it has actually been a pretty long time since i have done this classic loop.

meadow trail continues to charm despite the fire. Views from up there were hazy though. birds out in full force!

mt lemmon trail in better shape than anticipated. no real issues all the way out to WOR junction. great views and smattering of flowers though not much. did not see anyone.

wilderness of rocks is in decent shape. very dry though. got hot at times down there but it was still nice to be back.

Lemmon Rock trail: first time up this in quite a while. Overall in better shape than anticipated though there is full exposure now on the bottom half (or so). once you get back in the trees it helps to have some shade. Very steep climb. there is one down tree that covers the trail twice near a switchback. it is kind of tough to get around.

visited the lookout for a few minutes but a big group of kids was gearing up to leave so i hit the road back to lemmon and the end

great day up high on Lemmon

Down the Meadow trail to Mt Lemmon to WoR, back up Lemmon Lookout.

The wildflowers on the Meadow trail were insane.

Burned areas on the lower part of the Mt Lemmon trail were chock full of raspberries too. Yum.

Hung out at Lemmon Creek and poked around near the pools. Not as much water as I’d hoped but it was still flowing.

As advertised, Lemmon Lookout is a butt kicker. Gorgeous trail though. Totally worth it.

With the valley temps finally breaking 100 I thought it was time to choose a hike that started at elevation. Decided that I wanted to go check out Lemmon Pools, but wanted a little more AEG than that hike offered. Original plan was to do a CCW loop of Aspen :next: Meadow :next: Lemmon Rock :next: W.O.R but the Bighorn closures got in the way of that plan!
After following two Trico Electric cherry pickers up the mountain at an infuriating 28 MPH I finally made it to Marshall Gulch around 7am. Shouldered my pack and hit the trail. First time I’ve started at elevation in a long time and could really feel the altitude.

Marshall Gulch was beautiful with good stream flow and lots of green and critters. Best of all there were absolutely no people to disturb the sounds of nature.

After reaching the saddle I started up Aspen. The lower section is more or less as I remember, but the upper section after gaining the ridge top is a wasteland -- the entire south side of the ridge has been destroyed. Construction of the fire line obliterated the switchbacks at the top so it took a bit of extra effort to find and follow them. Exposure was 100% so this is one I wouldn’t want to be doing in the heat of the afternoon.

Walked the roads up top and made my way through Lemmon Park. Stopped there for breakfast and took a few moments to admire the views. Continued on and really enjoyed the narrow stretch of forest in the latter part of the Meadow Trail which hasn’t burned. Sadly it seems like most Catalina hikes are going to be to visit narrow sections of unburned forest surrounded by scorched earth.

Took a left on the Mt Lemmon Trail (road) and headed toward the turnoff for the lookout. Passed Quartzite Spring and was surprised to find it bone dry. There was a little seep from the rock above the pump house, but nothing out of the pipe and no sign of recent flow.

Reached the Lemmon Rock trailhead and came to a closed and locked gate just past the wilderness sign. This is one of the new steel gates that I’ve seen popping up at a number of the Catalina trailheads. No posting of why the gate was locked. I figured that Lemmon Rock would be like the other trails where there was no field indication of the closure, but in this case it would appear that the Forest Service really doesn’t want people on the trail. What’s funny is that the fence extends about 10ft to either side of the gate and then stops so it’s not like the gate is a real obstacle. Plus that detour would put me off-trail which wouldn’t be in violation of anything! Decided not to tempt fate and headed back to and down the Aspen trail.

Once in the W.O.R. my spirits lifted and I enjoyed making my way down into the valley. Fire damage is intermittent with most of the forest in the upper section looking OK, but I swear there are more trees dead or close to dead than there were when I was through here last in November. About halfway between the first creek crossing (where the trail heads south) and the intersection of the Lemmon Rock trail I started seeing some water in the creek. 4 or 5 of the crossings had some water flowing.

Below the Lemmon Rock trail things started looking more and more singed, then outright burnt. This made the trail even more exposed than it had been and it was starting to get warm out there. The ponderosa stands near the last crossing were more or less intact, but a lot of the smaller brush and ground cover was taken out by the fire.

Having never been to the pools I downloaded a GPS track and that would have been great if it weren’t for the fact that my app had a brain fart and all I ended up with was a waypoint. Knowing that the approach was well before the stream crossing I looked for an obvious trail, but couldn’t find anything. There was a cairn on the trail but I couldn’t see an obvious way through the brush. I went a little farther on and then over some rocks into the area above the upper pools. Found a couple of makeshift campsites and eventually found the trail. Checked out the campsite above the main pool then made my way down.

There was a small amount of water over the falls but the flow was slow enough that the pool was starting to look a bit stale. Was going to take a dip, but realized that I forgot to put sunblock in my pack. Knowing the exposure I was facing on the way out I decided to forego the dip in favor of not being rendered extra crispy on the hike out. Next time I’ll be sure to pack sunblock and a pool floaty!

Did some extra scrambling on the way out and then followed what I could find of the use trail back to the main trail. Ended up pushing through the brush right next to the cairn that I passed earlier.

The hike out was a total slog. The temperatures were in the 90s at this point and shade was almost nonexistent until well after the Lemmon Rock intersection. Add in a constant swarm of gnats around my head and I was loving life. Conditions were better above 7500’ but I was beat and really dragging. Fortunately, the last 1.5 miles or so were all downhill!

On the drive out I stopped by Bear Wallow to check on water availability for a backpack I’m planning. Totally dry.

I was looking for a cooler place to hike than the VOS, and decided that Mount Lemmon was a good choice.

We did this loop CCW, and the climb back up to Mount Lemmon on the Lemmon Rock LO Trail was a butt-kicker.

On the way down from Mount Lemmon, while on Mount Lemmon Trail #5 we went past the WOR Trail for about .2 mile to a really cool view point -- it is well worth checking out. On the way to the view point we came across a green mohave rattlerblack-tailed rattlesnake alongside the trail. This snake was not very happy to see us.

We made a side trip to Lemmon Pool -- the water was clear but it was down 10-12 inches from being full, and the waterfall was not running.

Needed to escape the heat in the Valley so we headed to Mount Lemmon! Followed the loop that many others have done: Mt Lemmon/Meadow/Wilderness of Rocks/Lemmon Rock trail. Fabulous hike! I loved each diverse section!! Those last 2 miles were a butt-kicker! Saw a handful of people out on the trails but the trailhead (and surrounding area) was a zoo when we finished. We spent the drive home discussing the pros and cons of doing this Loop in the opposite direction next time.

Quite a nice hike. We got a nice early start as usual, no cars at the trailhead (yeahhh). This is a loop hike and since we were starting at the top of the mountain we knew this would be a down then up hike. down, down we went. we expected the trail to start going back up about at mile 4. The trail did turn back in the right direction, but we bumped along and didn't really start going up until about mile 6, so it was a steep climb out.

It was a nice hike, but this one wore us both out. Not sure if it was because we hadn't hiked for a month or so, or it may have been the altitude, but we were glad to see the car! Although we didn't see anyone on the hike until near the end, there were a ton of cars at the trailhead when we got back at about 11am. This seems to be a popular destination at this time of year, other trailheads were not nearly as full.

This was a really neat hike -- after doing it I remembered how much better and more diverse that hiking in Tucson is as compared to hiking in Phoenix. If I had not known better, I would have thought that I was in East Tennessee or Western North Carolina on part of the hike.

We did the loop counterclockwise, which I think is the best way to do it. Doing it this way, you get to enjoy the views on the Mount Lemmon Trail #5. There are some cool rock formations on the Wilderness of Rocks Trail, and we took an off trail diversion to the Lemmon Pool, which was the highlight of the hike. There was lots of water in the pool, although the flow coming out of the waterfall was a bit light. The hike up the Lemmon Rock Trail was steep and was a butt kicker, but I'd rather go up than go down a steep trail like that.

This was my first time on Mount Lemmon. And for the first time, I learned how to spell "Lemmon."

We descended the Lemmon Rock Trail, which was mostly overgrown. Portions of this trail felt like bushwhacking and the trail itself required a little route finding at times, but it wasn't a big deal. Wilderness of Rocks Trail was the highlight, with lots of water coming down from the higher springs. The upper section of Lemmon Canyon Creek was impressive. I was surprised by how much flow there was this time of year, regardless of recent precipitation.
We found a really cool swimming hole and waterfall just off the WOR and Lemmon Rock intersection: [ photo ].

A couple miles later, I saw a white dog in the distance and my HAZ senses started tingling. Could it be @friendofthundergod ? It was great to finally meet @john9l and Lee!

We climbed back up the ridgeline to the Lemmon summit via the AZT. This is a fun loop, with lots of great views reminiscent of Canyonlands (Big Spring Canyon, specifically) and the Chiricahuas.

With Mount Lemmon Hwy being reopened on Friday, we thought we'd take our friends to do this loop. It did not disappoint. The temperature was in the mid 60's when we got there on the top. It did get a bit warm on the hike in sections exposed to the sun at times. But for the most part, we had cloud cover and/or vegetation cover. All the little streams were flowing nicely. We had about 15 minutes of down pour when we started the last couple of miles of climbing back up. The rain then moved on. It got muggy where there was no breeze. All the colors became even more vibrant after the rain! This was such a beautiful hike. We did wander a lot, but my GPS seemed to be way off. Not sure what was going on.

I finally convinced my group of Ingress buddies to come out on a hike with me. There are two ingress portals at the Mt. Lemmon Fire Lookout, which is a nice, short hike that will get your blood pumping.

When we arrived at the trailhead around 10:00am, there were only 2 other cars in the parking lot, a good sign that not many hikers would be on the trail. We headed out on the trail clockwise with ugly weather moving in. It was pretty windy up at the parking lot and a good portion of the hike down. About halfway to the lookout, the trees really helped buffer the wind.

The hike down is pretty easy, with a pretty good drop in elevation. We arrived at the lookout and peeked around a bit, typically the cabin and immediate vicinity is off limits, but our good fortune brought us on a day when there were several employees there. They were very kind to share some history with my teenage daughter and let me sneak down to the cool, secret lookout bench on the side to take pictures.

We shared sandwiches and chatted with the forest fellows, who informed us that there was an active rescue operation beginning there on the mountain. He mentioned there might be a lot of traffic on the road soon, so we took that as a cue to head on out. :)

The hike back got my blood pumping and I didn't really feel the wind much as it was at my back on the way up. Some of my friends took lots of time to get back up, they mentioned that it was a steep walk back. So perhaps allow for lots of time to walk back at a leisurely pace.

What's a holiday weekend without a trip to Fraleyland? Stiller posted all the specifics so I'll cover the general. We started early and the traffic was light so we got good parking. The start was chilly and I put on a windbreaker for the first mile. The hike in was nice and shaded with only a few others on the trail. We refueled (aka lunch) by Romero pass (5800 ft) before the hike backup (9100 ft). Hiking back up in full sun and no breeze was somewhat more taxing than the stroll down. The scenery is nice and the trails fairly easy to follow but having a GPS was good for backup. There are a few forested areas on the return to cool down and I soaked my shirt in the creek which was very cool. The graded wasn't too crazy and I kept chugging along. Once at the 8000 foot level it was cooler and the breeze kicked in. While resting near the top I saw Bifrost and Slowandsteady walking past. I yelled "Karl" and annoyed them for a bit. Soon after Chris made it back and we headed back.

It is a long slog from Romero Pass back up to the top of Mt. Lemmon.

Having a 3 day weekend, I wanted to make another trip back down to Tucson to explore this area a little more. It's always a long day getting there from Mesa, mostly due to the traffic through Tucson. I picked the Mt. Lemmon/Lemmon Rock loop, and decided to add a spur of the Mt. Lemmon Trail, taking it all the way down to Romero Pass, where it junctions with the Romero Canyon Trail. I had been there over 6 years ago with johnlp and groth, when we did Romero Canyon. Today Wally was the only person who was crazy enough to try this hike with me.

The official track for the loop says about 8.3 miles and 2300' AEG. When I found another track for the Mt. Lemmon Trail, the added distance and AEG for the spur I wanted looked it would add about another 3.4 miles (making a total of 11.7 for the day), and maybe another 1000' AEG. It turned out to be a total of 12.7 miles, and over 4000' of AEG :-k . I am feeing it the next day, haven't been this sore for a long time. While my hikes last year and this year have picked up in mileage, they have also gone down in terms of AEG, so I paid for that on this hike.

We got an early start to the day and ended up at the Mt. Lemmon TH at 7:30am, before the hordes arrived. We took the Meadow Trail 5A as recommended by Fricknaley in his description. It is very nice with the meadows and very shady sections. The temperature was cool enough at the start that wally even wore his windbreaker for a little bit.

We got to the junction of the Wilderness of Rocks Trail fairly quickly, and continued our way down to Romero Pass. The trail quickly got steeper, narrower, and harder to walk on with the loose footing. My knees and toes were starting to hurt on the way down and it seemed to take forever to get to Romero Pass, which we could see from a half mile up the trail. Still, we arrived at Romero Pass less than three hours after we started hiking. It would take much longer to hike back out. :stretch:

After our lunch at Romero Pass, we started the slog back uphill. That section of the Mt. Lemmon Trail back up to the junction of the WOR trail was relentless. The shade we had just an hour or so before was all mostly gone by now, making the temps just warm enough to make it a little harder to hike. The WOR Trail gave us a break from the climbing, with some fairly level hiking and a few more downhill spots. Some of the downhill spots were steep enough to require more effort than I was in the mood for at that point. There were a lot of nice stream crossing along this trail, and in one spot I saw some tadpoles, which would amount to all the wildlife I got to see on this hike. I spent some extra time taking some photos of the water and the rock formations along this trail.

Finally I arrived at the junction of the Lemmon Rock Trail, and the last section of the grueling slog back up was before us. It starts out gradually enough, but soon you're in the steep section, navigating the switchbacks. At this point I was just moving in slow motion. I wanted to try to move quicker, but my body wouldn't cooperate. I just kept going, taking breaks when necessary. it didn't help that about halfway up, I ran out of water.

Once you reach the dirt road, and get back on the Mt. Lemmon Trail, the climbing isn't done. It's really not much, but after getting off the Lemmon Rock Trail, it seems like a lot. Once we finally arrived back at the parking lot, I was surprised to see how crowded it was seeing as we didn't see many hikers on the trails. The Labor Day horde of tourists had arrived in full force, and were occupying all the parking spaces, picnic tables, bathrooms, etc. As Wally and I took our time changing shoes and shirts, and rehydrating, drivers would enter and exit the small lot and hover like a Costco shopper on a Saturday afternoon. We finally got out of the lot, only to see the traffic parked all along both sides of the road for a quarter mile. One SUV had parked right on the edge of the road and slid into a ditch, getting stuck and left abandoned.

We followed the traffic all the way back down the Catalina Highway, and thru Tucson. Once we were back on 79 north, it was an easier drive. Got home by 7:30pm, just enough time to throw the steaks on the grill, and have an Arizona Trail Ale, which seemed like an appropriate choice since we had actually hiked on the AZT earlier in the day.

Mike, Kim, and I joined a couple of our friends on their wilderness of rocks hike. We went down Mt Lemmon #5 to the wonderful lunch spot past the junction with the WOR. Then we went back and went down the WOR trail to Lemmon Creek. The three of us continued to Lemmon Pools and played a while. We all met back at the cars and co to eyed to NYPD Pizza for dinner! Wonderful day!

Beautiful hike today on Mount Lemmon. Hiked with Randy Park and Susan Hollis. Not sure what to call this loop. Left the Mount Lemmon Trailhead at Steward Observatory parking lot and headed down to Lemmon Rock Lookout Trail, then looped west on the Wilderness of Rocks Trail and returned on Mount Lemmon Trail #5 and Meadow Trail #5A. Beautiful breeze and scattered clouds. Temps in 60's and low 70's. Fair amount of haze in the air that obscured distant mountain ranges. Still some water running in the creeks.

All day grinder to the summit and back. Up RC#8 and ML#5 then a counter-clockwise loop around WOR#44, LR#12, summit and Meadow#5A, then back down ML#5 and RC#8. Especially enjoyed all the gorgeous granite formations in WOR.

Other than some downed trees, trails are in good condition. Moderate water flow in Romero Canyon, good pools and light creek flow at several places along WOR#44.

My second day on the mountain and "I'm felling much better now" ;) . I had a great recovery nap last night, and had no plan as of 08:00, so I grabbed the laptop, headed to Ski Valley and used my phone to pipe in a track. I knew I was limited in several ways, but picked the best route for my general needs. Great Choice! I'm not gonna go into detail here, but this trek was the conception of a "Peak of Summer", Mega-Loop, in the the upper-front range of the Cat's. The high elevation diversity along this route cannot be matched. I plan to refine this into a Description, where I'll be much more specific in the transitions (soon to come)...
Incredible day in the high of the low country. :y:
