I've wanted to hike the full length of National Trail as an out-and-back for a while but had been looking for an open day with cooler temps, and today checked both boxes. I started from Pima Canyon TH by flashlight just after 5AM, and the petrichor was almost overwhelming after the rain yesterday, and trail conditions were in the damp-to-moist range over the first few miles. Nice city views, then even nicer sunrise views as I passed Buena Vista Lookout.

Not too many people out yet around Telegraph Pass, and I passed a few mines and then took a food/water break and shed a layer on Goat Hill at ~7:30AM. The weather was perfect for long hike, and I could still see my breath while I was up there. I'd never been west of Goat, so that was all uncharted territory as I continued west on National and lost a lot of elevation along the way. That side of SoMo is quieter but less interesting once it leaves the Gila Range...nice views of the Estrellas, but also the 202 and the casino.

I hit the west end of National at San Juan Lookout at 9AM and continued down toward the road, then came back and took another food/water break near the shelter. It was still early and I was feeling good, so I started up Alta to visit Maricopa Peak, the high point in the Hawk Tuah range. That was a steady gain all the way up, and I took a longer food/water break on top and enjoyed the views. I noticed two reference marks up there but couldn't find a benchmark...probably stolen.

Then the long hike back, down Alta and east on the full length of National. The stretch going back up to Goat Hill felt long and steep, and I shed the final extra layer around mile 23. I had to dodge more people near Telegraph, then the trails were quieter again. I took a final break near Buena Vista Lookout, then finished it off, getting back to the starting point just before 3PM.

Fun day seeing some new terrain on the west side of SoMo and getting reacquainted with the tail end of my playlist with the longer day :). The high temp was ~65°, about as nice as it'll get this time of year for a long SoMo hike. This exceeded my previous longest hike by 10+ miles, but I felt good and didn't have any cramping...carried 223oz of liquids, drank a little over 150oz. The storms yesterday left Four Peaks and various ranges covered in snow...I really wished I'd brought a real camera to get better pictures--it's tempting to go back out tomorrow just for that.

It didn't look like my schedule for the upcoming week would give me a chance to hike any mornings before work, so I decided to get out on Labor Day and hike to Goat Hill, a new one for me. It's a longer hike and the weather is still hot, but I figured if I started early and kept a decent pace, I'd finish before it got too bad. I started ~5AM, and there was just enough light--and enough hikers/bikers with flashlights--that I never turned mine on, then clear skies and a nice sunrise.

The trails were quiet as I got farther out on National, then traffic picked up again as I approached Telegraph Pass. It had been years since I'd been there, and this was my first time hiking in from Pima Canyon. I'd never hiked the SoMo trails west of there, so I was into new territory beyond Telegraph Pass, and it was nice to get some new scenery.

I reached Goat Hill ~2.5 hours after I started and took a break up there to enjoy the views while I ate second breakfast, then started back ~8AM. The return hike was uneventful, and it was warm by the end but not terribly hot yet when I finished ~10:30AM. I didn't see any interesting wildlife today, but it was a nice longer outing exploring some new areas.

Early morning hike at SoMo. I hadn’t done this hike in awhile so I thought it was time to revisit it. Changed it up a little bit, by starting at the Javelina TH. Got started around 6am. I took user trails and Beacon connector trail to work my way over to the Pima Wash TH. No headlamp needed, thanks to the city lights. In fact, the lights were somewhat blinding. My night vision came and went depending how the how the hills interacted with the surrounding lights. Coyotes were saying “good night” within minutes of me getting on the trail. Odd. It sounded as if they were east of the Pima Wash TH, which would have placed them among the homes :? . Once I hit the Pima Wash TH I took the National to Goat Hill. I made decent time to about Holbert Trail. My knees were talking from the get go and I started listening to them around Holbert. Discovered that the Park has added a new trail to their repertoire. :y: About 1.2 miles past Buena Vista Lookout, there is a trail called Gila Vista Lookout. It takes off to the south, heading in the direction of the towers. I didn’t check it out, but it is now on the radar. (I think Buena Vista would be the closest spot to access this trail). I hit Goat Hill and talked briefly with a young man named Angel. On the way back I was briefly on the Mormon trail to connect to the Javelina trail which I took back to the TH.

I must have missed the memo that it was family day at SoMo. Trails weren’t too bad on the way out to Goat Hill. Saw 18 hikers and 3 bikers. On the way back I encountered over 50 hikers and 20 bikers!…. On a Wednesday! Most seemed to be heading (to or from) Hidden Valley. I met 6 groups of 4 or more in that area ranging from grandparents to rugrats. Great weather. No clouds, little breeze, but nice temps. Minimal wildlife….quail, lizards and chipmunks.

We explored three of legendary Mike's main routes to his airy mountaintop, but the hunt was futile. Either he's hanging out with Billy the Kid, perhaps taking a nap in the soft, abundant grass or has been kidnapped by desperados. Maybe next time...

i had one day to get in an overdue long run and the weather is tucson was a fail. luckily things looked significantly better at south mountain and i was able to get there quickly enough

National is a great trail to run.nice and green out there. saw people and bikers scattered about. had my eye out for JJ, Denny, Trekkin or Linda but no dice.

started off feeling rough but ended up pretty good.

south mountain is a wonderful winter playground with all of the trails.

I hit this trail around 5am. Cool out but a long sleeve shirt was fine. National looks like it had some work between Holbert and Telegraph but could use a little more. The variety of color in the morning sky was just awesome. Weather was mostly overcast with a slight breeze. Quite enjoyable. A nice variety of people starting coming out as the morning light did. Almost always enjoy my South Mountain hikes. :y:

Got up bright and early and hit the trail at 8:35am to avoid the heat. The going over was easy. The coming back was a pumpkin that rimes with itch.

Whew you would have to be out of your mind to attempt this in the summer months. Dear god it was a cooker out there. I finished about 2:10pm.

My breaks were several short ones on the return to keep from overheating. Afterwards it was double a slurpee day for JJ! :y: All better now. :D

Alright it's official I'm a knucklehead! This hike was on my list of hikes I have not done at South Mountain.Wrong day to do it!Was it Bruce that said I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed? Well I got a helicopter ride today.I always thought this would never happen to me but it did.I think I had plenty of liquid but the heat did me in.I hope I learned my lesson and I will take all advice and ribbing too!I did fine going out at 5:05am.I made it to Goat Hill in 3 hours. On the way back I did fine until maybe a little after Buena Vista then the little! uphills starting feeling harder then they should. Then I starting feeling sick.I pushed on a little more and was wearing down fast. From there it was time to swallow my pride and admit I did a dumb thing.I had phone service(Godsend) in this little spot.I decided to call for a ride and turn off and go down Mormon Trail.Well it turned out to be to late for that and I had to swallow some more pride.I needed help.Grace made the call for help.I found shade and kept drinking.I threw that water up.A NICE LADY(Godsend)showed up.I drank a little water and put a little on my head. Then I remembered Dave saying he learned in the life saving class to cool down groin and armpits first. The lady's frozen powerade did the trick. The rescue guys got there and I got a bag of liquids and something so I wouldn't throw up.My vitals were ok but they said the copter ride was still the way to go.The cabled me up at took me to the Central parking lot. They checked me again and let Grace take me home were I promtly got grounded.A big thanks to the Nice Lady,Grace,Donna,Rescue team, pilot,Dave and anyone I missed.I apologize for being a knucklehead and for not represented HAZ in a flattering way! ](*,) :sorrry:

Wanted something with mileage but close to home. This hike fit the bill. Got there a little before 6:30. Just prior to starting the National TH two coyotes starting talking to each other. I couldn't see them, but I was between them. :) They yipped for a good minute. Great view from top of first rise of National. It was still fairly dark so city lights were still on and parts of the city was layered in fog. I was about 5 miles in before I felt the first rays of sunlight and it was much appreciated. Made decent time to Goat Hill...little over three hours. I had never hiked parts of the National going west to east. I did not realize how much uphill there was between Telegraph Trail and Buena Vista Lookout. Trails were busy around Telegraph Pass and as they day wore on. Saw quite a few mountain bikers and trail runners. (Some event coming up for runners)? One guy must have been in his 50's and he was making good time heading west on the National.

Did not do Hidden Valley or Pima Wash on this hike. Stayed on the entry service road and National for the duration of hike.

I've been waiting for a cool day to do an in and out on the National from the Pima Canyon trailhead. Today was overcast for all but a couple hours, which was perfect. Stopped by Goat Hill on the way west, a must for me. Once I reached the west end of the National, I hiked up the Alta trail to Maricopa Peak and then came back the same way. Excellent hike. The National is really a nice trail except for the last couple miles on the west end. Not too many people out and about considering it is a holiday.
