No nutrition waist channels were signed into the summit register for 05-May,'18, so the Linked trail guide one did for that day is a lie. It would be fun to research how many more they've embellished. :-s I digress, but at 5:41am the mindless greyhounds all crushed onto the Gateway Loop Trail, so I chose the more mellow Desert Park start. The rat race was avoided because none of them were seen again for the rest of my hike and double T solo. The East End ascent was hot and humid, then some nice breezes and cloud cover helped immensely. I need to remember that the Tom's Thumb TH doesn't have water because two liters was slightly inadequate.

Nice TT summit climb via West Corner, also top-roped Slip n Slide. Then a quick side hike up East End on the way out.

All I can say is when I did an ML with JJ, he said he followed dave1 because my routes were crazy.

JJ freeclimbed this route and I never would of followed him.

Great views. We did see and hear 2 falcons.

The rock was cold . Fun day and finished off with lunch at JJ's.

This is a cool little hike in the McDowells, and it is more difficult than the distance and AEG would suggest. There is one ascent where you go up past Hog Heaven to the Thumbnail that goes up 750 feet in 1/2 mile -- this section will remind you a little bit of going up Flatiron.

We started at the Tom's Thumb TH and went up Mesquite Canyon on a hiker access route. I noticed from a triplog that KBKB had climbed up the Sven Tower I climber crag, so we did that, and I am glad that we did. There are some cool views of Marcus Landslide from that vantage point. After that we followed the Hog Heaven Loop up to the Thumbnail, and from there went across the ridgeline to East End. If you go hiking in the McDowell's, why not go to the high point in the range! From there we made a descent (first to the north, and then to the west) down to the Tom's Thumb Trail. From there we picked up the Lost Wall Loop and made our way over to Tom's Thumb, and continued the loop west of Tom's Thumb and eventually made our way down to the Tom's Thumb trail and back to the TH.

This is probably my favorite little hike in the McDowells!

Take two! Weather looked a lot nicer, so we tried again. Still pretty overcast, but at least this time we could see the Thumb the whole way up. Definitely made the time go by faster.

Liz attempted Triebler's, but she hasn't been climbing, so confidence was a bit low. We decided to do West Corner instead (labeled West Crack here). Liz led, and said she was glad she hadn't continued up the previous route, as even West Corner was a bit heady. I think everything was pretty good until the slabby traverse. It had collected a lot of water and was just slick and wet where all the good foot smears should have been. Got to the top and took a couple pics and signed the book, then went down and had a snack while Holly and Will finished up on Triebler's.

Then on to Kreuser's. Liz and Holly swung leads, and Will led the first pitch separately while I followed. Probably better on a dry day, but it seemed like a pretty dirty crack when we climbed it. Wet, dirty, and lots of bird poop. I was glad I wasn't leading because it was just very awkward, and seemed like the rock would rather break than take a cam. We got to the top of the first pitch and decided to just stop there and rappel down Liz's rope. The second pitch is super short, shared ground with the top of West Corner, and ended about 10-15 feet above us, so we just took the easy route down for the sake of time and warmth. Packed up, hiked to the car, showered at our respective abodes, and then devoured food and drinks at AZ Wilderness!

After doing a little maintenance on the Scottsdale Juan's I headed over and did Tom's Thumb Loop. Upon Arrival around 12:45pm the parking lot was packed! Hikers and outdoor lovers everywhere! Once I hit Tom's Thumb Trail things thinned out quickly. I went to the Lookout Point and then went over to Tom's Thumb itself. After that I just looped back on the East End Trail and over Windgate Pass.

It finally warmed up outside just as I was finishing.

Ever since we moved into the new house - I have wanted to do this loop from the front door up to Tom's Thumb and back. Dropped kids at school - Brad took day off work to hike.

House :next: Paradise :next: Gateway loop up to saddle and over :next: up Windgate Pass :next: Tom's Thumb past spring :next: up to the Thumb itself (lunch) :next: down East End :next: Windmill briefly :next: Bell Pass up and over :next: back to Paradise trail :next: home to front door.

Very nice weather. Great loop! Lots of AEG without driving anywhere! :y: :D

Did the Tom's Thumb loop this morning with Eric V. We departed the Gateway Trailhead at 9:00 to an overcast day. Lot's of nice folks out enjoying the day as we made our way to the Thumb. Todays mission was to reach the top by free solo climbing it (no gear).

Upon reaching the base we began our way up. The first pitch was fairly easy. The second pitch had Eric saying this would be the hardest part of the climb. He was right and when it was my turn to go I had thoughts of turning back. A few moments of mental preparation combined with some pointers from Eric above and I was past the crux.

Then the third and final pitch. This one is visually the most difficult as the rock is pretty slanted and a slip would certainly be fatal. Eric went first and then placed his pack on top. Upon his return I was ready to make my way over. Once I gained enough courage this one went fairly smooth. From there it is only a short scramble to the top.

Ah success! I was elated and this made my day. It was one of my goals for 2016. For the journey down we had two options as Eric brought a rope. Rappel or down climb the way we came. His choice was to rappel as in his words "it's safer". I have VERY little rope experience so I was leaning towards climbing back down. Eric gave me a quick tutorial/refresher course on how to rappel so I gave it a go. Shortly thereafter he came down making it look unbelievably easy and almost fun.

From here we completed the loop and headed back to the Gateway Trailhead.

A big thanks goes out to Eric for doing this one with me today. I had a BLAST! Hopefully he will go back with me and do it one more time. Next time no rope up OR down.

What a great hike with Chumley, Laurie, Aaron and Diana. Saw 6-8 javelina at the Tom's Thumb spur trail and West End intersection. Good company, good conversation...

This was my first ever HAZ group hike - after 8 years!! :y: The lure of the McDowells plus Joe = my pupils fully dilated and tachycardia. BUT I had organized a bunch of kids' friends to go to Chick Fil A for a Breakfast with Santa at the same time as hike - did RSVP email and double checked with everyone that they were coming and wearing Christmas PJs. And then I saw the post about the hike .... and Joe as a maybe .... and I completely abandoned everything and got a babysitter to take kids! Emailed apologies to my friends - they sort of understand - but not really. "Now who is going on the hike? Oh he's not going? But you're still going?" Basically once I got the babysitter I was in.period.done. Brad has to sleep in on Saturdays or he will lose his mind. I respect that. He works 4:45am to 5:00pm 5 days a week and is on call 1 out of every 3 weekends. So no way was he going to do an 11 mile hike on a Saturday morning.

Wonderful to meet Chumley after corresponding little bits here and there for a while. I think I used to message him about Mac computer questions long time ago. He was kind and stayed back a little when I was in super slow mode in the last 1200 foot climb up. So fun to talk to someone in person who understands all the HAZ personalities and people -- and he spotted a herd of javalina that stopped us all in our tracks to watch (two babies!).

Jason is a fellow Southerner and I even have relatives by marriage that are from his small hometown! He is a #WarEagle just like my husband and graduated right after him (same year as Brad's sister BTW). Jason is very fast and I know I slowed him down a little - maybe a lot. We "know" each other from Instagram already but this was first time meeting in person.

I was the oldest hiker by 3 weeks and I did disclose that my hiking speed with big elevation is 2.5-2.7 MPH. And I was exactly 2.5 -- but kind of sucks to be the slowest one on a hike. I invited a zillion other people to hike and they all opted out due to hike difficulty or scheduling. But I do hope we can have another McDowell romp sometime and coax Joe out if the hike and/or crowd is good enough.

I met Joe only one time in person - I don't think I ever posted the triplog. Was February 2015 on Squaw peak on a Thursday - a date hike day for Brad and me where we both take off work for free babysitting while kids in school. When I saw it was Joe I yelled "Joe" so loudly - wasn't sure he recognized me - yelled my HAZ name (there was no need to yell) - then I wanted to hug him - then I wanted to kidnap him and force him to go to lunch with us - then maybe force him to live in our guest room so I could ask him a million questions about HAZ. He was all sweaty and he didn't want to take a pic - and the whole communication lasted maybe 3 minutes with Brad telling Joe that HAZ makes me super happy and Joe saying something nice but I can't remember the details now.

Anyway -- this hike shows that I love HAZ more than Chick Fil A -- which is saying a lot -- but also I love HAZ more than a kid holiday activity which is extremely unusual! :budrose:

Please don't get a restraining order Joe :scared: :o

Sunday mornings I get up before sunrise and get a hike in and home before kids/husband are even really up and going. Saves money for babysitters and I like getting up early anyway.

Saw two deer on a hill on the drive to trailhead - gorgeous back lit against dawn colors. They stared right at me for several minutes. Love getting to that parking lot and only 1 or 2 other cars. Hiked to the Thumb and back down. Few people starting to trickle up the trail as I was coming down. Too hot to wear my blue MSC shirt but I always wear my badge.

Got back home around 7:15am and convinced the kids to jump in our pool with me! I'm sure the neighbors were thrilled with our antics.

This was a nice step down from Peak 5057 last week. Got there just as the sun was rising; only a handful of cars in the parking lot. The south side of the mountain is still littered with snow from New Year's day. The trail up to Tom's Thumb is very well worn with nice signs designating intersecting trails. The Lookout trail is a lot more rocky, but still not bad at all. From the Lookout you get nice views of Fountain Hills and Scottsdale. In the distance you can see Four Peaks to the North and the Superstitions to the south (there is a pointy formation that I think is Weaver's Needle, but not 100% sure).

We decided to stop by the thumb on the way back and I'm glad we did. It's a lot bigger than it looks from a distance. I was able to climb up the west side a little bit, but didn't get too far. Fun nonetheless :)

AMC outing to classic McDowels climb. Day started out with a cold wind and clouds keeping the sun from warming. After the hike up the hill, we found wind on the rock in the 20 to 40 mph range which made for difficult route setting.

The outing leaders managed to get a couple of face climbs set up a bit to the southeast and these were climbable due to being off the ridge line. I cant find any beta on them but they climbed as 5.7 although rated as 5.5

Happily the wind died out in the afternoon and we got to climb the thumb summit using the west corner route. Although I was hoping for another shot at Treibers, I was thrilled to make the summit at all given the conditions. :y: Rapped of the west side and headed down the mountain to cold beer and lunch at 4 Peaks.

Looking forward to the next opportunity to TR the classic routes on this rock

this was a bucket list climb for me
i've hiked past tom's thumb many times, imagining the day i would stand on top of it
after topping out on hanging gardens, we scrambled off the back and hiked up to the base of tom's thumb
quite a few people out hiking, and we had an audience at times
the initial move on this climb is a stem between a boulder and the face, followed by a step across onto the face
watching mike lead this gave me some heebie-jeebies, but it wasn't that bad
took me three tries to get my hand into a tiny crack to stick to the face, but after that it was just pure fun climbing
face, crack, lieback, off-width, a roof, a spot you have to stem and squeeze through :)
there is a summit register next to the anchors
you still have to step up to the highest set of boulders
being up there was an incredible feeling
great views, a sense of accomplishment and just a cool place to be
i could get into summit climbing
from the top i thought i saw john9l and rachel, and when we rapped down off the west side, sure enough
nice to meet you two!
hiked back down to the top of gardener's wall to hit one more climb
i feel very fortunate to have done this one

Amy hit me up last night to go on a hike today. I am feeling a little under the weather so I wasn't sure if I would go or not. I told her to "put me down as a maybe". When I woke I looked outside and it was cool but nice. What the heck, I am not the type to lay around in bed all day even when not at 100%.

We met up at 10:00 at the 104th Street and Bell Trailhead. Tugger came along for the fun as well. He is a trooper and had no problem with this one at all.

It was a great hike but got a bit chilly for my liking a couple times. Mostly when we would stop or when we were in shady spots. I will do this one again for sure.

Thanks for the invite Amy!
