat, and Dutchman. One of my favorite hikes I've done in the Superstitions but a lot for one day. The Coffee Flat ridge on its own is an undertaking.

Hiking with Rabbits and Mountain Goats,
My Adventure in Wally World.

After Wally woke up a sleeping giant at our meet up spot, Dave, Joe, Wally and myself were on our way to the TH. Met Kyle and Vince at the Peralta TH. After JAG asked Kyle to move his truck and then called in for a ticket for another, we were off. The rabbits set the speedy pace and I had the trail to myself.

It was a brisk 28 degrees out and once the sun crested the horizon I was shedding layers down to a short sleeve shirt. The new Garmin Temp Sensor that arrived just 2 days before the hike, was in it's maiden voyage and working smartly.

We made the turn off of Red Tanks and and began our 4+ mile Off trail bushwhack to Picacho Butte and points beyond. Climbing the Canyon was thick and slow going. There were a couple of boulder climbing areas that tested these old bones. Wally led Kyle and myself up the short cut to the Peak (Read Steep and Loose). Before long the others joined us and we enjoyed lunch on the top of Picacho Butte. With the Cold Crisp air the views were vast and spectacular. Joe had synced up to my Temp Sensor at the beginning of the hike, so he went to check the temp at the top of the peak. He had no reading? I checked my GPS. No Reading? Then I looked at my pack to where the unit used to be attached..... CRAP! It got ripped off in the thick stuff.
The Last Time it communicated with the GPS, was here. 33.4267476294,-111.2943248358.

After lunch, we made our way over to "Not 4621". We climbed up to enjoy the views from "Not 4621". Wally and I went back down the way we came to await the other 4 going over to the real "Peak 4621".

A jaunt down the Coffee Flat Ridge and we were back to the Whiskey Spring Trail. Once back on an actual trail, the rabbits started running again. Kyle and I took a much more leisurely 3.5 MPH pace, while the rabbits disappeared from sight. I hadn't hiked w/ Kyle in a while, so this gave us a chance to catch up.

Thanks for the invite Wally, Thanks for the ride out to Peralta, good to hike w/ you again.

Another A+ Wally hike in the Superstitions! Hightlights for me: the narrow canyon leading up towards Picacho Butte (lots of fun climbs. too bad it ate Bruce's sensor) and the climb up to 4562 (reminded me of the Mother Lode). The off-trail stuff was kind of a drag after a while but necessary I guess. I'd like to do this one again except find a different exit route from 4621. Maybe down to the red Tanks Trail?

Thanks for driving, Bruce and Wally!

Wally had a plan to hit up Picacho, over to the high point of 4621 on Coffee Flat, then follow the ridge down. He went on a couple pre hikes to check things out too.

Hiked to La Barge Upper Box then took a canyon up to Picacho. The canyon was wicked cool in my opinion. It sure didn't feel like the Superstitions, especially this far west.

The valley is in the middle of a cold snap touted to be the coldest front to hit since 1983. Not sure if it panned out. It was cold. The lowest reading of the day was 28 degrees on a new temp sensor Bruce got for his Garmin. Which was cool but a little pricey at about $5 per mile, read his triplog for details.

After a wuss moment where I got scared on an icy ledge... Dave, Vince and I met up with the balance of the group on Picacho. We lucked out to the clearest views I recall. Nice fluffy clouds added the perfect touch.

Next it was over and up to 4621, the high point on Coffee Flat Mountain. We went up a wrong peak with sweet Mother Lode moments. The real peak isn't as exciting but checked it off.

The views heading back were outstanding. Only followed the ridge for a bit then headed over to #238. Thanks everyone for a great hike!

BTW... Preston and Denny look out! There's a new calm, respectable, non complaining roll model type in your neighborhood. GOYAAH's gonna getcha!

This was on heck of a hike. We started out in the cold-- it was definitely cold but fine once we got moving. We took Dutchman/Whiskey/Red Tanks out to Upper LaBarge where we would leave the trail and take a side canyon up to the ridgeline. This side canyon was really fun though there were a couple climbs I wasn't so excited about. We worked out way up the canyon for about a mile and then Bruce, Wally, and I decided to attack Picacho Butte directly. Vince, Dave, and Joe still wanted to play in the canyon a bit.

We finally made it up to the ridgeline. It was pretty easy going and we bagged Picacho Butte with no trouble. There is a seldom used summit register up there. We ate lunch assuming the most difficult part of the day was done. We headed out to go bag Coffee Flat Mountain. The ridgeline remained easy going for a while and then became a bit dicey-- a little more bushwacking and scrambling.

Bruce and I trailed behind a bit taking our time. We noticed the others climbing up an unnamed peak that should have been skirted so we followed suit of course. As we finished one of the most treacherous climbs of the day, we arrived to hear them laughing as they discovered they were not on Coffee Flat Mtn. Yeah... Bruce and I knew that.

At this point, I think we were all pretty much done with our adventuring and the real Coffee Flat Mtn looked so far away with some major obstacles in between. Bruce and Wally opted to stay. Vince, Joe, Dave, and I headed to bag Coffee Flat Mtn. If I didn't do it today, chances are I never would.

The route over to the summit wasn't anywhere near as bad as it looked and we were there before long. We rested a moment and headed back to meet up with Wally and Bruce to ride the ridge back down to the Whiskey.

The ridge heading back down was free and easy at first and then the lower you get, the more overgrown it becomes. Once we got about a half mile or so from the end of the ridge, it was pretty much every man for himself. Vince, Dave, and Wally opted to drop down all the way into the creek bed and take that to the trail. Joe and Bruce disappeared ahead of me and I think came down the east side of the ridgeline. I plugged away and followed the ridge all the way. The trail was in sight.

Everyone was pretty happy to be on trail again and we made our way back pretty quick. It was an awesome day. I'm glad I finally got up on that ridgeline I've stared at so many times. It was worth doing and the views are spectacular the whole time.

This had lots of hiking, a few miles of off trail, bouldering, canyoneering and a little climbing. The morning air was cold but once we were moving I was warm. We kept a good pace and occasionally stopped to keep the group together. The canyon going up to Picacho Butte from Upper La Barge Box is worth seeing but gets more difficult as you go up. The views from the peaks were great and worth the effort. The Coffee Flat Ridgeline is work so I'll pick an alternate route on the next trip. I think I told Denny I'd go again so 4621 will be mine that day. Bruce chalked up some serious Supes cred on this one, Kyle seemed to be loving it and hating at the same time, Vince thought he was in Disneyland, Joe takes on whatever comes his way and Dave never seems to tire but finally had enough of the off trail. Thanks everyone.

Great group. Nice to meet some new faces. Strong hikers, brutal route at times, but worth the view and bragging rights.
