Decided it was time to break in the kids for some hiking. What better time to start than a new year? Took them somewhere local, where i could get in for free (sneak up a wash by some homes), where I have been plenty times, and knew it would be easy trekking for them. A nice day for a hike. Weather was perfect.

Wanted to get out there in the forest to gather fruits, but came up short..Not enough rain for this time of year but thought i would still give it a shot. What a beautiful place this is though. Nice place to take the family camping during the summer to escape the heat, was only around 82 degrees while up there. Wandered up the trail near a campground on FR 616. This supposedly keeps going to run into FR 142 but didnt go all the way. Turned around in what seemed about 2.5 miles in.

What a beautiful hike this was! Beautiful weather, was around 70 most of the way until reaching close to the summit, there it felt more like in the 40's :o Since I took the aerial sky tram from palm springs up to San Jacinto state park mountain station that added a very welcome addition to the experience of the hike. It was like flying up the mountain in a heli ride! Very fun, and unique. The sky tram also rotates around 360 degrees so you dont miss any views going up. You go up quickly gaining about 7000 feet in elevation in what felt like around a 7 minute ride it was you quickly feel the change in temperature started from the desert floor in the 100's to alpine forest in the 70's. I will have to post this hike up. I am very comfortable in saying that this is thee best hike in Ca thats closest to Phoenix. Its only a 4 hour drive over there (going the speed limits). This hike reminded me of Humphreys at times, but slightly less crowded than the time I went, also the grade of the climb isnt as steep and gradually gains elevation. But beautiful views all around, and never had a dull moment there. Fresh sping water flows abundant, and even have one tapped with a pipe for convienance. Awesome!

I was blessed with the opportunity to head back to my beloved superstitions. Before deciding on doing this loop I was thinking about headed back up to battleship once again, but thought I had too late a start as I arrived at First Water at about 9:15. Since I hadnt hiked any further south on boulder canyon I decided to take it to meet up with dutchmans and take that back to the TH. Its getting hot out there, not too bad yet, but didnt think I would need more than 3 litres. I ran out just before reaching the dutchmans, but I made it out fine. Nothing close to the first trip to supe peak in the summer of 06!

Beautiful day for a hike. Decided to head up for the second time, but this time for a winter hike. Cool clean and with clear skies, but still that ever present modern day blanket of filth hangs over all the corruption below. Some snow left over from the christmas rains on all the north faces from the saddle up to the peak. Ice was in several places making it very slippery on rocks. Trodding carefully I never fell luckily. Nicely cairned as I remember it made it easy, in the sense of pathfinding, but still difficult on the physical scale. Haven't been hiking as much lately, and I could feel the burns from the quick elevation gain. Love that view from up there. Good meditation up on that peak. Saw the burning bush, and had I conversation with the most high.

Beautiful area this was! Would have been more nice if I was more prepared for snow and rain. It got down to 40 degrees up there. Maybe it was the first snow seen this coming winter? I took the little shortcut trail at the begining from the parking lot, at the tip of the parking lot turnaround. Glad I did, was alot less crowded and more like a trail and not a road. Alot of people still hiking here for that extreme of weather. Very windy and it was like a blizzard up on that Basin, didnt have time to enjoy it, just turned around and head down as fast as I could for the heater in the car.

Having not been able to get out on hikes lately for various reasons, this hike was quite strenuous. The heat, and more than that the humidity that day was making me sweat like never before. Other than that though was a beautiful hike. Lots of plant life out there, lack of wildlife however in this middle of nowhere. Only ran into a couple other visitors early on so I had it to myself. It was nice getting out of the concrete into a natural setting I had been longing for. Steep steady climb on what seemed like an ancient big horn trail, Actually on the way down in areas I could see the wear down on the bedrock of thousands of years of hooves climbing up and down this. Summit offered an ok view, not quite a 360 view like Humphrey, but still a great point to be at. Overall it was great to get back out on a trail!

Well I finally made this hike. Alot more strenuous than I thought it would be. The hike down was a breeze and the ruins were awesome. Sitting next to the ruins I imagined how long that those were sitting there. They were there before Europe even discovered America. They sat there through all the years of slavery. It was there before the first street, before the first light bulb, before the first car and it was still standing there in this time... It had a WOW effect on me I guess. Nice cool place to rest and take a break. I then headed back down to head to angel basin just to check it out. It was a nice flat area to camp, but nothing of real interest. Turned around and headed back up and out the canyon. It wasnt to hard but it had a steady incline, which at parts would get me needing to stop and take a breather. Overall a great hike, well worth the drive and the time.

I decided to do one final hike in the white tanks, as i pretty much had hiked all they had to offer. Got started on a sunday morning around 8:15. Passed a few parties the first hour or about the first couple miles then nobody til the end of the hike on the way returning. I was intending to hike to the Ford canyon trail junction and turn around to make a 12 mile hike, But as it was getting hot and only carrying 3 litres of water with me I stopped at the 5 mile post marker. Nothing too exciting along the trail. It was quite a bit cooler up in the higher elevations though, a good steady breeze was nice until getting back down in the canyon.

Returned to the white tanks to do its premeire hike the ford canyon loop. I got started at the TH at mesquite canyon and did the loop clockwise. Heading to the end of mequite trail at ford canyon junction also goat camp junctions here. Not too much to see along the way but it was nice place to take a little break. Then descended down the ford trail which along the way I noticed they have been doing some work on at it switchbacks down into a little valley. Seen alot of mule deer along this secion. There was a group of about 8 to 9 of them that took off running up to a ridge as I aprroached. Pretty cool to see that. Then came hiking in the soft sand of the creek bed which im not really thrilled about but didnt take too long to get through it before reaching the slabs of granite. The pools of water that were left were really infested with insects. They had been stagnant for some time. The little dam was nothing spectacular, just went on past that. Then the trail really starts to steepen as it heads down into the canyon and it gives a really good view. I went off to the side of the trail where there were big boulders just sticking out above the canyon, sat there and ate enjoyed the breeze which was coming in through the canyon, played a tune on my native flute, really nice meditative spot. Then heading back down to the juction with Waddel and strolled the last mile back to the parking lot. Best Hike the White tanks has to offer in my opinion.

Didnt have much time for Hike So thought I would just wander off trail from the second water trail in the Garden valley. Ended up taking a trail heading north before reaching the juction with Black mesa trail in Garden Valley where a just a wood post was sticking up. It seemed to follow along side of first water stream, and then ended up at the old ranch. Which I went farther to the spring and headed up to the top of the small mountain just west of the ranch. Nice to be out there in the supes again!

Went on a whim to my first visit to the white tanks. Lots of petroglyphs along the trail. The end at the waterfall was nothing spectacular, just a stagnant pool of water. But the hike itself and spotting petroglyphs along the way was fun.

This was a nice hike not too far from Phoenix. Nice and shady trail as it follows along the creek. Didnt come across anybody else the whole day. Nice scenery even though alot of the landscape has obviously been on fire at sometime not too long ago. Trail seemed a little longer than expected. Nice and easy trail hiking up to the juction to the Quein sabe trail. Then its an old rocky road all the way back down, not too fun from there but nothing nobody couldnt handle. Overall it was another blessed day. Ran into my first crested Saguaro!

Great day for a hike. Sunny, few scattered clouds. Started From First water around 9am. Quickly got to Black mesa trail in Garden valley and headed up to the top of black mesa. What a great view of the needle from there. Also would be a great place to camp overnight. I had never seen so much cholla, it would be impossible to get off trail up there. Headed down to the juction of lost Dutchman and took that east to Bull pass trail to attempt to reach black top mesa, but running short on time I only made it half way up it until I turned around and took the dutchmans trail back to Firstwater. It was a great loop, with awesome views of the needle.

Well its a few months later that im writing the log for this from the day I hiked it. But never the less I still have a good memory of this hike. After finding the road was closed up to cave creek trail from seven springs, and then after visiting sears-kay ruins I still needed my fix of hiking. So I headed back down cave creek road to spur cross ranch. I did the same loop as in the description but hiked it counter clockwise. The hike is not too strenous but there were some areas were the trail was faint, and this trail was not cairned at these points. Just keep the good eye out for it. A very pleasant hike this was.

WAS HEADED TO SEVEN SPRINGS TH IN THE CAVE CREEK PARK FOR A CAVE CREEK LOOP BUT WAS ONLY TO FIND THAT THE ROAD PASS THE SEARS KAY RUIN WAS CLOSED UNTIL SUNDAY THE 1/28/07. DECIDED TO CHECK OUT THE RUINS AS I HAVE NEVER HEARD ABOUT THEM. WHAT A NICE SUPRISE. I REALLY ENJOYED THE RUINS. COULDNT REALLY CALL IT A HIKE THOUGH. ALOT OF RUINS TO EXPLORE, AND IT WAS NICE TO SEE WEAVERS NEEDLE IN THE DISTANCE. GREAT VIEW ON THE HILLTOP. HEADED BACK DOWN AND STILL FELT LIKE I NEEDED TO DO A "HIKE". ENDED UP GOING TO THE SPUR CROSS RANCH CONSERVATION PARK NEARBY, AND DID A NICE 6 MILE LOOP THERE.

Nice weather on a Saturday up the hunter trail to the peak. Got started around from the trailhead at 8am, that seemed pretty late to be the first one there, yet there were a couple of hikers behind me the whole way. It was fun, a little different due to the improvements, and had this hike had no steel cables there would be a few places where there would be some great exposure. Not too long to complete the hike, but had a nice view from at top. I met a couple at top on holiday from england, they said they visit arizona every couple of years just for the hiking. It was their fourth visit to the top of picacho. I let them know about battleship mountain in the supes and recommended it for a change. I wonder if they made it? Anyway this was a fun hike.

This turned out to be a great hike. Havent been able to get out on the trails lately, so it was very nice getting everything in tune with hiking again... My whole attitude has changed since then. The temperature is nice at this time in the winter. I couldnt imagine doing it in the heat of summer. Nice steady incline, not too far in distance but not too short either. The view from the top would have been alot nicer had there not been as much smog. Couldnt see much passed south mountian. Couldnt even see downtown. Big solid quartz boulders at top is interesting to see. Great hike!

Took this hike with my Dad who came down to visit from CA. Alot of History in this area. For a National Historic site there were no crowds. Only one other car when we got there around noon. And one car in the parking lot when we left around 3:30. The hike itself isnt that long, most of the time is spent reading the signs and learning about the history and exploring the ruins. I really enjoyed this place...It was like going back in time.
