We pulled together a plan late on Friday evening, with a fantastic weather forecast for Saturday. I'd had Tortilla on my list for a few years and threw that out as an option...exactly the smooth, on-trail hike chumley was looking for :). After overnight rain, some of the low peaks were still in clouds on the drive and early in the hike. No other vehicles in the parking lot, and it was in the low 50s as we started up FR 213.

We had a few route options loaded and decided on the loop, leaving the road after less than 1.5 miles to start the climb. We loosely followed the 2017 @jacobemerick route up a ridge, past some alcoves, then down into a drainage with quite a few bedrock pools. From there, we checked out a concrete dam, then resumed the climb up to the ridgeline that would take us south to the peak, and the views of the western Supes opened up nicely.

We opted to go up and over the top of the rock outcroppings on the ridgeline to avoid side-hilling through brush. That worked out well, though we did hit one spot that started to get sketchy, but a short backtrack revealed a chute with a much easier bypass. We detoured over to a window in the rock outcropping a little north of the summit--cool geology and formations in that area, then over to the summit with a straightforward scramble up the NE side.

We had cloud cover and cool temps on top, and the 360° views from the peak were fantastic. Many, many Superstition, Mazzy, Goldfield, and other distant landmarks visible. We took a long break up there and enjoyed our first food/water of the hike, then signed the register before starting down.

[ youtube video ]

We dropped down the south side of the summit block, which was mostly vertical and included some unfortunately placed catclaw and various pokey things to keep it extra interesting, but it worked out. We considered a few route options and decided to descend the drainage on the official route. Very steep and loose toward the top, but it was manageable, and distance-wise, it wasn't too long before we were back on Peter's Trail, which had been recently cleared.

Rather than walking 213 back to the parking lot, we hiked up to Fish Mesa and enjoyed the incredible views overlooking the creek. Past the benchmark, we took a relaxing break in the shade of the lone juniper before following the mesa edge north. By that time, the clouds had finally cleared off Four Peaks. Looping back to the road required crossing two drainages--one smaller, then down into a deeper creek bed, navigating a series of layered-rock levels. On the far side, we picked up a ridiculously over-cairned trail that connected to the road to finish it off.

Fun day all around--comfortable temps that stayed under 70° all day, nice clouds, great peak with scenic views, no new holes in the shorts, more flowers than I've seen on any other hike this year, plus we found some small ruins. Absolute gem of an April day, and I'm glad I suggested Tortilla and it worked out--the day exceeded high expectations.

I had never even looked at this one, apparently part of my unintentional superstitious blind spot. It had been on John's list and upon discussing the phenomenal late-April weather, we decided to make this one the goal on what is nearly certain to be the last tolerable Stits hike of the season.

We opted to do the reverse of what we continually referred to as the @jacobemerick route. We deviated from his route a bit, probably because the view looking up presented some different looking options than he had on the descent. Regardless, this was a really enjoyable route to the summit with minimal obstacles, only a couple of moderately steep climbs, and easily avoided catclaw.

It was about 2.5 miles and 1500 feet from our crossing of Tortilla Creek until reaching the northern reaches of the Tortilla Mountain ridgeline. From there it was another mile and 500 feet more to reach the distinct summit, with a couple of added highlights along the way.

After not stopping for so much as a sip of water on the 3 hour ascent, we spent a solid break enjoying the views at the top, which extended from the Galiuros to the Catalinas, White Tanks, Bradshaws, Pine Mountain, the Mazzies from Lion to Sheep, Ord and Browns, and the Ancha — the latter four caked in spring snow. Poofy clouds lingered from yesterday's storm and enhanced the views and photos.

After adding our names to the summit register, we opted to descend via the official route as posted on HAZ, which is a pretty miserable option. It would certainly be a better climb than descent, but the Emerick route was so much more pleasant, I'm not sure I would ever do this route again! The only benefit was that you do eventually reach the maintained Peter's Trail, so it's only 1.5 miles of off-trail. But the 1500 feet of elevation is highly concentrated on the upper half of the mileage and is replete with loose scree, prickly flora, and no particularly intuitive or pleasant-looking route. Doable? Sure. Enjoyable? Not so much.

Once on Peter's we made quick time out to the trailhead where we opted for the scenic return along the cliffs above Fish Creek Canyon. (I refuse to accept that a mountain or mesa can be named "fish" lol). This stretch is a favorite alternative to walking the 213 and with the perfect weather, did not disappoint.

Temps hovered in the low 60s most of the day, topping out at 67 as we finished up and the afternoon sun made a more steady appearance. Often enough the clouds and cool breeze resulted in being borderline chilly. Not a bad thing for this time of year!

This turned out to be a really enjoyable loop. Lots of variety, perfect weather, and top notch views. The official route? Yeah, find a different way! Lol.

It was necessary to modify a route up to Tortilla Mountain because I didn't account for most of the creeks in the area essentially being rivers. Which was fine because sometimes exploring off the beaten path leads to interesting discoveries. TM most definitely is a nice Supes summit, considering it's the highest point for miles around with great views, especially snowy Four Peaks. I descended a more inspiring route (I think jacobemerick's Jan.'17 track) than the official route and then integrated the crappy Rippin' and the Tearin' Horse Basin crossover and some of Fish Mesa into a CCW loop. Unfortunately, I forgot to run-up Hoolie Bacon to Peak 4143. I'll admit that HB is somewhat growing on me, since for once its banality was muted by the sound of rapids. Water reports seem superfluous currently because moisture is seeping from every crevice, side drainage and flowing down the muddy trails. And there's another storm forecasted, so it should be a good wildflower season again.

We arrived at Tortilla TH a little after 7AM, and a vehicle with a HAZ decal pulled up right after us. When the driver got out, I recognized hikerdw from pictures on HAZ, so I got out and introduced myself, and we talked for a minute before he and his son headed out for their hike.

We planned to hike the Tortilla-Fish Mesa loop counterclockwise, with some added detours to a few other points of interest nearby. It was in the low/mid-40s when we started up FR 213, which had quite a few puddles and some mud from the recent rain. Our first detour was a stop to get a closer look at a possible dwelling wall I noticed on a hike to Music Mountain two years ago [ photo ] .

It was easy getting over there, and I found three small walls in a short alcove, plus a few shallow grinding holes. It must've been used as a granary or storage area, because the ceilings were very low. It was interesting to see that the natives used a big rock slab to form major sections of at least one of the walls and then added smaller rocks and mortar to fill it out--I haven't seen those construction "shortcuts" at many sites.

[ youtube video ]

The next stop was another ruins site up on a cliff wall that required a little more effort to reach but wasn't bad aside from some brush and catclaw. Once I located it, I left all my stuff with TBoneKathy and worked my way over there, though I wished I'd brought the clippers to deal with the catclaw. This site was a larger walled-off cave, with one wall in decent shape and another deteriorated down to the point that it looked more like a column of rock. Up above the cave, there were a few more small walls built on a narrow ledge, probably granaries or storage structures.

[ youtube video ]

There were a few vehicles and tents set up when we reached JF Trailhead, and we continued on to the gravesites of George Miller and then Ernest Martin. I dropped down into the drainage below and briefly looked for the Miller Tunnel Number One Spring but didn't see it, so I headed back up and we backtracked on JF Trail to get back on the route to Fish Mesa. We had to do some light scrambling to get up to the high point at the 3785 benchmark and took a lunch break there. As others have mentioned, the elevation on the benchmark seems too high based on the GPS reading.

[ youtube video ]
[ youtube video ]

The summit cairn was dismantled and scattered around. I'd read there's no longer a register up there, so I brought a jar and placed a new one and rebuilt the cairn. The top of Four Peaks was in the clouds, and the views overlooking Fish Creek Canyon were fantastic. It was easy hiking along the ridgeline, but we encountered more catclaw and a little rougher terrain dropping down into a drainage and coming up the other side before reconnecting with FR 213.

We had some extra time, so we went back to the first ruins site so TboneKathy could get a closer look since she didn't see it up close in the morning. We finally saw two other hikers on the road as we finished off the hike, and there were eight other vehicles at Tortilla TH when we finished, with more people setting up to watch the sunset along SR 88 on the drive out. It was a good day--we had comfortable weather, nice clouds, and great scenery throughout. It was fun to do some exploring and visit two ruins sites and the grave markers we hadn't seen before, and it was nice meeting @hikerdw in the morning :).

Dave and I work the Superstition Wilderness trailheads on Fridays, he at First Water, me at Peralta. Dave recruited me into the fold about 13 months ago. We go out together from time to time to survey trails and water sources. Today we wanted to have some fun. I recommended this hike, using a track created by @hikerdw from Nov-2015 (not exactly, but close enough).

We hiked up FS #213 but missed the turn because we were talking too much. We back tracked a quarter mile where we then picked up the off trail portion of the hike. The early part of the route is easy enough to follow and cairns are placed where you need them. We both agreed that the hardest part of the hike was where you cross the creek about 1.6 miles in and ascend the mesa that divides Tortilla and Fish canyons. The fairly steep ascent has a fair amount of catclaw that you have to wiggle through as you climb to the top of the mesa. It's easy walking from there until you reach the high ground where excellent views of Fish Creek abound.

We continued south following DW's track. I was looking for a register I saw in his photo set. I thought it might have been on a bluff to the west, but I must have had the coordinates wrong; I could not locate it. Not a big deal, but it provides a good enough reason to do some research and go back in the spring when it will be a little wetter and greener.

After hiking down from the bluff, then up and over the next hill, we couldn't agree on the next course of action to get us to the JF trail. Dave saw some game trails along the side of the next hill and wanted to go that way (SE). I wanted to stay on the track, which headed SW. We ended up going in different directions, which was not good, so I ended up heading over to where he was. It was six of one or half a dozen of the other. We ended up where we needed to be and were back on track soon after.

We dropped down into the ravine below that final hill and followed the fence until we picked up JF trail. We followed JF down to the road, then down towards Peters trail where we stopped at Tortilla Creek for lunch. We found some nice boulders in the creek and enjoyed a nice long break, half of which was spent plucking stuff out of our shoes and socks.

The rest was an easy road walk back to the trailhead. Splendid day under mostly sunny skies with a high in the mid-60's. Very fun hike.

In efforts to make a loop hike for our hiking club, we walked up the Tortilla Ranch road about one mile. We had seen a map with an old trail going to Fish Creek Canyon Overlook. We built a cairn where we left the trail and worked our way to the overlook. Once there, we made our way toward the Tortilla Ranch. As we dropped down to the ranch, we decided to make our way up to the shelters built of caliche and rocks, closing the shelters. A fun hike for us, but we decided the route we took would not be a good hike for our hiking group at Venture Out.

Nice day, once we got there, plenty of delays on the Apache Trail due to construction. No one else around.

Tortilla-Fish Mesa offers exceptional views. I'll link it in the spirit of The Eagle and 9L... however we only covered a quarter mile of the access. The jellybean and I tackled this monster six years ago. What I recall was a never ending obstacle course and flat out amazement she hiked with me again.

When I greeted Bruce this morning a deep raspy Jabba the Hut replied hello. Off trail and head/chest colds do not mix but I admired his determination!

From the Fish Creek bridge the hike up SR88 is easier than anticipated. We headed off trail...

This was Bruce's pick and I'd hiked it before so all was good. Not. Had I simply read my previous triplogs and looked at the map this may have gone better. Bruce's cold didn't put him into the groove for this adventure and our pace was not working so we aborted to FR213 to bypass the ridge. Which we hoped would net enough time to add in Owen's boy scout cave.

FR213 is a highway so we had time to hit the alcove/cave. Bruce was amazed a seventy year old dragged jlp and I to the cave. I was amazed that while our hike worked with gps and cairns how easily Owen knew the route. If you miss a cairn it gets ugly quick.

Fish Creek sprinkled in Autumn foliage is a treat. Our route became much easier than anticipated too. In 2009 Janelle and I dodged and skirted miles of water whereas today the entire upper end was dry.

Only three small groups of hikers in the half mile near the bridge. Absolutely perfect temps throughout the day.

I'd always wanted to hit up the Fish Creek area. We though we might be a little early for some color, but the Temps were gonna be perfect.

We were the first to park at the Fish Creek Bridge area and headed up the Apache Trail towards our turn off, across from the Comfort Station. We hit up the Fliver mark and made our way across Ridge. We had things we wanted to get to and travel across the top was slower than anticipated, so after 2.5 miles of travel we hit up FR213 to make up some time..

Next past the old ranch area, we found our way to the old cairned route of Fish Creek via Lost Dutch. This trail is still there, but easy to loose if you don't pay attention. Down in Fish Creek, the first goal here was to find the Fish Creek Cave. [ photo ] Without knowing it's location, you'll walk right past it.

We had some lunch outside the cave and started the trip back down Fish Creek.

Smaller rocks turn into bigger rocks turn into boulders, turn into houses. You pick up more and more pools of water and the the superstitions turn into a jungle in spots. I kept getting mad at the scenery as I'd already taken way too many photos.

The last 1.5 miles is the slowest and demands you have to pick the correct route up, over, under, through boulder mazes. Joe called it a Ninja training ground and that pretty much sums this portion up.

What a special area and fun time.

Was looking for something different from the Tortilla area and decided to give this posted hike a try. Great hike. Other than loose cobble sized rocks that made footing a little slippery in areas the off trail wasn't bad at all and we were able to dodge any thick sections of catclaw, number of falls, Ryan 1, me two, but one was actually on FR213 so we aren't counting that one

Due to the time of day most of the pictures looking into Fish Canyon were washed out by the sun but they were top notch views first hand :D Lots of bunnies call this mesa home as they were darting out everywhere, I actually almost stepped on one. Saw 2 white-tail deer on the decent off the mesa. Noticed the Wilderness sign off JF Trail was missing. Had lunch off the start of Peter's Trail next to a dry Tortilla creek.

This is one of my favorite superstition hikes. Throw in monsoon drama, pockets of wildflowers, and a 80 degree September day...well I'll surely have my cake and eat it. The Jeep road is usually an obstacle, but this day it was lined with budding flowers and puddles. About .5 miles was an incredible section of purple morning glory flowers pretending it was March. They were speckled with water from the days rain still. I watched a dramatic sunset light up Fish Creek Canyon with Four Peaks off in the distance also collecting an intense glow. Wow an amazing moment :D! The hike back was somewhat lonely and dark, but well worth it to see that sunset.

Wanted some easy adventure and this is my go to area. Had a full day of work friday so I knew this was going to be a night hike. Talked my friend Ray to go on his first overnighter and it would help relieve the spookiness of the Supes at night :scared: Got to the trail head at 7:00pm and I decided to try and muscle up the worst road in AZ. NO AVAIL! If you dont have a 4x4 bad pumpkin kicking rig, walk from the parking lot! The moon was no where to be seen, and the stars, though bright, weren't enough to help. So by headlamp we meandered to the old trail-head/wilderness boundary. Being Ray's first real adventure, a few "what was that sound" checks were needed. Glowing eyes were in them hills! So I kept the schnauzer close, told Ray to man up  and got us to a camp I have used before. We had a few kind bars, Odell IPA, and awesome conversation.

We awoke at 6 and Ray got his first glimpse of the dubbed "HOLY TREE" A lone juniper on Fish Mesa. I have this odd obsession the tree and needed to spend time with it :D . So we booked it off trail through the nastiest desert terrain you can find. The distance is a bit deceiving , so Ray decided to sit on a high ridge and watch me go insane through the dawn up the next slope. 6:45 (10 minutes till sunrise) I admitted defeat, and realized I wasn't going to make the tree in time for sunrise. The tree won. I booked it to a great Fish Creek overlook and enjoyed the amazing desert sunrise.

On the way out Raymond discovered why good hiking shoes are important. I felt so bad watching him waddle and wince in pain for 3.5 miles. To his credit he is one tuf SOB and didn't complain!
I'll see you soon Holy tree, very soon ;) .

I just took the Tortilla trailhead out to Peter's trail and back. I've driven by the trail head a million times, and I decided to check it out today. I also needed to take another roll of film for class (doing my final project on the Supes). I really didn't take very many shot with my normal camera, and these were the ones. I thought there was going to be a better sunset (storm clouds ruined it), but i'll take a moonrise too (the last photo).

Not quite what was expected, but the water made it enjoyable. Nearly lost Suz in Fish Creek a couple of times, be safe out there!

Afterwards was dinner in the classiest place I've eaten yet in AJ, where used men's briefs adorn the ceiling. :yuck:

Steve, Susan, and I set out to explore a 'new' canyon all loaded up with 4 ropes, all our canyoneering gear, wetsuits, canyoneering boots and loads of webbing. Unfortunately we didn't need find any significant drops to rappel, but we did find some very thick bushwhacking in the upper reaches and in the lower section there was loads of small falls to bypass or downclimb & a few sections of sweet slides. :D This canyon wouldn't be near as much 'fun' when dry though... Once at Fish River :o , uhhh I mean creek, we donned our wetsuits, neoprene socks & gloves, and helmets and very slowly & carefully hopped/waded/swam our way downstream to Fish Creek Bridge. Near the bridge, we avoided the craziest section of the creek by finding one of the bypass trails. I added an extra 2 miles and 1000ft of elevation since I volunteered to power walk  up Fish Creek hill to get Susan's SUV up at Tortilla TH and drive it back to pick up my freezing friends. I'm always up for a challenging canyon and I had a good time, but I don't think I'll be hitting that canyon ever again.

Headed out with Hikergirl81 for a loop through Fish Creek Canyon. We started at the bridge and hiked the road up. Then it was off trail to the ridge separating Fish Creek and Tortilla Creek(further away). Then returned via the creek.

Having completed a portion of the ridge years ago I blew off researching the entire ridge. This proved to be a big mistake on my part. Ravine after ravine presented itself resulting in an unplanned rollercoaster. On towards Lost Dutch Canyon we encountered catclaw. This was followed by more catclaw and a vegetation choked canyon. We were in the sun longer than anticipated. At this point I was surprised Hikergirl81 didn't beat me to a pulp for leading her through the catclaw mess in a virtual easy bake oven.

Into Fish Creek we found it was running. Albeit a nice setting this meant slow going. I could have sworn somebody said Fish Creek was stagnant three weeks ago. Not only was that not the case but there was even water going over the road at Tortilla Flats!

We took our time heading down canyon and enjoying the sections in the shade. As evening approached we were fortunate enough to have a nice bright moon.

I'm glad to have experienced it once. Hikergirl81 is a natural born explorer!
