Hiked from Peralta TH to First Water TH by way of Cave Trail with a stop at the Pinon Pine tree at the end of the point overlooking Weaver's Needle. Cave Trail is way more fun when you hike it in this direction, climbing up the Devil's Slide. Plus you avoid all the traffic and noise on the Peralta Trail. We saw only 3 hikers on Cave Trail heading down to Peralta TH. We avoided Fremont Saddle and ran into a few hikers on the way to First Water TH. I slipped on the way up Cave Trail and busted my right knee up pretty badly. Then I hiked 10 more miles to First Water TH. My knee's about 3 times it's normal size today.

Took the Dutchman Trail from the Peralta TH on a hot, humid day. Humidity was a little too much for me and I turned back in sight of Miner's Needle.

If you don't know where Aylor's Arch is (like me), it is easy to miss it. The arch was covered in brush and we hiked right past it only discovered it by chance on the way back. The coolest part of this hike was a deep pond with about about 6 frogs sunning themselves on the algae. Who would have thought we'd find that 5 miles into the Supes?

A group of 4 us climbed to the top. Excellent day for a hike up one of my favorite peaks.

I've always wanted to hike FW > Canyon Lake and finally got the chance to do so. We did this backwards, first leaving a truck at First Water TH and then driving to Canyon Lake. The Boulder Canyon trail in this direction is a chore, a slow steady climb up to the nameless hill that overlooks the lake. The ocotillo blooming at the top of the hill made the climb worthwhile (check out the pix).

We saw very few people on the trail today. We ran into a couple of lost hikers while we were climbing up the hill on Second Water Trail after the junction with Boulder Canyon Trail. They had hiked the Black Mesa loop counterclockwise and turned right at the Black Mesa / Second Water trail junction instead of left. They were headed into Boulder Canyon thinking the First Water TH parking lot was that direction. We gave them our extra water and hiked them back out to First Water TH.

Today was a perfect day to climb Flatiron. Lots of people were out as you can see from the pics, but few made it past the basin. Before we headed back down, we decided to explore a little bit of the Superstition Ridgeline Trail where we got a view of Flatiron few probably see.

Today was the perfect day to climb Picacho Peak. The trail was the most crowded I've ever seen, but most were only climbing to the Saddle. I saw my second rattlesnake this year, about 100 feet below the saddle between two rocks. We climbed to the top of Picacho and took a side trip to the top of the lower peak to the northwest.

Nice, short, easy hike to take the kids. The kids liked the hieroglyphics. It's too bad that some of the hieroglyphics were destroyed by some morons who had to add their own.

We tried climbing The Three Sisters but fell short by about a mile. This hike is a great workout if you want to gain elevation quickly and don't mind the pain in your knees the next day. :D

Carney Springs Road is very rough and I wouldn't recommend bringing a car unless you want to loose your oil pan. You need a high clearance vehicle to negotiate all the rocks strewn all over the road.

The first 1 1/4 miles to West Boulder Saddle gains about 900 feet in elevation over loose rock and dirt. This was a workout for my lungs on the way up and my knees on the way down. West Boulder Saddle give you a great view looking back towards Carney Springs Road and FS 77.

From West Boulder Saddle I felt like turning back when I saw the next climb. It looks very imposing from the Saddle, but I found the climb easier than the first 1 1/4 miles. You gain another 600 feet in elevation that mostly comes near the top. Once at the top, it's an easy walk along the Ridgeline Trail.

We bushwhacked our way to what we thought was the top of Three Sisters only to find ourselves on the smaller set of peaks next to Three Sisters. It was getting late, so we heading back down.

If you are looking for great views, I wouldn't recommend this climb over a Flatiron or Picacho climb. If you are looking for a workout without a crowd (we saw only 2 other hikers), this is a decent climb.

I finally got the opportunity to try the Cave Trail as a return from a hike up the Peralta Trail to Fremont Saddle. After a quick break at Fremont Saddle for some great pix of Weaver's Needle, we took a side trip up East Boulder Canyon to the site of Marie Celeste Jones' Pinon Camp where we ate lunch under the Needle. Next, we headed back towards Fremont Saddle and detoured to the lone pine tree at the end of the point for yet another great view of Weaver's Needle and some more pix. Then finally, on to Cave Trail.... :D

Though not an officially maintained trail, Cave Trail was well-cairned and easy to follow. The Devil's Slide was somewhat of a disappointment; it was no harder than the descent directly above the basin on Siphon Draw. We met only two other hikers on Cave Trail. On Peralta, a cast of thousands was heading up to the saddle including numerous groups of screaming teenagers and twenty-somethings. Cave Trail offered not only great views of Peralta Canyon, but peace and quiet not found on Peralta. I hope the noisy twenty-somethings never discover Cave Trail! :D

I took my dog for a short hike from Buena Vista to Fat Man's Pass. Everytime I hike South Mountain, I end up asking myself, "Why?" :?: The traffic on Baseline was gridlock. :( Snowbirds in the car in front of me drove so slowly up the mountain that I was actually passed by a dude on a bike! :x The brown cloud wiped away any views. I should have just gone to the Supes.
