Big Loop around Mt Elden using various trails. This is a great route. It was hot but I had a water stash at mile 15 which was a life saver. Felt surprisingly good :y:

Fresh off vacation on the East Coast, I got an invite from Chums to escape to cooler country in Flagstaff. For various reasons, I'd had hikes with nothing but minimal mileage, elevation gain, or actual elevation for over a month. So, when he threw out a hike with 5,200+ feet of gain, I politely poo-pooed the invite. He came back with a more reasonable 11-mile, 3,200-foot gain hike, and I was in.

The plan was to drive into Friedlein Prairie to cut a bit more mileage off, but we quickly found a locked gate. So, back to the original idea to start at Schultz Tank, only to find another locked gate. Later searching showed that these areas close during the current Stage 2 fire restrictions. On to Plan C.

Neither of us are fans of the trail leaving the Elden Trailhead to the tower, so we headed over to the less busy Sandy Seep Trailhead, with plans to start up the Heart Trail and wing it from there. The burn is still quite evident up here, but you still get sections of unburned forest. We fashioned a loop, mostly of things I'd done before. On Brookbank #2, we smartly off-trailed and short-cutted Hill 8747 to save some mileage. It worked out. We were now starting our climb back up. The Oldham Trail has been completely rerouted going back uphill. It only touches the old trail in a couple of spots. Chums thought there were too many switchbacks. Me, being just a few years older, found them to be appropriate.

We bypassed the Elden Tower and hiked through the aspen thickness of the Sunset Trail to the Elden Lookout Trail. For me, this trail makes tired legs even more tired with all the rocks to negotiate.

Reaching the Fatman's Loop, we made the decision to go cross-country/follow use trails to get our way back to the start.

So much for taking it easy. Temperatures were mostly nice all day, especially in the shade or when the wind decided to blow. Thanks for driving, Chums. Good catching up.

Hiked my first ever AZT section. Started north and hiked south. Little Elden Tank / Spring is dry and one of the walls have collapsed. Apparently this hike was only supposed to be 14 miles, but it ended up being 16 miles. Not exactly sure where those two extra miles came from. Also found three geocaches along the trail. Ubered back to Whetherford TH when I was done.

Finished the last few miles of AZT #32 from where the road is closed. The plan was to continue and hike half of AZT #34 but it was raining pretty hard & my friends weren't feeling it so we turned around. Hopefully Schultz Pass Road will open at some point.

Finally made it back to finish AZT #31 and hike most of AZT #32. Nice Flag hike with lots of mountain bikers & families out & about. The last few miles of road are closed so we had to cut AZT #32 short.

Sandy Seep Trail #129
Bruce switched out the grind up Elden Lookout Trail #4 I enjoy. This is a great alternative for those seeking a more casual approach to the Elden network.

Little Elden Trail #69
Intended to just hike the lower 0.85mi of this trail. 0.72 mi up it has been rerouted by the AZT thousand mile club. The former arduous 0.13mi/44ft heave is now a 0.5mi/44ft stroll around a pimple knoll.

Heart Trail #103
This trail has received a rare nice reroute. Two or three scenic settings stopped us momentarily to admire. We cached water bottles 1.9mi up in anticipation of taking the old shorter route down.

Sunset Trail #23
We took a short break at the junction and then headed up. Albeit torched in this center section of #23, the pines are back in business in under a half mile up. Passing Little Bear Trail #112 I rejoiced not having to go through the mental agony of its ridiculously long switchbacks.

Brookbank Trail #2
Heading down after lunch involved intense rough terrain. They've done a lot of work but there are a lot of fallen trees. The side limbs have been kindly removed in one spot on each to crawl over. Overall, I still enjoy the trail.
Bruce occasionally thinks to check the pine fragrance. Not sure about vanilla/Strawberry/whatever this round. It was a distinct flashback to Dad and I stopping in Flagstaff in '86 moving to Arizona. Stepping outta my Scirocco was the same impact pine fragrance, haven't noticed that in the last 37 years. It was 118° when we rolled into Phx, so at least that hasn't changed.

Upper Oldham Trail
Midway up it seemed like a remarkable pine environment. Pine shade ended and whining set sail.

Down n Out
The joy of the hike was over. Casual ascents make for draggy descents. The area is vivid green, with lots of medium-sized oaks. Nobody goes to Flag for oak foliage but there must be a nice hue when they turn.

Synopsis
Android updated the default voice RS utilizes. Compound words and two words often had a raised pitch on the second part. Bruce puts waypoints in the follow-route for junctions. Sunset HEART and such were comical.

While I prefer steeper grades, this only got draggy a couple of times. It was a great hike to comfortably knock out ~20mi in July.

Off to Flag to get into some cooler air. There was a 60% chance of T-Storms, but we were fortunate to miss the brunt of the storms. The first wave passed to our east, giving us a few sprinkles. The second two waves passed to our west, giving us some light rain for about half an hour or so.

From the Sandy Seep TH, we were one of just a handful of cars - a better, much less crowded option than the nearby Eldon TH.

I wanted to hike the complete reroute of the Heart #103 trail. The reroute is 1.5 miles longer, but the trail is much smoother, has an easier grade, and takes you through some more interesting areas. Me likey.

At the intersection of the Heart Trail and Sunset Trails, and after Joe was done with his distraction, we took a short break and continued counterclockwise (CCW) through the mixed burned and old growth conifers. In here, I spotted a large Whitetail buck, still in velvet.

On the Brookbank #2 Trail, we followed the well-worn path and either missed our turn or the trail has been rerouted. This is just one of a number of trails up here that have been rerouted since the fire. The section from Dry Lake Hills down to Eldon Lookout Road is an absolute nightmare. They may have given up on this section.

We did the road walk to The Upper Oldham Trail and noticed that they've cut in a new Oldham Trail (Middle Oldham) to the north of the road. It meets up with Upper Oldham.

Upper Oldham is in decent shape. There have been numerous washout events, so you need to keep your eyes peeled for the trail vs. wash areas. There are currently a dozen or so deadfalls that you can pretty easily bypass. This climb always sucks the air from your lungs.

Up top, we caught a great breeze to dry off and have a snack. From here, we cruised back to the TH, enjoying the downhill and checking out the old cut of the Heart Trail.

Temps ranged from 74 at the start to 86 at one point, and down to 61.5 during a couple of the rain events. Clouds kept it comfortable most of the day.

Great to get your head out of the oven every now and then.

I walked out the back gate of the RV park and made my way to the northeast along a wide "social trail" which I knew would connect me to the Arizona Trail, Mount Elden #32. This is the "AZT Flagstaff bypass" route not used much by thru-hikers, or so I'm told. It doesn't make much sense to me why they'd avoid it, because Safeway, where they can resupply, is not far off of this route, and they could avoid the super-urban mess of backpacking through the middle of town. Maybe some of them do use this option, I don't know. I walked through the tunnel under 89, proceeded for a bit, then turned around, taking a route along the Elden Pueblo fence line on the way back. Dozens of these unnamed trails in the area.

I just moved into the RV park a few days ago, and will be here through October 1.

Current goal: My goal is still to walk 3 to 4 miles a day. (I had already walked 1 mile in the morning, while my car was having a quick minor repair.) I forgot to take some ibuprofen before this walk, and an ongoing ache bothered me a little bit, but not much. It sucks to get old. I just turned 70. I wasn't supposed to fall apart just yet.

Weather: It tried to rain on me without much success. Chilly, and a bit breezy.

We explored Turkey Hills and Pueblo earlier in the day and originally planned to hike AZT #32 over to Picture Canyon, but running short on time, we decided to drive over to the Picture Canyon Trailhead and have more time in that area. Unfortunately, El Paso Flagstaff Road was closed for construction, so we turned around and parked in the same spot we'd just left, near Route 66/FR 791. With the extra mileage, we we weren't going to have time to see all of Picture Canyon, but we'd see how far we could get with the time we had.

The stretch of AZT #32 leading into Picture Canyon is flat and easy, so we made good time and reached the main petroglyph site. There were a few people far ahead of us on the trail as we approached, but it was empty when we got there. The site had some impressive petroglyphs and plenty of informational signs, though it lacked the excitement of searching/exploring in places like Agua Fria. We stayed a little past our turnaround time before starting back...we didn't have time to explore the canyon/waterfall area, so that will have to wait for another day.

Based on descriptions in other triplogs--and after seeing so much trash around Turkey Hills earlier in the day--I had low expectations for the area, but I had a positive first impression, especially for an area surrounded by city. I guess we technically smelled more of Picture Canyon that we saw today :): as many have mentioned, we noticed the aromas of reclaimed water and the nearby Purina dogfood factory...maybe it's worse in the canyon/waterfall area, but the smells weren't overpowering where we were. There were dark clouds around for most of the hike, but it didn't rain, and I was happy we were able to at least reach one of the points of interest in the ~90 minutes we had before we needed to head back to Phoenix.

Wanting to hike my age in miles, and looking to complete the AZT sections around Flagstaff, I decided to do the AZT Urban Trail, head through the Walnut Canyon Passage, then back north through the Elden Passage and the very southern bit of the SF Peaks Passage. I wouldn't recommend it unless I disliked you. I began my alpine start at the Butler Ave Motel 6 (classy and right next to the AZT!). The trail was beautiful through the Walnut Canyon area. As you head east back toward the 40 it gets more exposed, which continues until you wend you way back west toward Elden. I hike with a Chrome Dome -- with that kind of mileage staying cool was a priority. The thing is that around Flag you encounter a lot of folks who are not really prepared for just how dorky I can look when trying to avoid the sun. I got a lot of bemused looks. I ended the hike with about 2,500 calories of Culver's. I still haven't fully recovered from either the hike or the Culver's.

Another great trip. LOVE Mary's Cafeand the Conoco station off 89. Everyone is very backpacker friendly. The redirects for logging kind of sucked but water was plentiful, which allowed us to keep our weight down.

We started on passage 33 south of the logging detour, hiked out to Marshall lake trailhead then back up passage 31 as we began a 2 & 1/2 day Flagstaff Loop on the Arizona Trail. Day 2 we pressed onto Mary's Cafe on 89, try the Navajo Taco, where we stopped for dinner, then backtracked to a nice camp spot for the evening. The next morning we again stopped at Mary's Cafe, for breakfast this time, and closed the final miles of our loop. Even though day 3 was half the miles of the first two days the combination of a determined headwind and logging reroute leading us along the path of a gas pipeline made it the most challenging/unfun of the trip.

Started this hike at the Shultz Pass Trailhead and went SB. Weather was great for the first 2 miles and then it started to rain - real hard- for the next 3 miles. The last couple of miles we were pretty much sliding in the mud downhill. I wanted to check the spring along the way, but the volume of water coming from the sky would've made it impossible to tell the amount or quality of what is there. We ended our hike at Sandy Seep Trailhead, and will continue later when we get another clear weekend.

I am still beating away at AZT #32, the Mount Elden passage. This was the 4th out-and-back dayhike I have done in order to complete the segment, and I still have at least one more hike to do, the part through the Picture Rocks area, and crossing 89.

Today I chatted with an enthusiastic section hiker, a youngish woman. She was hiking from I-40 to the S. Rim, and said she had already completed 100 miles elsewhere at another time. I also saw a Native American man of upper middle age, who passed me twice, jogging slowly. The second time he told me he'd run 44 miles that day! I talked to one very friendly mountain biker as well who said he enjoys talking to thru-hikers when he sees them.

I was sad to see the sign vandalism, on one of the signs. (See photos.)

It was amusing to get a photo of a freight train at my turnaround point that was almost identical to a photo I took in the same spot a few days ago when hiking the north end of Passage #31. The freight cars were very similar. [ photo ]

Tomorrow if I'm up for it I'll finish Passage #32.

Elden Mountain, SOBO. 13.7 miles and a lovely day hike. Done by 1:30 with enough time to drive back to Tucson. Started out with temps of 28 degrees, but quickly warmed up to tank tops and umbrellas! Frost on ground in the morning. Snow glistening on the peaks. Lots of hikers, bikers, runners.

Hiked another tiny segment of the Arizona Trail, several miles on Passage 32. This goes through the landscape impacted by the 2010 Schultz Fire. Slow regeneration in this dry climate.

This area has one of the worst mistletoe infestations I've seen in a while. This affects only the Ponderosa Pine here, as far as I know.

I walked back via the road after stopping to see Schultz Tank. Very low, as one would expect.

However, despite all these complaints, it was a very pretty hike.

Well, here's a fraction of AZT #32 completed! At this rate it'll take me about 4 or 5 dayhikes to finish one passage! It was a nice hike, some of it new to me, as I had previously always turned up the Heart Trail.

I took the short side trail to see Little Elden Spring. Yuck! Well, at least there is water, but it's a skanky pool. Below it, on the other side of a boulder is a slightly better-looking small pool.

Further along, I came to some aspens and firs. I decided to turn around at the junction for the horse camp. I can go back later, start at that junction and hike the part that ends at Shultz Tank.

Wow, fall temperatures hit Flagstaff hard. I think it was 25 degrees cooler than the last visit just 2-3 weeks back. Nighttime temps dropped below freezing if you factor in the windchill. It made for nice hiking weather though during the day. Finished hiking tonight at 40 degrees right at sunset. Glad to finally have thawed out again.

Got AZT#32 wrapped up and a good start on #34.
