Had to park up top since the small one at the trailhead was full, so took the Sedona View Trail down to the airport loop, then took Sedona View back up to the parking lot. On the trail we ran into a couple, he was wearing a Georgia Bulldogs shirt and she was wearing a Masters cap. I asked if they were from Georgia and they said Hephzibah, which was a few minutes from where I grew up. They go to church in the town where I used to go to school and work. What are the odds?! 2000 miles away from home!

After a nice lunch back at our suite, we headed back out with the hope of finding a parking spot below the Airport Mesa Vortex and guess what, we did. I just don't like that hike down from the airport vista parking area. We headed up to the Summit for a look-see. It's hard to beat the views from there. I took photos of the gals and we even got one of me. We headed back down and away from the small crowd of people in the area and started our hike clockwise.

We were in the shade off and on during this part of the hike. We would only see two people on this side until we got over to the north side. The trail is kind of ledgy but Tina acclimated pretty quickly to it. It's a fairly decent trail tread with the usual rocky Sedona trail from time to time. And, of course, you really can't beat the views here. I was able to use some of the trees as a frame up of Cathedral Rock even though the light was not great due to the time of day. This is a hike better saved for the morning. I'm still impressed by all the beautiful and almost lush prickly pear cactus that line the trail in spots. Needless to say, it looks really healthy.

We got to the west side after hiking up gradually along the side. Once on top, the trail takes you through the golden grasses. The views at this time of day are not well lit. We did get to see a couple aircraft fly over us. I managed a few photos and Google photos made a pretty cool pano out of them. It is very rocky up here so not necessarily a pleasant hike. We got to the other side of the airport and went down through what looked like a rock slide as it is even more rocky. We crossed the gully and the trail split. I don't remember that from before. Tina wanted to go east but I wanted to continue northwest up the hill. Looking at the satellite map, it looks like the east trail ends up back on the main trail but it's hard to tell.

Soon we were heading down the northwest side. And all of a sudden, we could hear coyotes; sounded like they scored. We listened for a bit before heading down the side of the hill where you reach a junction with the Bandit Trail. From here back to Tonto 3 we saw about 1/2 dozen hikers and a couple dogs. You have minimal tree cover and are hiking on some nicer trail tread. And once again, you have pretty nice views with Thunder Mountain to the north and other areas to the Northeast where I nabbed a good picture of the Coffee Pot and we even spotted the Devil's Kitchen Sinkhole over in the Soldier Trail area. We hiked in the shade of the mountain for the last 1/4 mile before making it to the Vortex parking where a couple cars were waiting for a spot to park.

Tina thought it would be better just to hike only the south side as an out and back. I think it depends more on what kind of light you get. Here is the link to the video I created with Filmora 12 which is a significant update and thus why I am switching from Adobe Premiere Elements. It's still a learning curve but I just like all the fun things I can do and I think it makes for a better video: [ youtube video ]

My Calgary friend was unable to use her points for their Sedona Hyatt timeshare so she asked if I would like it and what dates would I be available. After finding availabilities, not only did she get me a couple days, I got the whole week :y: . She called it my retirement present. I sure know how to pick my friends. Anyway, thx to Tina who I will be camping, backpacking, chaleting and backpacking with in Glacier Park toward the beginning of August. Meanwhile, it's a week in Sedona and so far, it's been awesome!

I picked this hike for us to do as a warm-up. Ambika and Guru haven't been hiking much so I thot this would be a good choice with a lot of bang for the buck. But first, we had a great breakfast at the airport's Mesa Grill and then joined the throngs heading down to the eastern saddle of the loop. This is a bit of a rocky uneven trail in parts; seems worse from when I was last here. At the saddle, when I was reviewing the interpretive sign, I noticed they had labeled Courthouse Butte as Cathedral Rock; not sure how long it's been like that.

The trail is a little rugged in places, I forgot about that too. However, the views are as awesome as ever. The trail was very busy with people and dogs, mostly going the same direction as us but some the other way. We would see a few couples twice as I guess they circled back the other way or something. Most everyone was friendly. When we got to the west side the breeze was nice and steady. We did see one small jet come in for a landing.

The last big hurrah is when you near the northwest side to see Capitol Butte/Thunder Mountain almost hit you in the face. The north side is pretty boring but at least the trail is a little nicer. You still have decent views and there are occasional spots of shade. And then there's that 1/2 mile climb back up to the parking lot once you get across the road. The trail was as busy as ever with people of all ages and sizes wanting to get to that little viewpoint above the saddle. I don't think many realized it wasn't just a quick and easy jaunt.

Later that evening, after dinner on our balcony, we went in search of a sunset and ended up at the trailhead for Bell Rock and got some nice pictures.

WATCH: 4.55 miles burning 711 calories. Temp at start 64.3 and 14% humidity finishing at 12:22PM. FYI we ate at the Shorebird Restaurant just down the street; food and service were great. I had a Blood Orange Drop that was quite good :)

Driving up to the Sedona Airport is a popular tourist thing to do these days, and to be fair that's for good reason. The airport is super cute and is now becoming even more famous because it's highlighted in the latest version of Microsoft Flight Simulator as one of only 30 airports around the world to get special details. It's located on a small high-up mesa known as Tabletop Mountain. You can drive up the airport road in minutes and get a spectacular view of West Sedona on one side, with airplanes landing on the runway right behind you. There's a restaurant built into the airport, which looks irresponsibly crowded during the pandemic right now but I look forward to trying it some day. There's also a hotel/resort that I assume has a bar or some place to get drinks.

There's also a trail that loops around the entire airport. I like trails, and I like airplanes, so of course I had to become acquainted. I'd say the trail exceeded my expectations.

Like all popular Sedona hikes, it's crowded, so forget about solace. But despite the airport being a popular tourist draw, the trail was not *as* crowded as I would've guessed. The total loop is about 3.5 miles so that may be one reason why. The trail is also quite precarious at certain high points. The official trailhead was much more crowded than the trail itself, because it's a good spot for scenic selfies etc.

Speaking of the trailhead, parking is a nightmare (again, par for the course in Sedona). I got lucky and found one parking spot as I pulled up. Expect to drive up, sit, and wait for a spot otherwise--if you want parking at the actual TH. However, for $3 you can drive another 30 seconds and go to to the tourist lot at the airport itself which has ample parking. Doing so will make it just a tad harder to figure out how to connect to the trail, but it's really not complicated.

Clockwise or counterclockwise will be your next choice. The more precarious parts of the trail are in the early stages of the clockwise route, but these are coupled with the most gorgeous views. But really, the views are great throughout. By the time I was over 1 mile into the hike, I pretty much had the trail to myself. I encountered maybe 2 or 3 hiker groups going in the opposite direction. I passed or was hiking a similar pace to exactly 2 hiker groups in my same clockwise direction. For Sedona, that's pretty good.

Do not overly rely on the route I have posted. The official trail route indicates that I took the wrong fork toward the end. However, it looks like most tourists/hikers take the wrong fork and I don't think it's a big deal. If you take the left fork, you'll get maybe one more mile of isolated trail before reaching the TH. Most people accidentally take the right fork, which brings you up to the airport tourist lot. If you couldn't find parking at the official TH this will get you to your car more conveniently anyway.

Although the trail looks largely flat on the topos, you can see from my AEG total that I still gained a decent amount of elevation for a good work-out. The Sedona Airport isn't insanely busy but I did catch two airplanes taking off, and one helicopter.

Is this hike worth doing? I say yes. If you're in the City of Sedona, you've already forfeited options for hiking in total isolation anyway. The trail is beautiful, it offers a nice work-out, the views are top-notch, and you can please your inner child by staring at airplanes. Post-pandemic maybe you can enjoy a burger at the restaurant when you're done.

Belated post. Last day of vacation and I wanted to get a quick hike in before returning to the valley. Chose the Airport loop because of the proximity to where I was staying and its length. I didn't do any reading about this trail prior to the hike so I went in blind. The loop itself was a little shorter than I anticipated, but I was able to add on some mileage by doing the Table Top trail as well as the Sedona View connector. Got to the TH a little before 5am. The parking (enough room for maybe 10 cars) was already half filled. The sun hadn't risen yet, but there was still plenty of light out and a handful of people were already gathering at the vortex. Sedona, being Sedona, there was a nice trail map at the TH so I got decent idea of the trails in the area. I started out by doing an "up" and "down" on the Sedona View connector. The elevation change is minimal but it did bring me to the top of the mesa. Nothing spectacular about the trail or the mesa, but as one other description noted it does provide an option for overflow (paid) parking in case the TH parking is full.

After the Sedona View I did the Airport Loop going clockwise. The sun was just peaking above Snoopy as I was making my way along the eastern edge of the loop. Passed a couple who had set up some expensive photography equipment to capture the moment. It was a little cloudy that morning so I not sure if they were going to get the shot they wanted, but I don't think Sedona could ever give you a bad picture. :) In my opinion the east side is definitely the nicer portion of the loop. There is some up and down as well as some red rock exposure that I wasn't expecting. Very nice for an in city loop. The west side has more vegetation and is composed of the gray volcanic like rock. While on the west I hit the the Table Top Trail. This is an "in" and "out" trail. But I could see where a user trail has developed leading down to what I think would be Red Rock State Park. Discovered that there were two city trails that connect to the NW part of the loop. One was called Bandit trail....can't remember the second. They've been added to the list so I will have to work them in sometime. Wasn't quite what I was expecting, but it was a nice way to finish the vacation.

On my way back from Montana on Allegiant I was able to get some fairly decent video and photos of the route. Some of it will be familiar to you; especially part 2. I have done my best to ID points of interest. Needless to say, it takes hours to put these together especially when I can't figure out what something is. But it's fun to do. The nice thing with this route is it's pretty much the same coming and going.

Allegiant seems like it doesn't fly quite as high so I get closer pictures and videos. I used to drive part of this route back in the 80s. And of course we drove it back in May of 2016 but that was more along Delta's route.

This time I was interested to see anything from the burn area. Surprisingly the burn I saw and retardant was around the Bartlett area. Anyway, enjoy the flight :) .

Videos Great Falls to Phoenix, Allegiant Air:
Part 1 [ youtube video ] Great Falls to Zion including: Missouri, Smith and Jefferson Rivers. Hauser (Canyon Ferry Dam) and Helen Lakes and Lima Reservoir (which is pretty cool looking), Golden Sunlight Mine, Highland and Tobacco Root Mountains, Ruby Range. St Anthony Sand Dunes, Wellsville Mtns, Salt Lake and its landmarks including smaller lakes and mountains, a little airport I couldn't ID, Oquirrh Mountains, Bingham Canyon Kennecott Mine

Part 2 [ youtube video ] Zion to Phoenix/Mesa Gateway via Grand Canyon (Wahalla Plateau, Colorado River near Zoroaster, Plateau Point, Sedona (Mescal Mtn, Jordan TH, Airport Mesa, Vlg of Oak Creek), Camp Verde area, Bradshaws, Tonto Hills, and Bartlett area. Lots of video/photos of Saguaro Lake, First Water area, Battleship, and Western Supes featuring the Flatiron.

Airport loop has been on my list for awhile. One of my regulars was recovering from an ailment and this was just what the doctor ordered. My group was 7 strong this morning for a leisurely trek around the airport and a side trip to the Swiss Cheese caves across Oak Creek. Post hike treats at Randalls in Cottonwood afterwards and an early return to the valley.

angela found a route posted by @pbaenzig from years ago that made a loop off margs draw trail, going along the south side of the snoopy rock formation
we thought we could combine that loop with airport loop for a decent scenic day in sedona
got going around 0900 just as parking was filling up at munds wagon trailhead
took margs draw to the end, then found our use trail on the way back
this segment was quite overgrown with sticker bushes for a good half mile
we also got off trail crossing a wash, resulting in a blair witch circle
eventually we came to a nice flat bedrock area, similar to the cow pies trail bench
quick snack break at the east end of it, then headed west along the base of the rock formations
much of the trail was on nice red rock and reminded us of the hangover trail
we saw some guys up on a high bench and then found another use trail that switchbacked up to it
the trail continued to a saddle above that offered fantastic views of chimney rock, thunder mountain and wilson mountain
we dropped down and linked up with margs draw to finish the loop
great views the entire hike
would recommend a simple out and back on the most scenic parts [ gps route ]
can't think of any reason to do the lower leg of the loop
never did see the snoopy resemblance until angela texted me a photo sunday night
took an appetizer break at the olde sedona bar & grill
drove over to airport mesa
no parking below, so paid $3 to park at the overlook, adding a half mile each way to airport loop
this included a nice climb back out at the end
went to the overlook points first, then clockwise on the loop
nice views to the southeast of cathedral rock, courthouse butte and bell rock, along with oak creek
angela knew i wanted to hit table top, so she generously waited for me while i did the out and back
the west side isn't as scenic, but we had a good breeze and eventual views of doe, bear, chimney rock, thunder and wilson mountains as we circled back to the start
i had done this hike a few years ago, and enjoyed seeing it again
airport mesa is an interesting high point
we saw a few small planes taking off, some of them pretty close
finished uphill then set off for the valley, making good time without much traffic
always a good day in tibber mode; it had been awhile since our last hike and we both like sedona
thanks for driving, angela
we even hit double digits for the day :)

After lunch we headed up to do the Loop to do our second hike of the day. With no parking available at the TH off the road we parked at the overflow up at the airport for $3.

We took the Sedona View connector trail .6 to the Airport Loop. We climbed up to the vista point for a quick moment to take in the views and then headed clockwise on the trail. The trail was rockier than I thot it would be but it's a fun trail that had very little ups and down as it makes it way south and then west up to the mesa top. You have wonderful views but mostly of Cathedral Rock and down to the Creek where the trees are still mostly naked altho the Cottonwoods are starting to leaf out.

Once on the mesa you start veering to the WNW. Kelly did the Table Top spur trail as she had not done that yet. I, on the other hand, opted to plop myself down and put my feet up under a tree. I caught some pictures of the scenery from there, not bad at all. Before I knew it Kelly was knocking at the door and we were on our way down a hill and up a hill and then down a longer hill as we curved around the west side of the mesa. It seemed we went down a lot and I feared we would be doing the opposite to join back up with the road but the up wasn't much and the grade was nice. Of course the views to the north are pretty spectacular to say the least.

We joined up with the Sedona View Trail and headed on up that trail; once again the grade was very nice and there was a bit of a breeze as there had been for a lot of this hike. The views on both of these trails are pretty special and certainly a good 360 of Sedona.

Once back at the lot, we had our beers before heading home after stopping at Circle K to get some snacks. We were lucky that the drive back was pretty effortless which is always a surprise. Thx Kelly for another great day of Sedona hiking.

Video is under production.

Ang, Caleb, Zoe, Tommy and Myself. I think the distance posted is wrong. The loop is about 5 and parking in the top lot adds another mile.

Trail was really well kept. Views are excellent. Pictures are fantastic at dusk. Start the loop at the trailhead across from the parking at mid day. If you go right as dusk is setting in, go with the signs posted as the best views are on that south-west facing ledge.

After our lunch at a local Thai restaurant we headed over to check out the airport loop. Parking is located at the vortex. Its a nice, urban trail, very easy to follow and providing great 360 views of Sedona. Since this is a well maintained trail we are able to make very quick time and soon we are back at the vortex. I had already been to the Vortex before when I had family in town so I figured why not check it out again. There were not too many people at the Vortex so we left and headed out to the next hike.

After lunch at a yummy thai restaurant, we headed over to the Airport. We wanted to make the loop. We parked near the vortex and started in a counter clockwise direction. The trail is in excellent shape and is very easy to follow. We passed several groups returning and then started a mild climb up the west side of the mesa. We eventually topped out and then made the out and back to the southwest corner. This side trip was worth the money and didn't take long. The views are just amazing and this really helped us link together a lot of Sedona. We returned to the main trail and wrapped around the final section. We made a quick stop at the vortex and then returned to the jeep.

The airport hike is right in the center and offers 360 degree views as you loop the mesa. This hike is well worth the effort. We also saw several planes and helicopters take off which was really cool. I have a new sense for Sedona after this.

had time this evening to go up on airport mesa and hike the loop trail
unique route just below the mesa
best views on the southeast side especially at sunset
should have started about 45 minutes earlier to include table top and finish before dark
went up on the overlook anyway
very cool
a fun day with all new trails :)

Aftera dip in the creek at grasshopper point, the crew and I headed out to search for sedona's energy vortexes...vortices...whatevs...our first stop was the one at airport hill, so of course I had to do this little loop!

We eventually ended up atop the hill and were confronted with dozens of...well...hippie stuff!! Rock circles, peace sign cairns...it got crazy fast so we headed back pretty quick.

We found the vortex and sat staring into the sun for an hour waiting to "feel" the energy...we felt something...probably heat stroke :D

Next stop Cathedral Rock.

Visited Sedona with Sarah, Rebecca, and an out-of-town guest. Ended up going to the two Airport vortexes from the nearby parking lot. A very short "hike," but at least I got back out on the trail.
