Peralta trailhead was 75% full when I arrived at 7:15am. I attempted to make a beeline from the TH toilet to the Dons camp but should have just walked the road. There was an intermittent bootpath but it was pretty brushy; then it took me awhile to find a spot where I could cross over the wilderness boundary fence to get on lost goldmine. It was not the most efficient start!

I thought I had come down Carney Spring a few years ago but the trail didn't seem familiar so now I'm thinking I actually came down the next gully west. I remember a lot more brushy boulders. This trail was actually enjoyable. The whole loop was super fun and scenic, I love the pinnacles and rock formations up high in this part of the supes. Checked out the roost, had lunch at lone tree, checked out the cave, did some single-arm crab walking to get down the ridge...

I turned left on bluff spring and then right into lower barks. Almost immediately I ran out of water so I rolled the dice and scooped up some unfiltered stream water to sip (so far so good :) ) Lower barks was prettier than I expected with big rock shelves and nice pools. About 10 minutes from connecting to dutchman I was blissfully and obliviously rock-hopping down canyon and came within inches of stepping on a very angry rattlesnake. He reared back and rattled like crazy. I didn't slow down until I was 6-8 feet past him. I've seen a few rattlesnakes but can't remember ever being rattled at like that. I very nervously tiptoed the rest of the way downstream and was so relieved to get back on a trail!

Parked at the Lost Goldmine TH, starting out on the Lost Goldmine Trail, up West Boulder, across Dacite Mesa where we ran into a single hiker taking a break, dropped down to Fremont Saddle, and then down the better half of the Peralta Trail to the Weaver's Crosscut junction. At this point we were making great time so we made the decision to hike up one of the climber routes to get closer to the base of the needle, which worked out okay but did add on a lot of extra effort and time to the route. Once we hit the Crosscut Trail, somewhat exhausted, it was a welcomed smooth sailing down the Terrapin and Bluff Springs trails back to the TH.

With the exception of the climbers route and the short off-trail decent down to the Crosscut Trail, all trails were in great condition.

This is an amazing route that will test your route finding skills. We have made just about every mistake at least once, but today we got it, thanks to this app, Carlson and Stewart’s book, and dumb luck. Have fun, start early, take food. This route will take you to some memorable places!

Peralta road is in great condition, lots of dispersed campers along the sides of the road , imagine they are camping in a lot of dust! Met up with @LindaAnn who wanted to see caves but no roost. Parked at Peralta trail head , started off passing by the Don’s entrance with its decorative rock art and through the lot to start Lost Goldmine Trail, passed through the fence near Carney and encountered a small group at the Wave Cave junction, encountered no one else until arriving at Fremont Saddle. Made the side trip over to Shaka Cave, the use path was better than expected and the cave larger than I anticipated, nice views and location for living in, see Linda’s photos. Lost some of our elevation gain to return to the trail up West Boulder Saddle. We conquered this beast as well as possible though I don’t recall much of it in my hypoxic fugue state,I thought I heard things said like early dismissal ,your not dying today , this isn’t Cactus to Clouds, getting closer etc. I think I did my usual stellar job of reducing Linda’s mph average! Enjoyed nice views toward 5057 and West Boulder Canyon after the hard work was done. Had a great back seat driver to get me over to the top of Dacite Mesa where we had a snack break. Love the views and hoodoo fantasy land up here, same weather of off and on winds and sun continued. Once heading toward Fremont Saddle the nice views of Peralta Canyon and Weavers needle entertained us, on arrival there a small number of hikers were present but we quickly went by them. Started going down Cave Trail where we saw no one else until Bluff Saddle Trail . The cairn farm has not been resurrected, we hopped up to Geronimo’s Cave and looked around Linda pointed out a natural formation of a Dali like skull. Further along Cave Trail I showed Linda a rock with a fulcrum that acts like a see saw , she was really impressed :D . Skeptical at first she went along with cutting over to Dutchman Trail via the non existent Don’s Trail. Parking lot was quite full and busy when we returned in the early afternoon. On the drive out started seeing parked cars shortly after passing Lost Goldmine east lot, all the way to Carney, guessing the Wave Cave was busy. Despite threatening clouds no rain until a little spitting towards the end, another nice day to enjoy some exercise outdoors with beautiful views and company.

Just like going to perralta but turn left before then. This TH is large but didn't have many vehicles even tho it was 9 am on a Sunday.

Had to scurry so didnt start the app till the 1st jct. Therefore these numbers are a bit undercounted. There is a post at this jct but no sign. Ar that point this route gets much steeper.

Break at the saddle b4 climbing higher for astounding views near robbers roost. Secluded spot for lunch. Down perralta and walk dirt road back to correct TH.

Reading these recent triplogs on Robbers Roost influenced me to take this route , then I waved to the roost as I went past. Peralta road in good condition all the way to the trailhead , the lot wasn’t full yet but the area became crowded by afternoon. Skirted by Don’s camp and took Lost Goldmine Trail to Carney Springs, encountered a man and his son and their dog ,already past the Dacite Mine turn off , who asked if they were heading to the Wave Cave. Advised them to do an about face and follow me to the fence break at Carney Springs where I advised them to then follow the white arrows. On the way to the ridgeline between frequent pauses encountered two adults and 6 school age children maybe scouts with backpacks who had stayed overnight below 5057 impressed with how easily they moved down the steep loose rocky trail. Eventually arriving at West Boulder Saddle while admiring the old now unreadable sign a young lady came up, waved and turned toward 5057, saw no one else until Fremont Saddle. I continued down to the wash which had a couple of small water puddles and then up the sparsely cairned route and over Dacite Mesa. Elected not to include Robbers Roost as I’ve been several times. Some areas of burn on the way down to Fremont Saddle not too bad as still some pine trees present, now it’s easier to see Peralta Trail . Crossed Fremont Saddle and started down the Cave Trail. Came across 3 discouraged hikers coming back up who couldn’t follow the trail describing an area with a big drop off, they elected not to follow and try again. Soon after a couple also coming up asked if I knew where I was going. David and Tanya introduced themselves and decided to follow me. Visiting from Connecticut they came here to Arizona to meet their children that live in California for the holidays because it was too locked up there. In a it’s a small world moment they mentioned they have a daughter teaching in S. Korea like myself. I forced them to take a break below Geronimo Cave where a young couple recently moved from Chicago came up to us. They were trying to follow an all trails app but complained it kept saying they were on the trail even when they couldn’t see any trail. Now as the acting trail guide the merry band followed me down the chute and slide of the smooth rocks and further , once we arrived safely at the Bluff Spring Trail junction I set them free. Uneventful travel down Bluff Spring Trail but taking my usual route of old Don’s trail over to Dutchman Trail and then back to the parking lot. Looking over Barkley Basin enjoy that expansive view still have been avoiding hiking that burn area, but thankful that I could enjoy this route today and experience all the amazing geology.

My annual post xmas backpack trip was delayed due to unforeseen circumstances, so a good hike was in order. I pulled into the lost goldmine TH at 830 to start hiking for the day. I made the way over to Carney and started the uphill portion of the trip. Made it up with numerous small breaks, but considering how long it has been since I got a big hike in it went fairly well. From the WBS I headed east along to make my first trip.to Robbers Roost. Very cool place to see, I spent some time scrambling around. I met a family who had made it up there from Peralta, some pretty impressive kids to rock that hike. I enjoyed a quick snack and then started the traverse over to Peralta trail. As I headed north the burn scar became very apparent. Things were rough all across the Fremont saddle and the first portion of the Cave Trail. Once down a mile or so the damage was much less apparent. The good news is that all things burned seemed to be recovering, hopefully in a couple years all back to normal. I got off trail at the lower end of the Cave Trail, and did not feel like backtracking so I just went bushwhacking. I eventually joined back up with the Peralta trail and powered back to my truck. This hike has been on my radar for a few years and I was happy to knock it out finally.

There is no place I'd rather be than hiking in the Superstition Wilderness.

My wife wanted to get out for a hike this morning, so that was on the docket. She changed her mind when she woke up with some back pain. Now mid morning, I cobbled together a few of my favorite things and added Shaka Cave, inspired by the recent guide posted by @ScottHika.

I started at the Lost Goldmine TH and scoped out the concrete basin followed by the Shaka Cave. Then up the steep trail to West Boulder Saddle. I followed the route from the saddle down into the drainage, then east up the drainage towards the Roost. I passed an older gentleman on the way up the hill, trying to catch up with his family. His son and granddaughters were having lunch at the Chimney while Grandpa struggled up the hill. Oh well.

I made my way around the corner and then down the hill to the roost. There were two occupants when I arrived, just finishing their lunch. I snapped a couple of pictures and left when they did. For whatever reason, I always get disoriented when I leave that place so I followed them out.

I made my way to the top of the hill, heading towards Fremont Saddle. I had lunch there with a very nice view of Weavers Needle. Grandpa appeared again while I was having lunch. His family left him again in search of the Roost. He walked back and forth a few times, seemingly uncertain whether to continue on to Fremont Saddle or wait. I waited until I heard his family coming up the hill, then headed down to the saddle.

From the saddle, I headed towards the Pinyon Pine, but it was like walking in a mall at Christmas, too many people to dodge. As soon as I reached the Barks Canyon junction, I headed down. I had seen a few photos of the area, most of which were in areas not burned. I was hopeful for awhile. It was short-lived, though. Most of the Barks Upper route was badly burned. One of my favorite icons in the area (I called it the Burning Bush) was gone. I was bummed.

I stayed bummed for the rest of the Barks Upper route. When I reached the Bluff Springs trail, I had intended to go left to visit my favorite saguaro, but instead headed up the hill to finish the loop. I was running out of gas anyway. Time for this hike to end.

The hike up Bluff Springs and down Cardiac Hill was uneventful. I walked the road back to the Lost Goldmine trail where I found the two men that I ran into at the Roost. We chatted briefly about our hikes. When I headed back to the truck to leave, the sky was clouding over to the west, making for an interesting sky. Rain is coming!

Not counting the usual mobs near the Wave Cave, Fremont Saddle and Weavers Overlook, I passed nine people on this loop. Just the way I like it. The weather was warmer than expected at the start, but it got breezy once I reached WB saddle and stayed that way the rest of the hike. Very enjoyable time today. Not easy by any stretch of the imagination, but a great hike.

It's the day after Thanksgiving and everyone will be out. I want something that will burn some of the mass quantities I consumed yesterday, but where to go to avoid the crowds? How about the Dacite Super Loop. Not many people hike that loop so that's what I settled on. I miss my weekly wanders with @CannondaleKid, so I decided to throw in some off trail stuff too.

I parked at the Lost Goldmine TH because no one ever parks there. Until today, that is. A dozen vehicles were there, most likely because there were several dozen parked near the Carney Springs/Wave Cave TH. I left the TH at 9:30ish on a cool morning under a clear blue sky with no breeze. It stayed that way throughout the hike.

At the 2.75 mile mark, I left the loop trail and headed NNW in search of a route to the Wicked Wall Spire. I hiked there once before using a different route, but thought I would try to find something a little easier. I mocked up a route to follow as a general guideline (it looked good on Google Earth), but I kept hitting dead ends. I thought I found something promising, but I ended up facing a down climb that I chose not to pursue. Maybe doable, but not alone. More planning required, or maybe I'll just leave it be. I like the other route well enough anyway.

An hour and 10 minutes later, I was back on the loop trail. I stopped for lunch and a break. Off trail stuff in that boulder strewn area is hard work. It was enjoyable, but I was famished.

Back at it after the break, I cruised up to the down climb above Fremont Saddle. Up to this point I hadn't encountered any burn areas. I knew the area above Fremont Saddle had burned and I was in it in short order. Where the fire burned hot, the soil was quite soft. I had to tread carefully to avoid slipping and falling. When rain comes, that area will see some erosion. Interestingly, the route down to the saddle was much easier to follow post fire. Where the grass was trampled low from boots on the ground, the fire skipped over it, making the trail quite prominent.

At the saddle, I did my best to avoid the mob, hustling over to the Cave Trail. I didn't see anyone until I reached the Geronimo Cave area. As I was approaching the cave area, I saw a group of eight or so high up on the north side of the mountain. I thought they might be trying to get to the top, but it looked like they were confused and trying to find a way down. I hung around until they were all down safely. Turns out they went around the east side of the caves, following cairns that others left. There are many new sections of the Cave Trail since the last time I was up there. Starting to look like South Mountain. I'm surprised more people don't get lost.

After leaving the Cave Trail, I worked my way down Bluff Springs looking for, and finding, a spur trail from Bluff Springs to Dutchman mentioned by @DayTripper when he last hiked the Cave Trail. Like Tom, I don't like that last section of Cardiac Hill on Bluff Springs. I'll gladly walk an extra mile to avoid that. Once on Dutchman, that last half mile is probably the best half mile on all of Dutchman.

I still had to get back to the Lost Goldmine TH, so I bushwhacked over to the Dons Camp. It beats walking down the dusty Peralta road with a steady procession of vehicles coming and going. I walked through the Dons Camp, past the gate and back to LG TH. Done.

I saw three Ridgeline hikers on the way to OWB saddle and the aforementioned group on the cave trail, but I had solitude the rest of the day. Wonderful hike. Best of all, I was starving and leftovers were beckoning. Time to eat!

Can’t beat this loop when looking for variety and solitude within an hour of the valley. Started at Lost Goldmine at 6am, reached West Boulder Saddle before sunrise, made a quick breakfast stop in the Roost, had Fremont Saddle to myself (!), and returned via Cave. Didn’t meet anyone on trail until heading down Cardiac. Both Peralta and Carney Springs THs we’re overflowing on the way out.

Water flowing in upper West Boulder, dribbling from pool to pool.

Oh, and went with default stats. RS thought I took a few half-mile strides up Carney. If only.

Another weekly update on Peralta Road, grading has been hit and miss, very little water left in washes, cattle grazing by the roadside no problems driving in as long as you slow down for the occasional deep rut. Another chamber of commerce weather day in the Superstition Wilderness. Parked at Peralta Trailhead and hiked down to Carney Springs area ,on Goldmine Trail , headed up the signed Wave Cave Trail. Somebody had a full can of white spray paint to decorate the rocks and enhance directions to the Wave Cave ,ironically except at the turnoff for west boulder saddle. Don’t be afraid to continue on however as the vegetation has decided to sprout green ribbons to guide you up to the saddle. Seems each year I have to stop and take more pictures on the way up :D . Walked a few steps along the ridgeline, in order to check that one off for 2020, then headed down to the pools of water at the beginning of West Boulder Canyon then on to the cairned route passing by Robbers Roost . Dropping down to Fremont Saddle I was greeted by the sound of “Amazing Grace” and other hymns echoing down the canyon performed by a small group of young ladies. Continued to periodically hear them as I proceeded down Cave Trail. Except for the hikers and singers at Fremont Saddle passed by no one else on the trail today. Enjoyed the awesome scenery on this little travelled route.

Trail get difficult to follow shortly after the intersection with the Ridgline trail to the saddle. Did get a chance to see a Bighorn Sheep in prime conditions. A very windy day for hiking.

Awesome trip in the Superstitions today. I checked out the Eastern edge of the Ridgeline trail for a future complete trip.
Made stops at Robber's Roost, Fremont Saddle, Geronimo's Cave and Devil's Slide. Beautiful scenery and views abound!
The weather was cold and blustery, but made it down before any rain started. I love this hike and want to come back again! :y:

Awesome rock formations to admire on this route plus it allowed hiking in solitude despite seeing all the parking lots off Peralta road by midday to be packed, including Carney Springs, Goldmine, Peralta and Peralta overflow, guess everybody wasn’t shopping. Able to park at Peralta trailhead about 0800 started on Goldmine Trail noticed about .5 miles from the junction for West Boulder Trail a new Wave Cave Trail sign .The crowd was heading toward Wave Cave, passed by the only hiker I saw on West Boulder trail, caught up to 2 backpackers ,one with a 52 lb pack, that I managed to pass,I was carrying a couple of extra pounds myself just not in the pack. Only 2 hikers at Robbers Roost, explored some of the nooks and crannies above the Roost, went by the wave with no cave, then observed a very busy Peralta Trail on the way down, helped confirm my decision to use Cave Trail, met no one on it, added a little appendage to the Loop by taking Don’s Trail to Lost Dutchman. Neither water nor wildlife to report. When I returned to the parking lot the register had several pages filled out from today.

the plan b hike we did today most closely resembles the dacite super loop with a couple of detours
got going around 0700
up to west boulder saddle - i had forgotten how much fun that is
decided along the way to hit robbers roost and go down the cave trail
i've only been on the section between west boulder saddle and fremont saddle once
really enjoyed seeing it again, especially the visit to robbers roost
great geology, rock formations and views from up there
went out to the pinyon tree for a snack break
surprised to have it to ourselves
returned on cave and bluff springs trails
could see the hordes on peralta :o
since we had parked at carney, we hitched a ride from peralta, not wanting to walk the dusty dirt road
carney was the usual circus full of wave cavers
hadn't been on any of these trails in a few years
nice morning for some exploration and great scenery with ray and john
thanks, guys :)

Kelly invited John and I to get out for a hike. I've only been out for a couple of easy hikes since the new year so I wanted to do something hard. Plan A was 5057, my suggestion, but it was clear early that I didn't have the conditioning to get me there. So we settled on something fun instead.

From the Carney Springs TH we hiked up the WB saddle, then headed west toward Robbers Roost, played around in there a bit, continued down to Fremont Saddle, out to the Weavers Needle overlook, then back on the Cave Trail to the Peralta TH where Kelly managed to find us a ride back to the car. We would have finished the loop on foot, but I was toast and we all knew it.

I played catch up most of the hike, hence the lower break time in my triplog than Kelly's. I knew it would be difficult after a long layoff, but not this difficult. I have some work to do.

Kelly and John, thank you for a fun time, and thank you for your patience. In spite of the pain and struggles, I really did have a great time.

You can't go wrong with this hike on a nice crystal clear cool day. The climb up to West Boulder Saddle gets the blood circulating and opens up the pores. Always a great feeling when you reach the saddle. Everything to come is easy in comparison.

The route to the Roost through the boulders and hoodoos is unique as is Robbers Roost itself. From there it's an easy geologically impressive trek to Fremont Saddle, the pine tree, and on down one of my favorites the Cave Trail.

Wonderful day. Great company. :)

It was steep at times.

Had the all stars with me today for this trek into the Superstitions. Jan, Carey, Maria, and Yolanda. My second time up Carney Springs to Robbers Roost then over to Cave trail for my first (and successful) attempt. We made good time up Carney and was passed by a large group from the Arizona Mountaineering Club doing Ridgeline. Meet one lone hiking at Robbers Roost who came up Peralta. Cautiously made our way down Cave trail thanks to first hand knowledge of my teammates and route info from HAZ. Definitely made good use of the GPS tracks for this one! Fantastic day in the Sups!

Ben, Marilyn, Marilyn, and I hiked the Dacite Super Loop on Sunday.

As we were hiking Lost Goldmine, we encountered another group coming back toward us who had overshot the turnoff for the Wave Cave. Checking the track on my GPS watch, I found out that we had overshot it too. Our groups hiked together for a time. We found the Carney Spring Trail and, a short while later, I showed them where the fork for the Wave Cave was.

The trip up Carney Spring Trail was uneventful, though both Ben and I had forgotten that there was a false summit part way up.

After turning off of Carney Spring Trail, we got off track - twice. In both instances, I noticed fairly quickly that we were off track and, for the second one, we also returned to the correct trail fairly quickly. But on that first occurrence, we decided follow the cairns for a ways to see where they led. We ended up in a drainage that was north (and on the other side of a ridge) from the drainage that we should have been in. The cairns seemed to be leading up to a shallow saddle which, I think, would have joined up with the the trail down to Fremont Saddle. However, in one of my other hikes of the area, I had taken a look at (what I believe to be) the descent for this diversion. It was steeper than I felt that the group I was with would be comfortable. So, instead, I hiked up to the ridge to see if we could get back on track without totally backtracking. While on the ridge contemplating the steepness down, I noticed a cool double arch to my left - I took a photo. Deciding that the way down might be too steep, we ended up backtracking to get back on track.

Back on track... we made our way down to Fremont Saddle, skipping the side trip to Robber's Roost.

We then got onto the Cave Trail and made the side trip to the pine tree to view Weaver's Needle. Continuing on, we took a look at the caves and then had fun descending the Devil's Slide. We got slightly off track for a third time - again following some decent looking cairns - but soon got back on track again.

Our descent of the Bluff Springs Trail was uneventful, though it did seem rockier than I remembered.

It was a really fun loop hike - getting off track a few times made it all the more fun!

Parked at Peralta trail head and walked to lost goldmine trail head, everyone else heading up peralta trail.Took Lost Goldmine trail west to Carney springs turned up and headed toward west boulder saddle everyone else turning left towards wave cave. After reaching the false saddle noted a group ahead of me near the actual saddle.Rather than taking the traditional route over dacite mesa took the easier route toward robbers roost at that point the group I had seen ahead of me was coming down from the left at least one saying follow that guy. Did not see them again, though plenty of cairns on this route then met a small group before descending to robbers roost they decided to follow me there. Visited the roost and went up the chimney , then on to Fremont saddle again heavily cairned route, love the views of Weavers Needle on the way there better than the needle overlook. Took the cave trail to bluff springs trail finished up taking the don's trail to lost dutchman trail to return to the parking lot.I enjoy doing this loop at least once a year, before I joined HAZ never knew it had a name. Overall uneventful hike, recommended if your looking for a good workout and want to miss the crowds this time of year.No pictures posted as nothing new or remarkable to share.
