Linda and I originally planned to hike a Wasson peak loop from Hugh Norris trailhead
But, the trailhead was closed due to a rabid fox in the area
We did the shorter version from king's canyon trailhead
Got going around 0845 up king's canyon trail, then the spur to the peak
Took a snack break and admired the views
Lots of wildflowers along the way
Heliotrope, desert chicory, poppies and lupine
A nice enhancement for the hike
Took Hugh Norris, Sendero Esperanza and Gould mine trails to close the loop
Windy, comfortable temps
Quite a few people hiking
Very enjoyable hike
Thanks for driving linda
No rabid foxes were seen today :scared:

Original plan was to hit Wasson from the Hugh Norris Trailhead. A bitey fox changed those planes, as the lower half of Hugh Norris was closed. Headed over to King Canyon trailhead and got started from there a few minutes later.

Headed up King Canyon. Steady incline, but moderate. The trail is in good condition. Tons of flowers and varieties, which was a nice surprise. Windy at times, but it felt nice.

Took a short snack break at the summit of Wasson. Had to settle for pastrami today since I was all out of steak, but I survived. Headed down Hugh Norris Trail (the open part), then down Sendero Esperanza and Gould Mine. Again, lots of flowers. Saw a fair amount of hikers on all the trails. I like this loop, and would hike it more often if it was a slightly shorter drive. Good day, and always fun to hike with Kelly.

Tired of seeing the perpetually jammed parking lot at King Canyon (even at midday), I decided to head over to Sendaro Esperanza instead. Pretty full there too, but found a spot. I did not notice any wildflowers on the lower part of the trail, but they began to sparsely show up on the switchbacks up to Hugh Norris. Took a nice 30 minute break at the trail junction, taking photos and chatting with numerous hikers. On the way back, I encountered a large group going up that was stopped for a break. Turns out it was a SNP ranger lead hike to Wasson Peak, part of their moon hike series. :)

Hey Tucson Mountains, Picacho Peak is laughing at you for the paltry flower show!
I'm sure it will get better soon! : wink :

That was the best I have felt on a hike in a long time. Plenty of energy and no issues. Yay. :D

Wasson Peak balloon loop with Jim on a warm spring day. Started mid morning from Hugh Norris trailhead. Tons of people out hiking and a few poppies staring to flower. Lunch on the summit, then headed south on Kings Canyon Trail. Turned west and hiked past the Gould Mine. Return on High Norris. Nice hike good workout.

Great day for Wasson! Arrived at 10am and had to wait a half hour for a storm to blow over, then Michelle and I started. Pretty humid for the first hour or so, then it dried out.

I'M EXCITED that as I logged this trip, my AEG on hikearizona.com tipped the 1,000,000 feet mark. Finally!!

Trying to beat back jetlag. Feeling like a zombie on crack.

On trail well before sunrise, but still pretty warm out. The crack-headed half of me saw a snake. Wonder how many I stepped on with the zombie half in charge. Very few people out, but I was done by 0830 on a Sunday.

Wow, lousy pace for this one. Must have taken a nap in there somewhere.

Joined 9L and Chumley for figure 8 loop of Wasson Peak. Great weather on the day with awesome trail starting from the Hugh Norris trailhead on the west side. Few miles into the hike we turned on to Sendaro Esperanza Trail over to the Mam-a-Gah area that had some glyphs in the wash where we checked those out and took a break.

After the break we continued on King Canyon Trail over the Sweetwater Trail and eventually to Wasson Peak summit. Had lunch on the summit with a few other people. Not overly crowded but people were definitely out on the trail. Lunch done we dropped off the top on Hugh Norris Trail again heading down the west side. Did a quick side hike over Amole Peak which was only about 150 feet or so above the trail.

Finishing up the figure 8 we jumped back on Sendaro Esperanza over to the Adobe Wash Trail. We followed that until it hits the road and then connected with Bajada Wash Trail that we hiked on back to the trailhead. Nice to hike some new trails since I'd only previously done Wasson Peak on Sweetwater Trail. Definitely enjoyed the west side trails more than the rest!

Other than a couple of quick trips up flatriron and pie, it occured to me that I haven't hiked on an actual trail since November, other than snowshoeing. Since I'd never hiked Wasson before, it's been on my "sometime whenever it makes sense" list and it seemed to be a good option today.

Hugh Norris was officially annoying in it's insane NPS construction. A million unnecessary steps made what would be a pleasant desert hike into an unbelievable stairmaster of pumpkin. Somebody was bored. For years.

Eventually we got past the overzealous granite stepmaster and enjoyed the day on the mountain. John pointed out some rock art he knew about from a previous trip. The west side is more scenic. The old road grades are less exciting. We took a break on the summit and a few others were there, but not overwhelming. It is a national park, after all.

On the way down, we took a quick detour to Amole Peak. There's a register there, which despite being a named peak, is a bit surprising because it has no elevation or prominence or whatever it is that people typically want to put their name in a jar for.

The lower stretches hit some typically annoying SNPW wash walking and the temps got a bit warmer than preferred. Bajada parallels the park road, and the less-adventurous among the group bailed to check out the rental-car crowd, while the rest of us finished in the wash. We did encounter a very active bee hive in the wash and were quite pleased to pass by without incident.

Good peak, good loop, good weather, good company. Would do again. :)

Sweetwater - Hugh Norris Switchbacks

Dropped Scruff at the vet and was on the trail just before 8

I had the trail mostly to myself, aside from the trail runner that I kept passing (setting up his video clips). In fact when I passed him the last time he was still a quarter mile short of the crest while I was 15 minutes into my return trip - Sort of a tortoise & the hare situation.

It became uncomfortably warm and increasingly busy in the final couple of miles, but they went by fast.

Grabbed the furball on the way home and got on with life.

My room mate got really sick, so I came home to take him to the vet. They wanted keep him for the day, so after a few chores I went for a workout hike. Things started out pretty standard. but pretty soon I ran into snow, around the 3,600 foot mark. There were people everywhere and a lot of passing to do, slowing things down dramatically. The weather today could not be beat, making for a great way to pass a few hours.

Finally broke through the 200 lb floor. :y:
