Nice day out with Michelle. Pretty quiet once we left the preserve and was in the wilderness. Hiked to Bear Saddle and the junction of the AZT.

I finally decided I wanted to see some Fall foliage, so off to tried and true Ramsey Canyon it was. I left Tucson at 0730, but should have left at 0700. I got to the parking lot at 0920, and it was nearly full (which didn't surprise me in the least), but I lucked out and found a spot. Enjoyed taking my time working up through the preserve, then headed to the overlook and down into the canyon again to enjoy the section to the Brown Canyon Trail junction. This is my usual turn around spot. As has been noted by others, the colors are a bit understated this year. Doesn't matter though, it's all good. :D Not too many people were encountered past the overlook, but it was really crowded with folks in the main preserve section. I had some nice random conversations with strangers along the way (something I like to do). Always a pleasant, peaceful experience when I visit this special place. :)

Back for more Huachuca goodness. Quality loop with nice Fall colors and flowing water along lower Ramsey and Pat Scott. The Preserve is currently only open from 9 to 4 and the visitor center is closed, put your fee in the box.

A bit too early for peak colors. If you wait a couple of weeks should be close to peak. There are lots of maples in Ramsey, Pat Scott and Wisconsin Canyons.

Day 7 of our 8-day SE AZ road trip. Today was to be our last big hike. The Ramsey Canyon B&B had played host to us the previous night and would again tonight. Located right next to the Preserve, it was the optimum base for enjoying Ramsey Canyon. After a great breakfast, we shouldered our packs and walked over to the Preserve.

Seems we were lucky in our timing. First Saturdays are free admission at the Preserve. They were also having a guided nature walk. Might be a good idea. But when we discovered it was 2 hours and covered a half mile, we opted out. Would have loved to hear all the good info, but we wanted miles.

The creek was flowing nicely which gave us that wonderful mountain stream background sound off and on all day. Some random clouds were moving quickly across the peaks and saddles above us and providing nice shade in the few open places on the trail. Combined with ample tree cover from the sycamores, spruce, pine, oaks, junipers and madrones. The conditions were perfect for a good hike.

Did the little side loops off the mail trail in the Preserve checking out all the abandoned buildings left over from the long history of people enjoying this canyon. Some birders were out along the trail, but fewer than usual according to the B&B owner. We tried to be quiet and not intrude. Hit the first real incline and topped out at the overlook. There's some interesting geology on display across the canyon.

Dropped back down to the creek and it was really flowing nicely. Even found a very nice bubbling spring off to the south of the creek. There were still areas of bright wildflowers and a hint here and there of Fall color to come.

Veered off on Pat Scott to check out the old mine and equipment. Looks like they even had a small stamp mill here for crushing the ore. We weren't convinced we wanted to do the whole loop, so after a bit we turned back.

At the lower end Pat Scott we didn't really want to start back down, so we went further up Hamburg. After a bit we took stock of our time and energy remaining. We were only .68 (straight line) below Bear Saddle. MJ wanted to go to the top and I didn't see any reason why not, so up we went. Hamburg is steep in this area, so we were huffing and puffing when we met three hikers coming down, (now I think it was knnorby's group). They told us they'd seen a large black bear over on Pat Scott earlier. The bear was totally nonaggressive. Damn we should have gone on up. However, the news put MJ on high alert. A LARGE pile of scat in the trail didn't help her much. But we pressed.

The wind at the saddle was really howling. A 100 feet on the trail below the saddle was nearly calm. MJ held onto her hat while doing a Chevy Chase looking into the Grand Canyon imitation and headed back down. I took some photos and enjoyed the view for a few moments more and followed her down. We snacked sitting a convenient rock with big grins on our faces.

The trip down was uneventful, much easier, and just a beautiful. As we got close to the trailhead there were lots of people taking afternoon hikes. Certainly was a great day for it.

Back at the B&B there was a fresh cherry pie set out. The Ramsey Canyon B&B is known for their daily pies. Tough decision ahead -- post hike beer and then pie or pie then beer??? Why is life so difficult? (Decision was tiny slice of pie, beer, then larger slice of pie. A perfect solution is not always available, but when it is just go for it.)

I like Ramsey. We will be back for more.

Mike, Joel, and I did a nice leisurely (for us) hike. We saw three turkeys, a bear, and a deer. The creek was up higher than when I was there last. It was a beautiful day. A bit windy in the crest but that didn't affect us much. Mike and I checked out some of the mining ruins while Joel took a nap.

Ramsey Canyon is a canyon I've been meaning to explore for quite some time. The last time I attempted to hike here the preserve, managed by The Nature Conservancy, was closed due to flooding from the tropical storms that hit southeast AZ back in September. I instead hiked into Ramsey Canyon via Brown Canyon and thoroughly enjoyed it. This time everything worked out. Other than a steady drizzle from a slow moving winter storm all was well. And honestly, the rain felt quite nice and the water saturated all the fall colors in the canyon making for a spectacular first couple of miles.

I took my time to enjoy the early winter "autumn" leaves. The caterpillars in Miller Canyon, just two canyons to the south, had devastated the big-tooth maple and the colors were muted at best. I expected the same for Ramsey. In fact I thought most leaves had already changed and dropped except the low elevation cottonwoods near where I live. I was pleasantly surprised to find lower Ramsey Canyon at near peak color and as I mentioned the rain seemed to deepen the hues.

This is a well managed and spectacular canyon. The range of diversity in these eastern slope Huachuca canyons is phenomenal. Leaving the preserves western boundary I hooked up with the Hamburg Trail and passed the junction that heads north toward Brown Canyon. Low, wispy clouds seemed to tangle on the pines, breaking open momentarily to reveal the high canyon walls and Ramsey Peak. The rain, naturally, became heavier as I climbed. The large fir trees near the junction of Comfort Springs, Wisconsin, and Pat Scott trails at Hamburg Meadows served as nice canopy and respite from the elements.

The rain became heavier as I climbed the Pat Scott trail toward the Crest Trail. I retreated under a rock ledge in the wash near the Crest Trail junction and watched the rain, trying not to take it for granted and to be grateful for such a long, soaking, winter rain. In the end I turned back, a little disappointed to not finish the loop (the only section now to hike being the Hamburg/Wisconsin trail to Bear Saddle/Crest Trail) but looking forward to coming back.

Earlier this week Randy (RWStorm) issued me a challenge to come down to Tucson and go for a scenic hike in the Huachuca Mountains with him. With all the heat in the Valley, I needed a break and a hike above the 7,000 foot level sounded just about right. I drove to Tucson and met up with Randy, switched vehicles and off we went.

Randy drove to Ramsey Canyon Preserve, a nature conservancy nestled in a narrow canyon a short distance from Huschuca City. Entry to the Preserve is through the main building where they collect a $6.00 fee per person which is used to fund the operation. The Preserve is famous for it's abundant wildlife that inhabits the lush narrow canyons. However, on this particular day, we didn't see any of the thousands of Hummers and only a few of the hundreds of bird species and only a couple of the thousands of Butterfly's (can I get my $6.00 back?)

As we walked down the trail we were soon surprised by a couple of deer that crossed the trail only a few feet in front of us, stopped briefly, then continued on their way. We were both so stunned that neither of us managed to get our cameras out and snap a shot before they nonchalantly walked off into the dense brush (OK maybe you can keep the $6.00 after all).

The trail continues on past some early 1900's cabins that are slowly decaying back into oblivion. The cabins were build by miners who sought the cool narrow canyon and the convenience of nearby running water in Ramsey Creek. A toll road was build that connected the housing area with the remote mining area a couple of miles further up the canyon.

The trail system through the Conservancy is fairly short and soon you find the start of the Hamburg Trail which, after a short distance, leaves the Preserve and continues up to a scenic overlook where you can view some of the nearby peaks and the canyon below. From the overlook, we could hear the sounds of falling water down below us so we continued on down the well shaded trail until we were again at the creek.

The trail was once the toll road although it presently has large trees growing in it, at one time it was the main conduit for the heavy mining equipment that had to be brought up to the mining area.

Randy and I were in no hurry and paused often to get photos of the amazingly huge Sycamores surrounded by lush creekside foliage. We may have missed the sounds of birds but that was replaced by the relaxing sounds of flowing water. We continued up the trail, but we noticed that we were running low on time (Randy had lots of other stuff to show me) so we turned around before we reached the mines.

Back at Randy's car, we drove on over to Carr Canyon Road that contains a dizzying number of hairpin switchbacks and presents you with amazing views of the distant mountain ranges and peaks (And Randy knows the names of all of em). A Helium filled blimp floated above us that contains a radar system that is on the lookout for airborne drug smugglers. It's a kinda cool leftover from another era and is being replaced by drones looking for illegal entrants and drug smugglers who are known to frequent the area.

We reached the top of the mountain where Randy showed me his favorite camping spot where he has set out numerous times on those hikes that are published within these same pages. Then it was back down off the mountain, and a scenic return trip to Tucson where we had a satisfying Mexican style dinner and a couple of cold beers to top everything off.

We had lots of fun on this day, it's unfortunate that we ran so short on time as Randy had a full itinerary of interesting stuff to show me. Thanks for the break from the hot weather Randy, I hope we get the opportunity to resume where we left off.

Talk about a rare opportunity! :o Jack is almost never down here in the summer months, so I wanted to show him something down this way in its summer finest. :) So back to the Huachucas it was! :D Not wanting to do the hikes I had just done with Kelly, I thought it would be cool to head down to the Nature Conservancy Preserve in lower Ramsey Canyon and hike up canyon on the Hamburg Trail to where it meets the Comfort Springs Trail at the old mining area. The reason for this was two-fold: I knew it would give him a great introduction to the range by hiking in a shaded canyon with a running stream, and though I get down to the preserve on occasion, I haven't hiked the trail toward Hamburg in over 30 years! Thunderstorms failed to develop (drat!), so being in the shade of the beautiful canyon was welcome.

Because I also wanted to get Jack up that thrill ride of a road in nearby Carr Canyon, we turned back just before we got to the Comfort Springs trail junction. But what a treat it was to hike in here! I couldn't believe how much Scouring Rush (horsetail) was growing along the stream in its perennial sections. I can see why it is considered one of the crown jewels of this range. After returning to the visitor center where I purchased an updated trail guide, it was off to Carr Canyon and one of my favorite roads! :scared:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNWj7452UpY

After showing Jack the two campgrounds and pointing other things of interest, it was back down the mountain for the drive to Tucson. On the way there in the morning I drove down on highway 90, but returned via the scenic route through Sonoita, so Jack could see the green grasslands that stretch for miles in that area. We stopped in South Tucson for Mexican food at Rigo's before he headed home. (Sorry Kelly, but we didn't get a picture of our food.)

So glad you got to see this in summer Jack! :)

Sensory. Overload. This is my nearly annual (for the past 23 years) August hike up to at least Carr Peak, sometimes more, to immerse myself in the joy of full blown monsoon wildflower madness! This year I decided to extend the hike, reprising my June 1990 route on which I ended up with the worst case of hypothermia I ever had the displeasure of experiencing. That definitely was on my mind today as the thunderstorms roamed around.

Started the day by stopping at the McDonalds on SR92 near Buffalo Soldiers Trail to fuel up on a sausage biscuit, hash brown, and small coffee off the cheap menu. Then up the mountain to start the hike at Ramsey Vista CG. I usually do this loop in a clockwise direction, but today I wanted to avoid the exposure on the recently burned Carr Peak portion, and head into the more shaded Comfort Spring/Ramsey Canyon first. With my rather late 1045 start time, it was already warm, so I figured I would have some cloud cover and cooler temperatures when I was doing the serious uphill sections. This worked out just fine. I also wanted to see if the hike seemed any easier in this direction. It did not. The pull up from the 6700 foot level at Hamburg to Bear Saddle via Wisconsin Canyon is pretty brutal. Even after that the section from Bear Saddle to the junction with the Carr Peak Trail has its moments. The section from there to the Carr Peak connector trail is very mellow by comparison (and today made more interesting by a BP helicopter flying around the canyons and peaks and buzzing me..I waved). I did enjoy knowing that my last 3.5 miles back to the car would be all downhill. :)

One thing I did this trip was to take a short side trip up to ruins of the Hamburg Mine. Hadn't been there since the 1990's and things were pretty much the same, except for more debris been washed away by flooding. As I approached this area it began to thunder over Ramsey Peak and rain lightly. Made me wonder what would happen later in the day when I was up on the exposed areas near Carr Peak. As it turned out the rain ended quickly and I encountered no more the rest of the hike.

This was a photo hike and I was moving very slowly. In fact my pace was so slow I think it might have made even Tibber impatient! There were just too many flowers to resist! I was pretty tired when I hit Bear Saddle, so I took a brief break and opened a beer, which I nursed along the Crest Trail over to the Carr Peak Trail junction. Nice new thunderstorms had fired up to my south over behind Miller Peak, but they stayed there. After rounding Carr Peak (which I skipped this trip) I spooked a bear that was in the aspen zone. Didn't see him, but when I yelled out, he took off grunting and puffing away from the trail. One of the highlights of the Carr Peak portion of the hike is the exceptional run of columbines in the aspen section just below a little waterfall and stream crossing. This year was the best I've ever seen it, stretching further than usual! :D I kept savoring the flower show on the way down, eventually reaching the car as it was almost dark. What a terrific day! :y:

The only people I saw on the trail the whole day were a couple of BP guys coming up from Comfort Spring at the beginning and two Army guys hiking up late in the day about 2 miles from the parking lot.

I think maybe my photoset will upset Tibber a little, as she originally was going to be a part of this. I had told her how fantastic this place was in August. ;) However, that would have been a more involved car camp, and I decided to just make a day trip down there...much easier.

We went on a car camping trip led by Wendy with ABC. Before this I had only met Wendy once at an ABC meeting at Bario. We've been friends on Facebook and obviously seen each other on HAZ.

After driving down from Tucson, we picked our campsites in the Ramsey Vista Campground. Then we headed up to Carr Peak. Angela and I really got into photo mode and stopped several times to enjoy the view and take photos. We did see some of the damage done by last year's fire.

We hung out on top for a bit for lunch then we parted ways. Wendy and Angela did the shorter loop since it was Wendy's first trip out after nursing her toe. The rest of us did the longer loop.

I had a hard time shaking photo mode, so I continued to stop and take pictures. I tried to force myself into not stopping as many times.

This was the first time I had done this section of the Crest Trail. It was absolutely wonderful. I had been bracing myself for burn area after burn area but I was pleasantly surprised to find that the rest of the journey hadn't seen fire in a long time (or if it had it was just a gentle fire).

At one point, there was a bit of commotion in which I nearly stepped on a baby bird. I made sure no one else stepped on him and then we left so the screaming mom could figure out what to do. Hopefully, the little feller was a survivor! Wendy and Angela said they didn't see it so I suspect he managed to get off the trail and somewhere safe.

After Bear saddle we saw some really big trees. It was nice to see old growth when you were thinking you'd just see charred growth. Our friend, Douglas, patted and spoke to each one :)

The trek down Pat Scott Canyon was again beautiful. We paused at the Hamburg mine site and then continued on to camp. The last section was a killer. We had to go up again and then down again and then up again. There also wasn't much for shade in spots because of the direction of the sun.

Douglas is kind of new to longer hikes so I hung back and made sure he made it out. I could tell the heat was sapping his strength. He hung in and made it back to camp without too many problems. Later he showed me his 3 black toenails :stretch: I showed him the sherpa knot so that he might be able to keep the boots a little while longer.

We hung out around one table to have happy hour. Angela made us all yummy drinks. Then it came time to make dinner. Joel and I had an elaborate pizza to make. I spent a long time trying to concentrate on the directions as I tend to screw things up because I don't read everything. Luckily, I read everything correctly and we managed to get a decent looking pizza. It went well with my wine.

Not long after dinner, I went to bed with a headache. I am pretty sure I was dehydrated and the alcohol didn't help any. I did wake up later and everything was back to normal!

I really enjoyed the trip! It was really nice to get to know Wendy and Angela offline :)

What a wonderful loop! Trail is in great condition and as of 9/17/11 the section of the Crest Trail used in this loop is garbage-free.
On some hikes I occasionally feel that I 'endure' some sections to get to the 'good parts'; not so with this loop - I enjoyed every step and every view.
Bear sighting near, you guessed it, Bear Saddle.

I would suggest using SR83 and SR82 through Sonoita for at least ONE of your routes; the scenery is awesome and you will lose little if any travel time vs. 90/I-10.

Okay, I wasn't going to do a trip report on this one, but since there are questions, here goes: My source for info is the "Hikers Map of the Huachuca Mountains" by Leonard Taylor. Using the map the route we took comes in at 12.4 miles; Liz got 11.6 off the gps, so split the difference and call it a 12 mile loop. It is about 1900 feet from the trailhead to Carr Peak, but of course we made this into a really nice loop hike that made the accumulated elevation gain about 3600 feet (using the topo map). That is probably pretty close to reality for all you detail freaks. The highest point of the hike was Carr Peak at about 9230 feet (I have seen this listed as 9205 and 9230, so your choice). Our lowest point on the journey was down in Ramsey Canyon, at the point where the Hamburg Trail meets the Carr Canyon Trail, and this is at about 6600 feet. We finished the hike at about the same elevation as where we started: about 7200 feet. We started hiking at about 935 AM and finished at 615 PM.

The hike involved a short (1.5 mile) car shuttle so we could do the section from Reef Townsite to the Carr Peak Trail, as is goes by the very lush and scenic Old Sawmill Spring, which is a birdwatching mecca (not to mention a spot where certain people with flower fetishes can snap away until the cows come home).

From Reef Townsite we took the Old Sawmill Trail #126 0.7 miles to its junction with the Carr Peak Trail #107. Then 3.4 miles up the mountain on the Carr Peak Trail to the junction with the Crest Trail #103 (after a side trip on the spur trail #108 to Carr Peak for a total RT of 0.6 mile). The section of trail from the spur to the peak over to the junction with the Crest Trail just above Tub Spring is a real nice arcing glide down to about 8600 feet (knock your socks off beautiful in late August with hillsides of yellow flowers). Now on the Crest Trail, we generally descended 1.2 miles to Bear Saddle at about 8100 feet. The next 2 mile section of the Crest Trail involved a nice gradual uphill route along the ridge to the junction with the Pat Scott Canyon Trail #123. This junction is at about 8500 feet just west of Pat Scott Peak (one of the two and the one I consider the correct one :M2C: ). Curiously, when we were doing a camp/hike here in May 2009, a small lightning caused fire was burning in this saddle, and we had to cut our planned hike short. It is the only time I have ever hiked toward a forest fire. What is weird is to see how little fire damage there was at this spot, when last year we were there with helicopters doing bucket drops and a crew chainsawing in the smoke and fire. At the time it was quite dramatic. Down the Pat Scott Canyon Trail sharply for 2.1 miles to its junction with the Hamburg Trail #122 in upper Ramsey Canyon. This is a very scenic section of trail, with outstanding views of the south cliff face of Ramsey Peak in the upper portion, and a lush riparian zone along the creek in the lower part. We were briefly on the Hamburg Trail (0.1 mile) until the junction with the Carr Canyon Trail #109. This represented the lowest elevation point of the hike. Now on the home stretch, we had to slog along two uphill sections for 2.3 miles to reach the shuttle car at Ramsey Vista campground. The heaviest rain of the entire hike was at the finish from Comfort Spring.

I will say this about the two days down there: it was great to get out of the heat and play around in the rain and cool mist, but I was greatly disappointed that we didn't get treated to some raging thunderstorm action and a good light show Saturday night. :gun:

We headed down to the Reef Townsite campsite on Saturday and set up camp. Took a couple short walks on the interpretive trail and to see some of the cliffs where the frogs croak. When darkness fell, we headed back up that way, checking out the city below us and hoping for some neat lightning that never came. Headed back down to the cliffs for a nighttime concert presented to us by the frogs. Then made our way back to camp for a cozy fire and chitchat.

The next morning we awoke bright and early, tore down camp, and set up for a shuttle. Randy followed me up while I parked my car at the Ramsey Vista campground. We met Cindy and Joel back at the Old Sawmill Trail and started our journey up to Carr Peak. We had a lot of clouds, but some sun and lots of humidity going up. The views at the top are nice and look out to the city below. We stopped for some pictures and snacks and then headed down to start the long journey to Crest Trail, Bear Saddle, then Pat Scott Canyon Trail where we descended into the beautiful abyss. Took that trail to Hamburg Trail and Carr Canyon Trail, where we met up with the car. Soaked from the constant rain, dirty, and tired, we came upon the car with confusion as someone had left a fresh bouquet of wildflowers there on the windshield. A secret admirer? A birthday gift for Cindy? A simple friendly "hello" from someone we had passed on the trail earlier? The world may never know. We finished off the trip in town with some well-deserved delicious Italian food before parting ways.

I had a really great time, especially for my very first time (gasp) south of Chandler.. yes, I have never been south before and it was a lot of fun exploring it with this group! As always, I very much enjoyed hiking with Randy, and it was great to meet Cindy and Joel. Thanks for the wonderful time, guys. =)

The camping: It was so wet. We've all been doing a rain dance here in Tucson, and the Huachuca Mountains had it going on. We camped at the Reef Townsite group site, which was amazing for the four of us. We each had 1.5 picnic tables under the huge ramada, which came in handy during the rains. The rains were drenching - not the typical monsoon-type storm where it would be gone in a half hour. But I was fine with the lack of an electricity in the sky. The rains did eventually stop and we had a little fire and managed to stay up until about 11:30.

We had our coffee, ate, packed up our wet camp, and headed to the trailhead - both of them. The hike that Randy had planned required a car shuttle since we hadn't gone and seen the special bird watching spring the night before.

The hike (near as I could remember - I don't have map of the area - I let Randy plan this one): Old Sawmill Spring Trail #126 (the first part was brutal, but worth it) to Carr Peak Trail #107. Trail No. 188 to the Peak and back to Carr Peak Trail 107 to Crest Trail #103 (AZT). We took the Crest Trail past Bear Saddle and then on and on for what seemed like eternity. We finally made it to the Pat Scott Trail to Comfort Springs Trail and back to the Ramsey Vista campground. Again, I could be wrong - I was hoping that Randy or Liz would post a triplog so I could get it right... (Edit: See Randy's triplog at http://hikearizona.com/x.php?I=4&UID=&O ... 52916&ZTN= for a better description).

The weather was wonderful. Yes, it was a little wet, and at the end, we all were alot wet. No lightning, so it was a success. There were times that we were walking into the fog and mist and it was absolutely beautiful. It was exactly what this Tucsonan needed to celebrate her birthday.

As always, it was good to hike with Randy and Joel, and it was very nice to meet Liz - a new friend.
