Day Two of hiking:  Tina had stuff to do after breakfast, so Deborah and I headed for Grasshopper Point to do a hike Ambika and I tried to do in 2021 but the TH was closed.  It was very blustery when we got out of the car; I even had to put my down jacket on.  This is a well maintained TH where people park and can picnic and enjoy the creek below.  It's a pretty nice area.  We headed north and took the little trail detours toward the Creek; one that included the creek crossing over to our side.  However, the creek was running on the far side so after that, we could only hear it for the rest of the hike.

We continued north and hiked along some cliff walls.  They did some nice trail construction as there were stone steps involved a few different times.  We hiked through the now leafless trees with some giant sycamores showing off their stature and beautiful bark.  There were also some giant ponderosas too.  A couple areas had some extensive vineage; some sort of berry.  It was pretty thick.  We got to the junction with the Casner Canyon Trail where we turned around.  Interestingly enough, this is the only place we saw a hiker and he continued on to the east.

The temperatures seemed to warm up a tad and we had a little protection from the wind but it was still gusty.  On the way back we spotted some sort of mechanical part.  It looked very interesting.  Once we got back to the TH area we walked down to the creek.  There are some nice wide open spaces here to walk around and check out the creek.  I spotted a big burl on a sycamore tree; it was beautiful (see [ photo ] ).  I did notice there is a trail that takes you up to Midgley Bridge and in fact, the Allen's Bend Trail seems to go a little further south.  We had an errand to run so we didn't have time to investigate further.  Allen's Bend Trail goes all the way to the Huckaby TH along the creek. I think we've had some HAZers that have done this.

I did take a lot of movies for this video:   [ youtube video ]

This was the second hike of the day and the last while I was vacationing in Sedona. This wasn't what I wanted to end with it, but time constraints dictated otherwise. Did this trail immediately after doing the Jim Tompson Trail. Very convenient in that they both use the same TH.

The Allens Bend Trail is really a tale of two trails. From Midgley Bridge the trail drops down, goes under the bridge and then parallels 89A. About .15 miles from the TH, the trail splits. Huckaby Trail begins a switchback down to Oak Creek. Allens Bend continues straight, paralleling the road. It continues to do so for about .4 miles. This is an ok stretch, but it is more of a "get me there" trail than a designed, scenic trail. You get a decent view of Oak Creek. However, the trail is flat, straight, cart wide and you have traffic from 89A rumbling by 15ft above you. At .4 miles you come to a road that is the entry point for Grasshopper Point. It appears that the Allens Bend Trail dies here, but you actually have to follow the road down to the parking area to continue on with the Allens Bend Trail. At this point, the trail aesthetics change completely. The trail engages nicely with its environment. You have Oak Creek babbling on one side and some beautiful rock formation looming on the other. The trail is immersed in trees so there is a more intimate feeling. Quite a change from the first part of Allens Bend. This t stretch is only about .6 miles long and ends where Casner Canyon Trail begins. On this hike I met the Red Rock Crew. A group of 6 volunteers that appeared to be focusing primarily on removing graffiti. Up until that time I had never thought about (or realized) that I have never seen any graffiti on any of the trails that I've hiked in Sedona! :yr: Near the end (probably about .85 miles in) there was a split in the trail. There was a post there, but no sign. I followed the trail to the left that took me up and to the road. There was actually some stonework along parts of this trail that makes me think that this was a designed access trail at some point in the past. This access trail took me up to 89A and a pull off with enough parking for 3-4 cars. From here I turned around and took a more direct user trail back down to where Allens ends and Casner begins. From this point, I took Allens Bend back to Midgley Bridge. Nice little hike. No wildlife and no one else on the trail, except for the Crew.

First trip up Wilson Mountain which was a really fun hike. With the cooler temps we couldn't have picked a better day. The climb up was a nice gentle grade which was enjoyable. Went out to the Sedona Lookout then made the hike out to the north end where we enjoyed the red rock views while eating lunch. On the way down we decided to hike out on the first bench to the point that it started to drop which turned out to be a great decision as we ran into a small herd of deer. Once at the TH we hiked down to the creek and took the Allens Bend Trail out to the start of the Casner Canyon Trail to scout crossing conditions for a possible upcoming hike.

Parked in the empty Grasshopper day use site with the plan to go up Casner Canyon to Schnebly Hill road to Munds Wagon Trail to Cow Pies to Hangover and return on Damifino Trail. Unfortunately, Oak Creek was running strong and running deep. Unable to find a suitable crossing we dropped to plan B. Took Allen's Bend trail down to the bridge and headed up Wilson Canyon trail to the end. Took a side trip up Jim Thompson trail to add some time and miles. Returned the way we came. Passed miles and miles worth of cars heading into Sedona on our way out. Stopped at Red Rock Cafe in Oak Creek for some beers and burgers.

clockwise Mitten Ridge loop: Huckaby/Allens Bend/Casner Canyon/Damifino/Overhang/Munds Wagon

I had been wanting to do a variation of the Mitten Ridge loop I had done a month earlier, and check out the new Overhang Trail as well. Started off at the Schnebly Hill road trailhead, going north on Huckaby, where the sycamores and ash trees were at peak autumn brilliance. Continued on down Allens Bend Trail onto Casner Canyon Trail, where I stopped for a very cold (and brief) swim in Oak Creek. I crossed the creek, then turned south to climb to Mitten Ridge on the Damifino Trail, where I could see a ribbon of fall color winding up Oak Creek Canyon. Once at the saddle on Mitten Ridge, I turned west onto the new Overhang Trail, which was the highlight of the entire loop for me, following a narrow catwalk along the north side below massive cliffs. After many photos, I made the U-turn onto the south slope of Mitten Ridge and descended to Munds Wagon Trail. Made the last leg back on Schnebly Hill Road in the growing darkness, happy to have had the opportunity to do this great loop. I definitely recommend it.

Drove up on Monday for lunch at Indian Gardens just south of Slide Rock (Rated #1 out of 114 Sedona Restaurants) with my lovely Wife and my almost-as-lovely Mother-in-Law for a Gobbler Sandwich washed down with a Natural Brew Root Beer on the back patio. Perfect cool weather and tons of yellow. :D
Bopped over to the Allens Bend Trail at Grasshopper Point where I gave Karen's mom a lesson in trekking pole use to help her with her footing on the trail that does provide some challenges for a septuagenerian. The trail has no real AEG, but several sections involved 16-18" uneven steps and little drop-offs to the side. She took her time and did great.
The trail skirts the bottom of a 20-40' redrock wall for much of its length, and that added some interest to the otherwise limited views. Yellows were in abundance, but the reds we were looking for were nowhere to be found.
We made it to the Casner Canyon Trail junction, where we turned around and headed back to the car and our A-Frame at Oak Creek Terrace Resort. The cabin sits right on Oak Creek, comfortable and clean with decent views. The only caveat would be the size of the shower stall and spiral staircase, which were comically tiny.
We left the cabin chilly, jumped under the blankets and listened to Oak Creek below as we slept for about 11 hours.
Tomorrow we will head to West Fork, hoping for some reds!

Sedona was calling me, and I wanted to see Damifino Trail itself. I dropped down from the highway, waded through the chilly autumn water of Oak Creek, and started up Casner Canyon. I climbed toward Mitten Ridge on Damifino, thoroughly enjoying the trek and my surroundings. The approach to the saddle on Mitten Ridge was epic, just as exciting as I had hoped. The saddle itself offered an amazing view. The surrounding mountains and ridges were bathed in brilliant gold sunset light, and framed by towering red sandstone. I wanted to see more and get in a longer hike. After a futile attempt to descend to Bear Wallow Canyon and the Munds Wagon Trail directly below, I went east on what is now officially signed as the "Overhang Trail", and followed it to the Cowpies Trail. It was pretty much dark when I reached Schnebly Hill road. If only I had started earlier. Oh well, I was committed now. I continued down the road and Munds Wagon Trail in the darkness, eventually turning north onto Huckaby Trail. The lights of Sedona illuminated the area's cliffs rather well. Passing Allen's Bend/Grasshopper Point, I was happy to reach my truck. I had dinner under the stars above Midgely Bridge, then headed for home.

I wanted to hit some new areas in Sedona, and visit a little known favorite of mine.

This is the first TH I've used in awhile that was paved. I could have washed the truck. ](*,) It was nice that we were able to park the vehicle at Midgley Bridge and use it as the hub for basically 3 hikes. We were able to resupply, so we didn't have to carry as much weight.

Good thing the clouds were out until 9am or else Tibber Bartel and Tibber Coan never would have finished this hike. We crossed under Midgely, crossed over Oak Creek and headed down Huckaby for a short distance. We then scrambled up a track that Joe had drawn up and made a beeline for the Unnamed trail on the way to Mitten Ridge and the start of the Damifino Trail.

That mile or so of trail that traverses the ridge and the beginning of Damifino, is one of the most beautiful sections of trail I've been on. I have no idea why it is not shown on any maps and is unnamed.

We completed the loop going past Grasshopper Point saying hi to Hanks relatives and back to Midgley to resupply. Next it was the scramble towards the top of Steamboat Rock. More pretty views and fun climbs to get close to the helm of the ship. It was the one of the first times I had a bit of fear in climbing. I was looking for a way up to the Helm and got to a point where Joe told me (from below me) not to look down. I couldn't help myself and got that feeling in my stomach that I had to wait to pass before going back down.

Next it was off to the Classic Wilson Mountain Trail. Both of us nursing Chest Colds, and Joe whining about no sleep the night before made this tougher than it should have been. We had a trail guard that tried to get Joe to turn around.

[ youtube video ]

Once passed the Trail Century, it was still a pretty good climb to the South Overlook. But well worth the effort.

Another great day on the trails. We are so lucky to have Sedona and the rest of the hiking playground, right in our back yard! Thanks for joining me Joe.

This hike was extremely easy. It is flat terrain for the majority of the hike. The small amount of stone we had to hike over had stairs carved into it. The path led to another part of the river that you can access at the beginning of the trail. The scenery was nice with the leaves turning different hues of orange and yellow. The weather was perfect in November.

This is a loop in the eastern Sedona/Schnebly Hill area that links Casner Canyon to Oak Creek/Allens Bend-Huckaby trails and then up Bear Wallow Canyon via Munds Wagon past Cow Pies & Merry Go Round and along FR153 (Shnebly Hill Rd) for the last mile back to my original TH at Schnebly Hill Vista/upper Canser Canyon TH. Well I don't quite think this loop is worth its own trail description since its more of an extended/upper loop to a Damifino Loop though most people might prefer to park at the lower Munds Wagon TH or the bridge since those THs are paved. The only tricky portion of route finding was that first section from the vista pulloff to the northside of the northern fork of Casner Canyon. Needless to say, the views of Wilson Mt and down the canyon towards Sedona are quite breathtaking... :D Afterwards its was pretty smooth sailing after that though at Oak Creek I decided to follow the creekbed instead of the trail which was closer to the highway. Some sandals would be preferred for the two creek crossing and the oaks at this lower elevation still had their fall colors. I've driving that highway thru this section quite a few times, but you never can quite enjoy the view while driving like you can while hiking. I continued on the Huckaby trail to Munds Wagon trail and made the moderate climb back up to the vista accidently passing up the Cow Pie side-trail on the to Merry Go Round. Again great views of Mitten Ridge and Munds Mt as the setting sun made the sandstone glow as I climbed back up to my vehicle. Once at the upper Munds Wagon TH, you just need to walk the road another mile up to the Vista pulloff.

Just bought a grand annual red rock pass and a wanted to take advantage of it, so I decided to go into grasshopper point without paying. Hiked about a half a mile back with my girlfriend and then took a side trail to the creek. Hung there for a while and shot some photos, then hiked back to grasshopper point and hungout some more. Nice area.

This is a nice easy hike. We took our 3 and 7 year old daughters on this hike and they had no trouble. We has lots of fun looking at all of the wildlife in the area. I was even able to get some close-up shots of a duck in the creek.

The trail has been wiped out a bit by people going off trail so much, but it is still easy to find. This is a good hike for the young ones.

Short but fun hike. I wouldn't rate it a 5, but it was nice. Really have to get off the trail to see the beauty of Oak Creek, but it's a great "beginner" introduction to creek bed travel and boulder hopping. My wife enjoyed relaxing on the big rocks above the creek, and the little Indian ruin is kinda neat, although I wonder how much it, or if any of it, is original.

Tried to make this our destination for our Sedona trip this past weekend. Allens Bend (Grasshopper Point Recreational area) now is not allowing dogs on this trail. :?: So we had to find another spot for our day hike with "Molly".
