This was a hike in the Thunderbird Conservation Park. My reason for going out there was to hike up to Thunderbird Peak, aka Peak 1862, which is the highest of the 3 Thunderbird Peaks in the park. It is also the high point of the city of Glendale.

From the trailhead, I did an out-and-back hike to Thunderbird Peak. Then when I got back to the TH I did a CCW loop which took me up to Thunderbird West, aka Peak 1682.

This was my first time to be in this particular park. I thought that it was a nice trail system, and if I lived closer I would likely hike there some.

Since I was out in the West Valley, after the hike I visited the high points of the cities of Youngtown, El Mirage, Litchfield Park, and Tolleson.

A jaunt out to the trails I cut my teeth on when I first moved to AZ. I used to walk to access these trails. Nice to start, warmish to finish.

Stopped at one of my old haunts after dropping off my GS at school. I used to hit these frequently when I first moved to AZ in 1999. I could walk to these hikes.

Quite a few people outside taking advantage of the cool morning.

Starting from the pullout on 51st Ave., I hiked a clockwise lasso of Coachwhip Trail and Arrowhead Point Trail. It is typical Maricopa County suburban hiking: rolling desert. Not easily bike-able due to rockiness. High-end housing less than a hundred yards away. (Average home price over $800k.) 💰

According to eBird, 130 avian species have been spotted in the park. The most common water species being ... uhh ... common merganser. Plus ruddy duck, ring-necked duck, lesser scaup and double-crested cormorant.

The parking on Pinnacle Peak Rd. is definitely the more popular parking option. Many hikers and dog walkers were doing an up & down, or short lasso, both of which are about 2.4 mi., 460 ft.

Clockwise, Arrowhead Point Trail climbs 270 ft., is relatively flat for 200 yds., then climbs a short — but steeper — 120 ft. to the summit. Both climbs are very rocky, with multiple step-ups. The summit had Old Glory, a couple stools built of rock slab resting on gabions, and no shade.

The descent back to the 59th Ave. bridge is 400 ft. It’s steeper still than the way I climbed, but with smoother surface. I jogged much of it. On the way down, I realized my bottle of water bottle had disappeared. It was getting toasty. Luckily, I sill had some water in my Camelbak.

I didn’t jog as much back along Coachwhip Trail, but still made good time, finishing the 2.6 miles in only 56 minutes. (Not counting a bird blind pit stop.)

Visting friends nearby made this hike very convenient. I have hiked here a few times but never on the NW side. Quite a few hikers out on a weekday.
Ironwoods are blooming here. Very little else.
Most of the trails are in good shape.
Good workout hike. Thanks Kelly. :)

Wow, I had the day off and it appears to be the coolest temps we can expect for months. Time to hit the trails. The downfall is I don't know anyone who is available to hike on a Tuesday.

So i sought out a spot of interest fairly close to home. Traversed the entire perimeter of the park today. This was broken down into 3 loops. Back side of Cholla Loop was pry the highlight.

The problem is, much of this outing was either next to road traffic or new home developments. The number of peeps there was acceptable but I wouldn't go near this spot on a weekend.

Continuing my revisit of the West Valley hikes I did when I lived in the West Valley. This was a go to area since I could walk to it. It's been 13 years since I've hiked here.

I started at the 67th Avenue TH, hiking a CCW loop hitting Peak 1682, 1862 and lastly 1831. The last 2 are my favorites, for the tread, flora and views.

The major flora players were brittlebush (they were going crazy), globemallow (Extreme in pockets) and the stinky globe chamomile. There were a smattering of other players in spots also.

The breeze that kicked up made for pleasant hiking weather.

I don't know how I got this report so long, sorry. Continuing to finish off some Areas on the HAZ list... I realized on the drive today that I have SEVEN Preserves or Parks within 20 minutes of my house, almost 9 if you go up to thirty minutes. That's pretty awesome for living in a big city.

The temps would be pleasant this afternoon for my route that would hook up the 4 trails that were on the "to-do" list to complete the Thunderbird Conservation Park area. One of the trails was the splinter trail at the top of Thunderbird Conservation Peak, two would be near Sunrise Peak on the west side and the last one would be at the base of the Arrowhead Point hike.

I decided to park at the W. Pinnacle Peak Rd and 55th Ave and started the hike on the Cholla Loop Trail counterclockwise. All of these trails are a bit rocky and in addition, they have laid a lot of rocks to control the erosion; rolly poly rocks. I much prefer the rocks on the other preserves I hike. The grade, however, is pleasant as you slowly make your way toward the top. I would encounter a few more hikers than I thought I would for Sunday afternoon. Not too far from the top is the splinter trail. I really didn't even know it was there except for the HAZ areas trail list.

The H-3a Trail diverts you east on a ridgeline until you can't go any further. The views were clear, I could see all the way to the Mazzies and Superstitions as well so I got the camera out to do some zooming. I then headed west to Thunderbird Conservation Park Peak, still a nice but rocky grade. Views seemed clear to the west and now it was time to hike this very long ridgeline trail that comes in and out of view, thus it's much longer than it appears. I continued to encounter hikers of all varieties. (I think coming up from the west is harder.) They have laid a bunch of new rock on the part of the trail that goes down the west side and on several more parts of the Cholla Loop Trail.

At the middle parking section between the east and west side of Thunderbird Park, I should have swung to the south and west but I headed just west below the amphitheatre and picked up the Sunrise Trail H-4a from there. Lots of people of all shapes and sizes and ages along with two novice bike riders were on this short stretch. At the saddle I opted to take the trail north around the water tank and then west to hook up with the Coachwhip Trail.

The Coachwhip semi-circles Sunrise Peak. I used it as a connector trail and hiked it south and then east. It's very nice, wide and smooth going in this area so I could pick up my speed a little. As you head east, in about a third of a mile you reach the junction with the Ridgeline Trail H-4b that takes you up to a "ridgeline". It too, has some fresh rock on it to negotiate. It does afford some nice views though. You hike the ridgeline east until you meet up with the junction of the Sunrise Trail. I hadn't planned on doing the Peak but since I was so close, and this time I had time, I headed on up.

This part of the Sunrise Trail to the peak is pretty busy too with hikers of all sizes, shapes and ages. The peak also has nice views and it was a good day for it. I didn't stay long but to take a couple pictures. From here it was back down and to the east side of the Park. This time I stayed above the amphitheatre and hooked back up with the junction of Coachwhip Loop (which starts at the far west parking lot and stays on the southside and crosses over). Essentially you just walk down the old road to the gate and then try to figure out where the Coachwhip Trail is again. You kind of stay to the south of the picnic area and then you'll see the rock-lined trail.

I continued east on the Coachwhip Trail next to and above Pinnacle Peak Road which is so NOISY. After crossing Pinnacle Peak Road I contined on the Coachwhip Trail until the junction with the Flatlander Trail (H-1a), gotta love that name. It takes you about 1/2 mile to the edge of the 500 Club with nice scenery looking up the side of this mountain covered with basalt.

As I made the turn I spotted some hot air balloons so I had to grab a few pictures. As I got further to the east I could see some burned trees so there must have been a fire through here at one time (July 2020). It was stark contrast with the greenery of the 500 Club. As I headed back west, I could see the hot air balloons again above the Arizona Temple; a pretty sight.

If you like to see people for most of your hike, Thunderbird Conservation Par is the area for that. I do hope these people get a chance to hike some of the nicer tread trails of the valley. I saw so many little ones and dogs too. I enjoyed my Huck Lager before heading home.

It's been awhile since I've hiked in Thunderbird Park but there was five geocaches in it I had yet to find so I found myself parked off of Pinnacle Peak road at the park.

I started off heading across the flats to the Flatlander trail heading east skirting the hills. As I neared the golf course, I veered north up the edge of the hill to find the first geocache. From there, I headed SW down to the flats then across and up a saddle to the second geocache. That was all off trail, a nice walk through creosote along the flat then an easy climb up to the saddle.

The third geocache was along the Arrowhead Point trail, so from the saddle, I went NW up the hill to the trail. I ended up finding an old abandoned trail on the ascent. That made the climb much simpler as I didn't have to worry near as much about the cholla. I'd follow the trail, lose it, then end up back on it again a bit later. It wasn't a simple social trail, real work had been put into clearing the rocks and such. I wonder how long ago it was made, then abandoned?

Once on the Arrowhead Point trail, my offtrail travel for the day ended and so did any solitude I was having in the park. I found the geocache along the Arrowhead Point trail, then descended down to the Coach Whip trail where I took the bridge across the road and into the main park proper where I found the fourth geocache. I used the facilities, then continued west along the Coach Whip trail to the west end of the park where I found the fifth geocache on the Sunrise trail. I took the Sunrise trail up to the top where I was mixed in with lots of women wearing yoga pants, then back down to the main park area where I got on the Cholla Loop, back to the Coach Whip trail, over the bridge, and back to my truck.

Report written 1-27-2021 After double and triple checking the radar report for the weather I decided to do this afternoon hike today figuring that I probably wouldn't get in a hike tomorrow. I decided to do a loop that would include Thunderbird Park and Arrowhead Point so I started in a counter clockwise direction.

It was fairly busy all the way to the top with lots of various ages of hikers. It was a lovely day as I looked at the very long ridge line that takes you to the back of the mountain. As I made my way around the West side of the mountain I figured out how I could incorporate the loops to get the most mileage.

I walked across the bridge over the road and headed to the West to come up to Arrowhead Point from that side. I was looking down and noticed that the trail went to the left and as I went to turn to go that direction my body got all mixed up and over I went. I called out in pain for a minute. I knew I was in a lot of trouble; especially when I realized I had probably broken my wrist :o .

I gathered the few things that had come out of my waist pack and held my wrist up close to me and started down the trail. I encountered several trail angels along the way to assist me with various tasks including assisting me with my phone to contact Mia, opening my trunk and detaching my keys from my pack. I'm sure I looked affright, yet no one hesitated to help.

Mia and I discussed Urgent Care vs hospital; I said hospital 🏥 as I was pretty positive my wrist was broken. Luckily I got right in and before I knew it I was in a gown, had blood drawn, wrist and chest x-rays, covid test and had my wrist shot up with a nerve blocker.

They moved me to the ortho wing with a private room where they checked in almost every hour so I got no sleep before my 930AM surgery that didn't start until almost 11AM. After a nerve blocker was done in my neck, 15 minutes later surgery was done and I awoke immediately. (The only thing I wasnervous about was the intubation since that's when my brother went into cardiac arrest and died a few years ago; altho I am much healthier than he was).

Once I finally got back to my room I knew they were supposed to release me that afternoon but I felt that they forgot that so when I heard the nurse talking about freeing up some rooms I yelled out, I'm ready to go home, and within a 1/2 hour I finally was on my way.

I cannot express to you how heavy my arm felt due to that nerve blocker; I swear it weighed 25 pounds. I felt very discouraged at this point but thank goodness that cast didn't weigh 25 pounds; it's still heavy though. Of course, having the cast on my right wrist has complicated things but I'm trying to make the best of it as I slowly gain mobility in my right hand. I bruised my knees and part of my legs and stretched my peck muscle thus effecting deep breaths but all that is much better today.

I've already been out for a 'hood walk and plan a little hike tomorrow. Everyone at the hospital appreciated my healthy status at my age and in light of the waiting room and pre and post op rooms, I can understand that. Wow, that was quite something! Needless to say the pre-post op room is quite fascinating; both the people that work there and the patients. Lots of other side stories but I'll stop here. I'm anxious to get back to the scene of the accident to better understand how I fell.

Welcome to retirement!

I'm practicing for my hike with Linda this Friday so this seemed a good choice for what she has planned. I wanted to do Thunderbird Park and I found the 3-Summits route Jake and Barrett had taken in the past and that seemed to fit my ticket. I was going to do it in the morning but by golly, it was too cold so I waited until after lunch. Sadly, this is my biggest AEG this year :stop:

I started up the hill and realized the route I needed to be on was to the north of the hill so I went over that way and followed the trail over, up and around a little hill and down to another parking lot and then up the hill. However, I knew this was my last hill so I headed back down and realized I hadn't downloaded the route as I was just following all the optional trails that have been recorded here on RS. So I had to wait almost ten minutes⌚ for the route to load and then was able to hike a bit down the road and hand an east heading toward the big mountain in front of me. You can see the trail as it contours on the side but first you have to figure out how to get to it from the next parking lot you encounter.

So now to tackle this route which was indeed, as rocky as I had heard. I read that others said how rough it was and they were glad they wore boots... next time I'll listen. These trails had rough spots off and on the entire route. It was going to be interesting to see how this trail got me all the way to the top of this rather large mountain so it was fun to see how I would get up there. The temp was pleasant enough but there were moments that I thot maybe I should have gone in the morning but I was fine and enjoyed the whole time out there.

Cholla Loop It really is amazing what a nice route they have put together for you to get up from the west to the north side of the mountain :) using interesting switchbacks. And then you get up on the volcanic rock laden top and see you have a little more to go... and not only that, you have to go down and then back up again to get to what I assume is the true summit of Thunderbird Park mountain. The views are pretty great up here too. I could see over to where I had hiked last Friday to the Deem Hills. I would call them the little sisters to these mountains here at Thunderbird Conservation Park.

It seems like it takes quite a bit of time to get back down and just when you think you are down to the bottom there is a tad more bottom to get to. Also, the city creeps in here as does the city sounds like a blower; I do hate those things as there sound carries so far. Finally I make it around to the east side and can see my next summit in front of me. Oh, by the way, the stinkweed is something else out here. It was very tall, very thick, very healthy. However, even in this dormant state, it adds a pretty muted gold color to the landscape.

As I was looking over to this next summit I was hoping the trek would take me up the east side as that looked easier than coming up from the west, and thankfully it did. Arrowhead Point Trail seems to be quite a popular hike as the people traffic was quite significant. The lava rocks are all around as you continue up to a level ridgeline before you hit the flagged summit. I think this is the summit my brother and I did back in January 2004. I can only find 3 pictures and I can't believe that's all we took :o so I'll have to see if I can find anymore.

I spoke with a hiker who had re-located from Sierra Vista and I told him about hikearizona.com. We also discussed all the great hiking down around Sierra Vista. I snapped a few more pictures and then headed west over to the other side of the ridge and then it takes you down the mountainside via a very long switchback. Then you get to cross that rather cool bridge and head west to the other TH. Here the traffic is so loud and I find this incredibly annoying. Fortunately once I got up onto the Sunrise Trail, that sound would be less loud.

On this side I got to hike in some shade and encountered a few silent hikers and when I complained out lout to a couple more hikers coming at me, the one fellow says, I'm friendly and I'll say "hi". Once you hit the intersection to go up the mountain, I felt like I was on a hiking freeway with all sizes, shapes, colors, and ages of people and it wouldn't stop. Wow. Well I guess at this point, it provided me some entertainment as I was definitely feeling worn down. I have never hiked this far without a break before and other than my back being a little sore I felt pretty good.

After snapping a few pictures I head down and around the other side of the top. The mass of people didn't let up until I got up the hill past the Thunderbird Reservoir. I grabbed Tonto Jr. and drove into the interior near a ramada-area so that I could enjoy my beer with a nice view of the ridge. I could still see lines of people on the ridge and heading up Sunrise.

Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.

1st trip
I hadn't been out to this area in well over 14 years or more, so it seemed like a good time to go back. Hiking these trails was like doing them for the first time again, I can barely remember them from before. I hiked the one spur at the top of the east hill that isn't on the map. Saw a fire off to the east a bit which made a lot of smoke that hung in the air and drifted through the valley. It was interesting to see the surrounding mountains from a different perspective and try to pick them out.

I was intending to get a little more mileage in, but the rocky trails tended to slow me down some. I think I hiked uphill faster than I did on several level and downhill sections.

first time hiking here
hit most of the trails, i think
enjoyed the high points on cholla loop, arrowhead point and the h4 loop
backtracked to hit sunrise and get double digits
lots of people out - families, dogs, audible music, people carrying dogs and kids
a little busy for me, but to be expected on such a nice weekend day
have wanted some new trails and thought it was definitely worth a visit
home in time to watch second half of Creighton vs. Marquette
big win for the blue jays!
