We started out this Saturday with plans on joining in for the search for Joe, but after soul searching we figured that we would only be it the way with everyone that was heading in that direction. :( We decided to do a short loop from Crosscut TH to Massacre falls by way of Praying Hands. The trail is very good until you start bushwhacking to Massacre Falls; there are only a few cairns that we could find after you make the turn east toward the falls. We lost the trail and proceeded to follow the ridge line for the last mile to the falls, thankfully there is very little cactus or catclaw in this area. We reached the ridge in front of the falls and stopped for a break. We did not go the last few hundred yards to the falls because there was no water flowing at this time of year. We proceeded back to the old Massacre Falls TH and at the fence line there is a well-marked new trail that leads back to the Crosscut TH.

This was the perfect day to start out the fall hiking season. We had planned on doing this trail last winter but the opportunity never happened, so it seemed right to start off with the Ballantine Trail. We began the uphill trail at 6:30 with a temperature of 48 degrees. There was no sense of urgency as this was the first hike of the season for us. The plan was to be done about 1:30pm. We made good time to the cabin after stopping several times to enjoy the view and catch our breath. After having a 30 min lunch at the cabin the trip resumed and for the next 2 miles we had to bushwhack our way through some very thick and overgrown catclaw, cactus and every other thing that will stick, prick or cut you. It looked like we went through a meat grinder after we made it to the top of the ridge. The trail was practically nonexistent and extremely over grown. I would not recommend doing it if you do not have a GPS and good route finding skills, and a few pints of extra blood with you. We lost the trail (if you can even call it a trail) many times in the 2 miles and 2 hour adventure. We made it back to the trail head exhausted and bloody at about 3:30pm. Overall it was a hike to remember, we only saw 3 other hikers all day on the Pine Creek Loop North as we were heading out.

We decided to get out of the valley heat for a few days and hike someplace that wasn't closed because of forest fires and also cool. I had been up to the White Mountains hunting and fishing many times over the past 30 years but had never done much hiking in the area. I have always considered the White Mountain and Alpine area incredibly beautiful.
Mt. Baldy, as the highest summit in the White Mountain of eastern Arizona, appeared to be a good choice. We were not to be disappointed. The Mt. Baldy Wilderness Loop was an amazing and incredible hike through some of the most pristine forest, open meadows, and trout streams as just some of its natural treasures!
We started at the East Baldy Trail #95 which has a brand new blacktop parking lot and can be accessed by any vehicle at this time of year. As you pass along the gate to the trail head the Crossover Trail will be to your right (west). The trail is 3 1/4 miles to Sheep's Crossing and rolls up and over several small "round-tops" and then drops you down into several beautiful meadows to join the West Baldy Trail #96.
We were not in any hurry and planned on spending the night on the plateau and finish up the next day coming down the East Baldy Trail.
The East Baldy Trail #95 is in my opinion, the more scenic of the two trails and offers fantastic panoramic views. You can gaze for over a hundred miles to the northwest toward Flagstaff and Mt. Humphrey s, the Painted Desert to the north and even Escondido Mountain to the northeast. From the Reservation Boundary Pole we are less than a half mile from the B-24 plane wreckage that had occurred back in 1942.
We ran into a forest service crew that had spent last week clearing the West Tr. #96 and were now clearing the East Tr. #95. They had 1 more day to work and all the trails would be clear of all down trees.
This was one of the best hikes we have done in Arizona and this is the perfect time of year to do it. : app : : app : : app :

This was our 2nd day in the Canyon and the plan was for everyone to have 6:30 breakfast at the cantina and hike to Ribbon Falls. We all hit the trail at 7:00 with seven hikers in tow and planned to take our time and take lots of pictures.

The Box as it is called for the first 3.5 miles is incredible! You are in the shade and it is a very cool and crisp walk at this time of the year. There is no way that I would want to be in here in the summer months because it gets extremely hot and retains the heat until late into the evening due to the sun shining on the surrounding black Vishnu Schist rock.

The whole group made it to the signed junction with a spur trail to the left. If the water flow is low, as in early summer--and you have Tevas or other water shoes--you can follow this spur and cross the creek to access Ribbon Falls via a shortcut. However, this time the water was running pretty fast, our best bet was to continue on over the hill and cross via the bridge over Bright Angel Creek.
At this point only 5 of us wanted to continue on to the falls, 2 had enough and decided to return to Phantom Ranch and call it a day. :scared:
The Upper Ribbon falls originate at Roaring springs and make its way down to the canyon bottom nearly 4000 ft below. Ribbon falls actually is a stream of water thereby causing moss to grow all over the rock face giving it the ribbon like appearance. Up close its obvious that the moss mat is nearly a few inches thick and covers the entrance to a small cavern at the base of the falls. I was informed that if you are slim and adventurous you could crawl into the cavern, needless to say none of us wanted to try that at this time of year.
We stayed and enjoyed our sack lunches behind the falls and took lots of pictures. It is a must do hike if you are staying at Phantom Ranch for a few days.

Arrived at the Grand Canyon on Sunday afternoon just in time to get to the mule barn to pack our duffel with the extras for the 2 days at Phantom Ranch. The weather was overcast and very windy. There were wind gusts up to 50 mph.
We stayed at Yavapai Lodge on Sunday night and planned a 5:30 start on Monday morning so that we could watch the sunrise at Ooo-ahh Point. There was a lot of cloud cover in the morning and the winds were still blowing with strong gusts. There were 7 hikers in our group, 2 veterans and 5 newcomers to the canyon. I had hiked this trail in 2008 and it was incredible. This time was every bit as beautiful as the last. I could hike this same trail every year and be in awe.
From Ooo-ahh Point the trail turns around a few switchbacks in a natural break in the Coconino Sandstone until Cedar Ridge, where the trail begins to level off slightly. Cedar Ridge had toilet facilities but no water at this time of year. Below here, the trail continues north around the east site of O'Neill Butte, descending gradually through the Hermit Shale and Supai Group to Skeleton Point, three miles from the trailhead. After Skeleton Point, the trail begins a sharp descent through a natural break in the Redwall Limestone. The trail cuts to the west of the point where we got our first view of Phantom Ranch, then quickly back to the east side of the point. There are numerous switchbacks to descend the 1,200 feet through the Redwall Limestone, Muav Limestone, and Bright Angel Shale to the junction with the Tonto Trail, 4 1/2 miles from the trailhead.
We arrived at the Tipoff at about 9:30 am and made our final steep descent to the bottom of the canyon, through the Tapeats Sandstone. This section is the steepest of the South Kaibab Trail at an average of 22%. Six miles from the trailhead, there is a junction with the River Trail at its eastern terminus. One-half mile past the junction, there is a tunnel that lead us across the Black Suspension Bridge crossing the Colorado River.
We arrived at Phantom Ranch about 1 mile from the Black bridge at 11: 15 and were all ready for a hot shower and that ice cold Tecate beer at the cantina. Great Day !!!! :y: :y: :y:

This is the last hike before the Canyon on Sunday. My son and I were trying to get in a quick workout hike to get ready for the South Kaibab Tr. and 30 miles in the Canyon for 3 days. :y:

Got a late start for me... 8:30am but what the h--, I had some other people that were late sleepers with me. I did this back in January and figured it would work for me. I wanted to get a few conditioning hikes before I leave for the Grand Canyon Hike in 9 days. I planned on trying to punish myself a little and keep a pretty good pace and not stop and take any pictures. Made it to the top in 2 hrs and 5min and was very happy with the time for me. Then decided to have a quick snack and get back down as quickly as I could without killing myself. The last time I was here there were hordes of people and it was grand central in both directions. Amazingly there was no one on the flatiron where I got there at 10:35 in the morning...how was that possible???. :y:
I was making good time on the way down until just before the bowl and after that it looked like school had just let out. It took me 2hrs and 30 min to get down because of the amount of people going up.....I was amazed at the amount of small kids 5 to 10 year olds, in groups of 15 to 20 with adults.
Good for them I guess, the future generations of hikers.

I started this trip on a mission... to find the famous "Master Map". I tried this trip last week from the Peralta TH and searched for about an hour to find the map but to no avail, leaving frustrated and a little disappointed. This week I started from First Water TH in search of the map. This is the second most direct route to Charlebois Spring adding about 1.5 miles more each way. Last week I made a long loop, but had no intentions of adding anything to the trip as it was already going to be close to 17 miles round trip.

I made good time to Charlebois Spring, covering the 8.5 miles in about 3.5 hours, which is good by my standards. The hardest part of the trip was Bull Pass and it's not that strenuous. I know that Joe B said and I quote "I did a little jog up to the pass"; it was not quite that easy then again he has young legs.

I spent about 2 hours looking again.... exhausted I had to give up again; it felt like I was searching for the Dutchman and the lost mines. I headed home wondering if I would ever find it.
I now have better information on the location and will try again in about 2 weeks. I will keep everyone posted on my success. This has definitely been a challenge :scared: :scared:

This is a lasso loop from Peralta TH via Bluff Springs trail to LaBarge Creek to Charlebois Spring up to Terrapin Trail and needle canyon back to Bluff Springs trail. I could have posted this trip under Bluff Spring Mountain Loop but decided to use Charlebois from Peralta TH because I went up to the spring. I was actually in search of the "Master Map". I remember that back in the 80's I had spent 2 nights backpacking in this area and we had found it. This time I was alone and spent about 1 hour looking but came up empty. A little disappointed and frustrated I decided to end the search and have some lunch. After a 45 min rest I figured that I had better start heading back because I did not want to spend the night with just a day pack.
:bdh:

From Red Tanks Tr and Bluff Spring Tr along LaBarge Creek the trail is washed out and does not exist the creek is running pretty good and if you do not want to get wet you will have to bolder hop back and forth along the creek. There is a lot of debris and large logs blocking many parts and it is a challenge staying dry. I had planned on making this a total loop going over Weaver Cross Cut and back down Peralta Tr. I spent to much time and energy with the creek and looking for the Master Map that I cut it short and did the lasso loop. All in all it was a gorgeous day and with the winds we had the day before the air was clean and clear. The scenery was incredible with lots of water and greenery.

: app : I started this hike planning to go to Charlebois Spring. The Dutchman Trail to the Bull Pass junction was wet and muddy for most of the way. There is running water everywhere. Bull Pass Trail was even in worse shape. There is a lot of erosion and plenty of run off, combined with a slightly overgrown wet trail I decided to make the loop around Black Top Mesa after I reached the other side of Bull Pass. I guess I will save that trip for another time. This whole area will be full of color in a few weeks as every thing is preparing to bloom. I will plan on doing this again in a few weeks. : app :
